  • Liam Neeson in Talks for New ‘Naked Gun’ Movie

Liam Neeson as Bryan Mills in 2012's 'Taken 2.'
Liam Neeson as Bryan Mills in 2012’s ‘Taken 2.’

Sitting happily near the top of most peoples’ list of the best movie comedies is surely David Zucker’s ‘The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!’. The 1988 cop spoof is likely best remembered for Leslie Nielsen’s iconic performance as super-serious but also often incompetent police officer Frank Drebin.

While its two sequels were of mixed quality, the original has stood the test of time.

The pressure is on, then, for anything thinking about rebooting the movie. Yet that’s just what Paramount is looking to director Akiva Schaffer to do, and he has Liam Neeson – a man more known for his dramatic or action roles than comedy – set to star.

‘The Naked Gun’ was drawn (as per the title) from Zucker, brother Jerry, Jim Abrams and Pat Proft’s comedy series ‘Police Squad!’ which introduced Drebin as an LAPD detective. He’s a great cop, but usually accidentally, and the movies, like the series are crammed with jokes.

Also starring Priscilla Presley and Ricardo Montalban, ‘The Naked Gun’ followed a plot to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II during a visit to Los Angeles. There is mind control, a baseball game and (somewhat more controversially these days), O.J. Simpson as a fellow officer.

There are no concrete details about what the story will be for the new movie, but the original script came from Mark Hentemann and Alec Sulkin. Schaffer is teaming back up with ‘Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers’ writers Dan Gregor and Doug Mand to create their own draft.

Leslie Nielsen as Lt. Frank Drebin in 1988’s ‘The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!’

Given how successfully funny the ‘Rescue Rangers’ movie was, reworking existing characters for new entertainment, this new ‘Gun’ feels like it could be in safe hands.

According to Deadline, though, the story could revolve around the son of Frank Drebin, rather than anyone trying to step into Nielsen’s shoes. Which seems like a smart move to us – there really is no replicating Leslie Nielsen.

Neeson is not necessarily the first person we’d have thought of for a new ‘Naked Gun’, but it’s worth remembering that Nielsen, was known as a dramatic actor before turning his hand to deadpan comedy – but he excelled at the style partly thanks to the ZAZ/Proft team, who broke new laugh-grabbing ground with the ‘Airplane!’ movies and ‘Top Secret!,’ among others.

So there is precedent. And it’s not as though Neeson has eschewed comedy altogether. He’s shown up in films and shows from Seth MacFarlane and did great work in ‘The Lego Movie’. Plus, who didn’t find ‘Battleship’ hilarious? Just us? Okay.

It’s MacFarlane who is partly responsible for Neeson’s presence here – he came up with the idea to cast the actor and got in touch with him.

Paramount has yet to flash the greenlight for this one, but with the creative team and cast starting to come together, it’s certainly moving towards that way.

  • Liam Neeson Talks ‘Memory’

    Scot Williams and Liam Neeson

Opening in theaters on April 29th is the new action thriller ‘Memory’ from director Martin Campbell (‘Casino Royale’).

The movie stars Liam Neeson (‘Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace’) as Alex Lewis, an expert assassin who refuses to complete a job for a dangerous criminal organization and becomes a target for their revenge. With his expert skills, Alex is able to stay one step ahead, except he is struggling with severe memory loss, which is affecting his every move.

In addition to Neeson, the film also features Monica Bellucci (‘The Matrix Reloaded’), Guy Pearce (‘Memento’), Louis Mandylor (‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’), and Ray Stevenson (‘Punisher: War Zone‘).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Liam Neeson about his work on ‘Memory.’

    dOW9GYuE

You can read our full interview with Liam Neeson about ‘Memory’ below or watch our interviews with Neeson and Monica Bellucci by clicking on the video player above.

Moviefone: To begin with, while this character is similar to roles you’ve played in the past, he’s also dealing with memory loss. Is that why you wanted to play the part, because its different than your other roles yet in the same wheelhouse?

Liam Neeson: Yeah, I’ve done quite a few action films, as you may know. This one was special because it deals with very sensitive and horrendous crimes, especially those of child prostitution. I’m a Goodwill UNICEF Ambassador and have been for a number of years, and I do get access to material if a tragedy happens in some country. UNICEF are usually always one of the first groups of people there in order to protect children from sex traffickers, so I’m acutely aware of it.

I thought, it’s the basis of our story. My character, who is an assassin and has been for 40 years, knows he’s dying and wants to redeem himself in some way by finding the culprits in this ring of child prostitution. It was very interesting to do research, especially on the Alzheimer’s dementia aspect. It was a character that I just find very rich to delve into and enjoyed it immensely.

MF: Can you talk about how you prepared to play a character with Alzheimer’s?

LN: Gosh, it’s hard to describe. Obviously, there’s various documentaries I’ve watched on it, several books I’ve read on it, and I guess just my own actor’s experience. I’m not blowing smoke up my ass, but I’ve made a hundred films as of last Christmas, so I have a certain amount of experience.

