    • The first look at Netflix’s crime novel adaptation ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ has landed.
    • Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren and Ben Kingsley lead the cast.
    • The movie hits Netflix on 28th August.

We’ve known for around a year now that Netflix and Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the popular ‘Thursday Murder Club’ series by TV host/producer-turned-author Richard Osman is on the way, ever since the film announced casting with Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie landing the lead roles.

    s9q2deZnwTHZAtRmWmG6c5

That’s quite a murderer’s row of casting –– pun entirely intended, since the book and resulting film will fall cleanly into the cozy murder mystery genre that the UK does so well –– and cements the latest big move for Osman, whose novel series has been a massive bestseller.

With Chris Columbus calling the shots, we now have the first look at the movie, and particularly the leads in the middle of their latest case. And if this one is a success, we can surely expect more.

Other books in the series include ‘The Man Who Died Twice,’ ‘The Bullet That Missed,’ and ‘The Last Devil to Die,’ as well as the newest installment ‘The Impossible Fortune,’ which is released later this year.

Here’s Osman’s statement on his inspiration for the stories –– spending time at his own mother’s retirement home:

“You just sit and chat with these people and they’ve lived these extraordinary lives. You hear these amazing stories and gossip and wisdom. You think, ‘These people are so overlooked.’ The idea that these people with their wisdom and their invisibility would be the perfect people to solve a crime is exactly where ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ comes from. Take these people who are underestimated but who have these incredible skills, put them together, and they can achieve anything.”

What’s the story of ‘The Thursday Murder Club’?

Osman’s book, the first in a series follows four irrepressible retirees –– Elizabeth (Mirren), Ron (Brosnan), Ibrahim (Kingsley) and Joyce (Imrie) –– who spend their time solving cold case murders for fun.

When an unexplained death occurs on their own doorstep, their casual sleuthing takes a thrilling turn as they find themselves with a real whodunit on their hands.

And this is no ordinary group of retirees –– they all bring a particular set of skills to the table. Mirren’s Elizabeth is a former spy, Kingsley’s Ibrahim worked as a psychiatrist, Brosnan’s Ron spend his days as a union activist and Imrie’s Joyce was a nurse.

Here’s what Columbus said about that main cast:

“This is the finest cast I’ve worked with since ‘Potter.’ They’re just so incredibly well-prepared, and it’s because they do everything. They do theater, they do television, they do film, and they’ve developed those sorts of muscles.”

Who is making ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ movie?

Osman sold the rights to Spielberg’s Amblin company in 2020, shortly after the first book became a hit, and development quietly proceeded along.

So, who did the company chose to adapt a popular series of novels set in the UK it hopes will spawn a successful franchise (and has form working with Spielberg)? That would be Columbus, who helped kick off the gigantic ‘Harry Potter’ film series!

With Osman aboard as an executive producer, production happened last year and the first trailer should be on the way before we know it.

And though the concept might seem more niche than the adventures of a boy wizard, the casting will certainly help push the idea here and beyond.

While it originally looked like Columbus would pull double duty and also write the script, the adaptation instead come courtesy of actor and ‘Good Luck to You, Leo Grande’ writer Katy Brand and Suzanne Heathcote, whose credits include ‘Fear the Walking Dead,’ Apple TV+ series ‘The Crowded Room’ and a season of ‘Killing Eve.’

Who else is appearing in ‘The Thursday Murder Club’?

Beyond that starry main cast, we also have the likes of Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Tom Ellis, Jonathan Pryce, David Tennant, Paul Freeman, Geoff Bell, Richard E. Grant and Ingrid Oliver.

And we have a few character details for some of those…

Ackie is Donna De Freitas, a local police officer and good friend to the Club’s members.

Jonathan Pryce plays Stephen, husband to Mirren’s Elizabeth.

Tom Ellis will be as Jason Ritchie, Ron’s (Brosnan) son and a retired boxer.

Sarah Niles has the role of Patrice De Freitas, Donna’s mother.

Ingrid Oliver will be Joanna Meadowcroft, Joyce’s (Imrie) daughter.

When will ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ be on Netflix.

Along with the first look photos, Netflix has announced that the movie will head to its servers on August 28th.

    • Wyatt Russell has been added to Steven Spielberg’s new movie.
    • The ‘Jurassic Park’ director’s new film is a secretive event-level project.
    • David Koepp wrote the script.

Not to be outdone by the likes of Christopher Nolan and J.J. Abrams, who both seem to be recruiting whole swathes of Hollywood and beyond for their respective next planned movies, Steven Spielberg has another name on the list for his latest project.

