  • TV Review: ‘The Afterparty’

(L to R) Ben Schwartz and Sam Richardson in 'The Afterparty' on Apple TV+
(L to R) Ben Schwartz and Sam Richardson in ‘The Afterparty’ on Apple TV+

Premiering January 28th on Apple TV+ is the new murder mystery comedy ‘The Afterparty,’ from the creative minds of Christopher Miller and Phil Lord (‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’). The series features an impressive cast of comedic actors including Tiffany Haddish (‘Girls Trip’), Sam Richardson (‘The Tomorrow War’), Ben Schwartz (‘Sonic the Hedgehog’), Zoe Chao (‘The High Note’), Ike Barinholtz (‘Suicide Squad’), Ilana Glazer (‘Rough Night’), and Dave Franco (‘The Disaster Artist’).

The eight-part series revolves around a murder that takes place at a high school reunion after party, and each episode is told from a different character’s perspective. The result is an innovative and hilarious whodunit with a charming cast led by Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson and Ben Schwartz.

The series begins by introducing us to Aniq (Richardson), who is reluctantly attending his high school reunion in hopes of seeing the girl he had a crush on, Zoe (Chao). He first finds his friend Yasper (Schwartz), before eventually reuniting with Zoe. He is delighted to find that she is recently separated from Brett (Barinholtz), who Aniq thinks took her from him when they were in high school. But Aniq’s good time with Zoe is interrupted by the arrival of Xavier (Franco), who was a nerd in high school but is now a famous pop star and actor.

Trouble begins when Xavier invites everyone over to his mansion for an after party, and he is soon murdered by one of his guests. Enter Detective Danner (Haddish), who suspects Aniq of the murder and questions him about the events of the night. Soon, everyone becomes a suspect and while Danner investigates and questions the other guests, Yasper tries to help Aniq clear his name.

After seeing their previous work, including the Oscar winning animated movie ‘Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse,’ it’s no surprise that a new streaming series from Phil Lord and Christopher Miller would be fresh, funny, and completely unique.

A high school reunion is a perfect backdrop for a comedic mystery and the characters are both over-the-top yet very relatable. The choice to center each episode on a particular character’s point of view of the evening’s events was brilliant, as it allows each character to come alive in a different way, and lets the actors play different versions of their characters.

The ensemble cast is excellent, led by Tiffany Haddish as the outsider investigating the murder, Detective Danner. Haddish brings her own brand of humor to the series, while never overshadowing the plot or the other actors. She is especially excellent in the penultimate episode, where her character’s backstory is finally revealed.

Sam Richardson is really the anchor of the series, as Aniq is the main character that we are rooting for to not only clear his name but win back Zoe’s heart as well. Richardson plays the role a bit nerdish, which is where the real comedy comes in. Equally great is Ben Schwartz as Aniq’s friend Yasper, who gets to perform a full-on musical during his character specific episode.

Dave Franco is also hilarious as pop star Xavier, who ends up being the murder victim. The actor plays his character like an arrogant, insecure jerk, who you sympathize with once his backstory is revealed. Franco does some of his best work channeling a Justin Bieber/Machine Gun Kelly type character. Another funny character is Jamie Demetriou’s Walt, who is the guy from high school that no one remembers, which leads to some hilarious moments.

Comedian Ike Barinholtz was perfectly cast as Brett, the high school bully who rivals Aniq for Zoe’s affection. The actor plays the role of a real jerk, but also shows us a bit of his character’s vulnerable side throughout the first season. Ilana Glazer, best known for her Comedy Central series ‘Broad City,’ has some great moments playing the pivotal role of Chelsea, a character that has more going on under the surface than it first appears.

However, if there is a weak link in the cast, unfortunately its Zoe Chao, who plays Zoe. Her character never really rises to the level that you understand why Aniq, and Brett for that matter, care for her so much. Her character’s point-of-view episode helps to explain her different personalities with some really entertaining animation, but it doesn’t come until the sixth episode, which is a little late in the season to finally make the character interesting.

One of the great aspects of ‘The Afterparty,’ which is baked into the Rashomon concept, is that nothing is as it seems. So, truly any character, even Aniq or Detective Danner, could be the murderer! My money is on Yasper, who just seems a little too nice, and a little too eager to help Aniq clear his name. But I also think it’s possible that Xavier is not dead, which could be the season’s big twist.

Full disclosure, critics were only given the first seven episodes to screen, so your guess is as good as mine as to who the true killer is.

