Rumor Alert: Drew Goddard to Write, Direct ‘Spider-Man’ Reboot
There’s no word yet on just who will don Spider-Man’s spandex suit for Sony and Marvel’s joint reboot of the web-slinging superhero, but the flick may already have its writer and director locked down.Latino Review is reporting that Drew Goddard (“Cabin in the Woods”), who was already on board to write and direct Sony’s now-delayed “Sinister Six,” will now cover both those roles for the new “Spider-Man” flick. According to the site, “Sinister Six” has been scrapped for good, and Goddard is now focusing exclusively on Spidey, whose new film may be titled “Spectacular Spider-Man.”
Latino Review’s report also contains an interesting note about the possible plot of “Spectacular,” with may find “Spider- Man fighting Iron Man and then trying to pass the ‘audition’ to join the Avengers.” The site goes on to say that villains that make up the Sinister Six will be featured in that same film, and depending on its success, may one day get their own spinoff.
So far, Sony and Goddard aren’t commenting on the veracity of Latino Review’s report, and it would be wise to treat this as merely a rumor for now. But considering Goddard’s existing relationships with both Sony and Marvel (he’s also a writer and producer on upcoming Netflix series “Daredevil”), his involvement in the “Spider-Man” project makes sense.
Stay tuned.

New Spider-Man Is Going Back to High School
Spider-Man had better get ready for pop quizzes – Sony wants to send the character back to high school in the franchise’s next films.Variety reports that Sony is looking for a younger actor to replace Andrew Garfield, who would debut in an upcoming Marvel movie (likely “Captain America: Civil War”). A couple of names floating around are “Maze Runner” actor Dylan O’Brien and “Percy Jackson” star Logan Lerman.
First, Sony has to find a new director to replace Marc Webb before holding auditions. And they have yet to decide on whether Spider-Man should be Peter Parker or another character in the suit. But high school will definitely be a major setting in Spidey’s standalone films, which would “explore his awkward relationship with other students while fighting crime out of the classroom.”
Before a solo Spider-Man movie, however, he’ll probably appear in “Captain America: Civil War,” set for a 2016 release. In the comic books, the storyline pits Captain America against Iron Man, and Spider-Man is a pivotal part of their battle.

Will Spider-Man Be in the ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Movie?
Amongst the juicy tidibts that came out of the Sony hack was the revelation that the company had met with Marvel to discuss including Spider-Man in their cinematic universe. A deal was, unfortunately, not made then, but now comes a rumor that the two sides have finally shaken hands.Latino Review reports that Sony has agreed to allow Spider-Man (over which it has film rights) to appear in “Avengers: Infinity War – Part I” in 2018. “We’ll see an MCU Spider-Man in Infinity Wars Part 1, as that was the next logical place to insert him after they missed the window to logically include him in [Captain America 3] Civil War,” the site claims.
They also contend that Andrew Garfield, who starred in “The Amazing Spider-Man” and “Amazing Spider-Man 2,” would not play the part in the Marvel universe.
It’s all rumors and hearsay, and totally unsubstantiated. But if what Latino Review says is true, there will be a major reshuffling of the “Avengers” lineup by the time “Infinity War” comes out. (There are massive spoilers in their report about “Captain America: Civil War” and the next “Thor” movie.)
And what it could mean for Sony’s “Spider-Man” movies is unclear. Would Garfield star in a third film? Are they still hoping to launching Sinister Six and female-centric spinoffs?
There are still a lot of questions, but if Sony and Marvel have made a deal, it could mean exciting things for the superhero movie genre.

Sam Raimi Talks Spider-Man 3 Mistakes on Nerdist Podcast

“Evil Dead” director Sam Raimi was refreshingly open about some of the mistakes he made with “Spider-Man 3.” Raimi was one of the first indie directors to be tapped for a major franchise, and while “Spider-Man” and its sequel were fairly well received, “I messed up plenty with the third ‘Spider-Man,” Raimi told the Nerdist folks.
18651Raimi said, “It’s a movie that just didn’t work very well. I tried to make it work, but I didn’t really believe in all the characters, so that can’t be hidden from people who loved ‘Spider-Man.’ If the director doesn’t love something, it’s wrong of them to make it when so many other people love it.” He added that trying to raise the stakes even higher for the third film was “what doomed us. I should have just stuck with the characters and the relationships, and progressed them to the next step, and not tried to top the bar. I think that was my mistake.”
Raimi later added, “Most people just want to talk about the successful pictures… but very times do you hear filmmakers talking about their bad movies. I mean, people aren’t interested in them.”
Next up, Raimi is exec producing the TV series “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” which will star his old pal Bruce “The Chin” Campbell. The series is expected to debut in 2015.
