Meanwhile, Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is still coming to terms with the “new” Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), who is now a Ravager. In order to save their friend, the Guardians must go on a dangerous mission that could lead to the team dissolving if they fail.

Moviefone: To begin with, James, what would you tell fans sitting down to watch this movie now to prepare them for the theater experience they are about to have?

James Gunn: I know so many of you have grown up with ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ So many of you have seen and supported us over the years. We’re so grateful to you for that and we really put our hearts and souls in this movie. We put in every ounce of everything we could, and I hope you guys enjoy it from the bottom of my heart.

MF: Chris, what would you say to the fans to get them ready for this movie?

Chris Pratt: First of all, I’d say thank you. Thank you. You sitting down in these seats right now are the reason the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ are the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ We’ve been able to full on live our dreams because of the support of the greatest fans in the world. Thank you so much. We really owe it all to you. James is extraordinary. He’s led me on this journey and he’s created what I think is the best of the three films. Buckle up and I hope you have some tissues nearby.

MF: James, can you talk about the decision to tell Rocket’s origin story in this movie and how his journey is the heart of the franchise?

JG: I’ve always thought of Rocket as sort of the heart of the ‘Guardian’s story. In a lot of ways he’s the least mature of the characters, he’s just been a very angry guy. I think that throughout the series we see characters do heroic things. Rocket does heroic things, but it’s only been for himself or for his friends. He doesn’t really have a sense of empathy for anyone beyond that, and this is a movie about how he became that way. We go back to where he was born, how he came about, how he was created by the High Evolutionary, and we learn everything about him and his tragic past.

MF: Finally, Chris, can you talk about your ‘Guardians’ experience, what playing Star-Lord, working on this franchise, and creating friendships with the cast and James has meant to you?

CP: It’s just now starting to hit me how grateful I am to have had a friend in James. It’s been amazing. He’s made my life. He’s changed my life. He’s changed the life of me and my family, my children, and probably their children. He took me by the hand. He found a working actor who had already at that point done way better than most people who come out to town. I wasn’t a waiter any longer, I was a series regular on a show. I was getting recognition. He brought me to a whole new level that ultimately changed the entire way the industry saw me. I no longer was auditioning. That was the last audition I ever had. So he changed my life.

    Initial Thoughts

While it’s not a perfect movie, James Gunn finishes his trilogy off with a heartfelt love letter to the franchise, in a character-driven movie that ties up loose ends and brings many arcs to a close. The actors are given room to explore their characters, and the villain is strong, but make no mistakes … this is Rocket’s movie!

    Story, Direction and Visual Effects

Full disclosure: I love the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ movies, in fact, they’re both in my top ten of MCU movies. But ‘Guardians 3’ is different than the previous films, its somber, character-driven, and darker, while still having James Gunn’s signature weirdness, humor, and music. The story ties up all the loose ends of the trilogy, including Quill and Gamora’s relationship, but really takes time to explore all the core characters, especially Rocket.

Obviously a lot of time is spent on Quill, Gamora, and Rocket, but Drax, Mantis, Nebula, Groot, and even Kraglin are all given their time to shine. The movie starts off slow and somber, and drags a bit in the middle, but has a very touching and action-packed third act. James Gunn clearly has an affection for this trilogy and these actors, and it shows in the film which is really a love letter to them.

For the most part, the visual effects work, and the colorful costumes and creatures are interesting and fun. But I do question the odd flesh-colored uniforms that the guards (including Nathan Fillion) wear at the High Evolutionary’s headquarters. They were just a little too weird and goofy for me, and distracted from the story.

    Rocket’s Storyline

Make no mistakes … this is Rocket’s movie! The film actually takes place in two timelines, flashing back throughout the movie to tell Rocket’s origin story. Over the course of the previous ‘Guardian’ movies and his appearances in ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame,’ Rocket’s become my favorite Marvel character and his story arc here is extremely touching. He’s the heart of the movie, and exploring his past while saying something about animal cruelty was both smart and affective. Some of the creatures we meet in his past are very creepy, but again, the message is not lost. While it’s only a voice role, Bradley Cooper’s “Gilbert Gottfried meets Bill the Butcher” performance has brought the character to life and his work here is touching, emotional, funny and makes Rocket a stronger character.

