‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Leads Visual Effects Society Awards Nominations

    Marvel Studios

Marvel is gunning hard for “Black Panther” to be considered for several major awards at next month’s Oscars ceremony, while its other huge 2018 release, “Avengers: Infinity War” will only be submitted in the visual effects category. But the just-announced nominations from the Visual Effects Society Awards prove that “Infinity War” is already the early favorite to claim the Academy’s statuette.

The VES Awards nominees, announced on Tuesday, were led by “Infinity War,” which nabbed six nods from the group. It will compete against “Ready Player One,” “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” “Christopher Robin,” and “Welcome to Marwen” for the top prize, outstanding visual effects in a photo-real feature.

In a surprise move, the VES awards snubbed two other releases that seem poised for Oscar nods: “Black Panther” and “Mary Poppins Returns.” Neither of those flicks earned a single nomination Tuesday, though both are expected to compete in the more high-profile Oscar categories (including Best Picture and Best Actress, respectively).

The top animated feature contender was “Incredibles 2,” while “Lost in Space” earned the most nominations for a TV series. Winners will be announced at a ceremony on February 5, hosted by Patton Oswalt.

  • Carrie Coon Revealed as ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Villain Proxima Midnight

The cast of “Avengers: Infinity War” just got even bigger: The film’s co-directors have revealed that there’s going to be at least one more villain assisting Josh Brolin‘s Thanos in the flick, and she’s played by an Emmy-nominated actress.

While speaking with the UK’s Radio Times, co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo spoke about the actors playing Thanos’s hechmen, known collectively as the Black Order. In addition to confirming the casting of Tom Vaughn-Lawlor (as Ebony Maw) and Terry Notary (as Cull Obsidian), the Russos also dropped a new bit of intel: “Fargo” and “The Leftovers” star Carrie Coon will play the only female member of the Black Order, known as Proxima Midnight.

Coon herself shared the exciting news on Twitter, revealing, “My voice and a dazzle of gifted animators have teamed up to play Proxima Midnight.” The star went on to explain that she also completed some motion-capture work — using mostly her face — to bring the villainess to life.

According to Radio Times, a mo-cap performance seems like it was definitely necessary to accurately portray Proxima Midnight, who in the comics “is armed with a spear that possesses the power of a time-distorted sun and is coated in an incredibly deadly toxin.” Another interesting tidbit from her original Marvel Comics storyline: she’s married to another Black Order henchman, Corvus Glaive. That character’s casting has yet to be announced, and there’s already been lots of speculation about just who could be playing him (Radio Times thinks it may be Peter Dinklage, who’s known to be in “Infinity War,” but whose character has yet to be revealed).

Coon joins an already insanely-stacked ensemble, led by Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Pratt, Chadwick Boseman, and just about every other MCU character you can think of. While Coon’s role might seems small by comparison, we already know that her leader, Thanos, is getting the majority of the screen time. That may mean we wind up seeing quite a bit of the actress, too.

Fans will find out very soon: “Avengers: Infinity War” opens on April 27.

  • These Characters Have the Most Screen Time in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

WARNING: This post contains some possible minor SPOILERS for “Avengers: Infinity War.” If you don’t want to know anything about the film — including which characters have the most screen time — stop reading now.

It’s not easy taking dozens of characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and inserting them all into the same feature film — and according to “Avengers: Infinity War” co-director Joe Russo, that challenge means that some heroes are represented more than others in the flick. But fans should be pleasantly surprised by who is featured the most, Russo said, as well as how they drive the story moving forward.

In an interview with Fandango, the director acknowledged that it was difficult to cram every single hero into the flick, noting that many of them would not receive equal screen time simply because it was not possible to do so in one movie. Russo did say, however, that those who were seemingly left out of “Avengers 3” will definitely play a bigger role in “Avengers 4.”

As for who’s running the show in “Infinity War,” though, it should come as no surprise to fans that Russo said Thanos (Josh Brolin) was far and away the central character of the film, since the villain’s presence is what brings together all of the MCU’s various scattered heroes in the first place. Thanos is “at turns horrifying and at turns empathetic,” Russo said, with Fandango likening him to Michael B. Jordan’s sympathetic “Black Panther” baddie, Killmonger.

The director also hinted that a certain God of Thunder (Chris Hemsworth) makes a big splash in “Infinity War.” Here’s what he said when asked about who has the most screen time:

Thanos has an incredible amount of screen time in this film, in a lot of ways I would say it’s his movie. … We wanted to tell a story that [audiences] weren’t expecting, and the story is told from the point of view of a villain, which I think is also really unique and risky for a commercial film that will surprise the audience. … [A]nd I think you’ll find that Thor has a really interesting arc in the film. He hasn’t been at the forefront of other Avengers movies but he certainly has a very important role in this film. … I think you’ll see that Thor is at times hilarious and at times tragic in the film.

