It’s fair to say that the Marvel movies, specifically the Marvel Cinematic Universe releases, have reached “cultural event” status.  And there’s a strong case to be made that the MCU is a currently a pop culture juggernaut, the likes of which we haven’t since the original ‘Star Wars‘ trilogy hit theaters for the first time.

Now the MCU saga is continuing on TV, starting with ‘WandaVision‘ and continuing  with ‘Loki,’ ‘The Falcon and the Winter Solider,’ ‘Ms. Marvel,’ ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,’ ‘Hawkeye,’ ‘Moon Knight,’ ‘Secret Invasion‘, ‘Echo‘, ‘Agatha All Along‘, and ‘Daredevil: Born Again‘.

Not to mention the new “Special Presentation” movies that Marvel has debuted on Disney+ including ‘Werewolf by Night‘ and ‘The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.’

It is a great time to watch the Marvel movies in order now and you can watch them all on Disney Plus in 4K format. You can even plan virtual Marvel movie nights with your friends using Disney+ GroupWatch feature.

  • ‘Empire’ Stars Call for Jussie Smollett’s Return in Season 6

‘Empire’ Stars Call for Jussie Smollett’s Return in Season 6

Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson in Empire
    FOX

The year has been a rocky one so far for Jussie Smollett, but he has the support of his TV family behind him. Several of the “Empire” star’s cast mates have written a letter to Fox and Disney executives, urging them to bring him back for Season 6, Deadline reports.

Smollett has been in the news since January when he was hospitalized after allegedly being attacked in Chicago by two men. Police initially investigated the incident as a possible hate crime, but they later accused Smollett of orchestrating the attack and filing a false police report. Charges against the actor were ultimately dropped, but the controversy has continued.

In the midst of the investigation, Fox opted to remove Smollett’s character, Jamal, from the final two episodes of Season 5. Now, his Season 6 fate remains unclear. What is clear, however, is that many of the show’s stars want Smollett back. The letter of support was signed by Terrence Howard (Lucious), Taraji P. Henson (Cookie), Bryshere Y. Gray (Hakeem), Trai Byers (Andre), Gabourey Sidibe (Becky), and Nicole Ari Parker (Nicole).

“Together, as a united front, we stand with Jussie Smollett and ask that our co-star, brother and friend be brought back for our sixth season of Empire,” they wrote in part.

The letter went on to endorse Smollet’s character, calling him “kind,” “compassionate,” “honest,” and “filled with integrity.” They highlighted their belief in his innocence and the fact that the case was dismissed.

Fox and Disney TV Studios have yet to comment on the letter. We’ll have to wait to see what they decide to do regarding Smollett.

    Read the full letter below.

Dear Charlie, Dana, Michael, Lee, Danny, Francie, Brian, Sanaa, Dennis, and Brett,

Together, as a united front, we stand with Jussie Smollett and ask that our co-star, brother and friend be brought back for our sixth season of Empire.

We understand the past months have been difficult to process—sometimes the headlines brought more confusion than clarity, yet we now have a conclusion to this ordeal. Throughout Empire’s five seasons working with Jussie and watching how he has conducted himself throughout this traumatic event, we have come to know not just the character Jussie portrays, but also truly come to know Jussie’s personal character. He is kind. He is compassionate. He is honest and above all he is filled with integrity. He is also innocent and no longer subject to legal uncertainty with the criminal charges against him having been dropped. We are confident in his lawyer’s assurance that the case was dismissed because it would not have prevailed.

Jussie has shown us on and off the set who he really is as a leader. In addition to being a caring friend and cast member who treats every crew member with love and respect, he has spent time with our families and individually supported each of us. These recent and detailed letters from The Black AIDS Institute, the Rainbow Push Coalition and the City Lights Orchestra shine a light on his commitment to true community service. Just a few months ago, Jussie partnered with the Trevor Project to provide support to their volunteer program that allows LGBTQ youth in crisis access to vital counseling services. Prior to that, he gave every cent from his sold out world tour to numerous charities. He has adopted a school in Chicago, taught songwriting to incarcerated youth at the Cook County Jail last year and bought the family of Kayden Kinckle, a six-year-old, double amputee, a wheelchair accessible van due to his school district not having a wheelchair accessible school bus. He has traveled to South Africa for service as well as to Jamaica to quietly meet about the safety of LGBTQ youth. This was all done without posturing, the need for attention or even discussion.

