    • Disney’s live-action take on ‘Tangled’ is firming up its cast.
    • Kathryn Hahn is in talks to be the calculating Mother Gothel.
    • Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim have landed the lead roles.

Now that ‘Tangled’ is once more a going concern for Disney on the live-action front, the cast is starting to come together.

While Scarlett Johansson was previously reported as being in talks to play Mother Gothel, the role now looks to be going to someone even more suited to it: ‘Agatha All Along’s Kathryn Hahn, who Deadline reports is in talks.

And she’s not alone: ‘Titans’ veteran Teagan Croft and ‘Zombies’ star Milo Manheim have locked in the lead roles of Rapunzel and charming rogue Flynn Rider respectively, per The Hollywood Reporter.

    What’s the story of ‘Tangled’?

Directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, the original ‘Tangled’ starred Mandy Moore as Rapunzel, a spirited young princess with magical, golden hair who escapes from her isolated tower for the first time to experience the world, embarking on an adventure with a charming thief (Zachary Levi), only to discover her true identity and face the dangerous truth about the woman called Mother Gothel (Donna Murphy) who kept her captive.

The 50th film released by Disney’s feature animated arm, it had a script from Dan Fogelman, who would go on to create TV hit ‘This is Us.’

The movie was a huge success with both critics and audiences, grossed over $590 million worldwide, scored an Oscar nomination for original song “I See the Light,” and was among the films revitalizing Disney’s princess genre for a new generation.

Who is working on the ‘Tangled’ live-action movie?

While casting is still at a very early stage, the movie has ‘The Greatest Showman’ and ‘Better Man’ director Michael Gracey still attached to call the shots, working from a script by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson based on the animated version.

Croft may perhaps be best known for playing Raven in the DC series ‘Titans’, which ran from 2018 to 2023.

She also starred in the Australian movie ‘True Spirit,’ portraying Jessica Watson, the teenage sailor who attempted a solo journey to circumnavigate the globe.

Manheim, the son of actress Camryn Manheim, showed his musical chops over the course of four ‘Zombies’ movies, the popular franchise that combines the undead with snappy songs about being in love and an outsider. In addition to also starring in Paramount+ series ‘School Spirits,’ he starred as Seymour in a revival of ‘Little Shop of Horrors.’

When will the live-action ‘Tangled’ be on screens?

Disney has yet to confirm a release date for the movie, though since it appears to be gearing up for a shoot this year, a 2027 premiere seems likely.

    • ‘The Greatest Showman’s Michael Gracey remains attached to direct.

What a difference a hit makes.

While Disney had been looking to add ‘Tangled’ to its roster of animated-to-live-action conversion movies, development on the film was paused back in April when ‘Snow White’ failed to be the fairest (or most successful) of them all at the box office.

But now, in the wake of ‘Lilo & Stitch’ making more than $1.3 billion, it is back on track, though without a formal greenlight.

And it also appears to represent a thawing of relations between Scarlett Johansson and the studio, who despite suing over earnings from ‘Black Widow’, has remained attached via a producing deal and now, via Deadline, is circling the role of Mother Gothel.

  • Disney Developing ‘Tangled’ Live-Action Movie

    • Disney is adding ‘Tangled’ to its animated-to-live-action conversion catalogue.
    • ‘The Greatest Showman’ director Michael Gracey is in talks to handle the movie.
    • Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is writing the script.

Having enjoyed a fair amount of success turning its animated back catalogue into live-action movies, Disney is looking to turn that cash geyser on once more.

At least, according to Deadline, which reports that the studio is now putting a live-action version of 2010’s ‘Tangled’ into development.

    33552

The original animated adventure, which adapts the classic Brothers Grimm tale about the young woman with the long flowing locks whose hair helps her escape imprisonment in a tower, is just the latest film making the move from animation to live-action (or at least live-action with some CG).

And director Michael Gracey is the man in talks to make it all happen.

    What’s the story of ‘Tangled’?

2010's 'Tangled'. Photo: Walt Disney Studios.
2010’s ‘Tangled’. Photo: Walt Disney Studios.

Directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, the original ‘Tangled’ starred Mandy Moore as Rapunzel, a spirited young princess with magical, golden hair who escapes from her isolated tower for the first time to experience the world, embarking on an adventure with a charming thief (Zachary Levi), only to discover her true identity and face the dangerous truth about the woman (Donna Murphy) who kept her captive.

Composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater were behind the film’s music.

Despite its big impact, the film has yet to spur a sequel. According to producer Ray Conli, it wasn’t for want of pressure from the studio.

Here’s what Conli told Den of Geek in 2015:

“There was a desire to somehow take it into a filmic sequel. But the directors weren’t really interested in doing that. Her hair was gone! There you go!”

Still, there was ‘Tangled Ever After,’ a short that played before a 3D theatrical re-release of ‘Beauty and the Beast ‘and on the Disney Channel, and the Disney Channel animated series ‘Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure.’

The new movie has seemingly been in development for a while, as Deadline’s report mentions that Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who contributed to the script for ‘Thor: Love & Thunder’ and wrote/directed Netflix’s ‘Do Revenge,’ wrote the most recent draft of the new ‘Tangled’s script.

Robinson is currently at work on Sony’s reboot of ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer.’

Who could star in the new ‘Tangled’?

2010's 'Tangled'. Photo: Walt Disney Studios.
2010’s ‘Tangled’. Photo: Walt Disney Studios.

Disney has naturally not commented on the new movie, so casting is likely a ways off. But with Gracey closing in on a deal, we’d expect announcements to come soon.

While neither Moore nor Levi (he especially given his political views) are likely to return for much more than cameos, some (including Levi) have suggested ‘Dune’ and ‘A Complete Unknown’s Timothée Chalamet as a potential Flynn.

That said, he seems unlikely to tackle the job.

Fans, meanwhile, have been talking up the combo of Disney channel veteran (and current pop star) Sabrina Carpenter as Rapunzel and ‘Red White and Royal Blue’s Taylor Zakhar Perez.

We’ll have to wait and see who ends up in the key roles.

Much more important in our opinion is finding the right horse (real or CG) to play Maximus, the stubborn, sarcastic horse who steals the movie from under the main characters.

Gracey right now is best known for his zeitgeisty directorial debut, ‘The Greatest Showman,’ one of the highest grossing live-action musicals of all time, starring Hugh Jackman as P.T. Barnum, which took in more than $435 million worldwide and earned a number of major accolades, including a Grammy and a Golden Globe.

The film’s soundtrack in particular became a big sensations, with the likes of “The Greatest Show” and “This Is Me” –– co-written by ‘La La LandOscar winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul –– turning into crossover pop hits.

Gracey co-wrote, directed and produced ‘Better Man,’ a semi-autobiographical musical about British pop icon Robbie Williams, in which he’s portrayed as a chimpanzee through some impressive visual effects.

What other animated-to-live-action conversions does Disney have on the way?

Mufasa in Disney’s 'Mufasa: The Lion King'.

The more recent likes of ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ ‘Maleficent,’ ‘Cinderella’ ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Cruella’ are notable in the annals of Disney raiding its cartoon catalogue for re-imaginations, the idea stretches further back, including 1994 take on ‘The Jungle Book,’ the two movies based on ‘101 Dalmatians’ and ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.’

They haven’t all been hits –– Robert Zemeckis’ version of ‘Pinocchio’ was a noted flop that went straight to streaming on Disney+.

Yet the blips haven’t stopped the flow of these productions. Coming next is ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ (a prequel to Jon Favreau’s 2019 CG take on the tale), while in 2025 we can expect ‘Snow White’ and ‘Lilo & Stitch.’ 2026 promises ‘Moana,’ while the likes of ‘Bambi’ and ‘The Aristocats’ are in development.

When will the new ‘Tangled’ be in theaters?

With the film at such an early stage, Disney has yet to confirm the movie’s existence, let alone when it might land on screens.

With the schedule full for the next couple of years, we wouldn’t imagine this would arrive much before 2027.

Gimme gimme gimme a liiiive-action “Tangled.”

Cher and Amanda Seyfried are now busy singing ABBA songs on the big screen in “Mamma Mia! 2,” but they are also currently frontrunners for the live-action “Tangled” movie that Disney has not actually announced and may never actually make.