    Cast Performances

Chris Pratt is given a lot more emotional work to do with Quill this time around, and handles it well, especially his scenes with Gamora. Zoe Saldaña returns as the ‘Avengers: Endgame’ version of Gamora, allowing the actress to play a new character, in a sense. When the original Gamora died in ‘Infinity War,’ I was really sad to see her go because she had grown so much since the original film and I loved her relationship with Quill, but the new Gamora had really grown on me by the end of this film, thanks to Saldaña’s layered performance.

In a movie with so many characters, it’s easy for some to get lost in the shuffle and not get the screen time they deserve, but the movie balances the characters well and gives them all a moment to shine. Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, and even Sean Gunn, are all given time to explore their characters and grow through the course of the movie. As for Groot, he’s not a kid anymore and like Rocket, also has a great arc over the course of the trilogy, and surprisingly, Vin Diesel gets to do a little more in this movie than just say: “I Am Groot.”

Chukwudi Iwuji plays the High Evolutionary and is actually a pretty good Marvel villain. I found the performance menacing and effective, even though his ultimate evil plan is confusing at times. But his motivations and hubris made the character believable, and Iwuji gives a fun, if not over-the-top at times, performance.

Is Adam Warlock a Good Guy?

Yes and no. He’s an unwilling villain in the beginning, but has a change of heart over the course of the film, which I must say is paced well and is ultimately effective. But to be honest, I didn’t like the way the character was depicted, and didn’t care for Will Poulter’s performance, although it’s through no fault of his own. In the film, the character is the son of ‘Guardians Vol. 2’ baddie Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki), and is depicted as a brainless, bratty mama’s boy, and while the characterization gets a few laughs, it didn’t work for me knowing the character’s importance in the comics. Poulter physically transformed to play the role, and looks great, but for me, the character and performance just didn’t work.

Are There End-Credit Scenes in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?’

Yes. There are two in fact. The first sets up a possible future for the franchise, beyond the current lineup, and the second would set up a spinoff of sorts for one of the main characters. Both scenes are ‘Guardians’ centric and do not hint to any other upcoming MCU projects.

Will There Be a ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4?’

That’s hard to say at this time. James Gunn certainly is saying goodbye to the franchise, as he’ll be busy in the near future working on ‘Superman: Legacy’ and running DC Studios. As previously mentioned, the first end-credit scene does hint at a possible future installment, and the team teased for that is incredibly intriguing. As is the possibility of the spinoff teased in the other end-credit scene, with a character that is strong enough to carry their own film franchise, or at least a Disney+ series. Whether or not we will see any of the other Guardians in future Marvel projects, is anyone’s guess.

    Final Thoughts

In the end, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3’ is not a perfect film, and in some ways is not quite as fun as the previous two movies, but is a very loving sendoff to the current team and a dark and emotional look at these beloved characters.

Having pummeled the competition at the box office this past weekend, with a $58 million opening weekend and $110 million globally after less than a week on release, ‘Creed III’ has certainly confirmed that the sports franchise that grew from the ‘Rocky’ movies is alive, well and punching above its weight (the third movie, in fact, earned more in three days than its two predecessors did across five-day holiday launches).

So when Michael B. Jordan told Deadline last week that he’s “excited” about building a universe around boxer Adonis Creed, his family, friends and colleagues, it certainly sounds like we’re getting closer to that becoming a reality.

Deadline offers an update that several ideas are being discussed.

    HHLYJNRGGclIrW27eSNTM1

What could ‘Creed’ spin-offs look like?

It’s still early days on all of this, and neither Jordan, MGM nor Amazon (which owns MGM) are officially commenting, but word is that we could see an anime series based on the ‘Creed’ movies that would allow the team to tell more stories set in his world.

And, following on from ‘Creed III’, there is also talk of a show based around Adonis and Bianca (Tessa Thompson)’s daughter Amara, as played by deaf actress Mila Davis-Kent in the movie. What exactly that might be remains to be seen –– whether it follows her now or perhaps even in her adult life.

There’s also mention of a live-action series, but again, that’s still nebulous at this point.

    What about the ‘Drago’ spin-off?

First touted last July, the spin-off movie focused on Dolph Lundgren’s Ivan Drago and his son Viktor Drago (played by Florian Munteanu in 2018’s ‘Creed II’ and who popped up briefly in ‘Creed III’) appears to still be in development, with Robert Lawton writing the script.

There hasn’t been much word of it for now, though we’re sure Amazon would want Lundgren back on screens.

Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan in 'Creed II.'
(L to R) Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan in ‘Creed II.’

Will Sylvester Stallone be involved in the spin-offs?

