Jimmy Buffett, a much-loved musician who made memorable appearances in movies (as well as providing iconic music to their soundtracks) has died at the age of 76.

“Parrot Heads”, as his fans are known (coined after he saw big groups of them at his concerts dressed in tropical clothing and wearing toy parrots on their heads) are in mourning.

    Early life

Born on December 25, 1946, in Pascagoula, Mississippi, James William Buffett became best known for his unique musical blend of country, rock, and Caribbean influences. His songs were less a genre; more a way of life — a reminder to savor every moment, appreciate the simple pleasures, and embrace the spirit of adventure.

    Musical career

His musical journey began in the late 1960s, and over the decades, he produced wealth of hits that became anthems of escapism, including classics like ‘Margaritaville,’ ‘Cheeseburger in Paradise,’ and ‘Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes.’

It is perhaps ‘Margaritaville,’ released on Feb. 14th, 1977, for which he will be best remembered. The song — from the album also titled ‘Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes’ — spent 22 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and peaked at No. 8. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2016 for its cultural and historic significance.

“There was no such place as Margaritaville,” Buffett told the Arizona Republic in 2021. “It was a made-up place in my mind, basically made up about my experiences in Key West and having to leave Key West and go on the road to work and then come back and spend time by the beach.”

    Outside of his songs

Beyond his music, Buffett was a renaissance man. He was an accomplished author, with bestsellers such as ‘Tales from Margaritaville’ and ‘A Pirate Looks at Fifty,’ based on his life experiences.

His love for sailing led to the creation of the ‘Margaritaville’ brand, which expanded into restaurants, hotels, and a diverse range of lifestyle products.

Buffet’s philanthropic endeavors were almost as notable as his musical efforts –– he became passionate about environmental issues, including the preservation of coastlines. He also helped small businesses threatened by closure, including a shrimp fishing company in North Carolina he chose as the primary supplier for his restaurants.

    Buffett in movies

‘Margaritaville’ and other songs from his back catalogue have graced the soundtracks of countless movies. And Buffett himself is no stranger to the screen, cropping up in cameos as himself or as characters including ‘Hook’, ‘Cobb’, ‘Congo’, ‘Repo Man’, ‘Hoot’, and the ‘Billionaire Boys Club’.

He’s memorably spotted in ‘Jurassic World’, rescuing margaritas (of course) from a Margaritaville restaurant based in theme park when Pteranodons attack the patrons.

‘World’ director Colin Trevorrow paid fitting tribute to the moment on twitter:

He’s a big part of Frank Marshall and Ryan Suffern’s 2022 documentary ‘Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Story’ (and was an executive producer), about which you can read more below:

Buffett’s family released an official statement on his passing:

“Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs. He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.”

Box Office: ‘Dumbo’ Has Lowest Opening For a Disney Live-Action Remake

    Disney

Tim Burton‘s live-action remake of “Dumbo” topped the box office with $45 million from 4259 screens, making it the lowest opening of any live-action Disney movie so far.

How much lower is that than recent Disney remakes? “Beauty and the Beast” debuted with $174 million in 2017, “The Jungle Book” opened with $103 million, in 2016 and “Cinderella” rang up $67 million in its first weekend in 2015.

Poor reviews might have helped ground the big-eared elephant: It has a 50% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences, however, gave it an “A-” Cinemascore.

The film, which stars Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Eva Green, had a budget of $170 million, which might be made up with overseas ticket sales.  The movie took in $71 million from foreign markets for a global start of $116 million.

“Dumbo’”s $45 million opening is, however, better than Burton’s last film: “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” (also starring Eva Green), opened with $28.8 million in 2016 from 3522 screens.

    Universal

Last weekend’s champ, “Us,” took in $33 million in its second weekend. It’s now passed $128 million in ticket sales in North America. That makes it the 7th-ranked R-rated horror film, just behind “The Conjuring” which finished its box-office run with $137 million.

    Disney/Marvel

Captain Marvel” landed in third place for its third weekend, with an additional $20 million. It’s now surpassed $350 million in domestic ticket sales and $990 million worldwide. The billion-dollar club beckons.

    Neon

Everything was not alright, alright, alright for Matthew McConaughey, who suffered the lowest opening of his career with “The Beach Bum.” The R-rated stoner comedy from “Spring Breakers” director Harmony Korine earned only $1.8 million from 1,100 screens. That was still enough for it to crack the Top 10.

The film, which premiered at South by Southwest, was initially going to have a platform release, but instead opened nationwide with very little marketing.

Anti-abortion drama “Unplanned” pulled in $6.1 million from 1,060 venues. It’s currently battling “Five Feet Apart,” which earned an estimated $6.25 million, for fourth place.

Here are the top 10 estimates for March 22-24, 2019
    1. “Dumbo,” (2019) $45,000,000
    2. “Us,” $33,605,000
    3. “Captain Marvel,” $20,500,000
    4. “Five Feet Apart,” $6,250,000
    5. “Unplanned,” $6,110,000
    6. “Wonder Park,” $4,940,000
    7. “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” $4,232,000
    8. “Hotel Mumbai,” $3,163,660
    9. “Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral,” $2,700,000
    10. “The Beach Bum,” $1,800,000

Matthew McConaughey is definitely feeling alright, alright, alright in the new trailer for “The Beach Bum.”

His stoner poet character Moondog is living the dream — shambling around Miami, high as a kite,  playing bongoes, indulging in women and booze, hanging out with Snoop Dogg and Jimmy freakin’ Buffett, and spouting off philosophy.

The movie comes from writer/director Harmony Korine, his first project since 2012’s “Spring Breakers.” And like that movie, this one boasts sun-bleached, hazy visuals and a lot of neon-lit nights. McConaughey totally looks in his element as a “rebellious rogue.”

“The Beach Bum” also stars Isla Fisher, Jonah Hill, Zac Efron, and Martin Lawrence and debuts at the 2019 Film Festival. It opens in theaters March 22.

‘Beach Bum’ Trailer Takes Matthew McConaughey on One Hell of a Trip

    Beach Bum
    NEON

This trip is alright, alright, alright!

Neon unveiled the red-band trailer for Harmony Korine’s new movie, “The Beach Bum,” which stars Matthew McConaughey as the titular character.

Otherwise known as Moondog, this bum spends his days blissed out on acid, hanging out with Snoop Dogg, joy-riding in cars that aren’t his own, and playing bongos half-naked. Oh, and he writes poetry.

It’s the life, man, and he’s sucking the nectar out of it.

The trailer has the same beachy, grimy, bleached-out look that Korine’s 2012 film “Spring Breakers,” though the vibes seem very different. And McConaughey confessed that Snoop switched in real pot for the fake stuff while shooting, so this is a true stoner flick.

“Beach Bum” opens March 22, 2019.
