  • Robert Downey Jr. Plans ‘Sherlock Holmes’ TV Spinoffs

Sherlock Holmes is a character that has been brought to the screen so many times at this point, it’s a wonder that TV and movie creators can find a fresh take on the idea. Robert Downey Jr. famously played the genius detective in two movies and if he has his way, there will be some Holmes extensions in the works at HBO Max.

This all stems from an interview that the actor/producer gave back in 2020 to Fast Company, where he explained he was looking to oversee some new developments in the Holmes world. “At this point, we really feel that there is not a mystery-verse built out anywhere, and Conan Doyle is the definitive voice in that arena, I think, to this day,” the star said about future installments of ‘Sherlock Holmes’. “So, to me, why do a third movie if you’re not going to be able to spin off into some real gems of diversity and other times and elements?”

Influenced, of course, by his decade spent working with the Marvel team, he’s now looking to apply that ethos to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s creation. While the pandemic appears to have gotten in the way of plans for the shows, Deadline reports that HBO Max now has two potential spin-offs in early development.

They would extend the world created in Guy Ritchie’s two ‘Holmes’ movies, the 2009 original and 2011 sequel ‘A Game of Shadows’. The movies also starred Jude Law as Dr. Watson, but the shows are unlikely to feature the main duo.

Instead, the blueprints call for the shows to be built upon characters that will be introduced in the third movie. There’s just one slight hitch to an otherwise solid idea: that movie has yet to be made.

Though ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and ‘Rocketman’ director Dexter Fletcher remains attached to handle the movie, it has been delayed more than once, partly by the pandemic and partly by its star’s busy schedule. Still, both Downey and his chosen director have said that they intend to get the movie in production. And this news could signal some forward movement.

It’s also not surprising to see HBO Max looking to expand another movie franchise on TV – it has seen big success with ‘Peacemaker’, which James Gunn based on the John Cena character from ‘The Suicide Squad’. And there are also shows in the works that will build on characters from ‘Dune’ (the Bene Gesserit sisterhood) and ‘The Batman’ (Colin Farrell’s Penguin character).

Any ‘Holmes’ show would, of course, have to differentiate itself from the long history of Sherlock TV – besides the BBC’s successful ‘Sherlock’ and CBS’ long-running series ‘Elementary’ – there have been all sorts of variations on the basic concept of the crafty character.

But with the backing of Downey Jr. and producing partner Susan Downey, the ‘Holmes’ shows could end up being a fun new take… Assuming they can finally get to work on the third movie. The game’s afoot!

  • ‘Sherlock Holmes 3’ Taps ‘Rocketman’ Director Dexter Fletcher

‘Sherlock Holmes 3’ Taps ‘Rocketman’ Director Dexter Fletcher

    Warner Bros.

It’s elementary for “Rocketman” director Dexter Fletcher, who has been hired to helm “Sherlock Holmes 3.”

Variety reports that Fletcher will take over the franchise from Guy Ritchie, who directed 2009’s “Sherlock Holmes” and its follow-up 2011’s “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.”

A third movie has always been planned, but was put on hold due to star Robert Downey Jr.’s busy schedule in various Marvel movies.

Jude Law is also expected to reprise his role as Watson.

Fletcher famously took over directing “Bohemian Rhapsody” after Bryan Singer left the project mid-production (though he did not receive credit as a director due to DGA rules). His most recent film, the Elton John biopic “Rocketman,” opened in May.

“Sherlock Holmes 3” is slated to hit theaters December 21, 2021.

‘Sherlock Holmes 3’ With Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law Pushed Back a Year

    Warner Bros.

Sherlock Holmes’ next case won’t be closed until 2021.

Warner Bros. has pushed back “Sherlock Holmes 3,” which reunites stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, a year from its original Christmas 2020 release date.

That means the third movie in the detective franchise will come a decade after “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.”

The first “Sherlock Holmes” opened in 2009, with Guy Ritchie directing Downey as the famous sleuth and Law as his sidekick Dr. Watson.

Both it and the sequel were big hits, but the third movie has been stuck in a development swirl as there was no script. Now, writer Chris Brancato (co-creator, “Narcos”) has been hired, so things should move more quickly.