Any new ‘Creed’ Development appears unlikely to feature involvement from Sylvester Stallone, who let’s not forget, is the progenitor and star of the entire ‘Rocky’ film franchise, without which there would be no ‘Creed’ in the first place.

Sly has been outspoken in his dissatisfaction with the lack of reciprocity when it comes to rights between himself and producer Irwin Winkler. The producer refused to hand the rights back to Stallone and the actor/writer has cut ties with the franchise.

And Sly’s issues extend to not even watching ‘Creed III’, in which he does not appear as Rocky. “You can’t make peace with someone who’s been so, so nefarious, in my opinion,” he told Jessica Shaw on Sirius XM.

Which means we’re unlikely to see ‘Rocky & Friends’ as one of the big new offerings from the Creed-verse. Though if the success of the latest movie has proved, Adonis Creed’s world has moved on from Rocky.

Everyone loves a good boxing movie!

While it is 1976’s Academy Award winning ‘Rocky‘ that is now considered the gold standard in boxing movies, there have been many great ones over the years including Martin Scorsese‘s ‘Raging Bull,’ the Oscar-winning Muhammad Ali documentary ‘When We Were Kings,’ as well as the biopic ‘Ali‘ starring Will Smith.

Not to mention the long running ‘Rocky’ franchise which has produced six ‘Rocky’ movies and three ‘Creed‘ spinoffs, including the latest, ‘Creed III,’ which is the first movie in the series to not feature Sylvester Stallone, but was directed by star Michael B. Jordan and opens in theaters on March 3rd.

Opening in theaters on March 3rd is the third film in the ‘Creed’ series and the ninth movie set in the ‘Rocky’ universe entitled ‘Creed III,’ which also marks the directorial debut of Adonis “Donnie” Creed actor Michael B. Jordan.

    What is ‘Creed III’ about?

Following the events of 2018’s ‘Creed II,’ Adonis “Donnie” Creed (Michael B. Jordan) is about to retire as the undisputed Heavy Weight Champion of the World. But when Creed’s childhood friend and former boxing prodigy, Damian “Dame” Anderson (Jonathan Majors), resurfaces after serving a long sentence in prison, he asks Donnie for help getting back into boxing, as he is determined to win the championship. Eventually, Donnie is forced back into the ring to fight his former friend, facing an opponent he’s never fought before – a fighter who has nothing to lose!

Who is in the cast of ‘Creed III?’

‘Creed III’ stars Michael B. Jordan (‘Black Panther’) as Adonis “Donnie” Creed, Tessa Thompson (‘Thor: Love and Thunder’) as Bianca Taylor, Jonathan Majors (‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’) as Damian “Dame” Anderson, Wood Harris (‘Blade Runner 2049’) as Tony “Little Duke” Evers, Florian Munteanu (‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’) as Viktor Drago, and Phylicia Rashad (‘Tick, Tick… Boom!’) as Mary Anne Creed.

    Initial Thoughts

In his third outing as Adonis Creed, Michael B. Jordan gives another strong and dedicated performance but it is his work behind the camera that is truly impressive, while Jonathan Majors steals every scene he is in with his menacing and electrifying performance as Damian Anderson.

Michael B. Jordan’s Direction and Performance

Michael B. Jordan is one of the best actors of his generation and has demonstrated this in moving independent features like ‘Fruitvale Station,’ and strong blockbusters like ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Creed.’ Returning for his third time as Adonis “Donnie” Creed, and first time without Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky Balboa (more on that later), Jordan gives a mature performance proving that the character has grown since the last we saw him.

This is an older Donnie, a successful professional athlete on the verge of retirement looking forward to spending more time with his aging mother, musician wife, and deaf daughter. But Donnie is haunted by his childhood living in an orphanage, before his father’s widow adopted him, and the dark secrets he has been hiding for most of his life. Once Damian returns, it stirs up these old feelings in Donnie, which Dame brilliantly uses to his advantage.

It seems as if Jordan is channeling some of himself into the role, as the megastar actor can relate to being financially successful, and the problems that comes with that level of success. But as Donnie, he also wants to protect his family and their future from the sins of his past. Donnie is not a lost boy anymore, as he was depicted in the first ‘Creed,’ he is now a man and a champion, and that comes shining through Jordan’s performance.

Jordan also has an extremely impressive directorial debut with ‘Creed III.’ Jordan balances the film’s tones of fighting for survival and redemption quite well, and even injects some humor into the film. Jordan clearly has learned a lot about filmmaking from his years on sets and from watching his mentor and collaborator director Ryan Coogler on ‘Fruitvale Station,’ ‘Creed’ and ‘Black Panther.’

