Earlier this week, Moviefone had the pleasure of attending a virtual press conference, along with other members of the press, for ‘F1’ featuring director Joseph Kosinski, and a video introduction from Lewis Hamilton, producer and Formular One World Champion.

Here’s what Kosinski and Hamilton had to say about making ‘F1’.

    The Champion Speaks

The press conference began with an introduction from Formula One World Champion race driver Lewis Hamilton, who is also a producer on the film.

“Joe (Kosinski), Jerry (Bruckheimer), Brad (Pitt), the cast and the whole filmmaking team put an incredible amount of effort to deliver a genuine Formula One racing experience, unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before on screen. As you may have heard, the film was shot during the F1 races over the course of a season, and with Joe at the helm, audiences around the globe are going to feel like they’re on the track and in the driver’s seat.”

Hamilton went on to discuss working with Brad Pitt and his commitment to the project.

“Watching Brad drive around speeds over 180 miles an hour was impressive to see because it’s not something you can just learn overnight. The dedication and the focus that Brad put into this process has been amazing to witness. This film has got it all. Brad Pitt, speed, thrills, an epic underdog story, drama, humor, and a little bit of romance.”

Finally, Hamilton expressed his pride in the film and promised something for Formular One fans and non-fans alike.

“You may even recognize some familiar faces from the world of Formula One racing. As someone who’s dedicated his whole life to this sport, I’m so honored to have worked alongside this team of actors and filmmakers. This has been such a thrill for me. I genuinely promise this film delivers on every level.”

    Why Formula One?

After Hamilton’s introduction, director Joseph Kosinski discussed why he wanted to make a movie about Formula One racing.

“Well, I think like a lot of people during Covid, I found myself starting to watch the races and found this great television show called ‘Formula 1: Drive to Survive’. I found that it’s an incredibly unique sport in that your teammate is also your, in many ways, your greatest competition. For me, that makes for a great drama. I also loved how the first season of the show focused on the last place teams, the underdogs rather than the Ferrari, the Mercedes, the Red Bull, the teams that you see at the front of the pack. I thought that there was an interesting story to be told about an underdog team trying to not win the championship, but just trying to win one race against these titans of the sport. So that’s where it started. Lucky for me, I had a contact who was in Formula One that I could reach out to, so I did.”

    Commitment to Authenticity

Kosinski discussed what steps he took to make sure the race scenes looked as authentic and accurate as possible.

“Well, the first thing I did was I reached out to Lewis Hamilton who gave that incredible intro, and obviously he lives that sport every day. He’s one of the greatest of all time and I asked him to be my partner on making this film. So having Lewis gave me this incredible in into this world, and one of the people he introduced me to was Toto Wolf, the team principal of Mercedes. I started talking with them about wanting to capture the speed of this sport, and It was actually Toto who came up with the idea of rather than making a movie car fast enough to achieve these speeds, but he said, “Why don’t you start with a race car and take a real race car and then work the cameras that you need into that”. So, we did that. We bought six F2 cars, real F2 race cars and worked with Mercedes AMG, the Formula One team and their engineers to build real race cars that could carry our camera equipment recorders and transmitters for making this film. So, every time you see Brad or Damson driving in this movie, they’re driving on their own in one of these real race cars on a real F1 track. So that’s kind of how we approached the making of this film.”

Kosinski also talked about the research he did to prepare for the movie.

“It’s one of the nice benefits of making a movie about Formula One is a lot of research, a lot of travel, and I got to see amazing tracks all over the world. One thing I really love about Formula One is every race has its own character and every weekend it’s very different. We end the film in Abu Dhabi, which is this incredible track that is just a spectacular way to end the film. But every track has its own personality, its own character, and because we went to all these places for real, you really feel like you’ve gone around the world when you watch the movie.”

    Shooting the Racing Scenes

Coming off the success of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, Kosinski explained how that movie prepared him for this film and how he was able to capture the incredible Formula One race scenes and bring that excitement and action to the big screen.

“I mean, the big challenge was just the camera system itself. We had to develop a brand-new camera system taking everything we learned on ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and pushing it much further. You can’t put 60 pounds of gear onto a race car and expect it’s going to perform the same way. So, we took those ‘Top Gun’ cameras and we worked closely with Sony, sizing them down to something about a quarter of the size. Then on top of that, something I really wanted to do on this film was to be able to operate and move the cameras while we were shooting, which was something we couldn’t do on ‘Top Gun’. So, we have motorized mounts on the car as well. So, you have transmitters that are transmitting the picture back. We’ve got transmitters controlling the movement of the camera. I’m sitting at the base station with Claudio (Miranda), our cinematographer looking at 16 screens. I’ve got camera operators on the controls for the cameras and it’s calling out. The Camera moves like a live television show while they’re shooting. So much research and technology and development went into just being able to roll a frame of footage in addition to the training for the actors and the logistics of shooting at a real race. So, it was a lot of prep to be able to pull this off.”

