Hollywood can’t stop, won’t stop making science fiction movies.
From “Star Trek” to “Star Wars,” studios will boldly go to that galaxy far, far away as long as audiences are willing to pay for it. And while PG-13 genre fare tends to sell more tickets, movie fans also turn out for titles rated “R.” (See the “Alien” and “Terminator” franchises.)
As Ryan Reynolds gets his body swap on in the new R-rated “Self/Less,” here are 17 must-see films for the must-be-17-or-older crowd.

The adorable Ryan Reynolds has been acting since he was a kid, charming audiences from the moment he appeared in the “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” movie back in 1996. (Yes, we’ve seen it and it is glorious.) The actor got his big break in “Van Wilder,” and has taken on indies and blockbusters throughout his career so far. Now he’s starring in “Self/less,” which hits theaters Friday, July 10. Let’s take a look back this Canadian treasure through the years.
The quest to live forever has captured our collective imagination for centuries, from ancient texts in the time of Alexander the Great to current sci-fi movies. But as a scientist notes in the trailer for “Selfless,” “Immortality has some side effects.”
That proves to be quite the understatement. In the movie, Ben Kingsley plays an aging, brilliant billionaire who wants to extend his life. He’s offered that chance by a scientist (Matthew Goode), who’s developed a procedure that would transfer Kingsley’s mind into a much younger body – that of Ryan Reynolds.
But after the seemingly successful procedure, things start to go awry (natch), as Reynolds’ consciousness battles that of Kingsley’s for ultimate control.
“Selfless” opens in theaters this summer.
