  • ‘Star Trek: Picard’ Season 2 Trailer

Patrick Stewart in Paramount+'s 'Star Trek: Picard'
Patrick Stewart in Paramount+’s ‘Star Trek: Picard’

‘Star Trek: Picard’ might be about the future of Patrick Stewart’s iconic ‘Star Trek’ captain, but the new trailer for the series is very much about the past.

For this latest footage from the show brings us the first look at Whoopi Goldberg’s long-lived alien Guinan, along with John de Lancie’s troublesome Q, who has appeared in previous teasers.

This season of ‘Picard’ finds Jean-Luc plunged into an alternative timeline by Q, the omnipotent alien being who has been a thorn in his side since the very first episode of ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ way back in 1987.

Originally, Q showed up during the first mission of Picard’s USS Enterprise to put humanity on trial for what he saw as their crimes. The crew survived that encounter at Farpoint (or else there might not have been a show), yet Q kept showing up from time to time, usually causing trouble for Picard.

As for Guinan, Goldberg was a recurring part of the show from the second season as the mysterious, friendly barkeeper of the Ten Forward lounge on the Enterprise. Across the remaining seasons, we learn more about her powers, her incredibly long-lived species and the fact that she’s no friend of Q. It makes little surprise then that Picard would seek out his old friend for help.

That mirrors how Goldberg came to appear on the show – Patrick Stewart appeared on talk show ‘The View’ on which she is one of the co-hosts and invited her to return to the ‘Star Trek’ universe in an emotional moment.

With Q testing Picard yet again by meddling with reality and switching Earth and the Federation to a totalitarian regime, it’s up to our hero to round up some old friends and new to sort it out.

That’ll include a trip to 2024 Earth, encounters with various alien species and perhaps the biggest conundrum of all… driving cars. And the references to classic ‘Next Generation’ just keep coming – to facilitate traveling in time, Picard must utilize one of his other great rivals, the Borg Queen.

Though we didn’t meet the Queen until 1996’s ‘Star Trek: First Contact’, (there played by Alice Krige), her cybernetic species were introduced (coincidentally thanks to Q’s meddling) in the episode ‘Q Who.’ The characters hit their peak in the Season 3 finale/Season 4 opener ‘The Best Of Both Worlds’. Yet like Q, the Borg would go on to appear in several more episodes of both ‘The Next Generation’ and other ‘Star Trek’ series.

Here, the Queen is played by Annie Wersching, who might be best known for her roles on ‘24‘ and ‘Bosch.’ Given Picard’s history with the Borg (he was turned into one for a while), the reunion is sure to provoke some strong reactions.

The likes of Alison Pill, Jeri Ryan, Michelle Hurd, Evan Evagora, Orla Brady, Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera, and Stewart’s fellow ‘Next Generation’ veteran, Brent Spiner, all return for this new season, which already looks like a lot of fun.

‘Star Trek: Picard’ season two premieres Thursday, March 3, on Paramount+. New episodes of the 10-episode season will drop weekly.

  • ‘How I Met Your Father’ Exclusive Interviews

Hilary Duff promoting Hulu's 'How I Met Your Father'
Hilary Duff promoting Hulu’s ‘How I Met Your Father’

Premiering on Hulu January 18th is the new comedy ‘How I Met Your Father,’ which is a standalone sequel to the extremely popular ‘How I Met Your Mother.” The series stars Hilary Duff (‘Cheaper by the Dozen 2’) as Sophie, and Kim Cattrall (‘Sex and the City’) as future Sophie, as well as Chris Lowell, Francia Raisa, Tom Ainsley, Tien Tran, Suraj Sharma, and Josh Peck.

Moviefone recently had a chance to speak with the cast of ‘How I Met Your Father’ including Hilary Duff, Chris Lowell, Tien Tran, Francia Raisa, Tom Ainsley, and Suraj Sharma, as well as executive producers Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker.

    OfYDAvI6

Below, you can read our full interview with Hilary Duff, Chris Lowell, and Tien Tran, or you can watch all of our ‘How I Met Your Father’ interviews in the video player above.

Moviefone: Hilary, I’m sure you were aware of, and maybe even a fan of ‘How I Met Your Mother.’ So, what was your initial reaction when you received the script before you even started reading it?

Hilary Duff: I think I was a little apprehensive just hearing the title, and then of hearing that Isaac and Elizabeth wanted to talk to me on the phone and doing my research on them, I was like, “Oh. Oh yeah, yeah. No, I’m interested.” And then I read the script and that was that. It needed a little bit of work because it was about four or five years old, so was just a little dated in jokes and stuff.

But the characters. I mean, I fell in love with Sophie. I knew that I could play that role and I knew what I could bring to the table. Honestly, Isaac and Elizabeth could sell me anything. So, it was kind of just one of those moments where you know that yes is the right answer. It was really forced that this is not a reboot. We’re not trying to remake a show. We’re borrowing a concept and we’re creating all new characters and that’s that. So, it was a yes from day one. I was thrilled. I can’t believe someone wanted to hire me when I was nine and a half months pregnant.