I tried to work very closely with Martin Campbell, the director, to find little moments where I could introduce aspects of this Alzheimer’s or dementia, without getting in the way of the thrust of the story in the film. It is an action thriller, but it has these layers of moral ambiguity. Let’s put it that way. Every day, going to work was interesting. I’m getting a chance to work with Guy Pearce and Monica Bellucci. I was like a kid in a candy store, I’ll be very honest with you.

MF: Finally, your character is a self-described “bad guy,” but he also has a moral compass. Can you talk about that?

LN: It comes out in the story. I don’t know if you remember but when the police are sharing information, they know that he and his brother were abused as kids by their father. That is discussed. He comes from a battered family, an abused family, he and his elder brother, and so that has helped form a moral code for him, that absolutely no child should be touched or harmed in any way.

  • 11 Things You Didn’t Know About ‘Taken’ on its 10th Anniversary

11 Things You Didn’t Know About ‘Taken’ on its 10th Anniversary

    Fox

It’s been ten years since a little action movie called “Taken” hit theaters, completely transforming Liam Neeson‘s career and proving that audiences are perfectly happy to watch middle-aged action heroes rack up a Schwarzenegger-worthy body count. To celebrate this anniversary, here are some interesting facts you might not know about the movie that spawned a franchise.

    1. Producer Luc Besson pitched the premise of “Taken” to director Pierre Morel over dinner, with Morel immediately latching onto the father/daughter angle.

    2. Before Liam Neeson signed on to star, Jeff Bridges was cast as Bryan Mills. No doubt that would have resulted in a very different sort of movie.

    Gramercy Pictures

    3. Neeson trained in multiple forms of armed and unarmed combat to prepare for the role. The martial arts form his character actually uses in the film is called Nagasu Do.

    4. Neeson seems as surprised by “Taken’s” success and resulting impact on his career as anyone. The actor has admitted to assuming “Taken” would be released as a direct-to-video movie.

    Fox

    5. “Taken” is often criticized for creating an unrealistic view of Europe as a dangerous place for American tourists, a perception Neeson has often worked to counteract.

    6. Mills kills no fewer than 35 people over the course of the movie.

    7. Maggie Grace revealed on an episode of “Conan” that when she was going through a bad breakup, Neeson phoned her ex-boyfriend in character as Bryan Mills to threaten him.

    Fox

    8. The budget for “Taken” was a modest $25 million, which is barely more than Neeson’s $20 million salary for “Taken 3.”

    9. Neeson has reprised the role of Bryan Mills multiple times outside of the “Taken” trilogy, including in a 2014 “Saturday Night Live” sketch and in a 2015 commercial for the mobile game “Clash of Clans.”

    Supercell

10.Scary Movie” creators Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer announced plans to direct a “Taken” parody called “Who The F#@k Took My Daughter?”. However, as of 2019 the film hasn’t materialized.

    11. In 2011, a man named William G. Hillar was convicted of wire fraud after impersonating a Green Beret and falsely claiming “Taken” was inspired by his own life.

  • Jennifer Garner Is Out for Revenge in ‘Peppermint’ Trailer

After spending years crafting a wholesome onscreen persona in family-friendly films, Jennifer Garner is finally returning to her ass-kicking, “Alias”-era roots in the new action flick, “Peppermint.”

The film is directed by “Taken” helmer Pierre Morel, and it’s not hard to see the influence: “Peppermint” features Garner’s character, Riley North, seeking revenge after her family is gunned down in front of her (at a carnival, on her daughter’s birthday no less), and the city’s corrupt cops, lawyers, and judges — paid off by the drug cartel behind the hit — fail to charge the assailants.

Riley spends five years off the grid, honing her own particular set of skills while she plots to take down not only the cartel, but those who turned a blind eye to her personal tragedy. (That tragedy also includes a truly terrible post-murder pixie cut, though thankfully that grows out while she’s off getting buff.) She resurfaces on the anniversary of her family’s murder and begins exacting vigilante justice throughout the community, killing bad guys and becoming a local folk hero.

    “She’s back,” one detective declares.

They might as well be talking about Garner herself. “Peppermint” looks like the perfect vehicle for the actress’s long-overdue return to the action genre, and could very well be the launch of her own Liam Neeson-style career renaissance. (Neesonaissance? Garnaissance? We’ll work on the name.)

The flick hits theaters on September 7.

  • ‘Taken’ Canceled By NBC After 2 Seasons

TAKEN -- "Leah" Episode 108 -- Pictured: Clive Standen as Bryan Mills -- (Photo by: Panagiotis Pantazidis/NBC)Bryan Mills’ very special set of skills won’t be needed anymore at NBC. The network has canceled “Taken” after two seasons.

The action drama was a prequel to the Liam Neeson trilogy of movies, with Clive Standen playing a younger version of the former Green Beret. After a devastating personal tragedy, Mills was recruited by the CIA and began developing the very special set of skills that he deployed in the movies.

Things didn’t look good for “Taken” when NBC moved the show in April from Fridays to Saturdays. The show averaged just 4.4 million viewers this season.

The producers are hoping to shop the drama around at other outlets.

