  • ‘Scandal’ Fans Disappointed & Confused at How Series Finale Was Handled

“Scandal” went “Over a Cliff” with its April 19 series finale, and Gladiators still have so many questions. For one, did Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) become president or not?

    SPOILER ALERT

While some fans were pleased with the Season 7 finale, or at least certain scenes (Papa Pope!), there were many frustrations with the hour episode. The fact that it was only one hour was one complaint. The fact that David Rosen died and Cyrus did not was another.

David ultimately died for nothing. It was especially upsetting to see David make the stupid decision to trust Cyrus. Of course Cyrus was going to poison his drink! Jake went to jail, but Olivia and team were spared. Olivia and Fitz had a little end scene meeting, but it wasn’t shown if they ended up together or not. The final scene with the portrait also confused fans — was that a flash-forward of Olivia as president or what?

As The Hollywood Reporter noted, Shonda Rhimes will not be answering these questions any time soon:

“So post-B613, did Olivia wind up with her fairy tale ending with Fitz and a lifetime of making jam in Vermont? The end of the series featured Olivia’s portrait in the National Portrait Gallery — leaving viewers to decide for themselves if Olivia would wind up becoming president or was rewarded for her role in cleaning up D.C.’s corruption and becoming the ultimate fixer. (A nice touch: Rhimes’ daughter, Harper, was the young girl left looking up at the portrait, which said “We the People” along its side.)

As Rhimes warned, the finale also left that and a few other storylines open for viewers to interpret on their own as Scandal jumped forward following the conclusion of the B613 trial. Rhimes and producers have no immediate plans of discussing how the series ultimately ended and intentionally wanted to leave the audience to determine the show’s ultimate takeaway about politics in D.C.”

Fan reactions were all over the map, but there was a general sense of the finale being anticlimactic:

“Scandal” did have quite a run. It’s the end of an era. Unless Shonda does give Papa Pope his own spinoff. Joe Morton deserves more Emmys!

  • ‘Scandal’ Cast Talks Happy Endings, Fan Support in Retrospective Video

The “Scandal” cast has already filmed the series finale, and the goodbye process is well underway.

ABC kept the emotional experience going on Wednesday when it released a retrospective. The video looks back at the drama’s seven seasons and, of course, heightens all the sentiments fans are already coping with as we approach the end of the series.

“There’s not a single feeling I haven’t had about the show ending,” Kerry Washington, who plays Olivia, says in the video.

“I think I’m sort of in denial about the final day on set,” Tony Goldwyn (Fitz) adds, presumably in an interview filmed before production wrapped.

What’s really special in the retrospective is how it highlights the cast’s bond and their gratitude for their fans. It’s clear that they credit their Gladiators for keeping the show going for so long. If you’ve stuck with “Scandal” over the years, you definitely have their thanks.

And don’t think this video overlooks our questions about how the series will conclude and whether or not we can expect happy endings. It might not offer answers, but it does tease different ways the finale could play out.

“I think Jake would like to be back on the island with Olivia,” Scott Foley says of his character and Washington’s.

“No,” Goldwyn, who plays Jake’s romantic rival, says. “I think Olivia’s one true love is Fitz.”

    Watch the moving retrospective below.

“Scandal” airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC, with the finale set for April 19.

  • ‘Scandal’ Stars Flooded Twitter With Photos, Feelings on Final Day of Filming

“Scandal” did not gentle into that good night; the ABC drama went out with an outpouring of tweets from its emotional cast.

Season 7 production wrapped early in the morning of March 17, and the stars of “Scandal” spent the day sharing their thoughts, feelings, and photos on Twitter. Kerry Washington, who starred as ultimate crisis manager Olivia Pope for all seven seasons, tweeted several times over the course of the day. She shared multiple photos with Tony Goldwyn, her co-star and on-and-off onscreen love, and then later wrote that she was “overwhelmed with gratitude.”

Meanwhile, other cast members chimed in, too. There were more heartfelt thank yous, emojis, and nostalgic words than we can count. Essentially, everyone wanted to commemorate what was surely a bittersweet moment.

It wasn’t just the cast emoting and reminiscing. “Scandal” creator Shonda Rhimes also tweeted out a message, writing in part, “A lot of tears. A lot of love. Forever grateful for every second.”

    What a way to go.

The “Scandal” series finale airs April 5 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.

