Showtime isn’t done with the Gallaghers, and they’re (mostly) not done with it.

“Shameless” has officially been renewed once again — this time for Season 10. The network made the announcement during a TCA presentation Thursday, Deadline reports. Additionally, Showtime revealed that original cast member Cameron Monaghan (Ian Gallagher) will return after briefly exiting during Season 9. Perhaps that means his character is getting out of prison.

While Emmy Rossum opted not to renew her contract and will depart at the end of Season 9, the rest of the Gallagher family will continue. William H. Macy, Ethan Cutkosky, Emma Kenney, Jeremy Allen White, and Christian Isaiah are all locked in for more episodes. They’ll start shooting Season 10 later this year.

“Shameless” is Showtime’s longest-running original series, and the show’s 10th season brings it closer to the 11 reached by the British version.

“Shameless” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Showtime, with the next new episode set for Feb. 10.

The Gallagher clan is never boring.

With “Shameless” Season 9 soon to return from its midseason break, Showtime released a new trailer on Thursday, Jan. 10. It shows more of the Gallagers and their friends, and as usual, there is a lot going on. One big development is that Frank (William H. Macy) gets a chance to become a dad again, and not everyone thinks it is a good idea.

Given that Frank has six kids already and they’ve got some issues — just ask them — they have some serious concerns about the idea of him having another child. The trailer shows a family discussion about it, and the young Gallaghers remind their dad of their own problems. Apparently, he managed to forget that he didn’t support them.

    Watch below.

Season 9 is set to be the last with star Emmy Rossum (Fiona), as she has decided to move on. Still, the family will have plenty to keep viewers occupied once she’s gone, whether or not there’s a new baby to help fill the hole.

“Shameless” returns Sunday, Jan. 20 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Showtime.

Another Gallagher sibling is leaving the South Side.

“Shameless” star Cameron Monaghan, who plays Ian, revealed that this Sunday’s episode will be his last on the Showtime dramedy. His departure comes several weeks after lead Emmy Rossum’s announcement that she is exiting the series.

“I have been a series regular on this show for roughly ten years. I was the tender age of fifteen when we shot the pilot, and I came of age in so many ways, both legally and personally,” he wrote in an Instagram post.

He added, “This role has been a joy to inhabit, a wild and special ride, and I’d like to thank #Shameless as well as you, the viewers, for being there with him.”

Over the course of the series, Ian has struggled with bipolar disease (which also afflicted his mother) and become a leader in Chicago’s young gay community. In the current ninth season, Ian has been facing jail time for leading an uprising in which he was dubbed “Gay Jesus.” In last week’s episode, he pled guilty by reason of insanity.

Monaghan’s post indicated that he’s open to return for guest appearances.  “Goodbye, Ian Clayton Gallagher. We’ll meet again?” he wrote.

Despite the exit of two Gallagher siblings, “Shameless” showrunner John Wells has said the series could continue into a (as yet unordered) 10th season  and beyond. Co-lead William H. Macy is still on board.

“There are a lot more Gallagher stories to tell,” Wells said.

Emmy Rossum Announces She’s Leaving ‘Shameless’

“Shameless” star Emmy Rossum is leaving the Showtime series after the upcoming ninth season.

The actress made the surprise announcement via a Facebook post. She has played Fiona Gallagher, the oldest sibling of a rambunctious Chicago family, since 2011.

“The opportunity to play Fiona has been a gift. There are few characters — female or otherwise — as layered and dynamic,” Rossum wrote.

She continued, “I knew it the second I read the pilot script, this was different, this was special.”

“Shameless” Season 9 premieres September 9 and will air in two parts. The first part will conclude with a midseason finale October 21. The second part will premiere Jan. 20, 2019.

In 2016, Rossum stood firm in salary negotiations with producers Warner Bros. Television to put her on par with fellow lead William H. Macy. She ultimately a deal that made Seasons 8 and 9 possible.

Even though Season 9 has yet to roll out, Rossum alluded to the show’s ongoing future, one that will not have Fiona Gallagher in it.