Interestingly, Russo also added a third character to the mix when talking about the “Infinity War” characters’ perspectives, including none other than Zoe Saldana‘s “Guardians of the Galaxy” heroine.

“[The movie’s] point of view is Thanos’ point of view, so it’s a villain driving the narrative. But … that being said, it is at times multi-perspective and there are very important roles for a couple of the heroes,” the director explained to Fandango. “I think you could argue, too, that a lot of the film is told from the point of view of Gamora, and I think she has a really fascinating arc in the movie.”

We’re already intrigued. Eager fans — who have broken ticket sales and trailer viewing recordswon’t have to wait much longer to see how everything plays out: “Avengers: Infinity War” hits theaters worldwide on April 27.

  • ‘Shredded’ Josh Brolin Inspired Dave Bautista to Get Jacked for ‘Avengers 4’

Disney's D23 EXPO 2017Josh Brolin‘s insane physical transformation for his role as Cable in “Deadpool 2” grabbed lots of attention when the actor — who pulls double Marvel duty as Thanos in the traditional MCU flicks — debuted his new bod on social media this summer. Fellow MCU star Dave Bautista, who plays Drax in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” series, was among those impressed by Brolin’s physique — so much so, in fact, that he’s pledged to get himself in even better shape by the time the two start working together on the fourth “Avengers” flick this fall.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bautista admitted that he didn’t even recognize his pal when Brolin approached him at the gym a couple months ago (Brolin alluded to this encounter in his original Instagram post depicting his Cable workout), so significant was the latter actor’s metamorphosis.

“He is not only jacked, but he is shredded,” Bautista told THR of Brolin. “His face is all sunken in like a model. He is like a completely different person.”

Bautista knows a thing or two about getting jacked, thanks to his past as a semi-professional wrestler, but the buff actor said he was pretty intimidated by Brolin’s appearance — and it’s given him some serious workout motivation.

“I am known for being in shape and being a big guy, and he actually made me self-conscious!” Bautista told the trade. “I swear to God, I promised him that in November, when I do some work on ‘[Avengers] 4,’ I told him, ‘I will be in better shape for that because you make me self-conscious, f*cker!’”

Look for an even-more-jacked Bautista alongside Brolin when “Avengers 4” — a.k.a. “Infinity War Part II” — hits theaters in May 2019.

  • ‘Infinity War’ Director Talks ‘Surprise’ Duo, ‘Unprecedented’ MCU Task

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Comic Con PosterThe roof of Comic-Con International’s Hall H nearly exploded from the unbridled excitement generated by a second unveiling the still-not-public sneak peek footage from “Avengers: Infinity War” that took D23 by storm.

    So, no pressure, Joe Russo.

Immediately after the presentation, Russo — who, with his brother Anthony, are the filmmakers at the helm of the forthcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe mega-crossover that unites the superhero community in a battle against Thanos’s bid to conquer the cosmos — told Moviefone he was feeling energized by the wildly positive response to the footage, especially given that he and Anthony are just about to start work on the follow-up installment.

And he offered a hint at who he suspects will be the breakout superhero comedy duo of “Infinity War.”

Moviefone: The response that you’ve gotten here and at D23, what has it meant to you to see the enthusiasm the “Infinity War” footage has provoked?

Joe Russo: It’s incredible, because oddly, it happened to have fallen, both D23 and Comic-Con, in between the two movies that we’re working on. It’s hard making these films, physically hard. It’s emotionally demanding, it’s psychologically demanding. To see that reaction, right before we’re about to start the second movie, is a great burst of energy to carry us to the next film.

You’ve gotten the opportunity to work with just about everybody in the MCU so far. What was the thrill of experiencing the new people that you got to work with? Did anybody stand out as, like, that was way better than I expected?

Everybody brings incredible energy. Marvel does an incredible job of casting. I joke that the cast is like “The Poseidon Adventure” meets “Towering Inferno.” It’s that big. Everyone who comes in is a movie star. Movie stars are day-playing on this film. They’ll come in and do one day’s worth of work.

So you’re just constantly surprised every day by the quality of talent you have in front of you. I’ll just pick up the call sheet and laugh, because I go, “Oh my God, this person’s coming in for one or two days, and they’re one of my favorite actors.”

These huge Marvel movies are challenging to make in any circumstance, but this is that big culmination movie, the epic that everything’s been building toward. What were the specific challenges of that for you?

