Based on the film ‘L’Emploi Du Temps’ by Laurent Cantet and Robin Campillo, the pic follows Vincent (Sandler), who after being fired from his job can’t bring himself to tell his wife and family.

Rather than reveal the truth, he spins a web of lies to conceal his situation. He escalates his lies further when he creates an investment scheme and asks friends to contribute, and the deception threatens to overwhelm his life and his family.

    ‘Time Out’: the director talks

Here’s Cooper on why he decided to tackle the remake:

“I first encountered Laurent Cantet’s film in 2001, and it’s lived with me ever since. I’ve been thinking about revisiting it for years, but now felt like the right moment — we’re living in a time where questions of identity, work, and self-worth have become impossible to ignore.”

No one will ever mistake the original ‘Anaconda’ for a good movie, and even the 1997 film itself doesn’t pretend to be one. With its random cast (Jennifer Lopez! Ice Cube! Jon Voight!), intentional silliness, and wacky premise, the movie leans into its own absurdity and ends up becoming one of those cult classics that fans adore for its ridiculousness (it was also a decent box office hit and spawned a raft of even worse sequels).

Fortunately, the filmmakers behind the new ‘Anaconda’ understand the assignment: the movie, directed by Tom Gormican (‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’), can only be described as a meta-reboot, in which the film both makes (loving) fun of its subject and becomes part of the pantheon itself. With comic sure things Paul Rudd and Jack Black leading the cast, the new ‘Anaconda’ is full of laughs for the first two-thirds of its running time – until it runs out of gas – and is actually even a sweet-natured homage to friendship and the love of making movies.

Ronald ‘Griff’ Griffen Jr. (Paul Rudd) is a struggling actor (his claim to fame is a few episodes of ‘S.W.A.T.’) who returns home from Hollywood to Buffalo, New York for the surprise birthday party of his friend Doug McCallister (Jack Black). Doug writes screenplays at night but shoots wedding videos by day (although his idea to turn one into a horror movie is shot down by the less-than-enthusiastic couple), and is worried about being stuck in the job forever – until Griff comes to the rescue.

At lunch with Doug and two of their other old friends – recent divorcee Claire (Thandiwe Newton) and Doug’s sometimes assistant, the dissolute Kenny (Steve Zahn) – Griff announces that he’s gotten hold of the rights to the original ‘Anaconda,’ their favorite movie as youths, and proposes that the four of them head to Brazil and ‘reboot the thing indie style.’ With the loving support of his wife (Ione Skye), Doug agrees to direct, while Griff and Claire will star and Kenny will co-produce (or something like that).

With a budget of $35,000 (their initial $2 million figure got shot down by a local bank), the foursome head to the Amazon, where they rent both a boat and an anaconda, along with his slightly obsessive owner and trainer (Selton Mello). At first the shoot seems to go swimmingly, but then they learn that the presumed captain of the boat (Daniela Melchior) is not who she appears to be, that Griff hasn’t been entirely honest with them – and that there is a real giant anaconda in hot pursuit of them.

The plot – director Tom Gormican co-wrote the screenplay with Kevin Etten – is little more than nonsense, but it’s fun nonsense and the laughs come steadily for much of the film’s first hour or so. It’s an excuse for (mainly) Rudd and Black to riff on the original movie, and the meta factor gets even more byzantine when they learn that there are real bad guys on the river behind them and a real monster snake lurking in the depths as well: Doug writes it into the script, prompting an awestruck Griff to proclaim, ‘You could be the white Jordan Peele.’

It’s only when ‘Anaconda’ turns into a semi-real action movie in its final third – with chases and explosions and lots more of the CG title beastie, which is almost an afterthought for the film’s first hour – that the movie’s charm and goofy energy begin to flag. Well, truth be told, it kind of starts to wane halfway through, but there are enough jokes to carry it along until the more conventional pyrotechnics of the third act take over, along with a not-unexpected but still rather awkward cameo.