Kosinski shot some scenes during real Formula One Championship races and explained the complications of trying to execute those scenes in a small window of time.

“I mean, the tracks, the locations are one thing, but on race weekend, it just becomes this whole different world. It’s like a traveling circus. So, we couldn’t just shoot at the track without the race going on. It would’ve been the wrong dynamic. So, we were there on race weekend with hundreds of thousands of people watching us finding these slots between practice and qualifying, that Formula One graciously afforded us. So, we’d get these 10- or 15-minute slots where we’d have to have Brad and Damson ready in the cars, warmed up with and ready to go, and as soon as practice ended, they would pull out onto the track. We’d have 24 to 30 cameras ready, rolling, and I’d have to shoot these scenes in these very short, intense, high-speed windows. But the crowd you’re seeing was there in the stands. I don’t think the crowd realized that Brad Pitt was in the car that was in front of them. So, there was this heightened quality to every race. We were also shooting dramatic scenes on the grid before races, so it was a unique way of working rather than having a whole day to shoot a scene like you normally would on a movie. We had these 9- or 10-minute slots, so it was like a live stage play, but in front of hundreds of thousands of people shooting at 180 miles an hour, literally. So, it was an adrenaline rush every weekend, but what we captured is something you can’t fake, you can’t stage. it was like game day. I remember our first day shooting at Silverstone (racetrack) with Javier (Bardem), Brad and Tobias Menzies. I literally had a piece of paper with, it looked like an American football diagram of where everyone had to stand and walk and where you had moved to. It was like we looked at it and it was like, break, let’s go do this. I think we got three takes in seven minutes or something and got what you see in the film. But the actors, you feel that in their performance, they know it’s like, we’re not going to get 15 tries at it. You got to nail it.”

    Driving School

'F1' opens in theaters on June 27, 2025.
‘F1’ opens in theaters on June 27, 2025.

Actors Brad Pitt and Damson Idris had to learn to drive real Formula One cars for the film and Kosinski discussed how Hamilton helped in their training.

“Brad and Damson are both driving in this film and to get them into these race cars, it required months, literally months of training. But the first day was fun. It was me, Brad and Lewis Hamilton at the track together, all of us jumping in cars and driving each other around in sports cars. Which was one of those things, I’ll never forget having Lewis Hamilton as your driving instructor. But what we learned and what Lewis was really interested was seeing did Brad know how to drive right? Because if Brad can’t drive, this whole film wasn’t going to work. What Lewis was very happy to discover was that Brad had a lot of just natural ability right from the start, and I don’t know where he got that or if he was born with it, but he rides motorcycles, which I think has something to do with it. He’s just a very talented, naturally blessed driver, which for Lewis, gave him a lot of confidence that we might have a shot at pulling this off. He just had that natural feel for grip in the car and what we’re doing on this film is dangerous. So yeah, you must be fearless, and when you see Brad driving, that’s not acting. He’s really concentering on keeping that car on the track and out of the wall during all those scenes. So that’s something that you just can’t fake, I think. I hope the audience feels that when they watch the movie.”

    Finding the Right Story

The director talked about how important it was to find the right script and unique characters for ‘F1’.

“It always starts with a great script and a great story. I knew that no matter how accurate or exciting the racing is, it doesn’t mean anything if you’re not telling a story supported with great characters. So, it all starts with the script, and I worked with Ehren Kruger, who also worked on ‘Top Gun: Maverick’. He wrote an incredible script for us to start with. This story has everything. It has the tension you would expect in a movie like this with all the action, but at the same time, there’s real heart here, especially in the story of Sonny Hayes and this kind of redemption journey he’s on. There’s humor in there, there’s some romance, there’s a little bit of everything that you need to tell a fully fleshed out rich story like this.”

    The Cast

The director also discussed his exceptional cast and what it was like to work with Oscar winners Brad Pitt and Javier Bardem.