It’s trying to pull all the different threads together, all the characters so that you have continuity in narrative, that there’s a flow, that you are paying off everything that’s been set up. So, it’s been a hell of a task.

Thankfully, we have incredible partners in [screenwriters Christopher] Markus and [Stephen] McFeely, who wrote “Winter Soldier” and “Civil War,” and are writing both “Avengers” scripts for us. We have great partners in Marvel. We’ve worked with the same crew now on four movies, so it’s like a family. So we have an incredible amount of support.

The hardest part is tying all the different threads together. It’s kind of unprecedented. I can’t think of a movie that has this many stories that are leading into it. It literally took us a year in a room in front of a computer screen trying to figure it out.

Are there any two characters you can tease that were especially fun to see together for the first time?

Oh boy! I like the dynamic between Thor and Star-Lord. I think it’s going to surprise people. It’s very funny. People saw it today, what Taika [Waititi] did with the tone on “Ragnarok,” bringing that tone and energy from the “Thor” world into the “Guardians” universe, and you get a really combustable chemistry and some pretty funny stuff.Star-Lord and Thor

  • Meet the Four New Villains of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

Disney's D23 EXPO 2017When he’s not throwing planets around, Thanos (Josh Brolin) is busy rallying minions to fight for him. “Guardians of the Galaxy” already revealed two of his adopted daughters — Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Nebula (Karen Gillan), who are now against Thanos — but more “children” will be fighting alongside Daddy in “Avengers: Infinity War.”

While at Disney’s D23 Expo, Josh Brolin helped introduce “the children of Thanos”:

Entertainment Weekly shared a breakdown about each member of the Black Order:

    • Corvus Glaive – This enforcer, whose job was to shakedown planets for gifts that would enrich Thanos, was immortal as long as his mystical blade remained unbroken.
    • Proxima Midnight – Corvus was married to Proxima, a warrior who used her spear – which was forged from a sun trapped in an alternate reality – to launch a shattering attack on Black Panther’s nation of Wakanda.
    • Ebony Maw – Not the most powerful of the Black Order, but a brilliant and manipulative thinker who wields power of persuasion over most beings. He famously tangled with Doctor Strange in the comics.
    • Black Dwarf – Don’t let the name fool you. This brawler is physically hulking and has superhuman strength and nearly impenetrable muscle mass.”

Read a more detailed breakdown of each character at ComicBook.com.

The casting for each character has yet to be revealed, but they are expected to be at least partly performed by motion capture.

“Avengers: Infinity War” just finished filming on Friday and it will be released May 4, 2018. The first footage shown at D23 stunned the audience, and fans are anxious to see any kind of trailer for themselves. The crew will soon return to Atlanta to start filming “Avengers 4.”

  • First ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Footage at D23 Will Melt Your Brain

Marvel wasn’t joking when they said “Avengers: Infinity War” changes everything.

A packed house at D23 Saturday watched most of the Avengers actors (and a few Guardians of the Galaxy cast members) take the stage with Marvel’s Kevin Feige “Infinity War” and co-director Joe Russo to unveil our first look at next summer’s blockbuster. The footage was epic, brutal, intense, violent AF, and, awesome.

    Here’s what we saw:

The clip opened with the Guardians aboard the Milano, flying through a bright part of the galaxy that is home to what looks like wrecked planets. Mantis says “We are arriving.” Star-Lord, at the controls, peers out of the windshield and quips: “Don’t forget: this might be dangerous, so let’s put on our mean faces.”

Then a body slams into the cockpit’s windows. Rocket screams “Wipers! Wipers!” and we see who the person is: Thor. His face smooshed against the glass in a solid callback to a scene in the first “Thor” film. We then find his unconscious body inside the Milano and Mantis awakens him using her abilities. Thor snaps awake, startles the Guardians — who then draw their guns on the God of Thunder as he sizes them up and says: “Who the hell are you guys?” They continue to glide through space, as Rocket and Thor gaze out a porthole at this weird area of space before Thor remarks that “something is very wrong.”
Cut to: Scarlet Witch narrowly averting a golden energy blast as it bisects a truck behind her. After a scary CG light show, Loki stands among unknown ruins (maybe on Earth?) and presents his precious Tesseract cube from the first “Avengers” film.

Our favorite shot comes next, when we find Peter Parker riding on a school bus and his “Spidey sense” manifests as the hairs on his arms sticking straight up. Iron Man suits up among the Guardians as Tony says: “We have one advantage… he’s coming to us.”