The powerhouse director and producer, still seen as one of the most famous and successful filmmakers in the world, has a mysterious new movie in the works, and Wyatt Russell is the latest to join the swelling thespian ranks.

What’s the story of Steven Spielberg’s new film?

Director Steven Spielberg on the set of 'The Post'. Photo: 20th Century Fox.
Director Steven Spielberg on the set of ‘The Post’. Photo: 20th Century Fox.

That’s the one thing that has really been kept quiet about the director’s latest project. While it has been talked about as an “event movie” –– as opposed to his last two movies, ‘The Fabelmans’ and ‘West Side Story’, which verged more towards awards season prestige than summer blockbuster territory, this one will be squarely more in the wheelhouse of movies such as the ‘Indiana Jones’ movies and ‘Jurassic Park.’

Or perhaps we should say ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ or ‘War of the Worlds’ as the new film is reportedly once more focused on alien (or at least UFO) interaction. Nothing on that front has been confirmed, though, and Spielberg has the clout to keep it that way for now.

Still, ‘Jurassic Park’ is also a touchstone, since writer David Koepp, who wrote the first two outings of the dino-franchise (and recently returned to pen ‘Jurassic World Rebirth,’ which director Gareth Edwards shot), crafted the script for the new movie based on an idea from Spielberg.

The director is also producing the film via his Amblin company.

Who else is in Spielberg’s new movie?

Samuel L. Jackson at the red carpet premiere of Marvel Studios' 'Secret Invasion.'
Samuel L. Jackson at the red carpet premiere of Marvel Studios’ ‘Secret Invasion.’

As with Nolan’s latest film, Steven Spielberg is the sort of director who can lock down pretty much any talent that he requires, short of them being unavailable.

Jackson is just the newest person mentioned; the film already features the likes of Eve Hewson, Emily Blunt, Colman Domingo and Colin Firth.

Most recently, Samuel L. Jackson –– who appeared in ‘Jurassic Park’ –– signed on to reunite with the director.

In the spirit of the rest of the movie, we don’t know what roles that ensemble will be taking, as the only concrete information appears to be a plan to shoot next spring in the tax break-friendly state of Georgia.

This is what Blunt had to say about meeting the director and landing the role:

“We start in February, and that’s all I can tell you. I was so awestruck to even get the call. And then in the meeting, he goes, ‘Would you like to know why you’re here?’ And I was like, ‘Yes please.’ I was trying not to dork out and just talk to him about endless scenes from ‘Jaws’ that I’ve been obsessed with for years. He’s really magical. I’m very happy.”

What else is Steven Spielberg developing?

(L to R) Gabriel LaBelle and co-writer/producer/director Steven Spielberg on the set of 'The Fabelmans.'
(L to R) Gabriel LaBelle and co-writer/producer/director Steven Spielberg on the set of ‘The Fabelmans.’

Honestly, at this point, it’s easier to list projects that the prolific Spielberg isn’t involved with.

As producer alone, there is the next ‘Jurassic World’ movie (‘Rebirth’) headed our way next year, alongside a film about the wife of William Shakespeare called ‘Hamnet’ that stars Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley and is directed by ‘EternalsChloé Zhao.

There are also the many projects on his sprawling to-do list as a director, including a new ‘Tintin’ movie, a film continuing the story of the character from ‘Bullitt,’ and one about Ulysses S. Grant.

And recent rumors have seen the director linked to an adaptation of author John Scalzi’s ‘Old Man’s War’ books, though Scalzi has warned not to get too excited about that news for now.

Where else have I seen Wyatt Russell?

Wyatt Russell in 'Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,' coming soon to Apple TV+.
Wyatt Russell in ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,’ coming soon to Apple TV+.

Russell, the son of Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn, has been in movies including ‘Cowboys & Aliens,’ ‘22 Jump Street,’ ‘Everybody Wants Some!!’ ‘Overlord’ and ‘Night Swim.’

On the small screen, his roles include ‘Under the Banner of Heaven,’ ‘Lodge 49’ and ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ (in which he plays the younger version of Lee Shaw, with his dad as the elder take).

    KhCJbiUfRB2FfElVhqYBk3

Most notably, Russell –– who lost out on playing Captain America to Chris Evans –– scored the role of John Walker/US Agent (a government-sanctioned replacement for Cap) in MCU TV series ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.’ He’ll be reprising the role for new movie ‘Thunderbolts*,’ which also features Sebastian Stan and Florence Pugh.

That Marvel movie is due on May 2nd next year.

Universal and Amblin Entertainment have handed the movie a May 15th, 2026, release date, setting it squarely in the summer blockbuster territory that Spielberg himself helped establish way back in the 1970s with the likes of ‘Jaws.’

