Keeping her return to movies rolling, Cameron Diaz has been lining up a variety of projects. And she’s adding another to the list, as Deadline reports that she’s teaming up with actor/writer/director Clea DuVall for a sequel to 1989 comedy ‘Troop Beverly Hills’.

DuVall has written a script for the new movie, and will call the shots for Sony’s TriStar arm.

We’re not sure we had either a sequel to the movie –– which celebrated its 30th anniversary back in 2019 –– or Diaz’ involvement on our bingo card, but it could certainly be fun.

The movie follows Beverly Hills socialite Phyllis Nefler (Shelley Long) who is undergoing a contentious divorce and seeks to prove her worth to her estranged husband. She becomes a den mother to a troop of Beverly Hills Girl Scouts that her young daughter belongs to. Her unorthodox ways run her afoul of a rival troop leader (Betty Thomas), but Phyllis and the girls persevere at the regional Jamboree.

We don’t yet know how the new movie will continue the story –– perhaps one of the kids is now grown up and has her own adventure?

    What’s the story of Venom?

Venom, created by writer Bill Michelinie and artist Todd McFarlane, was famously introduced as a villain in 1988’s ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ No. 300, and quickly became a fan-favorite as well as one of his arch-nemeses. He got his first solo comic in 1993.

The character then made his big-screen debut in Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man 3’, played by Topher Grace.

Sony produced three ‘Venom’ movies starring Tom Hardy as down-on-his-luck journalist Eddie Brock, who bonds with the symbiote. The eponymous first arrived in 2018, followed by sequels ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ in 2021 and 2024’s ‘Venom: The Last Dance.’

Hardy is aboard the new movie as a producer alongside live-action team Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, alongside Kelly Marcel, who wrote on all three of the movies and directed ‘The Last Dance.’

There’s no word on a plot for the animated movie at this early stage –– Sony is in the process of opening a writers’ room to develop ideas, run by Lipovsky and Stein.

The pair are also at work with Chris Columbus on a new ‘Gremlins’ movie. They are also developing to direct the original thriller ‘Long Lost’, described as ‘What Lies Beneath’ meets ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ and set up at Universal with Amblin Entertainment producing.

When will the new ‘Venom’ movie be on screens?

Given the development stage, Sony has yet to confirm a release date for the potential movie.

The news comes as studio backers Sony are seeing very positive early buzz for the second film in the planned trilogy, ‘28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,’ directed by Nia DaCosta.

‘28 Years Later,’ as the title suggests, picks up nearly three decades since London –– and the rest of the UK–– was overtaken by a virus that turned its victims into rage-filled monsters who savage their victims in 2002’s ’28 Days Later’.

While the “Z” word is never used, the Infected, for all their fast speed, are certainly a take on the zombie genre.

‘28 Weeks Later’, which was directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, picked up the story months later as the country is slowly cleared of the infected, with evacuated civilians returning –– even as the danger persists.
Boyle’s recent movie explores what life is like for the people who are making a go of living in the country –– and the fact that while the Infected are still a threat, the original movie’s theme of man’s inhumanity to man, even in the case of a unifying situation, also emerges.

The story of young Spike (Alfie Williams), the main survivor we met in that film will continue in the ‘Bone Temple’ alongside that of Ralph Fiennes’ Dr. Kelson, who has his own dealings with the infected. And it’ll also have more of a focus on the weird Sir Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell), the weird warrior who pops up at the end.

Who is involved in the third ‘28 Years Later’ movie?

Alongside the returning cast, Garland –– who has written and produced the movies so far –– is back on script duty, and there is the distinct possibility that Boyle might also direct this one.

Plus, Oscar winner Cillian Murphy –– who played Jim in the original ‘28 Days Later’ (and –– spoiler alert –– shows up in ‘The Bone Temple’) is likely to have a meatier role in the new film.

When will the third ‘28 Years Later’ movie be in theaters?

The third movie has yet to be formally announced by Sony, but since ‘The Bone Temple’ was shot shortly after ‘28 Years Later,’ that will be in cinemas sooner rather than later: January 16, to be exact.

Given the success of the original (it won eight Annie Awards, including for animated feature, and was nominated for best animated feature at the Oscars), and spurred by the reaction to ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ (which has been a sensation for the companies), a sequel is in development, as reported by Variety.

The first film was initially set to be released by Sony Pictures in 2020 after the title was changed to ‘Connected,’ but following delays due to the COVID pandemic, Netflix picked up the film (under its original title) for reportedly more than $100 million.

The movie follows the titular family as they drive their eldest daughter, Katie (Abbi Jacobson), across the country to film school in California.

While en route, a rogue AI called PAL (Olivia Colman) commanders an army of robots to launch a worldwide rebellion against humanity. It’s up to the Mitchells — including Katie’s technophobic father, Rick (Danny McBride), overly sweet mother, Linda (Maya Rudolph) and hyperactive younger brother, Aaron (Mike Rianda) — to save the day.

The exact details of how the director –– who has written the script with ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’s Shay Hatten –– will adapt the games, but he has at least opened up a little.

Here’s what Cregger told Inverse about his approach:

“I am the biggest worshiper of the games, so I’m telling a story that is a love letter to the games and follows the rules of the games. It is obedient to the lore of the games, it’s just a different story. I’m not going to tell Leon’s story, because Leon’s story is told in the games. [Fans] already have that.”

And at CinemaCon this year he described the concept as this:

“It’s built in the spirit of those games and follows one central protagonist from point A to point B, as they descend deeper into hell.”

But yes, Spidey, AKA Peter Parker, or rather Tom Holland, the actor who plays him in the MCU, has suffered a mild concussion after a stunt went wrong on the Pinewood, England set of new outing ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’.