Paul Rudd and Jack Black. Need we say more? Both actors are well within their comfort zone here. Rudd does his ‘middle-aged man struggling to find his way’ routine effortlessly, while Black does his ‘insane middle-aged man struggling to find his way’ act equally well. There is a lot of charm and chemistry between the two of them, and even though Thandiwe Newton and Steve Zahn are underwritten (especially the former), the quartet do manage to generate some of the joy of old friends having fun together and making a movie – that old ‘let’s put on a show’ vibe still comes through.

Brazilian actor Selton Mello has a few chances to steal the show with his not-quite-all-there anaconda trainer, but even he doesn’t quite pull it off, he manages to imbue the character of Santiago with some genuine empathy – even if his relationship with his snake seems a tad unnatural.

All we can add about ‘Anaconda’ is that we went into the movie with low expectations (or, really, no expectations) and ended up having a good time. While there have been a handful of excellent comedies released in 2025, those films – like ‘Splitsville’ or ‘Friendship’ – have focused on the toxic side of relationships, whether between lovers or friends.

The relationships in ‘Anaconda’ are not particularly toxic, and the friends are rather quick to forgive each other. Of course, none of the actions they take are remotely believable or smart – especially when the anaconda is chasing them – but that’s part of their appeal too. We laughed a lot at ‘Anaconda,’ and the movie embraces its source material and its own identity with the right attitude.

‘Anaconda’ receives a score of 75 out of 100.

Moviefone: To begin with, what would you both say to movie goers sitting down right now in a theater to prepare them for the theatrical experience they are about to have?

Jack Black: Now, I got to prepare you with a warning. If you are susceptible to jump scares, if you are terrified easily, if you have a heart condition, don’t see this movie, because it is legit scary. If you have an aversion to laughter, if something makes you laugh too hard and you might pass out, do not go to this movie. It is huge laughs and huge scares. You have been warned.

MF: Paul, what was your first reaction to the screenplay and this meta-approach to rebooting the franchise?

Paul Rudd: So, my reaction was just giddiness. I loved it. I thought it was funny and original. It was such a fun read that I went back and just read it again and it was enjoyable. I also knew that it was made and written by the guys that did ‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’, which was a movie that I loved and saw four times. So, one of the things that I loved about that movie was it was very clever and self-aware. Nicolas Cage is so funny playing himself and I loved how this thing starts to weirdly morph into a Nicolas Cage movie, like an action movie. I thought it was just a very clever approach. So that these guys were taking another similarly unique and funny way to deal with movie remakes, but it’s not really a remake. It’s commenting on a lot of that stuff and doing it in a very meta and funny way.

MF: Jack, what was your reaction to this unusual approach to rebooting ‘Anaconda’?

Jack Black: I was like, dude, if we can make a movie that’s half as compelling and funny and interesting as ‘Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’, then sign me up. Because I saw that movie and I was like, holy cannoli, I’m jealous.

MF: Jack, you have appeared in the same movies as Paul before, but never starred opposite him in a film. What was it like to get to finally work together on a big scale comedy like this?

Jack Black: I mean, that was a big draw for me because I’ve always felt like me and Paul would be great together. I’ve been a huge fan of his as he knows, I tell him.

(L to R) Jack Black and Paul Rudd on the set of Columbia Pictures’ 'Anaconda'. Photo: Bradley Patrick. © 2025 CTMG, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

MF: Finally, Paul, anything you want to add about having a chance to work with Jack after all these years.

Paul Rudd: It makes people uncomfortable how much Jack and I fawn over one another like broken records. You want me to fawn over Jack? Easy. Per square inch, there isn’t a person out there that has more talent packed in to one gorgeous case. Jack is a talent tornado. He’s a comedy tsunami. He’s not just an actor. He’s not just a comedian. He’s not just a rock God. He’s the kindest, most brilliant, beautiful human being and those are rare in this business. If you ask anybody who’s met him, they’ll say the same thing. He’s a unicorn. So, anytime this comes around, I’m ready to jump on those coattails like that.