“The most important thing a director does beyond developing the script is casting. Casting is everything. The group of actors that we pulled together for this film is incredible. Javier Bardem and Brad together, their friendship, which is an old one- three decades old, really is the core of this story and of this film and just seeing them together on screen is special. Kerry Condon, she’s incredible. She plays the team technical director, so she’s the person in charge of designing the car and the engineers and the drivers. There’s some healthy tension there on every team, and it makes for a great relationship between the two of them. Then Damson Iris, who people might know from his television career (‘Snowfall’), but maybe not from the movies. I’m really excited for people to see him here going toe to toe with Brad on a big screen and a big story. So, we have an incredible cast of supporting actors as well. It’s a great ensemble.”

Is ’F1’ for Racing Fans Only?

“Not at all,” answered Kosinski and the director went on to assure audiences that they don’t need to be Formula One fans to enjoy the movie.

“This is a movie about friendship, teamwork, sacrifice, and redemption. The story I think is universal. It’s just set in this incredibly exciting world of Formula One, and if you are a Formula One fan, I think you’re going to like this movie. If you don’t know anything about Formula One, I think you’re going to like this movie and you might come out wanting to watch some races or maybe even go to a race. So yeah, you don’t need to know anything going in. We’ll teach you everything you need to enjoy this story.”

Lily Gladstone stars in ‘Fancy Dance,’ now streaming on Apple TV+.

Premiering on Apple TV+ on June 28th following a limited run in theaters, ‘Fancy Dance’ offers yet another chance to appreciate the sheer acting ability of Lily Gladstone, who here is offered a fully rounded character in Jax Goodiron.

If you were frustrated with how Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ initially seemed to be exploring native stories and experiences before pivoting to focus on its cartoonishly scheming white characters, then let ‘Fancy Dance’ serve as a correction.

If Scorsese’s film, with its seemingly endless running time, couldn’t find enough space to center the indigenous characters, Erica Tremblay manages to tell a more effective and enveloping tale of native culture in a quick 90 minutes. And if Gladstone missed out on an Oscar for that performance, then ‘Fancy Dance’ should certainly see her considered for next year.

    Script and Direction

(L to R) Isabel Deroy-Olson and Lily Gladstone star in ‘Fancy Dance,’ now streaming on Apple TV+.

Tremblay wrote the movie alongside Miciana Alise, and together, they bring a real sensitivity plus hard-nosed honesty to both the narrative and its characters. More like something along the lines of FX series ‘Reservation Dogs’ (though without the deep well of comedy in that show), ‘Fancy Dance’s script is full of layered people who are far from noble natives. In reality, most of them are just trying to make a living in the tough conditions in which they find themselves. And the story is also shot through with grief and loss and balanced out by a coming of age story for one of the characters.

Tremblay is more normally a documentarian, but for this fictionalized effort, she applies a similar keen, observational eye to the proceedings here. Eschewing fancy camera moves or stylistic tricks, she instead finds beauty in the everyday. And she also encourages her cast to given completely believable performances, with Gladstone, Isabel Deroy-Olson and Ryan Begay standing out.

‘Fancy Dance’ keeps its focus narrow, letting the story breathe through a relatively small cast, though still featuring of a supporting cast to keep it vivid and full.

    Lily Gladstone as Jax Goodiron

Lily Gladstone stars in ‘Fancy Dance,’ now streaming on Apple TV+.

It would be demeaning to say that Gladstone is a revelation here; she has been putting in excellent work for several years now. But Jax is a character unlike almost anything she has played –– this is a damaged, clever, haunted young woman who lives by her own set of rules. When we’re first introduced to Jax, she’s keeping a fisherman occupied while her niece, Roki (Olsen) steals his wallet, some lures and the keys to his truck.

Jax is unapologetic, and also weighed down by the disappearance of her sister Tawi (Hauli Gray) and is endlessly angry that the federal authorities aren’t doing enough to track her down. This is a complicated woman, a hustler who deeply cares for her niece and is traumatized when Roki is carted off by family services to live with her semi-estranged father (Shea Whigham).

Cue Jax going on the run with Roki, ostensibly to take her to a powwow in Oklahoma (an event the girl has attended with her mother in the past, entering mother-daughter dances (which give the movie its title). Their journey is one of danger and learning about each other, all while the authorities are closing in –– ironically, they will launch a taskforce to find Roki who is with a relative while largely ignoring the disappearance of her mother.

    Isabel Deroy-Olson as Roki

Isabel Deroy-Olson stars in 'Fancy Dance,' now streaming on Apple TV+.
Isabel Deroy-Olson stars in ‘Fancy Dance,’ now streaming on Apple TV+.