According to Deadline’s reporting on the accident, Holland was performing a stunt and had a fall. He was taken to a local hospital and examined but not admitted, with instructions to rest and recuperate.

Since the movie’s shooting schedule included a lot with Holland (naturally), director Destin Daniel Cretton and the Marvel team have opted to shut down shooting for a week to let the actor get better.

Given that ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ changed things in a huge way for Holland’s Peter–– as you’ll likely recall, it ended with a spell that wiped everyone’s memory of him so as to protect the people he loves –– the storyline going forward is naturally something of a mystery.

We do at least know that Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who contributed to or wrote the previous three Spider-outings, are back on board for this one.

Even with Peter’s changed situation, the likes of MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon) are still likely to return.

Yet with ‘Stranger Things’ Sadie Sink’s casting earlier this year, that throws an interesting wrinkle in –– what if the plan is for MJ and Ned to have smaller roles while a new supporting cast rises to importance in Peter’s life?

Sink’s role being kept under wraps, and the studio will look to have it that way as long as possible.

Elsewhere, ‘The Bear’s Liza Colón-Zayas has also scored a role in the movie, but her character is also a mystery for now.

Jon Bernthal will be showing up as Frank Castle/The Punisher, after most recently being seen in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’.

Mark Ruffalo is back as the Hulk –– we’d guess in his Smart Hulk persona, which blends Bruce Banner with the Big Green Guy.

Finally, Michael Mando, the ‘Better Call Saul’ actor who cropped up in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ as Mac Gargan, the civilian version of Spidey villain Scorpion is also back, so he’ll presumably be causing problems.

When will ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ be in theaters?

While you might think a production pause could have a knock-on effect to the movie’s release, we’re told that’s not the case and it’s on track to still arrive on July 31st, 2026.

It’s just the latest big hit for the medium, following the success of ‘KPop Demon Hunters’, the Sing-Along version of which Sony released in collaboration with Netflix. But while ‘Demon Hunters’ technically doesn’t register on the charts, ‘Demon Castle’ is a theatrical bona fide sensation.

The new movie, which represents the first part of a trilogy, has already earned plenty of money globally, $300 million to be exact, including more than $200 million in its native Japan where it has become the country’s third-highest-grossing release of all time.

Sony’s anime distribution banner, Crunchyroll, backed the movie and gave the studio a genuine big hit after a quiet summer that included misses such as ‘Caught Stealing’ and more modest performers such as ‘Karate Kid: Legends’ and the legacy sequel ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’.

What else happened at the box office this weekend?

‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’, which had its own successful launch last weekend, took a 69% tumble, making $26.1 million, and bringing its domestic total to $131.1 million.

Third was ‘Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale’, looking to wrap up the series, which started on TV in the UK and previously spawned two other movies. This latest entry made $18.1 million, a little ahead of 2022’s ‘Downton Abbey: A New Era’.

In fourth place, we find ‘The Longest Walk’, the dystopian dramatic thriller adapted from the Stephen King story. It opened to $11.5 million, which considering its troubled development history, is seen as a minor victory for making it to screens at all.

And in fifth, Disney/Pixar’s ‘Toy Story’ was re-released in 2,375 theaters to mark its 30th anniversary, and it made $3.5 million.

Most of the rest of the top 10 was held by current movies, though another sequel, ‘Spinal Tap II: The End Continues’, debuted to a somewhat disappointing $1.67 million in ninth from 1,920 theaters.

    Preview:

    • Sony Pictures and Netflix are making a deal for a ‘ KPop Demon Hunters’ sequel.
    • The animated movie topped the box office and has soared in Netflix’s charts.
    • An awards run is planned for the first movie.

It should come as little surprise that, following the enormous success of animated outing ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ on Netflix, and the surprise smash hit of it topping the English-language charts this past weekend, that the streaming service and production studio Sony are making a deal for more.

While there are no concrete details about the sequel yet, it certainly makes sense for the two companies to come to terms for a follow-up.

The first movie, which dropped on Netflix without much fanfare, has become a pop cultural sensation, including huge download figures for its songs and a dedicated, repeat-viewing fanbase.

What’s the story of ‘KPop Demon Hunters’?

When they aren’t selling out stadiums, K-pop superstars Rumi, Mira and Zoey (AKA HUNTR/X) use their secret identities as badass demon hunters to protect their fans from an ever-present supernatural threat.

Together, they must face their biggest enemy yet – an irresistible rival boy band of demons in disguise.

The deal for the first ‘Demon Hunters’ — which was part of a larger, multi-title pact struck during the depths of the pandemic in 2021 — saw Netflix agreeing to cover the film’s entire $100 million budget in addition to paying Sony a fee of $25 million, or 25% of the budget and certain other costs. Sony also receives a piece of soundtrack sales, as well as music publishing fees for certain songs. Merchandising rights, however, belong solely to Netflix.

Some have said it was the wrong move by Sony to give up such a potential franchise cash cow, but given how tough it has been for original animation to make a dent on the box office, making it part of the company’s deal with Netflix has certainly paid dividends –– with the audience built via Netflix.

The renewed success of the movie has also led to Netflix positioning it as a potential Oscar nominee.

What will the story of the sequel be?

Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans have spoken publicly in the broadest strokes about a possible sequel, and are considered integral to the future of ‘Demon Hunters’. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony insiders say they have held preliminary conversations with the directors but as of yet, there is no deal on the table.

When will the ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ sequel hit screens?

That’s another big question. While you know the companies will want to strike while the iron is as hot as possible, it takes at least 2-3 years to make a movie like this, so we could be in for a wait.