    • Jerry Bruckheimer says he’s developing a sequel to 1995 submarine thriller ‘Crimson Tide’.
    • Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman starred in the original.
    • A writer and director are involved in the new potential project.

Having seen big success wrangling a sequel to one of his previous hits via ‘Top Gun Maverick,’ producer Jerry Bruckheimer is looking to do it again.

Talking on a recent episode of ‘The Rich Eisen Show,’ Bruckheimer revealed that he was in the early stages of developing a follow-up to 1995 submarine thriller ‘Crimson Tide.’

    1325

While the new project is still very much in its infancy, Bruckheimer did say that a writer and director –– who he did not name –– were already having discussions with the Navy as to the current state of undersea warfare, as a new scenario will be needed for this movie.

In the near future, Russian rebels have seized control of one of the ICBM bases in the USSR. Alarmed by the prospect of a rebel strike, the U.S. sends the USS Alabama, a nuclear ballistic missile submarine, to watch over the base and retaliate in case they launch.

While on patrol, the submarine is attacked and the radio systems are knocked out, but after first receiving an emergency message from HQ to launch nuclear missiles at the rebels. A second emergency message received during the battle is only partially recovered.

Captain Ramsey (Gene Hackman) decides to carry out the first order to launch the missiles regardless while Executive Officer Hunter (Denzel Washington) wants to wait for a successful receipt of the second message once the radio systems are repaired. The conflict escalates into mutiny as Ramsey and Hunter fight for control of the Alabama’s nuclear missiles.

The movie, directed by Tony Scott, also featured Viggo Mortensen, Steve Zahn, James Gandolfini, Matt Craven and George Dzundza.

But it was perhaps more famous for the people behind the keyboard for the script; while Michael Schiffer’s name is on the screenplay, with Richard P. Henrick credited for the story, there was an extensive list of writers who did passes, including Robert Towne and Quentin Tarantino.

According to Bruckheimer, the hope is to entice Washington to return (Hackman retired years ago and died in February of this year).

Here’s what he said about the possibility:

“If we give him a good script, I think he’d do it.”

Variety reached out to a source close to Washington, who brought word that the actor would consider the idea, but is certainly waiting to see any screenplay.

As to who is at work on the concepts for the new movie, Bruckheimer declined to name them.

There are no details, plot or otherwise, about this sequel, so we can only speculate what it might focus on. The technology behind nuclear submarines has moved on considerably from the days of the original, and yet the basics remain.

A nuclear submarine was a key plot point in the last two ‘Mission: Impossible’ movies, and the concept of technology aboard such a vessel could well play into the new one.

And it’s worth noting that Disney, which has the rights to ‘Crimson Tide’, has yet to comment on the possibility of any sequel –– but given Bruckheimer’s long working relationship with the studio, he certainly has leeway to say what he likes about future projects.

What else is Jerry Bruckheimer developing?

Bruckheimer, who shepherded the original ‘Crimson Tide’ alongside business partner Don Simpson, has a wide variety of projects in development.

He was most recently behind hit Brad Pitt racing drama ‘F1’, which has now earned more than $167 million worldwide after a week on release.

And he’s produced other sequels to his past movies, including the ongoing ‘Bad Boys’ franchise and ‘Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F’, which saw Eddie Murphy back in his most famous role.

Given that his producing portfolio also includes TV alongside movies, Bruckheimer is moving ahead on the likes of new ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movies (including one with Margot Robbie attached), another ‘National Treasure’ and a TV series based on ‘Enemy of the State’.

Chief among them, though, might be the work on a third ‘Top Gun’ movie, which star Tom Cruise and writer Christopher McQuarrie are looking to crack.

Here’s what Bruckheimer told Eisen about a potential return for Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell:

“I can’t talk about [the story] yet, but it’s a real good one.”

What else is Denzel Washington working on?

The actor will next be seen leading Spike Lee’s crime thriller ‘Highest 2 Lowest,’ based on Akira Kurosawa’s classic ‘High and Low’.

Though he has been making statements about retiring, at least from acting, he’s still keeping busy.