  • Here’s How ‘Scandal,’ ‘HTGAWM’ Crossover Will Deal With the Liza Weil Conflict

We’ve been seeing a lot of TV show crossovers lately, but they don’t always blend smoothly together. Sometimes, there’s a sticky situation to handle, like in the case of the upcoming crossover episodes of “Scandal” and “How to Get Away With Murder.”

The problem lies in the fact that actress Liza Weil has appeared in both series. Before her days of starring as Bonnie Winterbottom in “HTGAWM,” she had a recurring role in “Scandal” Season 1. Weil played Amanda Tanner, a former White House intern who claimed to have had an affair with the president. In a crazy turn of events, she was murdered, so although there’s no need for her to play two roles in the crossover, it would still be awkward if the “Scandal” characters came into contact with Amanda’s doppelganger. Not surprisingly, though, Shondaland has a plan.

When the crossover episodes air, we won’t see Weil appear at all in the “Scandal” episode, EW reports. Not only that, the show’s writers avoided putting Bonnie in any scenes with the “Scandal” characters during the “HTGAWM” episode. That way, there will be no need to address the fact that the attorney looks exactly like the ill-fated intern, which is probably for the best. Instead, we’ll get “black girl magic on steroids,” according to Viola Davis, whose character, Annalise Keating, will interact with Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington).

The two-hour crossover event will air Thursday, March 1 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

  • First Look at ‘Scandal,’ How to Get Away With Murder’ Crossover

47th NAACP Image Awards - ArrivalsOlivia Pope, meet Annalise Keating … and admire each other’s ginormous handbags.

“Scandal” and “How to Get Away With Murder,” two of ABC’s TGIT shows produced by Shonda Rhimes.

In the photo, Olivia (Kerry Washington) and Annalise (Viola Davis) look very serious as they enter what appears to be a glass-walled conference room. Both are carrying very large handbags (their signature accessories).

“It was black girl magic on steroids!” Davids told EW. “Me and Kerry dancing to ‘Rock the Boat’? Hey, it can’t get any better.”

“I really love Viola,” Washington added. “I have such immense respect and admiration for her.”

Scandal HTGAWMNot much is known about the crossover’s plot, but it’s likely to do with Annalise’s big class-action lawsuit against the state of Pennsylvania for negligence by the public defenders office. Perhaps Olivia and President Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young) get involved, or the gladiators are called in to help with the case. Or maybe Liv needs a bulldog lawyer to get out of some fixing scrape?

This is the first crossover between Shondaland’s shows (excepting between “Grey’s Anatomy” and its spinoff, “Private Practice”). It airs Thursday, March 1 on ABC.

  • ‘Scandal,’ ‘How to Get Away With Murder’ Crossover Is in the Works, So 2018 Is Already Better

    Olivia Pope, meet Annalise Keating.

A “Scandal” / “How to Get Away With Murder” crossover episode is in the works at ABC and Shondaland, according to Deadline. It would air sometime later this season (“Scandal” is in its seventh and final season, “HTGAWM” is in its fourth).

“Scandal” star Kerry Washington and “HTGAWM” Emmy winner Viola Davis both teased the crossover in Instagram posts. In both pics, the actresses are posing on the other’s set.

Hey Ms @violadavis ❤️ check it out. This spot look familiar?! Where are you?

A post shared by Kerry Washington (@kerrywashington) on

Hey @KerryWashington, guess where I am?!

A post shared by Viola Davis (@violadavis) on

And Rhimes herself confirmed the news with a sneak peek at a script from the event:

This would mark the first crossover among the Shondaland TGIT shows. Although they often appear together in ABC promos, the cast members have never guest starred on each other’s shows.

But crossovers are frequent for other shows with the same executive producer (a la Dick Wolf’s “Law & Order” and One Chicago series) or networks (the CW’s DC Comics shows).

So, what could the crossover entail? Well, on “HTGAWM,” Annalise has embarked on a major class action lawsuit against Pennsylvania state for negligence in the public defender’s office. Perhaps Olivia gets the White House involved? Or Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) does, since he is interested in criminal justice reform?

Our biggest question: What about Meredith Grey?! Can’t she stop by to, uh, do some medical stuff on the East Coast?

All three TGIT shows return with new episodes January 18.

  • Joe Morton’s ‘T2’ Memories, ‘Scandal’ Farewell, and ‘Justice League’ Hopes

Portraits From ABC Television Group's All-Star Cocktail Reception and Interview Opportunity During the 2017 TCA Summer Press TouTwenty-six years ago, Joe Morton‘s on-screen alter ego was being hunted by a powerful cyborg recruited to save the world. In a nice bit of synchronicity, before the end of this year the actor’s film persona will be mentoring his son, a powerful cyborg, to save the world.