While Jordan handles the emotions and drama of ‘Creed III’ very well, he also makes the fight scenes interesting, moving the camera around the ring with the fighters and using slow-motion sparingly but effectively. However, there is one choice Jordan made as a director that I completely disagree with and it actually took me out of the movie for a second. It’s a scene that comes towards the end of the film’s final fight sequence, so I will be careful not to give too much away. But Jordan makes a directorial choice to inject the fight with visual metaphors that hurt the reality of the fight scene itself, and for me, took the viewer completely out of the moment. I get what Jordan was going for, but I just don’t think it worked.

Why is Rocky not in ‘Creed III?’

‘Creed III’ marks the first film in the trilogy to not also feature Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky Balboa character. The trilogy is clearly a spinoff of the ‘Rocky’ franchise, and while the character is mentioned once or twice in passing, Balboa’s whereabouts and why he is no longer in Donnie’s corner are never revealed.

Jordan and the other filmmakers do a good job of creating a ‘Rocky’ movie without Rocky, and while it is still in the vein of the previous films in the franchise, they go out of their way to make it different from the other movies in the series. The “Theme from Rocky” or “Gonna Fly Now,” as it is better known, is barely used, if at all, and has been modified so you can barely hear it in the background.

There is also a moment where you can tell the filmmakers wanted to step away from what you would expect from a ‘Rocky’ movie. In the inevitable training montage, Donnie runs to the top of a hill overlooking the Los Angeles skyline. This would seem to be the perfect moment to have the theme start playing and for Donnie to pump his fists in the air, recreating the iconic moment on the Philadelphia Museum of Art stairs from the original ‘Rocky,’ which has been duplicated in almost every ‘Rocky’ movie since. But Jordan avoids that moment, like so many other typical ‘Rocky’ moments that the film ignores, which really places the movie into its own chapter of the ‘Rocky’ story.

But honestly, the real reason Rocky does not appear in ‘Creed III’ is more complicated. While Sylvester Stallone did create the characters in the ‘Rocky’ franchise and the original screenplay, he sold the rights to producer Irwin Winkler and MGM decades ago to get the first movie made, and thus has no real say in the future of the franchise. Apparently, Stallone did not agree with the direction Winkler, Jordan and ‘Creed’ director Ryan Coogler, who is given story credit on this movie, wanted to take the future of the franchise. Whether Stallone will ever play Balboa again on the big screen is yet to be known, but the actor does not appear in ‘Creed III’ and the character is barely mentioned.

I understand the circumstance, and think it was probably best to continue the Creed story without Rocky, however, I would have liked a little more explanation as to why the character doesn’t appear, and why he is no longer in Donnie’s corner. In fact, Rocky is only really mentioned in passing as “that guy your dad fought,” and the other ‘Creed’ movies certainly established a close if not father/son relationship between Rocky and Donnie. So, it is weird that there is no character update in ‘Creed III’ regarding Rocky or why he is no longer Donnie’s trainer, and it seems that a simple line of dialogue or two could have fixed that issue.

Who Will Adonis fight in ‘Creed III?’

To be accurate, Adonis begins the film with a rematch against his opponent from ‘Creed II,’ Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu). But it is his old friend Damian “Dame” Anderson (Jonathan Majors) that is Donnie’s main opponent in ‘Creed III,’ both in the ring and out. Anderson is Donnie’s oldest friend, who has just been released from prison, something Donnie blames himself for.

At first, Damian asks Donnie for help training, as he is determined to win the championship, despite his age and lack of experience as a professional boxer. Donnie agrees, but bumps heads with Damian, who clearly has a chip on his shoulder. Donnie eventually helps Damian become champ, but it’s not enough for Dame, and he goes after Donnie and his family personally and publicly in order to convince Donnie to get back into the ring so he can show the world he is the better fighter and have payback for what happened between them in the past.

After fantastic performances in last year’s ‘Devotion’ and ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,’ which hit theaters last week, ‘Creed III’ is poised to cement Jonathan Majors reputation as one of the finest actors working today. Majors gives an absolutely stunning and menacing performance as Damian Anderson, and at times, even out shines Jordan himself. Majors plays Damian as a brooding and calculating character, one who knows just how to push his old friend’s buttons perfectly to get the desired reaction. Damian is a real threat to Donnie, in the ring and out, but their former friendship is what keeps the dynamic fresh and interesting.

