  • The 15 Best (and Worst) Horror Movies of the ’90s

    %Slideshow-331336%
In addition to spoiling us with Taz and Bugs shirts and Rockapella, the 1990s also gave us something we didn’t know we needed: Good horror movies.

In fact, some of them were outright great, as the decade saw the slasher genre get an infusion of meta-goodness (thanks, “Scream“) — while high-concept efforts like “Seven” and “Blair Witch” brought audiences to the edge of their seats with multiple repeat viewings.

But there’s a flip side to that coin — the influx of decent slasher flicks also brought a ton of “Scream” clones, along with some really, really bad attempts at cinema.

With Halloween right around the corner, we’ve ranked and filed the 15 best (and worst) horror films from one of our favorite decades.

  • Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox Remember Horror Master Wes Craven

    neve

Neve Campbell, who starred in all of the Wes Craven-directed “Scream” movies, on Monday remembered the horror master, who died at age 76 after a battle with brain cancer.

“We lost a great deal of magic yesterday. I’m devastated to hear of Wes’s passing,” she says in a statement to EW.com. “My life wouldn’t be what it is without him. I will be forever grateful for his brilliant direction, his wicked sense of humor and his consummate kindness and friendship. He has entertained us all for decades and inspired so many to follow in his path. I loved Wes dearly and will miss him always. Thank you Wes!!!”

Other “Scream” stars, including Courteney Cox, Rose McGowan and Skeet Ulrich, paid tribute to filmmaker, who also created the “A Nightmare on Elm Street” franchise.

  • RIP Wes Craven: Celebrities Pay Tribute to ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ Director

Horror king Wes Craven died Sunday, August 30 after a battle with brain cancer. He was 76.

Craven brought Freddy Krueger to life in “Nightmare on Elm Street,” found a new audience with the “Scream” franchise, and also gave us “The Last House on the Left” and “The Hills Have Eyes,” among others.

He helped launch or re-launch the careers of many Hollywood stars, and influenced countless others, and several celebrities paid tribute to the film legend after his passing:

Edgar Wright — director of “Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz,” and “The World’s End” — wrote a sweet tribute on his website. It’s quite lengthy, including posters and film clips, but here’s the very end:

I am thankful for the many movies he left behind, for my tiny part in his last completed film and happy to have got to tell him how much I enjoyed and was inspired by his work. He was a true maestro of genre and a class act.

Rest In Peace, Wes. We willingly give you full permission to haunt our waking dreams forever.”

  • The 23 Scariest Teen Horror Movies Ever, Ranked

    %Slideshow-303646%
Horror filmmakers have a special fondness for shedding teenage blood.

After all, teens are horror’s primary audience, so it’s especially frightening — and cathartic — to see teens like themselves targeted by deadly evil, often just for behaving like normal adolescents. In the last four decades, movies about teens targeted by slashers have become the mainstay of movie horror.

With “The Gallows” hitting theaters this Friday — a teen horror movie with echoes of “Carrie,” “Prom Night,” “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” and more — it’s worth looking back at some of the most celebrated teen horror movies of all time. Just remember, don’t separate from the group, and don’t have sex.

  • Here’s the New Ghostface Mask From MTV’s ‘Scream’ Series

A new take on the “Scream” franchise calls for a new take on its iconic Ghostface mask, and that’s just what the upcoming MTV series has in store.

Entertainment Weekly shared a first look at the mask that will grace the face of the new, kept-under-wraps-for-now villain on the series, and while it’s quite different from the Ghostface that “Scream” fans already know, that’s entirely the point.

“The [original] mask is so iconic,” explained executive producer Jaime Paglia in an interview with EW. “If you were to have that mask in a television series, but you weren’t following any of the characters [from the original], I believe that would be misleading the audience.”

Instead, this new mask is its own entity — while also purposefully calling to mind some other classic horror villains. As executive producer Jill Blotevogel tells EW, in addition to evoking the spirit of the original Ghostface, it’s also meant to mimic Jason’s hockey mask from the “Friday the 13th” franchise, as well as Michael Myers’s stark white look from “Halloween.”

And original “Scream” mastermind Wes Craven, who’s also serving as another executive producer on the series, alluded to EW that the new disguise “ties into the story” of the series, though he declined to elaborate.

Check out the chilling image of the new mask below. “Scream” begins on MTV on June 30.