MF: Mentioning that, you aren’t in the same time of your life as your character Sophie is. How did you build her? And when you step onto that stage, who is she to you?

HD: You know what? I was single for a long time. No, we’ve had totally different adulthoods, but I was single. I just, I was single with a child. So, kind of a little bit more to navigate there. But I feel like I know her, and she is open and willing. She just believes what she believes, and she knows there’s that person out there for her. And she’s kind and warm, and she will do anything for a friend. She is a nurturer to the max. I think a lot of those things are me. So, I got the character right away.

But I think what really drew me in was the friend circle and the relationships there, and knowing that I was going to have this amazing cast come in. And that’s where the real story is. All of the hope that those relationships bring to one another.

MF: Chris, when you built your character and when you step onto that stage, who is Jesse to you?

Chris Lowell: I think there’s definitely some similarities between the two of us. I think what I like about Jesse is that even though he has this kind of cynical dry exterior, I think that it’s pretty thinly veiled, and underneath that is someone who is very idealistic and hopeful. I love allowing these characters to pull out of him the more youthful, more hopeful, more exuberant self. It’s a fun dynamic to play on set, to try not to laugh and then let these people make me laugh. You know what I mean? That’s a really fun way to come to work every day. So, in that way, I think that Jesse and I have a lot in common and I love playing him.

MF: Tien, same question for you. When you built your character and when you step onto that stage, who is Ellen to you?

Tien Tran: I will quickly say that I love playing Ellen, and we have a lot of similarities in that she’s very excitable and she is excited to just take on any new challenge. As you know, she’s recently divorced and ready to get out there and start dating again. So, I think she has this hope and kind of optimism. She set the bar kind of low. She just wants to go on a date with a woman. So, we’ll see how that ends up for her. I think it’s so great that she is coming from a small town, but she’s very worldly in that she’s confident, and she says what she thinks, and if her friends take it, then they accept it. But if not, she’s cool with them just being weirded out by her too.

  • ‘Moon Knight’ Trailer Premiere

'Moon Knight' premieres March 30th on Disney+
‘Moon Knight’ premieres March 30th on Disney+

Premiering Monday night during the NFL football game between the Arizona Cardinals and the Los Angeles Rams was the first full trailer for the upcoming Disney+ series ‘Moon Knight,’ which begins March 30th and stars Oscar Isaac (‘Dune’) as the classic Marvel comic book character.

Commonly referred to as the “Batman of the Marvel Universe,” in the comics Moon Knight is a former Marine and CIA operative named Marc Spector, who suffers from dissociative identity disorder, and powered by the Egyptian Moon God Khonshu, becomes the vigilante known as Moon Knight. The character was created by writer Doug Moench and artist Don Perlin, and first appeared in “Werewolf by Night” #32 in 1975.

Created by Jeremy Slater (‘The Umbrella Academy’), the six-episode series will be directed by Mohamed Diab (‘Cairo 678’), as well as Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (‘Synchronic’), and it is set in the MCU.

Oscar Isaac plays Marc Spector and the series will explore his different personalities, including Steven Grant and Jake Lockley, while the character “is drawn into a deadly war of gods with his multiple identities.” Ethan Hawke (‘The Magnificent Seven’) has signed on to play the show’s villain.

The trailer beings with Oscar Isaac suddenly waking up and finding himself chained to a bed. We discover that this is his Steven Grant persona and that he is seeing visions of things that are not there. “I think I’m losing it,” says the character in a voice over. “I can’t tell the difference between life and dreams.”

We then see him walking through an Egyptian exhibit at a museum and finding a ringing cell phone. A female voice says, “Oh my God! You’re still alive? What’s wrong with you, Marc?” Isaac’s character then says, “Why did you call me Marc?”

We are then introduced to Ethan Hawke’s character, who seems to be a cult leader. He says to Spector, “It must be very difficult the voices in your head. There is chaos in you.” We then see a series of action sequences including Spector holding a gun, driving a truck, running, falling off a cliff, in an asylum, and in Egypt. Then an unidentified voice says, “Embrace the chaos.”

We then see Spector forming into Moon Knight with his full white, comic book accurate costume. He violently beats up a bad guy, before turning directly to the camera and walk out of view with glowing white eyes. After the title card, we get one last shot of Moon Knight, in costume, jumping from one rooftop to another with the crescent moon behind him.

Marvel Studios also released the official poster for the series, which you can see in full below. ‘Moon Knight’ premieres on Disney+ beginning March 30th.

The second half of the season is meant to be verrry different from the first, which can only mean actual light is at the end of this dark tunnel.

    “Lights Out”
Your electric bill may not appreciate this one, but the horror film starring Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, Billy Burke, Maria Bello, and Alexander DiPersia is available for digital purchase October 11, before the Blu-ray and DVD debut October 25. Palmer plays Rebecca, who grew up never knowing that was real and not real when the lights went out. Now her little brother Martin (Bateman) is experiencing the same terrifying events that tested her sanity. Be very afraid of the dark!