Majors is also in top physical shape for this movie, lending to his threat to Donnie, making the idea of Creed winning their fight impossible, which adds to the film’s suspense. In the world of ‘Rocky’ movies, I would put Damian Anderson right up there with Mr. T’s Clubber Lang from ‘Rocky III,’ and of course Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) from ‘Rocky IV,’ as the strongest opponents in this franchise.

    The Rest of the Cast

Besides Majors and Jordan, the strongest performance in the movie comes from Tessa Thompson as Donnie’s wife Bianca Taylor, and the actress has really made this character her own. Even from the first ‘Creed,’ Thompson has taken the role and elevated her from the “sideline support” that Adrian (Talia Shire) gave Rocky in the original. Bianca has always had her own storyline, whether it is concentrating on her music career, or dealing with her progressive degenerative hearing disorder.

In the new film, she is a mother of a deaf child, the wife of a boxing champ, and also a successful music producer. Thompson plays the role of supporting wife well, but is at her best in scenes dealing with her family, the secrets that Donnie has been keeping from her, or her reluctance to except Damian as a friend. Thompson elevates the role, and over three films, has created a fully formed character that you can really relate to.

Phylicia Rashad also returns as Donnie’s adopted mother Mary Anne Creed, the widow of Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). The actress is given a little more to do this time around, as Donnie’s childhood plays into the main story with Damian. Wood Harris also reprises his role from the other ‘Creed’ movies as Tony “Little Duke” Evers Jr., who is Donnie’s trainer and the son of Apollo Creed’s trainer. Harris is fine in the role, but again, it is strange to look in Donnie’s corner and not see Rocky!

    Final Thoughts

In the end, while ‘Creed III’ does exist in the ‘Rocky’ universe, it is completely its own film. This is Adonis “Donnie” Creed’s story, and a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. Star Michael B. Jordan gives another strong performance as the character and also gives an impressive directorial debut, while Jonathan Majors continues to dazzle in another remarkable and transformative performance.

With ‘Creed III’ arriving next month, star (and, on this occasion, director) Michael B. Jordan is being asked about the future of the boxing movies that feature him as Adonis “Donnie” Creed, the son of the late Apollo (Carl Weathers in the ‘Rocky’ movies).

Talking with IGN about ‘Creed III’, Jordan didn’t expand much on his ideas, but did say that he intends to stick with the ‘Creed’ franchise. Answering questions about a potential fourth movie, he said it was “for sure”.

And, as with every popular movie from a studio these days, it appears there will be spin-offs of some fashion. “I just want to expand the ‘Creed’-verse within reason, but definitely expect other things around ‘Creed’ for sure.”

It’s just the latest step for the ever-expanding spin-off from the ‘Rocky’ movies, though the ‘Creed’ films are moving away from Sylvester Stallone’s veteran boxer.

Through 2015’s ‘Creed’ (directed by Ryan Coogler) and 2018’s ‘Creed II’ (with Steven Caple Jr. in the director’s chair), Donnie has battled his demons, fought powerful opponents in the ring and tried to forge a family life with Bianca (Tessa Thompson) and their daughter, who has inherited her mother’s hearing difficulties.

‘Creed III’ moves the story forward a few years but also back several, as the story sees Donnie reconnecting with old friend and prodigy Damian Anderson (Jonathan Majors), who went to prison, and resents that Adonis did not (as he was involved in the incident).

Out of Jail and quietly burning with vengeance, Anderson threatens Donnie – and Adonis decides to face him in the place he knows best – the ring. And without Rocky in his life for this round, this time, the fight is truly personal.

And it’s even more personal for the man in front of the camera – who steps behind it for the first time. Michael B. Jordan, who has played Adonis since the first film, is also here the director.

“I think for me it was the perfect time,” says Jordan.. “I finally got to this place in my career where I wanted to tell a story and not just be in front of the camera, not just execute somebody else’s vision. And having a character that I’ve played twice before, it’s been seven, eight years living with this guy. So to be able to tell a story of where I believe Adonis is at, and also at 35 years old, I had a lot to say as a young man, as a young Black man, just my life experiences and how I could actually share that, share a piece of myself with the world––through these characters and through this story. You just gotta jump in the deep end and go for it, you know?”

‘Creed III’ will be in theaters on March 3rd.

If you’ve watched the moody trailer for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’, you’ll know that the third ‘Guardians’ outing, once again written and directed by James Gunn, promises to be an emotional capper to at least this incarnation of the team.

