Shannen Doherty Joins ‘Riverdale’ Tribute to Luke Perry

    Fox

“Riverdale’s” tribute to the late Luke Perry will feature a very special guest.

The Season 4 episode, which is scheduled to air October 9 on The CW, has enlisted Perry’s friend and former “Beverly Hills, 90210” co-star Shannen Doherty.  Titled “In Memoriam,” it will reflect on Perry’s legacy and the imprint his character, Fred Andrews, had on the show.

Perry died in March at the age of 52 after suffering a major stroke.

Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa announced the news at San Diego Comic-Con on Sunday. He described Doherty’s role as “very emotional.”

Perry and Doherty starred together on “90210” for four seasons. They renewed their friendship in 2015 when both were dealing with health issues.

Aguirre-Sacasa also revealed that he and Perry had been planning an appearance by Doherty for some time. It was “something that Luke wanted to happen since Season 1,” he said.

“They were such good friends, and when we were putting together this tribute episode, we wanted to make it as special as possible, and so we asked Shannen to do a pivotal, super-emotional role. She read the script and immediately said yes. It’s very impactful.”

Doherty is also starring in “BH90210,” Fox’s meta revival of the series. Most of the original cast — Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling — will play versions of themselves as they try to mount a revival of the teen soap.

Perry was not attached to the project, which was announced just before he died. “BH90210” will also honor Perry in some way.

  • Shannen Doherty Officially Joins ‘BH90210’

    Shannen Doherty Officially Joins ‘BH90210’

    Paramount Network

“Yes it’s official,” Shannen Doherty says about joining the “Beverly Hills 90210” revival series, which is now being called “BH90210.”

As she joked on Instagram, “The real question is…. will we still be rocking those [dated ’90s] outfits?”

She joins original cast members Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling. She, along with the rest of the cast, will executive produce the series. It’s set to air this summer on Fox.

The revival is being described as a serialized drama in which the cast will play heightened versions of themselves. The gang is reunited when (fancy that!) one of them suggests it’s time for a “Beverly Hills, 90210” reboot.

Luke Perry, who passed away on March 4, had not yet committed to the reboot due to his commitment to “Riverdale.” The Fox series is expected to pay tribute to its late actor.

Doherty played Brenda Walsh in the original Fox series which ran from 1990 to 2000. She reprised the role in guest appearances on CW’s “90210” reboot, which aired from 2008-2013.

Doherty also appeared on the short-lived “Heathers” TV series, a reboot of the 1989 cult classic in which she played one of the mean girls named Heather.

  • Shannen Doherty Joins ‘Heathers’ Reboot in ‘Pivotal’ Role

Dear diary, the red scrunchie is back, and our favorite “mega bitch” is wearing it. Color us stoked! Shannen Doherty revealed on Instagram that she’s joining TV Land’s reboot of “Heathers,” which is now under way in Los Angeles. Doherty co-starred in the 1988 comedy classic as Heather Duke — who was initially cowed by Heather Chandler until the lead Heather’s death, and also not-so-secretly bulimic, even though bulimia was so ’87.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Doherty will be playing a “pivotal, unnamed character.” Considering the actress posted the photo above — featuring the classic red scrunchie worn by whoever is No. 1 — it’s hard to imagine she won’t still be Heather Duke. Doherty captioned her photo “Sneak peek from the #Heathers set….. jealous much? @tvland,” giving us flashbacks to…

    … and …

There’s really no topping the original croquet set, and TV Land doesn’t really seem to be trying. The new show changes the Heathers dynamic in a more modernized story. This time, THR reported, the popular crowd has changed significantly:

“Heather McNamara (originally played by Lisanne Falk) is a black lesbian played by Jasmine Mathews; Heather Duke is a male who identifies as gender-queer whose real name is Heath (played by Brendan Scannell); and Heather Chandler (Kim Walker) has a body like Martha Dumptruck and will be played by Melanie Field. Newcomers James Scully and Grace Victoria Cox star as J.D. and Veronica, respectively.”

What’s their damage? We’ll have to wait for more details to find out. But it’s great to see Doherty back in action after being diagnosed with breast cancer, which she’s been battling since 2015. Let the power of the red scrunchie give you strength!

  • ‘90210’ Stars Share Funny, Angry, Juicy Reactions to ‘Unauthorized’ Story

The best part of Lifetime’s “Unauthorized” TV show takedowns is the reaction of the real cast members. Over the weekend, the network took on “Beverly Hills 90210” and the actors weren’t too impressed. However, they had different ways of “honoring” the big event. Tori Spelling used the attention to promote “Celebrity Lie Detector,” and said she had a fling with Jason Priestley, who responded online. Shannen Doherty, not surprisingly, had a terse reaction to how she was portrayed. Jason dissed the Lifetime show and Tori’s “Lie Detector,” but supported Shannen.