This is what he said about potentially stepping back from being on screen:

“There are very few films left for me to make that I’m interested in, and I have to be inspired by the filmmaker. The things that are going on for me professionally behind the camera are as important to me now as in front of the camera. I think there’s less and less time I’ll be spending in front of the camera.”

He’s preparing to work on crime drama ‘Here Comes the Flood,’ and he’s talked up a potential role in the planned third ‘Black Panther’ movie, which director Ryan Coogler has confirmed could happen, and he has other possible roles coming up, including a project about the historical warrior Hannibal.

And even if he does decide that his days as an actor are numbered, he’ll likely to continue to produce and direct movies.

When might the ‘Crimson Tide’ sequel be on screens?

With the script not even written yet and no other details offered, we don’t expect this one to come together for a while yet.

If Denzel Washington does sign on to star, that’ll have this one moving a little faster and encourage the studio financiers to turn their keys and release the funds for this one to be made.

While the original is certainly funny intentionally in places, the 1997 giant snake thriller ‘Anaconda’ is mostly remembered for being ridiculous even when it tries to be horrific (and let’s be honest, a lot of that is due to Jon Voight’s leery schmuck).

Now, though, Sony’s Columbia arm has a new take on the concept, and this time the focus is firmly on the funny, with Jack Black and Paul Rudd aboard to star.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the cast has swelled to accommodate ‘Westworld’s Thandiwe Newton, ‘Silo’ actor Steve Zahn, Selton Mello of Oscar hopeful ‘I’m Still Here’ and ‘Beef’s Ione Skye.

The original movie starred Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson, Ice Cube and Voight, and followed a National Geographic film crew who is hunting for the world’s largest and deadliest snake, only to find the tables turned.

As you might expect, there is a lot of giant snake action.

That first outing didn’t strike critics well but grossed $136 million at the global box office and went on to quickly reach cult classic status.

‘Anaconda’ was followed by a series of films, including 2004’s ‘Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid’, which also did good theatrical business, before a plunge into schlock fare with two movies that aired on the Sci-Fi Channel in 2008 (starring David Hasselhoff) and 2009.

The last outing was in 2015, when the horror franchise was paired with the crocodile-centric ‘Lake Placid’ series for a horror comedy titled simply, ‘Lake Placid vs. Anaconda,’ starring Yancy Butler and Robert Englund.

As you might expect given the presence of Black and Rudd, the aim is for the new movie to go a more comedic route.

Tom Gormican, who last brought us Nicolas Cage spoof ‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’, co-wrote the script with collaborator Kevin Etten and is now rolling the cameras in Australia to take advantage of tax breaks via the Queensland Government through Screen Queensland’s Production Attraction Strategy.

The new story, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s sources, involves a group of friends facing mid-life crises who are remaking their favorite movie from their youth.

They head to the rainforest, only to find themselves in a fight for their lives against natural disasters, giant snakes and violent criminals.

Black will play an erstwhile director, a man stuck in his job as a wedding videographer, while Rudd will play an actor who did a stint on a cop show but sees his Hollywood dreams slipping further and further away.

Newton and Zahn are other childhood friends that join the two on the ill-fated adventure, while Mello will play a Brazilian animal wrangler. Skye is playing Black’s wife.

She is the kind of woman who sharpens knives in the dark and lights cigarettes in a steady stream that (unfortunately) looks every bit as cool as tobacco companies promised in their early days. The move didn’t brighten Frances’ dreary skies, and she must figure out how to get her figurative groove back, and the journey proves fabulous.

  • Six Reasons Why ‘Planet of the Apes’ Suffered Franchise Fatigue at the Box Office

You’d think the folks at Fox would be going bananas over the box office victory this weekend for “War for the Planet of the Apes.”