Though Gunn insists that it’s not some huge cull that will leave everyone permanently off the board (particularly as, thanks to their participation in the ‘Avengers’ movies, they’re important to the fabric of the MCU), it seems like we’ll be saying goodbye to more than one member (and comments by Dave Bautista about leaving Drax behind makes us suspect he could either die heroically or sail off somewhere else in the universe).

And one of the biggest issues that the Guardians––Bautista’s Drax, Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill, Zoe Saldana’s Gamora, Karen Gillan’s Nebula and Pom Klementieff’s Mantis, plus CG characters Rocket Racoon (brought to life by Sean Gunn in performance capture and voiced by Bradley Cooper) and Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel)––will face is Adam Warlock, played by British actor Will Poulter.

Created by gold-hued Sovereign leader Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki) after the Guardians double-crossed her in ‘Vol. 2’, Warlock promises that this prime example of the Sovereign race will destroy our morally changeable heroes. He’s a powerful warrior… But is he entirely a bad guy?

“It’s kind of more complicated than that,” Gunn tells Empire. “But he’s definitely not a good guy. What we’re seeing is the infant form of Warlock, newly out of the cocoon, and he does not understand life very well. He’s basically a baby.”

Will Poulter as Adam Warlock in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.'

After a long search for the right actor to bring him to life, Gunn settled on Poulter, known for films such as the ‘Maze Runner’ movies and, more recently, horror title ‘Midsommar’.

“People online were saying, ‘Oh, Tom Cruise should be Adam Warlock,’” says Gunn. “I wanted somebody who was youthful, and I wanted the person who had the dramatic chops and the comedic chops, not only for this movie but for what Marvel will use Adam Warlock for in the future. He could become this really important character.”

Yes, in true Marvel style, Warlock looks to be hanging around the MCU for a while yet, and he’ll certainly be handy for the future of the Multiverse Saga, which is the overarching title for Phases four, five and six.

For now, though, we’ll have to wait and see how Warlock pans out in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’, which will also feature Chukwudi Iwuji as The High Evolutionary, who promises to be even more of a problem for our heroes.

With Maria Bakalova, Nico Santos, Michael Rosenbaum, Daniela Melchior and the returning likes of Sylvester Stallone and Sean Gunn (in his other, live-action role as Kraglin), ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be in theaters on May 5th.

Overlord’ director Julius Avery’s new original superhero movie ‘Samaritan,’ will premiere on Prime Video beginning August 26th.

The movie stars Oscar-nominee Sylvester Stallone (‘Creed’) as Joe Smith, a local garbage man that keeps to himself. One of his neighbors is a young boy named Sam (Javon Walton), who lives alone with his single mother, Tiffany (Dascha Polanco).

Sam looks up to a superhero named Samaritan, who went missing decades ago after an epic battle with his archrival, Nemesis. Sam soon comes to believe that Joe is really the Samaritan.

When a gangster named Cyrus (Pilou Asbaek) starts threatening Sam, his mother, and the entire city, Sam turns to Joe for help. But is he really the Samaritan? And if so, can he take down Cyrus before it’s too late?

The result is a shockingly strong and compelling original superhero movie that is set in a relatable and realistic universe and explores the complexity of what it means to be a hero.

Since the beginning of this century, superhero movies have ruled the box office going all the way back to ‘X-Men’ and Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man,’ and certainly since the birth of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe. We’ve even seen movies based on comics from smaller publishing companies, like ‘Hellboy’ or ‘Wanted.’

But creating a good original superhero movie is a much taller order. Movies like ‘Hancock’ and ‘Sky High’ have tried with different degrees of success, and even recently we’ve seen Paramount+ attempt it with ‘Secret Headquarters.’ The difficulty comes down to world-building, which is hard to do with only two hours to tell a story. That’s why having decades of stories and characters to pull from can really help.

With ‘Samaritan,’ which is based on a screenplay by Bragi F. Schut, who did have his work published as a graphic novel after the screenplay was already sold, director Julius Avery accomplishes the near impossible by introducing us to a brand new, fully formed world with recognizable three-dimensional characters.

Superstar and legendary actor Sylvester Stallone gives one of his best, late-in-career performances as Joe/Samaritan. The actor perfectly portrays the haunted and ageing superhero who is contemplating his own life and actions. It’s a quitter performance than we are used to from the actor, and on par with his Oscar-nominated work in ‘Creed.’