It means Spielberg will be filling one of that year’s summer slots alongside Nolan’s new project (headed our way on July 17th) and –– assuming he sets a release date –– Abrams.

The clash between Pepsi and Coke might be even more compelling and now Sony, which won the rights to just such as movie, is putting together quite the team to shepherd it to screens.

‘Cola Wars’ will chart the true story of Pepsi’s attempt to challenge Coca-Cola’s century-long reign as the world’s top cola, sparking the unforgettable “Cola Wars” of the mid-1980s. This behind-the-scenes account, from Michael Jackson’s fiery mishap to the New Coke debacle, tells the ultimate underdog tale of history’s most iconic second-place contender vying for the No. 1 spot.

There is no word on what angle the film will focus on –– whether it’ll follow personalities on both sides and how much of the juicer real-life drama will be included. With Apatow at the helm, we can imagine a comedic take, perhaps something along the lines of regular collaborator Adam McKay’s ‘The Big Short.’

While ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ in 2022 seemed to signal the end for the franchise that was spawned way back in 1993 with ‘Jurassic Park,’ turns out it was less of an extinction-level event and more of a brief pause between eras.

Because, far from letting a cash dinosaur just wither into nothingness, Universal began making plans for another movie featuring giant beasties and the humans who want to help, hunt or otherwise avoid being snack food last year.

What is now officially titled ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ has come together quickly, and now with shooting still in progress, we have the first look at some of the human characters including those played by Scarlett Johansson, ‘Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali.

They were labelled ‘The F*****g New Guys’ by their predecessors. Ride was the first woman and the first member of the LGBTQ+ community to fly into space. Also in that program were the first Black and Asian American astronauts, and a married couple. They passed all the rigorous tests to become top of the class, and egos, ambition and romance were part of the cultural clash.

In 1983, Ride became the third woman, and first American woman, to fly into space on the shuttle Challenger, heading into orbit twice. She became an instant celebrity.

That joy was short-lived, however, when the space shuttle Challenger blew apart 73 seconds into its ascent on another mission without Ride, killing all seven members of the crew in 1986. Ride then became the only astronaut to become part of the Rogers Commission, a presidential commission to investigate the disaster, and it later came out that she pinpointed the problems with O-rings that became stiff at low temperature, and that turned out to be the reason for the explosion. Ride died from cancer at age 61 in 2012.

This is a passion project for Kyra Sedgwick, who has been developing it via her Big Swing Productions for years.

Here’s what Sedgwick told Deadline about the series.

“This is something we’ve worked on at Big Swing since 2017, me, Meredith and Valerie, about this new class of astronaut recruited by NASA in the early 1970s. Sally Ride was among them, and the focus is this newly recruited wild, feral group of astronauts who were all very diverse. And then on an ‘Oppenheimer’ track, it also tells the story of the Rogers Commission that investigated the Challenger disaster that Ride took part in. Growing up in Florida, Meredith Bagby was obsessed with space and the shuttle, and she also watched the Challenger explode. Meredith got hundreds of hours of interviews with the members of that class, and we have relationships with all those living astronauts and they will be part of our brain trust on the show.”

It was Sedgwick who opted to bring in Steven Spielberg to help produce the show via his Amblin company.

“We thought, what better than to bring in Steven Spielberg to help tell this awe-inspiring story of the astronauts who inspired space travel for a new generation? Amblin helped us prepare the pitch that went out to the marketplace, and it has been extremely competitive, and we are close to a deal.”

When will ‘The Challenger’ be on screens?

While there are no other cast or creatives attached yet, the plan is apparently to have this one on screens by 2026, the 30th anniversary of the Challenger tragedy.

    • Mahershala Ali is the latest actor in talks for the next ‘Jurassic World’ movie.
    • Scarlett Johansson and ‘Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey are among those starring.
    • Gareth Edwards is directing with an eye on a 2025 release date.

It might seem right now that every casting news story is either about Rian Johnson’s newKnives Out’ movie or the latest ‘Jurassic World’ entry. And you wouldn’t be entirely wrong to think that.

Currently it’s the turn of the ‘Jurassic’ franchise, which is nearing a June shoot and has already scooped up Scarlett Johansson, ‘Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey, ‘Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Rupert Friend and ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’s Manuel Garcia-Rulfo into its mighty casting maw.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter has heard that ‘Green Book’ Oscar winner Mahershala Ali is making a deal to join them.

Perhaps the biggest question on our minds is what this means for Marvel’s ‘Blade’, to which Ali has been attached to star for a couple of years now, but given all the delays on the vampire story, we figure he’s filling time while he waits for it to be ready.