Still! The “Here We Go Again” costars look nearly identical to the animated Mother Gothel and Rapunzel from Disney’s animated “Tangled.” Fans noticed the resemblance, after a “Mamma Mia! 2” event photo went viral.

Now fans are pushing Disney for a movie and dream-casting other live-action roles:

Yes, please. Keep dream casting. Disney doesn’t *have* to keep making live-action adaptations … but since they’re going to anyway, they may as well add “Tangled” to the list.

By the way, that list now includes “Aladdin,” “Dumbo,” “The Lion King,” “Mulan,” “Lady and the Tramp,” “Maleficent 2,” “Prince Charming,” and many, many more.

  • Tokyo DisneySea to Add ‘Frozen,’ ‘Tangled,’ and ‘Peter Pan’ Areas and Attractions With Biggest Expansion Yet

Tokyo DisneySea parkgoers will have more ground to cover in the not-so-distant future. The park announced Thursday that its largest expansion ever is in the works.

The theme park currently has seven themed ports where visitors can find attractions inspired by beloved Disney movies such as “Toy Story,” “The Little Mermaid,” and more. Come 2022, the list will grow; parkgoers will be able to explore the kingdom or Arendelle from “Frozen,” the forest where Rapunzel lived in “Tangled,” and Neverland from “Peter Pan.” Each area will include a new restaurant and new attractions. A luxury hotel will also open in the magical springs-themed port with two restaurants and a merchandise shop.

Not surprisingly, the huge expansion comes with a hefty price tag. Adding the port will cost $2.3 billion, according to Variety. However, Oriental Land, the company that operates the park, will reportedly bring in an extra $460 million per year once the port is up and running.

Between the seven ports that DisneySea already boasts and the eighth one that’s coming, park visitors will have some serious exploring to do.

  • Mandy Moore Is Not a Fan of the Theory Linking ‘Tangled’ & ‘Frozen’

Mandy Moore makes the most horrified face when told about the “morbid” fan theory connecting Disney’s “Tangled” and “Frozen” — not to mention “The Little Mermaid.”

Moore voices Rapunzel in “Tangled: The Series,” which just premiered on the Disney Channel. In a video interview with TVLine, the “This Is Us” star was asked if she’d heard of the “crazy” fan theory.

She said no, so the interviewer explained the theory that the parents of “Frozen” characters Anna and Elsa died in a shipwreck on the way to the wedding of “Tangled” characters Rapunzel and Flynn Rider. The theory suggests that’s why we see Flynn and Rapunzel in Arendelle for Queen Elsa’s coronation in “Frozen.”

That’s the only part that Moore was told and she reacted with horror. The reporter asked if it was the most morbid thing she’d ever heard. Moore answered, “That’s a pretty morbid fan theory. It feels like someone’s really reaching — like into ‘Lost’ territory or something.” Or “This Is Us” territory, she allowed. “There is no connection, as far as I know. I don’t think there’s any connection, no. But sure. People can imagine what they will all day. That’s their prerogative.”

A fan theory on Tumblr added “The Little Mermaid” to the equation, saying it’s possible the sunken ship in “The Little Mermaid” was actually the king and queen of Arendelle’s lost ship. Their post even included maps of the locations — Corona in Germany, Arendelle in Norway, and “Mermaid” near Denmark — to argue that it’s possible.

The fan theory is sad, but not really morbid. And it would further prove that Disney is a small world, after all.

  • ‘Zootopia’ May Be the ‘Most Easter Egg-Packed Movie Ever Made by Disney’

Disney's ZOOTOPIAThis weekend, “Zootopia” joins the illustrious Disney legacy of people-less, all-animal animated movies, like “Robin Hood” and “The Lion King.” Directors Byron Howard and Rich Moore bring us a new take on the genre by creating a world not unlike our own, filled only with anthropomorphic animals, some of whom call the big, sprawling city of Zootopia their home. The movie tackles a number of social and emotional issues, while, at the same time, breaking new ground in computer animation.

We sat down with directors Moore and Howard to talk about the early days of “Zootopia” and the long road to becoming (potentially) one of the most important (and impactful) Disney movies to date.ZOOTOPIA directors byron howard and rich mooreIn early concept art, “Zootopia” seemed to have a very different look and story. Can you talk about how the movie went from space bunny adventure to animal metropolis film noir?