It’s also worth mentioning that this is not Stallone’s first time playing a superhero on screen. Long before he appeared as Starhawk in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ or voiced King Shark in ‘The Suicide Squad’ (which was technically a supervillain), the actor played the title character in the first big screen adaptation of ‘Judge Dredd.’ A case could also be made that many of Stallone’s characters have taken on a superhero persona like ‘Rocky,’ ‘Rambo,’ or even his role in ‘Demolition Man.’

But while he is the title character and obviously the star of ‘Samaritan,’ in some ways Joe is a supporting character and Stallone’s performance never overshadows the other actors and their performances. Stallone also has great chemistry with Javon Walton, and you can really feel the deepness of their connection as both friends and surrogate father and son.

In his first big screen live-action film, Walton is terrific and really holds his own with Stallone. The young actor is quite compelling as Sam, and you root for him as much as you are rooting for Joe. He also has some tender scenes with Dascha Polanco, who’s character of a single mom caring for her son is again relatable to a general audience.

Actor Pilou Asbaek in some ways gives the breakout performance of the film as the villain, Cyrus. He is absolutely magnetic on screen and truly has a worthy fight scene with Stallone towards the end. But what makes his character so menacing is how convinced he is that he is really the hero of the story, and in some ways, he is. Asbaek crafts a completely believable villain, who almost convinces you he’s right, and is absolutely terrifying in his scenes with Walton.

There are a few twists and turns in the story that I certainly won’t give away, but they were surprising and really worked. Many times, with superhero movies, original or from Marvel or DC, you really can anticipate what is going to happen next. Sometimes it doesn’t matter, and the movie is still fun to watch, but I give a lot of credit to the filmmakers for taking a big swing with this project and for the most part hitting it out of the park.

That being said the film is not without its faults. The story does seem somewhat familiar, even with its surprising moments, and it’s not like we don’t know that the hero will rise in the end. The movie also drags a bit in the middle, but quickly course corrects and delivers a very exciting third act.

It’s also safe to say that the film had a small budget, at least compared to the projects Marvel Studios release, both in theaters and on TV. If that’s the case, I am very impressed with the production value as it looks like a big theatrical film, with spacious sets  and strong use of visual effects.

In the end, ‘Samaritan’ may not be a perfect movie, but it is a surprisingly good one that superhero fans, and Stallone fans in general will really enjoy.

  • Sylvester Stallone Talks New Superhero Movie ‘Samaritan’

    8KWIs4q6

Premiering on Prime Video beginning August 26th is the new original superhero movie ‘Samaritan,’ from director Julius Avery (‘Overlord’).

The movie stars Javon Walton as Sam Cleary, a young boy living with his single mother (Dascha Polanco) trying to survive in a rough neighborhood. Sam looks up to a superhero named Samaritan, who went missing decades ago after an epic battle with his archrival.

When a gangster named Cyrus (Pilou Asbaek) starts threatening Sam and his mother, he turns to a neighbor named Joe Smith (Sylvester Stallone) for help, who Sam believes might be the real Samaritan.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of attending a virtual press conference, along with several other members of the press, to hear what Hollywood legend Sylvester Stallone had to say about his work on ‘Samaritan.’

Javon "Wanna" Walton as Sam Cleary and Sylvester Stallone as Joe Smith in 'Samaritan,' directed by Julius Avery, a Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures film.

You can read the interview below or click on the video player above to watch interviews with Stallone, Javon Walton, Dascha Polanco, and Pilou Asbaek.

Stallone began the press conference by discussing why he wanted to make an original superhero movie. “Well, it’s very reflective of what’s going on” he said. “Quite often, people say, we’re basically good people who can take care of ourselves. Let’s be on the honor system, and quite often it backfires. Then they go, how do we get rid of all this violence and fear?”

“In the movies, it’s always this mythic character,” Stallone continued. “But in the end, I say to the people, you have to take care of yourself, that’s what it’s all about. So, it’s kind of a cautionary tale, that when you get rid of your hero, then maybe you need a hero back, because you’re just not ready to take on the responsibility. But in this particular case, he had an issue that is so personal, that he couldn’t face the facts. That’s why he disappeared.”

The actor also talked about the challenges of creating a new superhero universe. “There has been a tremendous accomplishment by certain directors and certain companies in Marvel and DC, that have really pushed the universe to the max,” Stallone said. “I mean, everything that you could possibly imagine has been created.”

“I always feel there is nothing quite as relatable as almost getting hit by a car, or walking down a dark alley,” he continued. “That’s very relatable. So, we try to make the events and the danger plausible, in a sense, and identifiable. This could happen to you. It’s something that’s very tangible. It’s not from another universe, it’s from right here in the streets.”