This is the Jussie we know.

It’s clearer every day that the extreme political climate in our country has only made our system of justice and the court of public opinion more unjust.

It is why now, more than ever, we must stand together as a family. A family is there for us in good times and bad. It can cut through the noise and confusion to understand that there is a person in the center of all this who deserves nothing more than to move forward with his life. We understand that this show is a business. And that business matters to us as well. We are confident our fans will welcome our “Jamal” back into the Empire family as enthusiastically as we will.

That is why we write today to ask you to keep Jussie on the cast so that we can all put this behind us and move forward. Thank you for taking time to hear us. It’s our hope that together we will move into our sixth season as the entire Empire family should.

    SINCERELY,

    Terrence Howard
    Taraji P Henson
    Bryshere Y. Gray
    Trai Byers
    Gabourey Sidibe

  • Oops! TV Academy Confuses Cuba Gooding Jr. & Terrence Howard at 2016 Emmys

    2012 People's Choice Awards - Show

Every year it happens at least once. At the 2016 Emmy Awards, it happened to Terrence Howard and Cuba Gooding Jr.

, an official Emmys account with more than 170,000 followers, accidentally used a photo of “Empire” actor Terrence Howard with the caption “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series nominee @cubagoodinjr at the #Emmys red carpet!”

Several fans were quick to point out the mistake:

The tweet was eventually corrected with Howard’s name. As Huffington Post noted, this is similar to the Oprah/Whoopi confusion at the Oscars.

And you may recall how E! misidentified another red-haired actress as Sophie Turner at the Golden Globes.

    It happens!

  • Sean Penn Sues Lee Daniels for Defamation Over Domestic Violence Allegations

Life Ball 2015 - Press ConferenceSean Penn has filed a $10 million lawsuit against “Empire” creator Lee Daniels, alleging that Daniels defamed him in a recent interview.

Empire” star Terrence Howard‘s legal woes in connection with allegations that Howard abused his ex-wives. Daniels had told THR that he thought Howard was being unfairly scorned in the media in comparison to white actors who had allegedly done the same.

“[Terrence] ain’t done nothing different than Marlon Brando or Sean Penn, and all of a sudden he’s some f—in’ demon,” Daniels said in the interview. “That’s a sign of the time, of race, of where we are right now in America.”

For some context, Daniels was likely referring to Penn’s alleged abuse of his ex-wife Madonna, who he was married to from 1985 to 1989. Vanity Fair points to “the vivid story told in Christopher Andersen’s ‘Madonna: Unauthorized’ about Penn allegedly tying Madonna to a chair for hours and beating her” as the likely source of Daniels’s animosity toward the actor.

But Penn — who has never been arrested for or convicted of domestic violence — did not take kindly to Daniels’s comparison, and filed suit this week seeking $10 million in defamation damages from Daniels. The suit states:

As a result of Penn’s status as a public figure, he has for years been the subject of scandalous, scurrilous, and baseless attacks. But Penn, like any citizen, has a right to defend himself and will no longer tolerate the reckless and malicious behavior of others, who seek to aggrandize themselves or their projects at his expense. Accordingly, and because of Daniels’ defamatory statements, Penn brings this action for monetary relief, and to deter Daniels and others from their defamatory actions.

Daniels has yet to respond publicly to the suit.

  • First ‘Empire’ Season 2 Teaser Wants to #FreeLucious

    Empire
    #FreeLucious!