After all, this was supposed to be the first truly close competition of the summer, with “War” battling the still-strong second weekend of “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” In the end, however, “War” was far and away the winner, earning an estimated $56.5 million — slightly-less than what was projected — while Spidey also fell behind expectations with an estimated $45.2 million

And yet, by the franchise’s own standards, it’s hard not to see “War” as a disappointment. It opened in more theaters than the first two films in the prequel trilogy, 2011’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” and 2014’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.” Still, it opened well below “Dawn” (which debuted with $72.6 million) and barely a hair above “Rise” (which premiered with $54.8 million). It was also riding good reviews (95 percent at Rotten Tomatoes) and excellent word-of-mouth (it earned an A- at CinemaScore, just like the two previous “Apes” films).

Domestically, “War” could well end up the lowest grossing of the current “Apes” trilogy,” failing to beat the $208.5 million “Dawn” earned in North America or even the $176.8 million that “Rise” earned here. Plus, the movie cost $150 million to make. For Fox to earn a profit, after production costs, marketing costs, and the theater owners’ share of ticket sales, “War” will have to earn about $600 million worldwide, so its global gross of $102.5 million so far suggests that breaking even will be a long shot. How did this happen? Here are a few reasons to factor in:

    1. Superheroes > Apes
Even with the disappointments this summer of such sequels as “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” “Transformers: The Last Knight,” and “Despicable Me 3,” Hollywood’s shrugging assessment that moviegoers were suffering from franchise fatigue rang hollow. After all, these films earned terrible reviews and weak word-of-mouth. Some franchise movies with good reviews and positive word-of-mouth were succeeding, like “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” “Wonder Woman,” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”

But what if it was just that these movies all featured DC and Marvel comic book heroes? Individual moviegoers may claim to be getting tired of superheroes, but as a group, we still flock to see them, even when the movies earn terrible buzz, like “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Suicide Squad.” Maybe what “War” needed was an ape with a cape.

    2. Rotten Tomatoes Scores Matter to a Point
The studios have been complaining all summer that poor scores at RT have been discouraging customers, especially since those scores appear right in front of the virtual box office window at Fandango. As this column noted last week, there is some research that suggests that weak RT scores do affect online buzz. However, that research also showed that high RT scores do little to improve buzz. Which means, as good as the reviews were for “War,” they didn’t really help sell tickets.

    3. “War” Looked Too Much Like “Dawn”
Conventional Hollywood wisdom has it that mass audiences want to see something familiar and comforting. That’s the logic behind having so many reboots, remakes, sequels, and universe-building films, and it’s the reason why so many sequels seem to deliver the same experience as previous installments. If there really is franchise fatigue, this is what causes it, and it’s one reason why audiences responded so well to “Wonder Woman” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming”: even though they told familiar stories, they felt fresh and different in their approaches.

Looking at the trailers for “War,” however, its scenes of gorilla guerrilla warfare looked a lot like those of “Dawn.” Also, if you think about it, “War” is not just the third movie in a trilogy that started six years ago; it’s the ninth movie in a franchise that’s been around for 49 years and which also included multiple spinoffs in other media.

Ticket buyers who saw “War” seem to have enjoyed it as much as they did the last two movies, but to get them into the theater, the film’s marketing needed to do a better job of convincing those moviegoers that “War” was not something they’d seen before.

    4. Star Power Still Means Something
Used to be that Hollywood valued movie stars for their ability to sell tickets. Now, however, what matters is their ability to get likes on Instagram and Facebook.

Social media buzz is increasingly crucial to a film’s success, and that means casting stars with big online followings. Woody Harrelson, “War”‘s most recognizable face, may have been a familiar face to moviegoers and TV viewers for more than 30 years, and he may have boosted his profile recently by co-starring in the huge “Hunger Games” franchise, but he doesn’t have much of a social media game. Neither does Steve Zahn, who plays a prominent new ape character. Andy Serkis, who has played the lead role of chimpanzee Caesar in all three of the recent “Apes” films, does have a solid Twitter following, but it seems not to have been enough.

    5. Timing Is a Big Deal
“Homecoming” may have settled for second place this weekend, and it may have taken a bigger second-week hit than expected, tumbling 61 percent from last weekend’s premiere. Still, Spidey proved a formidable adversary to Caesar.