Stallone was also asked to talk about the relationship in the film between his character and Sam, played by Javon Walton. “I hate the fact that he’s making me face reality quite often,” Stallone joked. “I think one of the main assets people have is a fading memory. Every day my character tries to forget something new because he doesn’t want to remember. It’s bad times, it’s mistakes, it’s this and that. This kid is dragging me back into my memories, and he’s making me face who I was.”

Having appeared in franchises like ‘Rocky,’ ‘Rambo,’ and ‘The Expendables,’ Stallone is no stranger to physically training for a movie, and the actor talked about how he prepared differently for this role. “I think there is a point where you say okay, you can’t do a 29-year-old ‘Rambo’ thing because you also have to honor who you at your age,” he said. “That’s the part of it that you’re not who you were, but you’re still there.”

“Actually, there’s a line in the movie about how you start to fall apart when you stop caring about everything, meaning life, and yourself.” Stallone explained. “So, I thought that this guy, his trait would be in his resolve. He still has great physical power as opposed to speed and he’s not jumping through the air. He’s not that kind of guy.”

“He’s like a very powerful individual that is still in the world of reality, a little bit,” the actor continued. “He can’t fly, and fire doesn’t come out of his mouth. He’s just a unique superhero. He’s almost a modern-day Hercules. He’s that kind of a mythic hero. I think those are ones that you can identify with. He can die. I mean, if he gets hit enough, he’s gone.”

Finally, Stallone was asked what superhero fans can expect from ‘Samaritan.’ “Because this guy is much more pedestrian, you could be standing next to him on a bus and not even know you’re standing next to some guy that can literally lift the bus up,’ he said. “There’s a kind of simplicity to it, and it’s a simmering boil. It eventually erupts as opposed to triumphant music, special effects and guys hitting the ground with their fists like a seismic wave.”

“So, you can expect a hero that is very regular, and does irregular things,” Stallone continued. “That’s what it is. It’s not like if ‘Rocky’ was a superhero. It’s something that is identifiable and street-like. It’s not set in some super fantastic universe. It’s set among brick and concrete, and identifiable situations about the neighborhoods we live in. This is less breaking news and more “I must break you” news.

Given how successful the two ‘Creed’ movies – which continue the story of the ‘Rocky’ films while focusing on Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan), the son of Apollo Creed, as so memorably played by Carl Weathers in the 1970s and ‘80s – it’s not surprising that studio MGM might be considering spin-offs.

Word arrives today that just such an idea, a movie based around Dolph Lundgren’s Ivan Drago, is moving to the script stage.

Drago, of course, was the hulking Russian antagonist in 1985’s ‘Rocky IV,’ (who kills Apollo Creed, the fiend). Continuing the family theme, his son Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu) was the threat to Adonis in 2018’s ‘Creed II’.

Lundgren himself acted as hype man for a Drago movie back in November last year when talking to The Hollywood Reporter. After admitting his disappointment that a fan-pleasing fight with Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky Balboa hit the cutting room floor from ‘Creed II’, he teased seeing more of Drago: “I think there’s some talk about doing a whole spinoff on Drago with MGM. So you may get more of that.”

According to The Wrap, Robert Lawton is now on board to write the script for the new movie. He reportedly impressed executives with his spec screenplay ‘Becoming Rocky’ which chronicled the behind-the-scenes efforts to make the 1976 original.

And he had an idea for a Drago-centric movie that excited MGM’s team enough to score him the job. No details have emerged about what that story might be, but there is plenty of scope for more of Drago and potentially Viktor’s story to be told.

Now we wait to see whether the bell rings on this one and if a director steps aboard to guide it out of the development dressing room.

There is related, and not so good news about the next iteration of the main ‘Creed’ franchise, though chances are it’s more to give the movie time to be finished.

Star Jordan – who once again leads the cast as Adonis – stepped up to direct this latest movie, but while it was targeting a November 23rd release date until recently, it is now on the move to March 3rd next year.

And that’s not exactly a prime position to be in, since it puts ‘Creed III’ in the ring with Paramount’s big fantasy adventure ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’, which had a warm reception (for its trailer, at least) at last weekend’s Comic-Con.

And this ‘Creed’ will be without possibly its heaviest hitter besides Jordan, as this is the first in the new series not to include Stallone.

Still, ‘Creed III’ still boasts Tessa Thompson reprising her role as Donnie’s girlfriend Bianca and Phylicia Rashad is returning as his stepmother Mary Anne in its corner.