  • He’s Back! Liam Neeson Says He’s ‘Unretired’ From Action Movies

'Mark Felt The Man Who Brought Down The White House' New York PremiereIf you’re an action movie, Liam Neeson will find you, and he will keeping starring in you, “until they bury me in the ground.”

Neeson just recently made headlines for supposedly retiring as an action star. At the Toronto Film Festival, Neeson said he was done with the genre, after becoming an unlikely action hero with the “Taken” franchise, and working on more “serious” projects. He figured at sixty-f*cking-five” he was getting too old for it.

Well, he’s still 65, but he no longer feels the same way. Variety asked him about his retirement, while on the red carpet premiere of his new film “Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House.”

“It’s not true, look at me!” Neeson told Variety, laughing about his retirement as an action star. “You’re talking in the past tense. I’m going to be doing action movies until they bury me in the ground. I’m unretired.”

Yas, king! He was probably just venting before, like when Daniel Craig said he’d rather slash his wrists than play James Bond again, and here he is playing James Bond again. Or maybe Neeson was worried that fans would mock him for trying to keep up with the Marvel crowd at 65. But fans were not happy at the idea of Neeson exiting stage left, so maybe that gave him the encouragement to keep going — until he’s buried in the ground.

His “Mark Felt” movie opens Friday.

  • Liam Neeson and His Set of Skills Are Retiring from Action Movies

2017 Toronto International Film Festival - 'Mark Felt - The Man Who Brought Down The White House' PremiereAudiences won’t be able to see Liam Neeson‘s very particular set of skills on the big screen for much longer: The actor says he’s retiring from action movies.

While speaking with reporters at the Toronto International Film Festival this week, Neeson — who became an unlikely action star thanks to his performance in the 2008 thriller “Taken” — revealed that he was done with the genre. According to the actor, he wants to work on more “serious” projects, and also says that he thinks he’s getting too old to believably headline such fare.

“They’re still throwing serious money at me to do that stuff,” Neeson said of the action offers he receives. “I’m like: ‘Guy’s I’m sixty-f******-five.’ Audiences are eventually going to go: ‘Come on.’”

While we tend to disagree that filmgoers will ever get sick of seeing Neeson kick ass on the big screen, he does make a good point about his ubiquity in the genre. The actor has been steadily pumping out action hits for almost a decade post-“Taken” (including two sequels to that flick), and currently has two more in the pipeline (“Hard Powder” and “The Commuter”).

But Neeson wasn’t always such a hard-hitting action star, and initially broke into Hollywood through more traditional dramatic fare, scoring accolades and awards nominations earlier in his career (including a 1994 Oscar nod for Best Actor for his work in Best Picture winner “Schindler’s List”). He took some detours into more mainstream flicks over the ensuing years (like “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace,” “Love Actually,” and “Batman Begins”), but it wasn’t until “Taken” that he became synonymous with action fare. A quick peek at his eclectic filmography makes it clear that Neeson would want to avoid being pigeonholed forever.

Neeson will have the chance to flex his acting muscle in a new genre when he plays the titular role in “Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House,” which just debuted at TIFF.

  • NBC’s ‘Taken’ Season 2 Is Dropping Six of Original Eight Series Regulars

If you starred in “Taken” Season 1, NBC will find you, and they will probably fire you.

The networked turned Liam Neeson’s “Taken” films into a TV series origin story, with the 2017 Season 1 ranging in viewers from 7.45 million (1.6/6 rating/share) for the premiere to around 4.40 million (0.8/3 rating/share) for the Episode 10 finale, despite a cushy spot following “The Voice.”

It was a bit of a surprise to see the show renewed for Season 2, but TVLine just reported that it’ll basically be a fresh start with only two series regulars returning — Clive Standen (a younger Bryan Mills, Neeson’s movie character) and Jennifer Beals (Christina Hart).

There were eight series regulars in Season 1. That means, TVLine reports, that these SIX stars are leaving:

    • Gaius Charles (John)
    • Brooklyn Sudano (Asha)
    • Monique Gabriela Curnen (Vlasik)
    • Michael Irby (Scott)
    • Jose Pablo Cantillo (Dave)
    • James Landry Hébert (Rem)

Some fans asked about Jennifer Marsala (Riley), but she’s one of the “recurring” stars, which isn’t always tied to screen time, it’s a contract thing. It’s not yet clear if she or fellow Season 1 recurring stars Simu Liu (Faaron) and Ali Kazmi (Marzoki) will return.

“Taken” just got a new showrunner in Greg Plageman (“Person of Interest”), which was probably a hint to the cast that big changes were coming, and the 16 episodes were moved from fall to midseason. Insiders told TVLine that Plageman has a new creative vision for Season 2. But it remains to be seen if 1) the loyal fans who stuck with Season 1 will want to return for this changed show and 2) the “new vision” can attract some desperately needed new viewers.

We’ll see what happens when “Taken” Season 2 arrives on NBC midseason 2018. Brainstorm: Pay Liam Neeson whatever you were paying those six actors combined and get him to at least book a cameo.