And what better way to wait than hanging out with some dinosaurs?

What’s the story of the new ‘Jurassic World’ movie?

Universal is mostly keeping the details of the new movie trapped behind electric fences and concrete barriers for now. What can we predict? Big-toothed beasts causing trouble for the humans that foolishly interact with them.

A bigger question, though, is which humans… It’ll reportedly be set in the ‘Jurassic World’ era, but won’t directly connect to the previous three movies, so an appearance from characters such as those films’ Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) or Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howards) appears unlikely for now –– though we won’t rule anything out at this point.

From the sounds of it, this new movie would take the franchise in a fresh new direction, so we’re also not predicting (for now) the return of ‘Jurassic Park’ trio Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and Jeff Goldblum’s chaotician Malcolm.

Ali might be in talks, but certainly seems to be close to locked in. Unlike Dev Patel and Colman Domingo, who have both appeared on rumor sites connected with the movie. Domingo was mentioned as the potential human antagonist of the new ‘Jurassic’ outing, but we could certainly see Ali taking that role.

With production now so close, we’ll have to wait and see if either of them actually materializes as cast members.

Gareth Edwards, who last made ‘The Creator’, was picked to direct after ‘The Fall Guy’s David Leitch was briefly in talks only to step away over a perceived lack of creative control and the fast turnaround planned for this one (see the release date details below).

David Koepp, who wrote both the 1993 classic ‘Jurassic Park’ (directed by Steven Spielberg) and its 1997 sequel, ‘The Lost World: Jurassic Park’ (also directed by Spielberg, to less critical praise, but still healthy box office), crafted the new movie’s screenplay.

Longtime producer Frank Marshall, who worked on all three of the ‘Jurassic World’ movies is on board this one also, and the studio seems bullish about the progress so far. And of course, Spielberg will weigh in since he helped birth the franchise.

When will the new ‘Jurassic World’ movie be in theaters?

Universal has already set a July 2nd, 2025, release slot for the new movie, which means it’ll have to show velociraptor speed to get finished in time.

    • Chris Hemsworth is in talks for Paramount’s Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover.
    • The storyline is unknown for now.
    • The concept was set up at the end of last year’s ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’.

Its own future might still be up in the air as corporate suitors continue to circle, but Paramount is pressing on with exploring its big characters and concepts.

And, following a tease at the end of last year’s ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’, the studio now officially has a ‘Transformers’/‘G.I. Joe’ crossover in the works.

According to Deadline, the company has a star circling a lead role, as Chris Hemsworth is in talks to join the film. The actor is already involved with at least one side of this duo, since he’s the voice of Orion Pax –– the robot who will become Optimus Prime –– in this year’s animated ‘Transformers One’.

Right now, Paramount has not released any plot details about how the two universes will connect. There is precedent in comic books and, as mentioned, the end of last year’s ‘Transformers’ outing dropped a big hint, as Anthony Ramos’ Noah Diaz, having helped the Autobots and Maximals save the Earth, is introduced to a mysterious man named Agent Burke, played by Michael Kelly, who gives him a business card bearing the Joes’ logo.

Here’s what ‘Transformers’ regular producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura told Variety about the plans:

“Noah goes from somebody who cannot get a job, to a guy who gets the greatest job ever. It really felt organic to put it in here because you could relate it to the story. It didn’t feel like we were being cynical and like, ‘Good news, we could just jam G.I. Joes in here.’ The fans want a lot of things; if we do it and we don’t figure it out well, they’re going to be disappointed. It took us a while to figure out the Maximals, and now we have the hint of how to begin the Joes story.”

For now, Hemsworth’s role is unknown. Nor do we know whether anyone from the previous ‘G.I. Joe’ movies will carry over to this one or whether this will mark a chance to reset the storyline.

While Steven Caple Jr. directed ‘Rise of the Beasts’ (and was one of the driving forces behind introducing the Joes to the onscreen ‘Transformers’ universe), no mention is made in the story about Hemsworth’s casting about who will direct or write the new movie.

All we know at this point is that di Bonaventura is back to produce alongside Mark Vahradian, Michael Bay, Tom DeSanto and Don Murphy. Steven Spielberg and Hasbro Entertainment will be executive producers.

But he’s going to need more than a firm grasp on the principles of prima facia to tackle his next challenge: he’s now joining Scarlett Johansson and ‘Bridgerton’ veteran Jonathan Bailey in the next ‘Jurassic World’ movie.

If we’re honest, a fast Lincoln might be more help against hungry dinosaurs. Beyond his casting though, Deadline had no details on his role.
