    Preview:

    • The third ‘Venom’ Movie’s title is ‘Venom: The Last Dance’
    • Tom Hardy is back to star, with co-writer Kelly Marcel directing.
    • This new film will now be released in October.

Things are changing for the third movie in the successful (though seemingly despite itself) ‘Venom’ franchise –– and for once in the increasingly beleaguered superhero genre, it’s more in a positive direction. Not only has the film been moved forward in terms of its release, but we now know it’ll be called ‘Venom 3: The Last Dance’.

‘Venom’ has proved to be one of the few bright spots of Sony’s Marvel-adjacent Spider-Man universe. While they have never been the biggest hit among critics, the Tom Hardy-starring movies have certainly scored with audiences, as the box office figures have shown.

So what can we speculate based on that title? ‘The Last Dance’ suggests the end of the story for now, but also the potential for a musical element. Given the bizarre partnership of man and symbiote that are a key point of the movies, we could certainly posit a crazed musical sequence.

What’s the story of ‘Venom’ so far?

Launching in 2018 with the first movie, ‘Venom’ sees Hardy as Eddie Brock, an investigative journalist struggling to keep his career afloat and hang on to his crumbling social life.

His world is already falling apart before he’s accidentally infected with the alien symbiote, which takes over his body and causes him to become a violent creature that is only too happy to eat people.

Eddie eventually forges an unlikely partnership with the creature that shares his body, and they end up fighting evil (and occasionally, yes, still eating people) together.

Though the original ‘Venom’, directed by ‘Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer, scored some awful reviews, it was a big box office hit, earning more than $850 million dollars.

Naturally, Sony commissioned a sequel, which saw Kelly Marcel, a long-time friend/collaborator of Hardy working together with the actor to write the script (they’d taken over from previous writers Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg on the first movie, sharing credit that time).

2021’s ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ saw actor-turned-director Andy Serkis taking over the director’s chair, with Eddie and Venom facing off against violent, psychopathic serial killer Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson), who merges with another symbiote and becomes the terrifying monster known as Carnage.

It was another blend of less-than-enthusiastic reviews but still healthy box office, ending up with a little over $500 million.

Who is making ‘Venom 3: The Last Dance’?

Even with the latest title news, there are few plot details available for the new movie. We can expect some of the usual hand (tentacle?) wringing about whether he’s an antihero or a slavering, sarcastic alien beast, and probably some of the comedy for which the franchise has been known so far.

For the third, Marcel has stepped up to direct, which might seem like a daunting task, but we’ll wait and see how it works out. Juno Temple, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Clark Backo are all among the cast joining Hardy on screen this time.

  • Sony Plans New Marvel Spider Shows

Could Sony be looking to compete with Disney+ in terms of Marvel output? The studio certainly seems to be stepping up to the televisual plate, with word last year that it was developing a series based on the ‘Silk’ comic books.

That has now developed into a full-blown development slate, with plans for several series. But ‘Silk’ will still be first out of the gate, albeit with new producers.

‘Silk: Spider-Society’ will feature the character of Cindy Moon. A Korean American classmate of Peter Parker’s, she was first created by created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos and introduced in the comic books in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man #1’ in 2014. Like Parker, she is bitten by a radioactive spider, which gives her the ability to move at incredible speed, shoot webs out of her fingertips, and possess an advanced Spider-Sense (known as Silk Sense). Tiffany Espensen played the character in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’, though not the superhero version.

When the show was first announced, Lauren Moon, a veteran of small screen titles such as ‘Good Trouble’ and Netflix’s ‘Atypical’ was reported as being in talks to run the series, but she’s no longer involved.

Instead, overseeing producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller (who, of course, are closely connected to the Spider-universe thanks to, well, the ‘Spider-Verse’ movies) are working with Angela Kang, who has spent the last few years as the main showrunner for ‘The Walking Dead’. Though she’s still linked to the ‘Dead’ world thanks to executive producing a Daryl Dixon spin-off of the long-running zombie show, her focus will now be ‘Silk: Spider Society’.

Also involved is regular Spider-producer Amy Pascal, who once more team with Lord and Miller to build out the suite of shows that will follow different characters under Sony’s rights. There are plenty to choose from, as the studio controls 900 Marvel characters as part of an arrangement made before Disney bought Marvel and spawned their successful cinematic universe.

“Angela is a pro’s pro whose perspective and creativity we greatly respect and admire. She’s also a hell of a lot of fun. She loves these characters and we feel really lucky for the chance to work with her to bring Cindy Moon’s story to the world” said Lord and Miller in a statement.

“I’m beyond thrilled to be joining the Amazon Studios family for this next chapter of my career. I look forward to working with the executive team on diverse, character-forward, watercooler shows for a global audience and am so excited to dive in to my first challenge – bringing Korean American superhero Silk to life on screen, ” said Kang.

In a quirk of the deal, the show will actually debut domestically on MGM+’s (you might know it as Epix) linear channel followed by a global launch on Prime Video.

  • ‘Venom’ Rating, Run Time, and Box Office Tracking Revealed

‘Venom’ Rating, Run Time, and Box Office Tracking Revealed

    Venom
    Sony Pictures Entertainment

Venom” is coming for your wallet. It’s best chance is through a PG-13 rating, so … goodbye R.

Tickets are now on sale for Tom Hardy‘s standalone “Spider-Man” spinoff. The rating has been revealed as PG-13, with a run time of 1 hour, 52 minutes — perfect for multiple showings a day in thousands of theaters.

“Venom” was once eyed for an R-rating, but last month it was previewed that Sony was more likely to go for PG-13. They want to leave the door open for possible future match-ups with young Spider-Man, and maybe some Marvel Cinematic Universe crossovers. The MCU does not do R.

Plus, they want money. Who doesn’t? But they especially want money to start building Sony’s Marvel Universe.  “Venom” is the first film in that universe, but there are more to come.

So while a PG-13 rating will disappoint hardcore “Venom” fans, it will also give the film a better chance at the box office, which gives Sony’s Marvel Universe a better chance for future spinoff success.

Look at “The Meg.” Jason Statham was open with his disappointment that the shark film was less gory and bloody than he signed on for. But it has made a killing at the box office with its PG-13 rating. The receipts don’t lie.

“Venom” is already benefiting from its more family-friendly rating. According to Variety, early box office estimates show “Venom” opening in the $60 million to $65 million range. Sony went lower with predictions of $55-$60 million — so if it does better they can say it beat expectations, and if it opens low they can say that was expected.

But as Variety noted, even if “Venom” opens toward the lower end of those predictions, it would still rank as the biggest October opening (not adjusted for inflation), topping the $55.8 million for “Gravity” in 2013.

“Venom” opens in theaters October 5th.