“I know you will continue on without me, for now. There is much more Gallagher story to be told. I will always be rooting for my family. Try not to think of me as gone, just think of me as moving down the block.”

  • ‘Shameless’ Renewed for Season 9 at Showtime

Showtime isn’t shy about its love for longrunning series “Shameless”: The network has renewed the dramedy for a ninth season.

The premium cable outlet announced the renewal on Wednesday, noting in a press release that despite its long run — at an age when most series are shedding viewers — “Shameless” is still going strong in season eight.

“As challenging as it can be for any show simply to maintain viewers in the current TV landscape, ‘Shameless’ is adding them in droves,” said David Nevins, president and CEO of Showtime, in a statement. “But it’s no mystery why. The series’ reputation for rich and resonant characters and for deep—and deeply twisted—comedy has drawn not only faithful longtime viewers, but a steadily growing audience. And creatively, the season that kicked off this past Sunday is stronger than ever.”

“Shameless” stars William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum as two members of the dysfunctional Gallagher family. It remains Showtime’s highest-rated comedy, as well as one of its longest-running series.

“We are so grateful to Showtime for giving us the opportunity to continue making ‘Shameless,’” said series executive producer and showrunner John Wells in a statement. “It’s a labor of love (and a blast) for all of us.”

  • ‘Shameless’ Star Emmy Rossum Reacts to Her Equal Pay Dispute Going Public

“Shameless” fans supported her fight for more pay after seven seasons of making much less than fellow lead William H. Macy. Her quest was successful, and Rossum told The Hollywood Reporter that Macy was actually her biggest champion through the process.

The subject came up deep into THR‘s Comedy Actress Roundtable, featuring Rossum, America Ferrera, Pamela Adlon, Minnie Driver, Kathryn Hahn, and Issa Rae. Rossum had been expecting questions about her “Shameless” contract talks, although not all of her fellow actresses had heard about it. Driver asked if her negotiations became a big problem. “I wouldn’t say it was acrimonious,” Rossum answered, “but after a very, very long kind of stalemate negotiation, it became public.

Driver continued, asking if the other side was trying to shame her. Rossum answered:

“I don’t pretend to know anybody else’s motivations, nor do I really care, because in the end, [everything turned] out just fine. But when we started the show, obviously Bill Macy was the green light for the show. It’s Bill Macy. He’s an Oscar nominee, and I was 22 years old. And then as the show started to really have legs … It felt a little bit more weighted in Fiona’s direction. And I started to take on a directing hat and take a leadership role. So something that at one time felt OK that it was unbalanced started to feel not as good.”

She said she waited for her contract to be up, then said, “I’ve loved my experience and I’m so happy and so proud and everything, but I just want this to be right if we’re going to keep going.”

THR asked about the feedback she got. Rossum said:

“It wasn’t public for a long time when it was going on. And when it was finally public, it kind of took me aback. But as it was happening, I’ll tell you the person who supported me the most was William H. Macy. To have the man counterpart on my show be like, ‘Yes, she does deserve this and more’ was so validating. And after it became public, it was a quick resolution.”

Adlon brought up how Suzanne Somers went through that with “Three’s Company” but it didn’t work for her and they fired her. These are different times (thankfully) and it seemed to help Rossum to have her dispute made public, whether that was done by a member of her own team or someone else.

The whole roundtable conversation is fascinating, and covers many topics, so check it out.

Showtime picked up “Shameless” for Season 8, with 12 new episodes going into production in 2017 for a premiere date to be named later.

  • Showtime Officially Renews ‘Shameless’ for Season 8

“Shameless” never seemed to be in danger of cancellation this year, but fans will be relieved to know that the dramedy series has officially been renewed.

Showtime made it pretty clear that Season 8 was coming in Sunday night’s Season 7 finale, but the premium network removed any possible doubt Monday with the official announcement. Season 8 is slated to kick off production in May and premiere later in 2017. That means we’ll get another 12 episodes of hilarious missteps, conflict, and quirks.