Byron Howard: One of the ideas was about animals in space hunting space animals. The other idea was the “The Island of Doctor Meow” that had a Roger Corman B-movie feel about a mad scientist who had a savage serum. So you see little bits of these ideas sort of floating around back then. All these ideas had anthropomorphic animals in them cause I loved “Robin Hood” growing up. John Lasseter was also a fan of that genre of Disney classic cartoons. He said, “I will fully support any movie that features animals running around in tiny clothing.” He got on board and loved the idea of doing it. He really did charge us with making it different from any other animals movie before. He said, “Don’t think about story, just go off and do research.”

We did about seven or eight months of research. We talked to animal experts and sociologists. Experts about how cities get built and formed and then he sent us down here to Disney’s Animal Kingdom and we talked to experts down here who helped us figure out animals personalities. And then finally he said, “Go to Kenya.”

Kenya is amazing. He sent about 14 of us, including a lot of our leadership in different departments of the film, to Kenya. And they were all looking for something different. The animators were looking for movement and how animals’ fur behaves in light, and we came back completely changed and making the film way more in-depth than when we first left. It really did change our viewpoint on what we were going to do.

Computer-generated animation has come a long, long way. In older movies, hair was more like a blob on a character’s head. Now you can see the breakthroughs Disney’s made, from the hair in “Tangled” to the fur in “Zootopia.” It’s outstanding.

Rich Moore: Our technology took a huge step forward on the movie “Big Hero 6,” because they came up with this new software with a rendering system and lighting system called Hyperion. That makes it possible now to just render out an incredible amount of information per frame on our films. We now have the ability to kind of light scenes more organically, from where light sources come from. The process is sped up so much faster now, and when we’re reviewing animation we’re able to see it looking more like the finished frame.A WORLD FOR BIG AND SMALL — Walt Disney Animation Studios' "Zootopia" features a vast world where humans never existed. With advanced transportation systems that accommodate mammals of all shapes and sizes, the modern mammal metropolis was built by animals for animals. Directed by Byron Howard and Rich Moore, and produced by Clark Spencer, "Zootopia" opens in U.S. theaters on March 4, 2016. ©2016 Disney. All Rights Reserved.Speaking of “Big Hero 6,” that reminds me of how Disney’s movies have been doing a great job of teaching audiences important moral lessons. That movie dealt with loss, and “Zootopia” feels current in exploring the need for empathy as a theme for the characters living in this big city. Is that something you looked to bring forward?

Howard: That’s a very smart question. You’re actually the first one to articulate the question about empathy, which is a central part of what Judy is, I think in building who Judy [Hopps] (Ginnifer Goodwin) is as a character. I go back to the original “Superman” movie, with Christopher Reeve. What I really love about that film wasn’t that he was a superhero it was that he was compassionate. That’s what I think made that film work for me when I saw it when I was 10.

I saw this person who cared and wanted to make a difference in the world, who had these feelings and this desire to make people happy, and I think that’s where Judy comes from, too; the fact that she sort of has this great Frank Capra-esque core but is still a flawed character that has something to learn, to mature. She does and she becomes a more whole character through this very challenging relationship that she has with this very smart fox. They’re both incredibly smart characters. And the fact that she wants to do good in the world but he keeps knocking down her sort of sunny disposition in saying, “Look, it’s not that easy. Things aren’t like that.” The fact that they actually bond over when he was a kid, he wanted the same things. That gave us very strong threads to pull on in the story, and I think that’s why people really are connecting with her. I think everyone wants to make a difference throughout the world but we find it’s sometimes more challenging than we anticipate.

Moore: I think that the key was letting Judy make a mistake. Letting her not be perfect, not a sterling kind of Eagle Scout of a character that never makes a mistake. If you like silly puns, there’s some and there’s groaners. If you like Disney references, I think it may be the first time, maybe “Aladdin” had a few with the Genie, but we went for it because we wanted it to feel like our world. In their world, they have their version of Disney movies. Let’s show ’em.

Howard: Here’s one that no one knows yet. Our character designer is a big fan of Patrick Swayze‘s “Road House,” and one of the villains wears a t-shirt that is a homage to the bar in “Road House.”