In the end, ‘The Afterparty’ is a true joy to watch, and a murder-mystery-comedy on level with classics from the genre like ‘Clue.’ Lord and Miller have assembled a marvelous cast, which is truly a pleasure to watch. The characters are both ridiculous and relatable, and the show’s unique concept makes it a series that you won’t want to miss.

‘The Afterparty’ receives 4 out of 5 stars.

  • ‘Moon Knight’ Trailer Premiere

'Moon Knight' premieres March 30th on Disney+
‘Moon Knight’ premieres March 30th on Disney+

Premiering Monday night during the NFL football game between the Arizona Cardinals and the Los Angeles Rams was the first full trailer for the upcoming Disney+ series ‘Moon Knight,’ which begins March 30th and stars Oscar Isaac (‘Dune’) as the classic Marvel comic book character.

Commonly referred to as the “Batman of the Marvel Universe,” in the comics Moon Knight is a former Marine and CIA operative named Marc Spector, who suffers from dissociative identity disorder, and powered by the Egyptian Moon God Khonshu, becomes the vigilante known as Moon Knight. The character was created by writer Doug Moench and artist Don Perlin, and first appeared in “Werewolf by Night” #32 in 1975.

Created by Jeremy Slater (‘The Umbrella Academy’), the six-episode series will be directed by Mohamed Diab (‘Cairo 678’), as well as Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (‘Synchronic’), and it is set in the MCU.

Oscar Isaac plays Marc Spector and the series will explore his different personalities, including Steven Grant and Jake Lockley, while the character “is drawn into a deadly war of gods with his multiple identities.” Ethan Hawke (‘The Magnificent Seven’) has signed on to play the show’s villain.

The trailer beings with Oscar Isaac suddenly waking up and finding himself chained to a bed. We discover that this is his Steven Grant persona and that he is seeing visions of things that are not there. “I think I’m losing it,” says the character in a voice over. “I can’t tell the difference between life and dreams.”

We then see him walking through an Egyptian exhibit at a museum and finding a ringing cell phone. A female voice says, “Oh my God! You’re still alive? What’s wrong with you, Marc?” Isaac’s character then says, “Why did you call me Marc?”

We are then introduced to Ethan Hawke’s character, who seems to be a cult leader. He says to Spector, “It must be very difficult the voices in your head. There is chaos in you.” We then see a series of action sequences including Spector holding a gun, driving a truck, running, falling off a cliff, in an asylum, and in Egypt. Then an unidentified voice says, “Embrace the chaos.”

We then see Spector forming into Moon Knight with his full white, comic book accurate costume. He violently beats up a bad guy, before turning directly to the camera and walk out of view with glowing white eyes. After the title card, we get one last shot of Moon Knight, in costume, jumping from one rooftop to another with the crescent moon behind him.

Marvel Studios also released the official poster for the series, which you can see in full below. ‘Moon Knight’ premieres on Disney+ beginning March 30th.

WarnerMedia’s upcoming streaming service, HBO Max, has landed another beloved series.

“Doctor Who” is slated to stream on the platform when HBO Max launches in spring 2020, Variety reports. The streamer has locked down exclusive U.S. streaming rights to past seasons as well as future ones. Upcoming seasons will hit HBO Max after airing on BBC America.

The platform already has a number of big draws that will be available to watch when it’s officially up and running. For example, “Friends” is leaving Netflix and crossing over to HBO Max. There will also be past hit HBO series like “Game of Thrones” and “The Sopranos” alongside originals. Furthermore, the new deal with BBC Studios includes the British version of “The Office,” “Top Gear,” and “Luther,” among others, in addition to “Doctor Who.”

Kevin Reilly, HBO Max content chief and president of TNT, TBS, and truTV, expressed excitement about the deal in a statement Thursday. He referred to “Doctor Who” as “one of television’s all-time, most beloved series, on both sides of the pond.” Reilly added that it’s “another series to further define the high-quality content experience consumers can expect from HBO Max.”

We look forward to testing out that high-quality content experience in spring 2020. The monthly cost hasn’t been announced yet, but sources previously told the Wall Street Journal that subscribers would likely pay $16 to $17 per month.

  • NBCUniversal to Launch Streaming Service in April 2020

    NBC

The rollout of new streaming services continues.

NBCUniversal has revealed that it plans to launch its forthcoming streaming service in April 2020, Variety reports. The ad-supported platform will be modeled after the European service Now TV, which comes from NBCUniversal’s sister company Sky UK. It will feature “a gigantic library of all favorites,” according to NBCUniversal in the past, and it will notably become the exclusive home of “The Office,” a perennial favorite, in 2021.