There have been plenty of roles in between his turn as Skynet’s inadvertent creator Miles Bennett Dyson in “Scandal” — but Morton remembers well what a significant boost that James Cameron‘s muscular mega-hit gave to his career.

With that landmark film — long considered one of the best action films ever made, a rare sequel that topped its high-concept original and a quantum leap forward for early digital effects — about to be released in 3D in AMC theaters across the country Aug. 25 (along with 3D and 4K home video editions arriving this fall), Morton joined Moviefone to reflect on the making of the movie and the impact it had on him, as well as to provide glimpses ahead into the forthcoming final season of “Scandal” and his place in the DC Extended Universe.

Moviefone: When you made “Terminator 2,” you had already done your share of acting work in film, television, and on stage. But what was the eye-opening, very different thing that you found while you were making this particular movie?

Joe Morton: I think the first thing that impressed me was I’d never worked on a film quite that large before. I was coming from “Brother From Another Planet,” which was basically a $360,000 budget. To suddenly walk into a film that’s budgeted for millions, that was pretty impressive to me.

Just before we finished shooting my death scene, for instance, James decided that he wanted to take a look at something, with no cameras on. The scene that follows my eye as Linda [Hamilton] crawls across to the other side of the laboratory, and the SWAT team blows out the windows with their machine guns. He blew out those windows with no cameras running, simply so he could see what it looked like. And I thought that was very impressive. I had never been around that kind of expenditure before.Miles Dyson, in a lot of ways, is the most human and the most relatable character that we get in the movie. How did you find your way into him? Was there a reference point that helped your understanding of him?

The first thing that James did is he gave us a whole bunch of material for artificial intelligence. And then, as you say, because he is sort of the most human character, it was fairly simple just to sort of navigate through what happens to him. He’s leading kind of a normal life. He’s awe-inspired by the machinery that’s he’s either developed or discovered.

Then suddenly, these people invade his home, only to discover that these invaders are in fact what he’s been researching, in terms of Arnold’s character. It was a pretty straightforward kind of thing, where you realize, where this character realizes what science is capable of, what it will do if he allows it to grow, and what he has to stop.

Was the movie a game-changer for you, career-wise?

I think it certainly helped. I wasn’t that well-established. “The Brother From Another Planet” had happened, and a couple of other films had happened. I was doing a television series at the time, which was fairly popular.

Yes, I felt as if I was on my way up, and certainly, “Terminator 2” was a huge lift, if you will. It was seen around the world…I can’t tell you the number of people who walk up to me during the course of a particular day and talk about how much they love “Terminator 2.”

It was obviously a huge hit at the time, but when did you start to get a sense that it was a movie for the ages — one that people were going to watch over and over again for who knows how long?

I’m not sure when that actually hit me. The fact that it was an enormous success, I think it was several days after the movie opened. I was on the Third Street Promenade, and a bunch of guys ran out of a restaurant, The Beanery, and ran out to compliment me on the death scene in “Terminator 2.” That was shocking. That had never happened to me before. People had come up and said they saw my work and they liked my work, but to come up and talk to me about a specific scene, that was something new and different…My son and I were once sort of surrounded by a whole bunch of kids who had just seen the movie. So I think it was around all that time that I realized, “Oh, maybe this is a big one.”

It’s nice to have a hit, and it’s really nice to have something catch fire in pop culture, which you had a second time around with “Scandal,” in particular. Here you are about to see it go off into the sunset. What has that experience meant to you to have “Scandal” come at this point in your career?

“Scandal” has just been amazing, from all kinds of perspectives. The writers are just astounding. The cast itself – we’re very lucky in that we are a group of people who really and truly enjoy working with one another.

I know you may hear that from lots of actors, but this is actually true! This group of people actually enjoys working with one another. All of us are theater actors, and so we speak the same language when it comes to working a script. It’s just been great. And career-wise, one could not ask for anything more. After my first full season on the show, I was honored with an Emmy. So obviously, “Scandal” has been an enormous deal in my life.

Protecting secrets as you must, tell me a little bit about your experience making this final season. Give me a little of your perspective on bringing everything to a close.

The emotions are running very high. It’s like when you’re doing a play, and you know that tonight, for instance, is closing night. So you think, “Every time I speak a line from this play will be the last time I’ll speak this line.” So I think that’s kind of where we’re at with “Scandal.”