Ian Ziering had the most fun, tweeting about inaccuracies during the special, sharing old photos, and ending with the perfect assessment of the whole thing:

..#unauthorized90210 Your mother and I are very disappointed. No Mondale for a week

A photo posted by Ian Ziering (@ianziering) on

In case you don’t know, that’s Mr. and Mrs. Walsh, and Mondale was Brandon’s beloved first car. Here are more great tweets from Ian, who kept a good sense of humor about the whole thing (which is fitting, since he’s also in the cheese-fest of “Sharknado”):

Shannen, who wasn’t given the kindest of treatments, used some salty words to share her displeasure:

Jason admitted to getting a bit nostalgic and started answering some fan Qs about the show, and other things. He also retweeted and responded to people who bashed the Unauthorized story, so it’s not like he was a fan. And he also weighed in on Tori Spelling’s whole lie detector thing, which was happening around the same time. They slept together? #goodgossip:

These Lifetime stories may be kind of ridiculous, but they prompt the real stars to share real feelings about what actually happened …. so it’s all worth it?

  • Shannen Doherty Goes Full Diva in ‘Unauthorized Beverly Hills, 90210’ Clip

Never mind Hurricane Joaquin. The real hot mess headed our way this weekend is Lifetime’ s “Unauthorized Beverly Hills, 90210 Story,” which premieres Saturday night. Expect Twitter to be brutal. But we already love it, especially after watching the exclusive clip TVLine shared.

    Watch it here.

We see “Shannen Doherty” (Samantha Munro) living up to her diva reputation, demanding that she wear a certain red dress for a photo shoot. (How “Heathers” of her.) Meanwhile, Jennie Garth (Abbie Cobb) argues that it’s her turn to wear red.

The clip starts with Shannen saying it’s not up for debate. She’s wearing the dress. Tori Spelling (Abby Ross) asks why Shannen gets to be the one to wear it. “Because I’m No. 1 on the call sheet,” Shannen replies. “What’s so hard to understand here? If either one of you is No. 1 on the call sheet, you get to wear the red dress.” Jennie keeps pushing for it, saying she doesn’t want to wear black again. “You wore red last year, Shannen.” Shannen shoots back, “Exactly. And we were a hit!” Tori tries to drop the mic by saying she’s showing up to the shoot in a red dress anyway. Shannen vows that NO ONE is showing up in the same color as her.

No idea how much of this is really true to life and how much is pure fiction. Either way, it’s gold. And now we want to find a red dress to wear as we watch the drama play out.

  • Shannen Doherty Has Breast Cancer

18th Annual Webby Awards - ArrivalsFormer “Beverly Hills, 90210” star Shannen Doherty has breast cancer, the actress has confirmed.

In a statement to People, Doherty, 44, revealed her diagnosis, discussing the disease for the first time publicly.

“Yes, I have breast cancer, and I am currently undergoing treatment,” Doherty’s statement said. “I am continuing to eat right, exercise and stay very positive about my life. I am thankful to my family, friends and doctors for their support and, of course, my fans who have stood by me.”

Doherty’s diagnosis was first reported by TMZ, which earlier this week posted a details of lawsuit filed by the actress claiming that her former business manager — the firm Tanner, Mainstain, Glynn & Johnson — mishandled her finances, including failing to pay her health insurance premiums and causing her insurance to lapse. During the time when she was not receiving medical care, the suit claims, Doherty developed breast cancer, which went untreated and undiagnosed until March of this year, when doctors “discovered that she had invasive breast cancer metastatic to at least one lymph node.”

According to the lawsuit, Doherty “was informed that her cancer had spread during 2014 (when she was uninsured) … [and] was also informed that, had she been insured and able to visit her doctor, the cancer could potentially have been stopped, thus obviating the need for future treatment (including mastectomy and chemotherapy) that [Doherty] will likely have to suffer through now.”

A representative for Tanner Mainstain released its own statement to People in response to Doherty’s claims. It said:

Tanner Mainstain is saddened to learn that Ms. Doherty is suffering from cancer and wishes her a full recovery. However, the claim that Tanner Mainstain caused her to be uninsured, prevented her from seeking medical care, or somehow contributed to her cancer is patently false. Tanner Mainstain will aggressively defend all of Ms. Doherty’s claims in court.

Here’s wishing Doherty well in her treatment and recovery.