Pre-sales for the two movies on Fandango were neck-and-neck, with “Homecoming” just a nose ahead of “War.” Indeed, “War” had to fight off a lot of still-strong movies that targeted similar viewers. Action fans also had “Homecoming,” “Baby Driver,” and “Wonder Woman” as options. Older viewers who might have appreciated “War”‘s philosophizing and nostalgia value, may have been drawn to critical darlings “Baby Driver” and “The Big Sick.” And women may have turned toward the romantic comedy of “The Big Sick” or the horror of new release “Wish Upon.”

By contrast, “Dawn” had little serious competition when it opened on this same weekend three years ago — just the third week of “Transformers: Age of Extinction” and the second week of “Tammy.” Neither film earned more than $17 million that weekend, giving “Dawn” an easy ride to its $72.6 million premiere.

But it’s not just movies that have already opened that are rivals to “War.” After all, next weekend sees the releases of “Dunkirk,” “Girls Trip,” and “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.” One is a Christopher Nolan action epic, the sort of movie that demands to be seen on the big screen and that attracts adults of all ages. One is a comedy that targets women and African-American viewers. And one is a sci-fi wild card from “Fifth Element” and “Lucy” director Luc Besson. As audiences flock to “Dunkirk” and “Girls Trip,” “War” could have a tough time staving off erosion during its second weekend.

    6. Can’t Always Count on International Markets
It’s still possible that overseas moviegoers could rescue “War,” the way they have so many other domestic underperformers this year, and the way they did the last two “Apes” movies, which earned between 63 and 70 percent of their total grosses abroad.

So far, however, “War” has earned just 45 percent of its total overseas. That share may well improve over the coming weeks. Still, the film’s foreign grosses will have to be about ten times what they are now in order to make a profit, and that’s unlikely.

As “Transformers: The Last Knight,” “The Mummy,” and “Baywatch” have all demonstrated this summer, you can make the lion’s share of your money overseas and still not turn a profit. Writing off the domestic audience is leaving money on the table. As “War” has shown by premiering $17.1 million below “Dawn,” every American ticket dollar is worth fighting for.

  • 16 Things You Never Knew About ‘That Thing You Do’

It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years since the release of Tom Hanks‘ “That Thing You Do.”

But even after two decades, that catchy hit song from The Oneders, er, The Wonders, is still stuck in our heads. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Tom Hanks‘ directorial debut, here are some interesting facts you might not know about this fan-favorite.
1996 (l to r) Tom Hanks, Johnathon Schaech, Liv Tyler, Ethan Embry, Tom Everett Scott and Steve Zahn star in the new movie written and directed by Tom Hanks. That thing you do1. Though composed specifically for the film, the song “That Thing You Do” became quite popular in the real world. In 1996, It reached as high as #41 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts that year. It was also nominated for both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award.
    2. The song was written by Fountains of Wayne’s bass player, Adam Schlesinger. He entered the contest that Hanks and the producers had, asking people to submit a Beatles-like tune called “That Thing You Do.” Out of 300 entries, Schlesinger’s was picked.
    3. The song proved so catchy, that other bands released their own covers. Both NSYNC (really?!) and New Found Glory recorded their own takes on the retro-flavored song.

    4. The band is purely fictional, obviously, but they are inspired by at least two others named “The Wonders” in the early 1960’s. Their brief, localized success might have inspired the film; one had a radio hit in Iowa, and the other was popular in Ohio.
    5. Though the film is set in Erie, PA, it wasn’t filmed there. The exterior shots were actually filmed in Orange, CA, in the section of town named Old Town. The entire block was converted to look like Erie as it existed in the ’60s.

    6. Hanks wrote the script in 30 days, while on the press junket for a little movie called “Forrest Gump.”
    7. Most fans are probably aware that Tom Hanks wrote and directed “That Thing You Do,” but did you know he also wrote some of the music? Hanks composed the opening song, “Lovin’ You Lots and Lots” (which is credited to the fictional “Norm Wooster Singers” in the credits). He also wrote the drum solo, “I Am Spartacus.”