“He” is Thanos, who arrives in a steel spacecraft that looks like vertical boomarang. It stabs down through a yellow sky over a ruined planet, as giant metal rigs seem to protrude from the planet’s surface. Cue the ominous music and Thanos’ booming voiceover.

“Fun isn’t something one considers when balancing the universe, but this does put a smile on my face.” That smile is caused by massive planetary destruction. Then the quick montage of “That was so awesome!” footage kicks in: Gamora stands in the ruins of the Collector’s collection, looking up in fear — sad eyes fixed on something off-screen that can’t be good. Bucky and Black Panther lead troops into a massive battle cry somewhere. Doctor Strange casts magic discs that Star-Lord uses as stepping stones to fight Thanos on the day-lit ruins of this yellow-skied world, which looks a lot like Earth in its death rattle.
Debris and twisted metal floats everywhere on this world, as does Star-Lord, as it seems like the Infinity Stones are messing with the laws of physics. We see Black Widow rocking some silver-y blond hair, Steve Rogers sporting a “it’s-a-long-story” beard (!), Peter flipping and dodging weapons fire before landing on a vertical, spinning gear to some machine. Oh, and he is wearing his new metal Spidey suit from the end of “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”

The final moments that really brought on the nerd shakes were: An unmasked Spider-Man, on the ground, wet eyes locked on Tony as the fallen hero says “I’m sorry.” Thanos vice-grips Thor’s head, and squeezes it. Thanos punches Iron Man in the face, launching him out of frame. Soon, a maskless and bloody Iron Man looks on as Thanos uses his badass Power Glove (aka the Infinity Gauntlet) to summon what looks like the moon out of the sky. Why? So he can use it to pummel the Avengers with as the planetoid crashes into the atmosphere.

Aaaaaand mic drop. The first half of “Infinity War” hits theaters May 2018.

  • Who the Heck Is Peter Dinklage Playing in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’?!

“Game of Thrones” star Peter Dinklage has been cast in an unspecified role.

Marvel Studios may not be saying much, but we have a few ideas as to what characters Dinklage could be playing as the Avengers head into space to battle Thanos. Scroll down to check out our theories.

    1. M.O.D.O.K.
M.O.D.O.K.’s name stands for “Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing,” and you can get a pretty good idea of his personality from that. Basically a gigantic head with a penchant for murdering minions with his forehead laser, M.O.D.O.K. is one of the primary leaders of the science terrorists known as AIM.

We saw a version of AIM. in “Iron Man 3” led by Guy Pearce‘s Aldrich Killian, but we want to see the group’s true lord and master enter the fray.

    2. Eternity
As “Infinity War” delves deeper into Marvel’s cosmic elements, it only makes sense that moviegoers will start to be exposed to some of the more powerful entities that pull the string of the Marvel Universe.

We could see Dinklage and his soothing voice easily filling the role of Eternity, the ageless being who exists everywhere at once and can reshape reality at a whim, especially with Benedict Cumberbatch‘s mystical hero Doctor Strange playing such a big role in this sequel.

    3. Starfox
With Thanos stepping into the spotlight, we’re hoping we’ll get to meet the rest of the Mad Titan’s family in “Infinity War.” Dinklage would be a perfect fit to play Thanos’ estranged brother and occasional Avenger, Starfox.

Starfox spends most of his time drinking and womanizing when he isn’t saving the universe, and we can think of a certain other Dinklage character who matches that description.

    4. Pip the Troll
Pip the Troll is perhaps the most obvious choice for Dinklage, given the actor’s short stature. Perhaps too obvious, but the fact that Pip is so closely tied to Thanos does make it a likely possibility. The mischievous Pip is a frequent sidekick to Adam Warlock, one of Thanos’ greatest enemies and another character we assume will play a central role in “Infinity War.”

    5. Arno Stark
Given Dinklage’s knack for playing sarcastic, charismatic characters, he reminds us more than a little of Robert Downey Jr.‘s Tony Stark. Why, they could almost be brothers. So why not take the opportunity to cast Dinklage as Arno Stark?

Originally an evil Iron Man from the future, Arno was recently re-imagined in the comics as Tony’s long-lost brother. We’d love to see the two Starks join forces on the big screen.

    6. The Watcher
The Watcher is an immortal being cursed to observe all events in the universe but never interfere. A rule which he sometimes breaks when the situation is dire enough (for instance, when Thanos is trying to assemble the Infinity Gauntlet).

There’s been speculation that Stan Lee has actually been playing The Watcher in his various cameo appearances, but we think Dinklage would be perfect to play another character whose main skill is “knowing things.”

We’ll find out when “Infinity War” hits theaters Summer 2018.