We know that this season, every time we go through an episode, every time we go through a scene, that we know that will be the last time that kind of thing will happen with this show. So my feeling is that, by the time we get to the last episode of Season 7, people are going to be kind of filled with all kinds of emotions.

What was it about this character that fascinated you as the actor playing him, all the way to the end? What kind of kept you excited about being him?

The only thing I knew originally was that I was going to be introduced as Olivia’s father. So that in itself was exciting. At that point, it wasn’t clear to me where they were going to take the character. So I wasn’t quite sure, until the beginning of Season 3, when Shonda [Rhimes] wrote that incredible monologue about the “hell and the high water.” I thought, Oh, if this is the guy, then this is going to be a lot of fun. Someone who knows how to use language the way he does, someone who deals with the kind of power that he does.

And it was a day-to-day learning experience, because, you know, they don’t tell us anything until we actually sit down at a table read. That’s how we know what’s going to happen next. So for a little while, it was really just kind of learning on the job, if you will, about who this guy was, depending on what they gave me to do, and all of those incredible scenes with Olivia out in the park sort of gave me the answers that I was looking for.

Many people are very excited to see you show up in “Justice League.” Why was that something that you were excited to do? I know there’s been some tweaking, but what can you say about the storyline between the Stones?

The thing I love about “Justice League” is: one, it’s not only interstellar, if you will, it’s global. It goes all over the world. The particular storyline that I’m involved in, which is Cyborg, I love because for Ray [Fisher], the guy who actually plays Cyborg, it’s an opportunity to talk about what it’s like to be “the other,” even if what you have to offer the world is awesome.

I think that there are lots of black people, lots of people with color, lots of women, lots of people who are considered “the other,” who can look at this character and can look at what he and I will go through together in the film, as a great metaphor for how to accept and overcome the obstacles of being “the other.”What’s your take on Silas Stone? In the comics, I know he’s been a little colder in some incarnations. He’s been a little more supportive of his son in others. Where are you coming at it from?

This is a little bit more supportive, I would think. This Silas realizes that he was not there for his son, which is the motivating force to rebuild his son, and then even after rebuilding, he’s looking for a way to teach him, not only how to use the powers that he has, but to understand how those powers can be used for the greater good.

You’re working with, on that film, two world-class filmmakers. How did that experience compare to your memories of “Terminator 2”?

Both Zack [Synder] and Joss [Whedon] are very different guys. I think that world is very different. I think that directors who make comics book [films], their sort of approach to shooting is a lot lighter, is a lot more laid back, a lot more collaborative. Whereas I think when you’re doing action-adventure, and you have that kind of budget, if James is an example, the pressures sort of tend to find their way out in terms of you yelling at everybody else on the floor.

The couple of action-adventure directors that I’ve worked with both sort of followed that category, whereas the directors, both Joss and Zack, were very different than James in so many different ways.

  • Which TV Drama Plans to Kill Off a Popular Original Character in New Season Premiere?

Put on your spoiler thinking caps, TV fans, ’cause you have a mystery to solve.

Every so often, TVLine posts a “blind item” spoiler, teasing something that will be revealed in a few months — or whenever. It’s always vague, but they also share a few hints. This latest one is about an “hour-long drama series” on one of the “Big 5” networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, and The CW) looking “to kill one of its most popular characters (an original series regular), while tacking on a time-tripping twist straight out of ‘How to Get Away With Murder.’”

    Here’s more:

“According to sources, if the storyline is approved by The Powers That Be at the network, the character in question would be murdered in the show’s forthcoming season premiere, at which point the action would jump back two months. Subsequent episodes would continue to chronicle the eight weeks leading up to [REDACTED]’s death all while dropping clues about the party — or parties? — potentially responsible for the shocking crime.”

The suggestion that the storyline has not already been approved means 1) it *may* not happen at all, but also 2) it’s probably not for a show that already started filming for the fall season.

TVLine shared more hints by narrowing down the search to one of nine shows in its photo gallery:

    • “The Exorcist”
    • “The Blacklist”
    • “Supergirl”
    • “Blindspot”
    • “Scorpion”
    • “Designated Survivor”
    • “NCIS”
    • “Scandal”
    • “Elementary”

Fan guesses are all over the map, but some think it could be “Scandal” because the final season is coming up, and they could do a big twist like killing Fitz (or even Olivia?) and showing how it happened. Other fans think it might be “Supergirl” or “The Blacklist”or “NCIS” or “Elementary.” Or any of them! Time will tell. And time may also provide more hints, so keep checking TVLine in case they update to scratch guesses off the list.