    8. No actual music from the 1960s was used in the film. (I know, right?!) Hanks avoided including any source music from the period, sticking to a soundtrack of original compositions. This was mainly because of the cost involved in licensing popular music, but also because Hanks had recently worked on the pop music-filled “Forrest Gump.”9. Hanks cast several family members in small cameo roles. His daughter, Elizabeth, can be seen waiting in a dress shop. His son (and future movie star himself), Colin (above), is the usher escorting Liv Tyler’s character, Faye. And Hanks’ wife, Rita Wilson, played a cocktail waitress.10. Hanks also populated the film with three notable celebrity cameos: Chris Isaak plays Uncle Bob, who records the band’s son on vinyl in a church. Director Paul Feig plays the eccentric DJ that plays the Wonders’ tune. And the guy directing the beach movie above? Hanks’ director from “Philadelphia,” Jonathan Demme.
    11. Even though the music was mostly re-recorded in post-production, Hanks insisted that all of the actors in the band learn how to play their respective instruments. That required weeks of intensive practice before filming actually began.

    12. Fans curious about what became of The Oneders/Wonders after the events of the movie can turn to the soundtrack album for answers. The album’s liner notes reveal that “That Thing You Do” wound up peaking at #2 on the Billboard charts, and that Mr. White eventually became president of the Playtone label.
    13. Ethan Embry’s bass player (above) is never actually referred to by name in the film. Even in the credits, he’s simply named “T.B. Player.”

    14. Unsurprisingly, the film includes many nods to the hugely popular band The Beatles, whose rise to fame in the early ’60s inspired the film’s story. But perhaps the most interesting Beatles homage is that Hanks’ character, Mr. White, is named after Andy White, a session drummer who filled in for Ringo Starr on the hit single “Love Me Do.”
    15. In an extended addition of the film, it is revealed that Mr. White has a boyfriend, played by Howie Long.
    16. Here are some alternate names for the band: Mom’s Hot Dish (a creation of actor Steve Zahn), The Lords of Erie, Jimmy in This and Jimmy in That, The Hanks, and Faye’s Addiction.

  • Adam Sandler Lines Up All-Star Cast for His Netflix Movie ‘Ridiculous 6’

When Adam Sandler secured his lucrative deal with Netflix, it was unclear what the first project from this groundbreaking union would be. Well, The Wrap is reporting that the first film will be Sandler’s long-gestating western comedy “Ridiculous 6.” What’s more, the site is reporting that Sandler has lined up an all-star cast. Apparently, with his first Netflix outing, Sandler wants to go big.

“Ridiculous 6,” co-written by Sandler and regular collaborator Tim Herlihy, will star Blake Shelton, Whitney Cummings, Luke Wilson, Steve Zahn, Nick Nolte, Danny Trejo, Chris Parnell, Lavell Crawford and returning Sandler favorites Steve Buscemi, Rob Schneider (so I guess he patched up whatever beef he had with Sandler that kept him out of “Grown Ups 2”), Dan Aykroyd, Nick Swardson, Terry Crews, John Lovitz and Vanilla Ice. Whew, that’s a lot of people.

What’s somewhat more iffy about the project is the fact that it’s a comedic western, with the title an obvious riff on “The Magnificent Seven” (itself a western take on Akira Kurosawa’s immortal “Seven Samurai”). This must have been the reason it had such a long and problematic production history, having first been developed at Sony before moving on to Paramount, who too reached an impasse with the expensive and unproven genre.

This project seems even riskier coming so closely after “A Million Ways to Die in the West,” Seth MacFarlane’s costly bomb that was also a western comedy. Still, “A Million Ways to Die in the West” didn’t have Vanilla Ice playing Mark Twain or Blake Shelton playing Wyatt Earp… So we’re willing to give this one the benefit of the doubt, especially since we presumably won’t have to pay for it, it will just appear on our Playstation 3 in 8 months (or whenever it comes out).