“Goliath” (Amazon)This Amazon Original Series — from David E. Kelley and Jonathan Shapiro — stars Billy Bob Thornton as a disgraced lawyer on the road to redemption after he agrees to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit against the biggest client of his former law firm. As Variety wrote, in a review praising Thornton’s performance, “‘Goliath’ is essentially a combination of two stalwart TV forms — the law drama and the antihero serial — but Kelley and star Billy Bob Thornton imbue the proceedings with a great deal of texture, specificity, and energy. If you like an enjoyably combative courtroom scene or testy depositions in which prickly, smart people spar, ‘Goliath’ has a number of moments that recall the most bracing episodes of ‘The Good Wife.’” Sounds good from here! The 10 episodes premiere October 14 on Amazon Video.

    TV Worth Watching

John Jarratt reprises his movie role as the murdering psychopath Mick Taylor, who wreaks havoc in the Australian Outback. Except this time, things are little bit different: In the TV story, a 19-year-old American college student, played by Lucy Fry, survives the massacre of her parents and little brother and sets out to hunt down the killer and avenge her family.

Julianne Nicholson, one of the best and most underrated actresses out there, stars as Sheriff Helen Torrance in this new crime drama — based on a Norwegian series — starting October 16. The first episode, called “Buffalo ’07,” opens with teenagers Philip and Lukas meeting to share a kiss, then witnessing a murder, which they don’t report out of fear being outed. Complicating matters: Philip’s foster mom is the sheriff, who’s soon investigating the case.

“Mascots” (Netflix Original)Get ready to cheer, Christopher Guest fans! The comedy icon’s latest mockumentary is available on Netflix October 13. Sounds vaguely like a “Best in Show” for mascots, so let’s hope it’s up to the same standard. (Or maybe even up to the 11 standard of “This Is Spinal Tap” and “Waiting For Guffman.”)

“Sky Ladder: The Art of Cai Guo-Qiang” (Netflix Original)
Director Kevin Macdonald showcases Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang’s in this explosive (literally!) documentary available for streaming on Netflix starting October 14. As Entertainment Weekly described, “[T]he documentary spends much of its svelte 76 minutes focusing on the one dream that has eluded Cai for 20 years: Sky Ladder, a 1,650 foot vertical trail of fire climbing into the skies. With Macdonald at the helm, plus Wes Anderson’s career-long cinematographer Robert Yeoman behind the camera, the film becomes a spectacle on par with one of Cai’s incredible artworks.” Watch the trailer over here.

  • The Best Shows to Watch With Your Dog

FrasierAny dog lover will tell you: They’ll do anything to keep their pooch happy and comfortable, even change their own habits. And if you’ve ever looked at your own dog and felt like he was paying as much attention to the TV screen as you were, you may be right. It depends on the breed, but some dogs really do get lost in the latest show their owner is bingeing on. And while they obviously can’t follow the plot twists and turns of, say, “Breaking Bad,” dogs do respond to visual and auditory stimuli.

Your dog might be looking for more than a cuddle when he snuggles up next to you as you’re watching a show. If you want to change your lineup to give your furry friend the best viewing experience possible, here are a few dog-friendly shows to try.

    ‘Frasier’ (1993 – 2004)

Your pup won’t get the jokes Frasier (Frasier” is for you; the antics of the show’s highly trained fur baby are for your best friend.

    ‘The Wire’ (2002 – 2008)

Chances are, your pet loses it completely at the sound of a doorbell, the pop of fireworks, and the roar of the vacuum cleaner. Television shows can actually help get your dog used to everyday noises. Try a crime drama like Baltimore-set “The Wire,” which details with excruciating realism the ongoing stalemate between the city’s law enforcement and the drug trade. Gunshots, door slams, cars peeling out — any dog who learns how to endure all that will be cool as a cucumber when the mailman arrives.

    ‘Nashville’ (2012 – )

This drama based in the cutthroat world of country music was just saved from extinction by CMT. A huge part of the appeal of “Nashville” is the songs themselves. The cast is stacked with more than serviceable singers, like Connie Britton and Charles Esten as power couple Rayna James and Deacon Claybourne. And real-life country stars pop by the show to perform all the time. Your dog will be soothed by those twangy ballads while you’re focused on the industry hookups and betrayals.

    ‘Broadchurch’ (2013 – )

Broadchurch” are the next best thing to letting your dog off-leash to prance around in the surf.

    ‘Game of Thrones’ (2011 – )

Hear this out: “Game of Thrones” might be the best show ever for dogs. The saga of the quest for rule over the entire fictional kingdom of Westeros has everything a pup could be looking for in a viewing experience. Lush locations: Check. A colorful palette and rich soundscape: Check. Direwolves that look like some of their dog park friends: Check. The battles on the HBO fantasy series may also appeal to a dog’s heightened motion sensitivity. And the show will remind you to always keep your pup’s food bowl full.