Fox has released the first, very brief teaser for season 2 of its massive hit drama “Empire,” and oh, how the tables have turned. Instead of flashbacks of Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard) visiting ex-wife Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) in prison, now it’s Cookie’s turn to see the jailed mogul.
There’s only 20 seconds worth of footage, but we get glimpses at all the major players: Jamal (Jussie Smollett) singing at a #FreeLucious concert; a smug Boo Boo Kitty (Grace Gealey) walking away from Hakeem (Bryshere Gray); Andre (Trai Byers) in a suit (what’s new?); Lucious in an orange jumpsuit; and of course, Cookie, in all her glory, in a cage holding a gold microphone. Oh, Cookie, never change!

Season 2 of “Empire” amps up the drama even more — yeah, it’s possible — with guest appearances by Marisa Tomei, Kelly Rowland (as Lucious’s mom in flashbacks), Chris Rock, Alicia Keys, and Lenny Kravitz.

Season 1 is not over, but it’s been off the air since May 28. But now it’s back with a vengeance, starting next Thursday, July 9.

  • ‘Empire’ Season 2 Gets Premiere Date, Upped Episode Count

Ask and you shall receive. An “Empire” fan wrote to actress Taraji P. Henson, asking when Season 2 would premiere, and she just helpfully tweeted this note:

Bring it, Cookie! It can be tough for freshmen series to find their footing, but “Empire” was an instant hit for FOX. The Season 1 finale ended with about 16.7 million viewers and a massive 6.5 rating/20 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic. As TheWrap noted, “Empire” will expand from 12 episodes to 18 for the 2015-2016 season, with the episodes split into two cycles. It’ll retain its Wednesdays at 9 p.m. timeslot.

Here are two more Season 2 teases from Empire Writers:

It’s safe to say fans are ready for round two. If you need to catch up before September 23, check out the 10 most scandalous moments from Season 1.

  • Best of Late Night TV: Ryan Reynolds Plays ‘Egg Russian Roulette,’ Cate Blanchett Finally Explains ‘#SuckIt’ (VIDEO)

If you’re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s the best of what happened last night on late night.

Jimmy Fallon had himself a busy Monday night on “The Tonight Show,” playing games with Ryan Reynolds and Kelly Clarkson and talking to Terrence Howard about the “Empire” star’s (hilarious, in hindsight) Oscars flub.

Jimmy referenced how Kelly said it’s been hard for her to find people to do duets with, so Jimmy sang a medley of duets with her. Moving on to Ryan, Jimmy played “Egg Russian Roulette” with Mr. Reynolds. They had to smash eggs on the tops of their heads without knowing which ones were raw. In his sit-down interview, Ryan did a pretty great Aaron Neville impression and said he thinks his baby girl might be allergic to sleep, or perhaps keeping him and Blake awake to protect them from the sleep monsters.
The perfection that is Cate Blanchett was on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and she teased Jimmy about his tie and “The Bachelor.” Somehow they got on the topic of flying, and she was so excited because recently her ears popped when she was in the air, and it was the first time in 19 years that her ears popped. So she can finally hear things. Cate also explained why she told Julia Roberts to “#suckit” at last year’s Oscars. Apparently the previous year had been “pretty crappy” and whoever won was going to put the past year behind them. So she wasn’t dissing or even teasing Julia, she was dissing the past year. Or something. Listen to Cate explain it – everything makes more sense when she says it. Ryan Phillippe was on JKL, and he almost didn’t make it because he couldn’t fly out of Philly in an ice storm. He missed the “Secrets and Lies” cast event last night, but he curled up with his son and they watched it together. Ryan says he was a bit of a punk as a kid and he used to cut his own hair. Kelly Ripa was on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” and declared Jennifer Lopez to be the most exciting celebrity. “The Butler” director Lee Daniels was also on Seth’s show and talked about how he directs in his pajamas. Why not? Everything is more fun in PJs. Aziz Ansari was on “Conan” and shared that, after “Parks and Recreation” wrapped, his co-star Aubrey Plaza gave him something special to remember her … a note written on parchment and some blood and hair in a vial. He loves it. It’s such an Aubrey gift. But it turns out it’s not really her blood. Or her hair.