The show will continue to star William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum, both of whom are getting raises, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Rossum, in particular, will be seeing a bigger paycheck — she got execs to agree to a deal that makes up for years of being paid less than her male co-star. Rossum and Macy have starred on the show since the beginning, playing two members of the large and dysfunctional Gallagher family.

The show’s seventh season brought in its highest ratings to date, so we’ll see if Season 8 can top them come 2017.

  • ‘Shameless’ Fans Back Emmy Rossum in Showtime Showdown for Equal Pay

    Show Fiona the money!

There’s no shame in “Shameless.” There is shame, however, in a network failing to give its lead actress lead pay.

Rossum’s Fiona Gallagher is the main character of “Shameless,” but — according to The Hollywood Reporter — she has always been paid less than co-star William H. Macy, who plays Frank. That made sense at first, since Macy came into the show with an Oscar nomination, a longer resume, and more recognition as an actor. But now that Rossum has paid her dues for 84 episodes, and she knows that Fiona is more of a cornerstone of the show than Frank, she is holding out for more.

As THR reports, Rossum is not only seeking equal pay with Macy, “multiple sources” claim “she is taking the position she should be paid more per-episode than Macy makes after years of earning much less than her Emmy-nominated co-star.” Yep. If this were Season 2, maybe they could raise their eyebrows at such a “demand,” but the series is going into Season 8. It probably won’t be around for much longer, but she is arguably the No. 1 reason it has lasted this long. No disrespect to WHM — everyone loves him, but this isn’t even about him or about pitting him against Rossum. It’s about producers/networks being fair.

However, Showtime hasn’t even officially announced Season 8 yet, ’cause they are still negotiating. THR said Rossum’s pay standoff is holding up a possible eighth season. “Sources say if Rossum closes her deal, producer WBTV then will renegotiate with the remainder of the cast, including Jeremy Allen White (Lip), Cameron Monaghan (Ian) and Steve Howey (Kevin). If she can’t close a deal, Showtime could choose to renew the show without her or cancel it.”

It seems unfair to put this on her shoulders, as if it’s her fault that things are delayed or that the show could end. No one is asking for a handout here.

Based on THR’s comments, and those at other sites and Twitter, most fans are on Rossum’s side. As one commenter wrote:

“The fact that she ‘has to’ demand it is the problem. She IS more of a lead, she has more screentime, she has more prominent storylines, she is featured simply MORE. I can imagine a Shameless without the great, brilliant and wonderful Macy but I honestly cannot without Rossum who, in my book, IS (the heart of) the show. Give her what she asks for, Showtime, and feel aSHAMEd (pun intended) that you put her in a situation where she even had to ask for equal pay in the first place. In this day and age the story and the headline really shouldn’t be ‘Actress demanding equal pay’, it should be ‘Network refusing to give equal pay to female lead of their flagship comedy’. I don’t think the media realises how much they contribute to this issue and not in a good way.”

That’s true. She shouldn’t have to “demand” anything and putting it that way does make it easy for people to see her as the problem instead of The Powers That Be. Thankfully, more people are backing her. But they aren’t the ones holding the purse strings.

  • ‘Shameless’ Season 7 Sneak Peek Teases New Beginnings for the Gallaghers

    Shameless

Your favorite neighbors, the Gallaghers, are back this fall — and maybe they won’t be as dysfunctional as usual. Nah, they totally will be!

“Shameless.” And as Cameron Monaghan, who plays Ian, teases, “The theme of the season is new beginnings, but of course, this is ‘Shameless,’ so we’ll see how far that actually goes.”

When we last saw the Gallaghers, Fiona (Emmy Rossum) was set to marry Sean (Dermot Mulroney), but her father Frank (William H. Macy) busted up the wedding by revealing that Sean was using drugs again. At the end of the finale, the kids banded together and threw him into the icy Chicago river.

Clearly, Frank survives, but he decides he needs a new family. Meanwhile, Fiona has sworn off men, Debbie (Emma Kenney) is a kleptomaniac, Ian is questioning sexuality, and Lip (Jeremy Allen White) emerges from rehab with determination to make something of himself.

“Shameless” Season 7 premieres Sunday, October 2 at 9 p.m. on Showtime.