The streamer will debut original content as well, and NBCUniversal is investing in it, according to CEO Steve Burke. He shared that the company is focusing on developing originals that are linked to their existing properties. That’s similar to both WarnerMedia and Disney, for example, as both have ordered multiple series with familiar stories and characters. Everything old is new again, after all.

Burke didn’t reveal too many specifics about the streamer because of “competitive reasons,” as Deadline reports, but he did say that there are more than 500 employees working on the project. We look forward to seeing the fruits of their labors in April.

  • ‘Seinfeld’ Gets New ‘Yada Yada Yada’ Shuffle Feature on Hulu

‘Seinfeld’ Gets New ‘Yada Yada Yada’ Shuffle Feature on Hulu

Hulu has a surprise for “Seinfeld” fans in honor of the show’s 30th anniversary: the “Yada Yada Yada (Shuffle)” option. The streaming service added a feature that allows viewers to watch episodes on shuffle, THR reports. It’s available to users who are viewing the sitcom via the Hulu app on Apple TV devices.

The so-called “Yada Yada Yada” button comes as we approach the 30th anniversary of the show’s July 5 premiere, and Hulu is planning other surprises, too. The streamer will offer a “beginner’s guide” so that people can bone up on the iconic comedy series. Additionally, there will be collections of episodes grouped together by themes such as food, breakups, and crimes, per THR.

It’s a great celebration for the beloved “show about nothing.” “Seinfeld” ran from 1989 to 1998 and is still considered one of the greatest sitcoms ever made. It’s not surprising that the show’s 30th anniversary would be a big deal.

The “Seinfeld” Twitter account has also gotten in on the action and has been celebrating with memes and posters that play off of jokes and storylines from the show.

With the “Yada Yada Yada” button and all the other “Seinfeld” fun going on right now, it feels like Festivus come early.

  • New CW Shows Won’t Automatically Stream on Netflix as Deal Ends

New CW Shows Won’t Automatically Stream on Netflix as Deal Ends

The relationship between The CW and Netflix is changing.

Since 2011, a deal has automatically brought all CW shows from to Netflix shortly after their seasons end, but that will reportedly no longer be the case. The agreement, which was extended in 2016, has now not been renewed, according to Deadline. That means new shows will be shopped around to various streamers and Netflix will have to bid for those it wants.

Fans of the current CW shows on Netflix such as “Riverdale,” “The Flash,” and “Dynasty” won’t see any changes; past and future seasons will continue to stream on Netflix. It’s new shows like “Katy Keene,” “Nancy Drew,” and “Batwoman” that could land elsewhere. WarnerMedia and CBS own The CW, as THR notes, so their streaming services may choose to nab the rights to the shows they produce. “Batwoman,” for example, is expected to end up on WarnerMedia’s upcoming service as it’s part of the Warner Bros. TV-owned DC Arrowverse, per Deadline.

A lot is changing in streaming right now, and as more streamers launch, there will be increased competition. Companies including Disney, WarnerMedia, and NBCUniversal are all set to launch their own streaming services in 2019 and 2020, while CBS, HBO, and others have already done so. Additionally, Hulu is now fully controlled by Disney. Somehow, we doubt the end of the deal between The CW and Netflix is the last shakeup we’ll see.

  • NBCUniversal Says Its Most Popular Shows Are ‘Coming Home’ to New Streaming Service

NBCUniversal Says Its Most Popular Shows Are ‘Coming Home’ to New Streaming Service

    The Office
    NBC

Speculation continues over where popular TV shows like “The Office” will stream as new services emerge.

NBCUniversal discussed its upcoming streamer during an event in New York on Monday, and the company’s  chairman of advertising and client partnerships, Linda Yaccarino, shared some interesting information. She told the audience that when the ad-supported platform launches in 2020, “the shows that people love the most and stream the most are coming home,” per Deadline. But before anyone becomes too alarmed, she noted that the service will be free given that it’s paid for by ads.

The company is planning to have “a gigantic library of all favorites,” and “The Office” seems like a great candidate. The show is the current most-watched show on Netflix, as the Wall Street Journal reported, so it could be a big draw at some point after NBCUniversal launches its streaming service. In fact, WSJ noted that Yaccarino talked about various NBC characters, including Jim and Pam of “The Office.” Netflix does, however, have a deal for exclusive streaming rights until 2021.

The streaming landscape continues to evolve. WarnerMedia is also launching its own service, and there’s talk that “Friends” — another favorite on Netflix — will move to it. We may have to get used to some changes (like commercials), but at least these beloved shows will still be available to watch somewhere.

  • Disney+ Streaming Service Launch Date and Pricing Revealed

Disney+ Streaming Service Launch Date and Pricing Revealed

    Disney Plus logo
    Disney

The Mouse House has been working hard on plans for its new streaming service Disney+, and now we finally know when we can expect it to debut. Disney announced the launch date and pricing information on Thursday.