It’s unknown if Ritchie will return to direct. His next film, the live-action remake of “Aladdin,” opens May 19.

The new date means “Sherlock Holmes” will face the second weekend of “Avatar 3,” the adaptation of Broadway’s “Wicked,” and an untitled live-action Disney film.

  • Robert Downey Jr. Still Plans to Make ‘Sherlock Holmes 3’

Robert Downey Jr. obviously failed in his mission to film his third “Sherlock Holmes” movie by the end of 2016. But don’t worry. He hasn’t forgotten about it!

In an April 2016 interview with ShortList, RDJ had said he and Guy Ritchie — director of “Sherlock Holmes” (2009) and “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” (2011) — were talking about the next movie. “We’ll attempt to make one this year. It really is a big deal to go and do those movies. I’m tired all the time, but I’m excited about it.”

It seemed like a stretch even then — considering he had “Captain America: Civil War” promotion, and filming for both “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “Avengers: Infinity War.” So it was not a shock that he didn’t get it done in 2016. Or 2017.

But here we are in 2018 … and RDJ is still super busy. But he was the one who brought up the third Sherlock Holmes movie during an “Avengers: Infinity War”-focused interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Here’s that part of EW’s article:

And what’s next? You and your wife [producer Susan Downey] have the Team Downey production company. You’re talking to animals while shooting The Voyage of Doctor Doolittle. What’s on the horizon?
First of all the missus is front and center with Joe Roth producing Doolittle. I’m having a good time, though I decided to give myself, like, 40 additional challenges, like a Welsh accent — which even Welsh people say is hard to do. Then there’s all this stuff down the pike. We’re looking at another Sherlock Holmes, we’re developing Perry Mason for HBO. I still want to do Pinocchio.

    That’s a full slate.
I have a million ideas, but I can tell you the God’s honest truth. Having done Avengers 3 and 4 back-to-back, and now doing [Doolittle] … When I’m done with this, if you hear I’m not taking a break, call me and tell me I’m crazy.

So he’ll probably take a break after playing Doctor Doolittle. But it would be nice to see his Sherlock Holmes again, with Jude Law back as John Watson.

Fun fact: Both modern Sherlocks — RDJ and Benedict Cumberbatch — will costar in “Avengers: Infinity War.” And their Watsons are both in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well — Jude Law joining the MCU in “Captain Marvel,” and Martin Freeman costarring in “Black Panther.”

Maybe the real question is when will Jude Law have time for “Sherlock Holmes 3,” between his new role in the MCU and playing young Dumbledore in the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise?

“Avengers: Infinity War” opens April 27th.

  • Millie Bobby Brown to Star in ‘Enola Holmes Mysteries’ Films as Sherlock’s Sister

75th Annual Golden Globe Awards - ArrivalsThis news goes to Eleven!

“Stranger Things” star Millie Bobby Brown, 13, has already booked her next franchise. According to Deadline, she’ll both produce and star in a feature film series based on the “Enola Holmes Mysteries” novels by Nancy Springer.

Enola Holmes, in the novels, is the 14-year-old sister of the famous Sherlock Holmes, and also Mycroft Holmes, both 20+ years her senior. The six novel series started in 2006 with “The Case of the Missing Marquess,” showing Enola as a skilled detective in her own right. (Side note: Did you notice that “Enola” written backward is “Alone”?)

There have been several Sherlock Holmes adaptations over the decades, with recent modern versions starring Robert Downey, Jr. on the big screen and Benedict Cumberbatch on the small screen. It’ll be refreshing to see a new young Holmes on the case.

Millie will produce the Enola Holmes film series through her PCMA Productions banner. She already has a relationship with Legendary Entertainment in the “Godzilla: King of Monsters” sequel coming out March 22nd, 2019.

Millie just joined her “Stranger Things” costars at the 2018 Golden Globes, where they didn’t win a blessed thing other than our hearts. “Stranger Things” Season 3 hasn’t started filming yet, and the cast admitted they don’t know anything about what’s to come. Netflix is expected to release Season 3 in either late 2018 or (more likely) 2019. There’s no release date yet for the Enola Holmes films, but we’ll stay on the case!