Deroy-Olson sparks really well off of Gladstone’s energy, and comes across as an unpretentious, charismatic performer, steering clear of teen/tween cliches as Roki goes through a gamut of emotions –– she’s worried about her mother, suspicious of the authorities and loyal to her aunt, even as she wonders whether she’s the best role model. All the while, she wraps herself in tradition and culture as a way to keep her sanity. It’s one of the best young performances of the year.

    Ryan Begay as JJ

Jax’s brother, and a member of the reservation police force, JJ straddles two worlds, and is very much caught between them when Jax absconds with Roki. Begay has less to do than the two leads, but he’s a key supporting role, and brings low-key energy to the part.

    Shea Whigham as Frank

Whigham is one of the few truly recognizable names in the cast besides Gladstone, but he doesn’t stick out, instead meshing well with his fellow cast members as Jax’s father, who married a native and spent 15 years in reservation territory before pulling the eject cord when she died. He brings a sad, frustrated energy to his work here.

    Final Thoughts

(L to R) Lily Gladstone and Isabel Deroy-Olson star in ‘Fancy Dance,’ now streaming on Apple TV+.

A vital exploration of indigenous issues and the lack of attention paid to missing persons cases (especially women), ‘Fancy Dance’ is a carefully crafted movie that offers rounded characters and an interesting story. While a few cliches do creep in here and there (especially in the final act), they don’t impact it enough to reduce the effectiveness of the whole.

‘Fancy Dance’ receives 8 out of 10 stars.

What’s the story of ‘Fancy Dance’?

Since her sister’s disappearance, Jax (Lily Gladstone) has cared for her niece Roki (Isabel Deroy-Olson) by scraping by on the Seneca-Cayuga reservation in Oklahoma. Every spare minute goes into finding her missing sister while also helping Roki prepare for an upcoming powwow.

At the risk of Jax losing custody to Roki’s grandfather, Frank (Shea Whigham), the pair hit the road and scour the backcountry to track down Roki’s mother in time for the powwow. What begins as a search gradually turns into a far deeper investigation into the complexities and contradictions of Indigenous women moving through a colonized world while at the mercy of a failed justice system.

Who else stars in ‘Fancy Dance’?

Also in the cast are Ryan Begay, Crystle Lightning and Audrey Wasilewski.

  • Dan Stevens and Betty Gilpin Talk ‘Gaslit’

    Dan Stevens and Betty Gilpin
(L to R) Dan Stevens as John Dean and Betty Gilpin as Mo Dean in Starz’s ‘Gaslit.’

Premiering on Starz beginning April 24th is new mini-series ‘Gaslit,’ which is based on the podcast “Slow Burn” by Leon Neyfakh.

Set during the Watergate scandal, Martha Mitchell (Julia Roberts), wife of President Richard Nixon’s Attorney General John N. Mitchell (Sean Penn), becomes the first person to publicly announce that Nixon was involved in Watergate, throwing her husband’s personal and professional life into crisis.

In addition to Oscar-winners Roberts and Penn, the series also stars Dan Stevens (‘Beauty and the Beast’) as John Dean, Betty Gilpin (‘The Tomorrow War’) as Mo Dean, Darby Camp (‘Clifford the Big Red Dog’) as Marty Mitchell and Shea Whigham (‘Joker’) as G. Gordon Liddy.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Dan Stevens and Betty Gilpin about their work on ‘Gaslit.’

You can read our full interview with Dan Stevens and Betty Gilpin below or click on the video player about to watch our interviews with Stevens and Gilpin, Shea Whigham, Darby Camp, and executive producer Robbie Pickering.

Moviefone: To begin with Dan, what was it about this project that interested you?

Dan Stevens: I think it was getting the chance to kind of explode a bubble of history that I knew a little bit about, but it’s always fun when somebody lays out a series like this. The podcast that it was based on was utterly fascinating. My wife and I were gripped to that, just blowing up bubble after bubble of untold story corners of something that everybody thinks they know the bare bones about.

It’s really cool when you get to see something laid out in a different way that really kind of changes your perspective on things. I always enjoy that as a listener or a viewer. You come away thinking, “That’s not how it was told to me at all.” It’s a very refreshing perspective.

MF: What was the most interesting thing you learned about the Watergate scandal from working on this series?

DS: It is frequently described as a very stupid situation, but I think just realizing how unnecessary the whole thing was. I thought that the shenanigans that they were organizing were because it was very close and that this was a last-ditch attempt to snatch victory. They were going to win, hands down going to win, and I think that speaks to the dangerous ambition that was behind so much of the willpower of the situation.

Even though they were 19 points ahead and the victory was in the bag, they’re still going to play dirty, and events cascade from that. I still can’t quite get my head around it. That was something that really shocked me. I thought, why did they do this at all?