Disney+ will debut on Nov. 12, as Deadline reports. Subscribers will have the option of paying $6.99 per month or signing up for a full year for $69.99. The latter price breaks down to slightly less than $5.83 per month. The service will be free of ads, per CNN.

The price is lower compared to the rates of competitor Netflix, which costs $8.99 per month for the basic plan. The cheapest Hulu plan is comparable at $5.99 per month. However, Disney has a majority stake in Hulu, and Kevin Mayer, chairman of the company’s direct-to-consumer unit, said Thursday that it is “likely” to offer a bundle with Hulu and/or ESPN+.

The streamer’s catalog will include a lot of old favorites such as “The Simpsons,” and new shows are in the works, too. Projects as varied as a “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” prequel series and a “Monsters, Inc.” sequel series are reportedly in the works. Color us very intrigued.

Director Luca Guadagnino (“Call Me By Your Name“) goes from peaches and young love to the horrors surrounding a prestigious Berlin dance company. Dakota Johnson plays an aspiring dancer who enrolls, only to discover the company is run by a coven of witches. The movie is remake of a 1977 cult classic, but Tilda Swinton’s unbelievable performance in multiple roles makes this version completely unique.

The movie arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on January 29 (and is already available on Digital HD). Bonus features include three making-of featurettes.

‘The Nutcracker and the Four Realms’ (January 29)

This new take on the classic story takes a turn into the fantastical, following a young girl who journeys to a magical land to retrieve a key that will unlock an egg gifted by her dead mother. Music from Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker Suite” is incorporated and ballerina Misty Copeland makes a cameo.

    ‘Boy Erased’ (January 29)

The movie arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on January 29 (and is already available on Digital HD). Bonus features include Q&As with Close and the cast.

‘In the Heat of the Night’: The classic drama starring Sidney Poitier that tackles race and police relations is always timely, but even more so in today’s political climate. The Blu-ray reissue has a new 4K digital restoration and new interviews with cast and crew.

‘Screamers’: The 1995 sci-fi action thriller gets its first Blu-ray release, which includes new interviews with cast and crew.

NEW VIDEO ON DIGITAL, DEMAND, AND STREAMING

    ‘At Eternity’s Gate’ (January 29)

Willem Dafoe earned an Oscar nomination for portraying the brilliant, troubled artist Vincent Van Gogh. Director Julian Schnabel’s movie is not a meticulous biopic, but rather a collection of scenes drawn from the Van Gogh’s letters, rumors and heresay, and even just plain invented stories. Available on Digital HD.

    NEW ON NETFLIX

    ‘Velvet Buzzsaw’ (February 1)

This satirical thriller from writer/director Dan Gilroy reunites him with his “Nightcrawler” stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo. As the Netflix original movie’s trailer notes, “Something truly goddamn strange is going on” in L.A.’s contemporary art world. A collection of pieces created by a dead artist seem to have malevolent supernatural powers, targeted at collectors who are trying to profit off of them.

    ‘Jaws’ and Sequels (February 1)

Now, Steven Spielberg’s seminal shark thriller can scare the daylights out of you from the comfort of your couch. Follow it up (if you dare) with “Jaws 2” and “Jaws 3.”

  • Hulu Adjusts Prices: Live TV Increases, Ad-Supported Plan Goes Down

Hulu Adjusts Prices: Live TV Increases, Ad-Supported Plan Goes Down

    Hulu

Hulu is getting more expensive for some people and cheaper for others. The streaming service is adjusting its rates, just a week after Netflix raised its prices.

Starting next month, Hulu With Live TV will increase by $5 per month, rising from $39.99 to $44.99 per month (a 12.5 percent increase). Meanwhile, the ad-supported video-on-demand service will now cost $5.99, a $2 decrease.

(The ad-free VOD plan will remain unchanged, at $11.99 per month.)

The new pricing will go into effect beginning Feb. 26 for new subscribers. For existing subscribers, the changes will be reflected in their next billing cycle after Feb. 26.

Hulu is dropping the rate on its cheapest plan just as Netflix is rolling out its biggest subscription hike yet. By enticing new customers with the price decrease, Hulu is hoping to grow the audience for its ad-supported business. The company claimed ad revenue jumped more than 45 percent in 2018, to nearly $1.5 billion.

As for its Live TV package, Hulu is seeking to make it more profitable after adding nearly a dozen channels in 2018.. It now includes more than 60 channels, including local broadcast channels for ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox.