  • Robert Downey Jr. Plans to Film ‘Sherlock Holmes 3’ This Year: ‘I Can’t Wait’

How can Robert Downey Jr. squeeze a third “Sherlock Holmes” movie into 2016, what with worldwide promotion for “Captain America: Civil War” followed by “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” and filming for Marvel’s two “Avengers: Infinity War” behemoths? It won’t be elementary (here all week!), but Downey is itching to crack another case with director Guy Ritchie and co-star Jude Law.

Downey recently talked to ShortList about “Civil War” and name-dropped Ritchie, who directed both 2009’s “Sherlock Holmes” and 2011’s “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.”

    Here’s the conversation from there:

You mentioned hanging out with Guy Ritchie in London. Have you had any discussions about a third Sherlock Holmes film?

We’re talking about it right now. NOW. I can’t wait.

    Do you mean today?

We can do some preliminary stuff. If we could shoot it on Skype, we could have it done in a week. I know Guy Ritchie loves me as much as I love him – and he damn well should. When we’re making those Sherlock movies it is off the hook. We’ll attempt to make one this year. It really is a big deal to go and do those movies. I’m tired all the time, but I’m excited about it.

So they’ll attempt to make the film this year, but do you think they’ll be able to do it?

As Collider noted, “The 2009 original grossed a worldwide total of $524 million and its follow-up, A Game of Shadows, did marginally better with $545.4 million worldwide, so Warner Bros. would no doubt he happy to greenlight Sherlock Holmes 3.” Getting a green light seems like the least of the problems, but if RDJ makes this a priority, the seas will probably part to make it happen.

  • TV Detectives From Different Shows Who Should Totally Be Partners

    %Slideshow-299227%
What’s a TV detective without a partner who challenges them, makes them better professionally, brings new expertise to the table, and fulfills their lives in ways they never knew they needed? Whether it’s a wacky buddy cop dynamic or a tense match-up rife with complex conflict, the crime-solving duo has become one of the most entertaining TV genres around. We’ve come to know many small-screen sleuths over the years, and we have to say that most of them have been paired with near-perfect partners. But what if we switched things up a bit? Here are 9 pairs of TV detectives we would totally tune in to watch together, even though they hail from completely different series.

  • Ian McKellen Is an Aging Sherlock in the ‘Mr. Holmes’ Trailer

    Mr. Holmes
The new film “Mr. Holmes” is a fresh take on the Sherlock Holmes character known the world over, which picks up with the famous detective years after the height of his fame, as he’s grappling with aging and one last, seemingly unsolvable case.

Ian McKellen plays the titular character, who sneers at depictions of his life on the big screen and denies ever donning a deerstalker cap or smoking a pipe (he prefers cigars, thank you very much). Yet despite the legend that he’s become, Holmes still can’t shake the last case of his career, one he failed to solve and which haunts him daily.

He strikes up a friendship with Roger, the young son of his housekeeper (Laura Linney), and re-opens his files, all the while coming to terms with what may be the last chapter of his life. This is treacly territory — old man befriends little boy, feelings ensue — but the cliche seems to be in good hands with McKellen at the helm. The actor, himself in the twilight of his career, is tailor-made for this part, and his soulful performance should imbue this visually-stunning film with even more beauty.

“Mr. Holmes,” directed by Bill Condon (who also directed McKellen to an Academy Award nomination in “Gods and Monsters”), is due in theaters on July 17.

  • ‘Sherlock’ Special Episode Will Take Place in Victorian Era

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have been playing very modern versions of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson in “Sherlock,” but a special upcoming 90-minute episode will take them back in time to the Victorian era of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original stories.

Entertainment Weekly talked to “Sherlock” co-creator Steven Moffat before a SXSW conference, noting that fans had seen the show’s two stars dressed in 19th century clothes during recent filming. Were the characters dressing up for a party, a dream sequence, or some other reason yet to be explained?

“The special is it’s own thing,” Steven told EW. “We wouldn’t have done the story we’re doing, and the way we’re doing it, if we didn’t have this special. It’s not part of the run of three episodes. So we had this to do it – as we could hardly conceal – it’s Victorian.” He said the standalone episode is its own little “bubble” and it’s basically completed.

That episode is expected to debut around Christmas 2015, before the launch of Season 4’s three new episodes.