    Dan Stevens as John Dean
Dan Stevens as John Dean in Starz’s ‘Gaslit.’

MF: Betty, with all the crazy characters in this series, Mo Dean seems to be the only one with her “head on straight.” Can you talk about that?

Betty Gilpin: That’s right. Martha had her head on straight, too. It’s just a different kind of head, I guess. What struck me was, I didn’t realize there was so much time between the break-in and the discovery of the break-in. Of course, during which Martha was the only person saying the administration is behind this, you guys are crazy, and no one wanted to listen to her. I didn’t realize that it had been so long, this huge secret. Mo is kind of pushing John to do the right thing, I think that is a beautiful part of the story.

I think she’s inspired by Martha Mitchell. It wasn’t in vogue to be yourself out loud. It’s very popular now to be the brash social media version of yourself, your most authentic loudest self. But your public persona back then was very buttoned up and formal, and who you were behind closed doors was none of the public’s business.

I think Martha Mitchell was one of the only people who there was no difference between who she was at home and in front of the cameras, and she was going to say how she felt and the truth that she knew in public, whether her husband and the administration liked it or not. She’s kind of the birth of social media without social media. She’s incredible!

MF: Can you both discuss how Mo felt about John Dean the first time she met him?

BG: How did Mo feel? Well, when she first met him, I think it was one of those tender dates where you think, “What have I just left? I could just go. This isn’t going to work out.” I think she got douchebag vibes, honestly. I’m sorry, Dan. But then I think once that charm was turned on, she fell in love.

DS: Did you say douchebag vibes?

BG: Was that intentionally laced into your performance?

DS: I think there’s something inherently douche-baggy about the ambitious drive of a character like John Dean. I think, whether it’s specifically that man or just in general, I find that kind of man endlessly fascinating, slightly pathetic and a bit funny. I think that makes for a very enjoyable character to dive into, and think, why is he going after this? What’s the endgame?

MF: He wants to be Attorney General, is that correct?

DS: Maybe. Maybe that’s the very endgame. I think before that even happens it’s just about being in with the boys, which is such a lame ambition, but it’s the ambition of so many, and it always makes me laugh. Just the lengths that guys will go to have that sense of validation from a group of crusty old men in suits. I don’t get it, but it’s fun. It’s not exclusive. It was invented somewhere closer to home and I think it’s true of any administration. Circles of power make people do crazy things.

MF: Betty, what was it like working with actor and director Matt Ross on this project?

BG: Matt Ross is an incredible director. He’s also an incredible actor. I think having a director who is also an actor and gets what is conducive to helping make a good scene is so immensely helpful and really fun. The set was amazing. It was one of the funniest experiences I’ve had on a set.

I loved working with Dan Stevens. We had the best time together. You never know if between takes the actor that you are working opposite is going to reveal themselves to be a sociopath who thinks the postal service is controlled by mice. So that was out of the way. We had the best time and I think it shows in this series. We’ve become great friends.

HBO’s upcoming limited series “Perry Mason” is rounding out its cast, which is led by Matthew Rhys in the title role.

Chris Chalk (“Gotham,” “When They See Us”) and Shea Whigham (“Homecoming”) will be series regulars. Also on board are Nate Corddry (“Mom”), Veronica Falcon (“Queen of the South”), Jefferson Mays (“I Am The Night”), Gayle Rankin (“GLOW”) and Lili Taylor (Chambers) in recurring roles.

They join “Orphan Black” Emmy winner Tatiana Maslany and “The Crown” Emmy winner John Lithgow.

The project is a reimagining of the character first created by novelist Erle Stanley Gardner. Set in 1931, Rhys stars as defense attorney Perry Mason “at a time in his life when he is living check-to-check as a low-rent private investigator. Mason is haunted by his wartime experiences in France and is suffering the effects of a broken marriage.”

While the rest of the country suffers through the Great Depression, Los Angeles is booming. When the case of the decade breaks down his door, Mason’s relentless pursuit of the truth reveals a fractured city and just maybe, a pathway to redemption for himself.

Chalk will play Paul Drake, a beat cop with a knack for detective work, while Whigham is Pete Strickland, a friend and colleague of Mason.

Corddry will portray Matthew Dodson, a grocery store owner whose young son is targeted for ransom, with Gayle Rankin as his wife Emily.

Falcon is hard-drinking speakeasy owner Lupe, while Mays is morgue attendant Virgil. Lili Taylor will play Birdy McKeegan, a devout Pentecostal church worker.
