  • Marvel Returning to Comic-Con’s Hall H in 2019: Report

Marvel Returning to Comic-Con’s Hall H in 2019: Report

    Marvel

Our cinematic futures may become clearer during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, with Marvel returning to Hall H for the first time since 2017.

Deadline reports Marvel will return to Hall H after skipping last year, to maintain a veil of secrecy about the fate of the characters after the ending of “Avengers: Infinity War.”

The big, looming question now is: What will Marvel bring?

The studio has been tight-lipped about its lineup post-“Spider-Man: Far From Home.” Obviously, more Marvel movies are coming — they’ve booked the first weekends in May and November 2020 for untitled projects. It’s possible Marvel boss Kevin Feige will reveal those titles and its slate for the next couple of years.

The most likely footage to be shown may come from the standalone “Black Widow” movie starring Scarlett Johansson. Hall H will go nuts if the star makes an appearance with fellow cast members David Harbour and Rachel Weisz.

There may also be an introduction of the cast of “The Eternals,” including Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, and Richard Madden.

And Marvel may roll out footage from its upcoming Disney+ series, like “Loki.”

“Game of Thrones” has ended, but the cast members are not quite done with their duties. There may be one more return to Comic-Con Hall H for at least some of them, Deadline reports.

HBO is in talks with the San Diego Comic-Con organizers, according to Deadline’s sources.  The event is expected to be attended by some of the main cast members, including Kit Harington (Jon Snow). Meanwhile, George R.R. Martin, the writer of the book series that inspired the TV show, is also expected to appear. HBO has not commented.

“Game of Thrones” was last at SDCC in 2017. That was the first time the show was there ahead of a season rather than at the end of one, The San Diego Comic-Con Unofficial Blog notes. This year, the show will once again appear having finished a season. However, given the mixed reaction to the show’s final chapter, it could be a somewhat different experience. Whatever the case, we suspect it won’t be without nostalgia.

SDCC 2019 takes place July 18 to 21, so we should be hearing more about the “Game of Thrones” event soon. We’re also waiting to hear about HBO’s plans for “Westworld” — namely, if it will finally return to Comic-Con. Ah, the suspense.

  • ‘Annabelle 3′ Will Target the Warrens’ Daughter, ‘Night at the Museum’ Style

‘Annabelle 3′ Will Target the Warrens’ Daughter, ‘Night at the Museum’ Style

The “Annabelle” franchise is coming back home to torture Ed and Lorraine Warren’s daughter Judy.

“Annabelle 3” was just teased last night during the ScareDiego panel at Comic-Con.

We already knew it was coming — and taking a July 3, 2019 release date — as written and directed by Gary Dauberman, who also wrote the two previous “Annabelle” movies and “The Nun.”

The first two “Annabelle” movies were prequel spinoffs of “The Conjuring,” but this new movie will drag the paranormal investigating Warrens back into the drama.

It certainly sounds like that means Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson will star in “Annabelle 3,” since this is about the haunting of their characters’ daughter, but that was not specifically announced during the panel.

    Here’s more from Gary Dauberman:

“I’m still finalizing the script, but it really picks up with the Warrens bringing Annabelle to the place where it can really no longer wreak havoc, which is their artifact room. But, of course, it turns out she can also wreak havoc there. And she really awakens the evil within that room and they target the Warrens’ 10-year-old daughter, Judy. So, that’s the set-up.”

James Wan, who is producing the film, added this interesting comparison:

“Annabelle basically activates all the other haunted artifacts in that room. So, it’s basically ‘A Night at the Museum,’ with Annabelle!”

Sure! Let’s hope this doesn’t come down to Ben Stiller saving the day.

The great James Wan will be back later this week, of course, to debut the first “Aquaman” trailer. That’s happening Saturday. But now we know a bit more about the third “Annabelle” horror show, which for some reason is coming just in time for next year’s Independence Day. Secret meaning there?

  • First Look at ‘Westworld’ Season 2 Ups the Body Count

Even though “Westworld” Season 2 isn’t due to premiere till 2018, HBO is already teasing us with new footage.

The premium network debuted a first-look trailer during San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, and there is already more carnage, including a tiger corpse. That is not the only creepy part; blood pops up multiple times in the preview — on paper, on the floor, and on people. Not that that’s a surprise, of course.

Since the trailer comes so far in advance, the footage is fairly limited. However, we did get interesting glimpses, including of Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) gunning down people from the back of a horse as well as the Man in Black’s blood-spattered face.

“Westworld” Season 1 drew 22 Emmy nominations this year, so Season 2 will look to create similar success. Settle in, though, because it’s going to be a long wait till the show returns in 2018.

  • ‘Stranger Things’ Season 2 Trailer Brings ‘Thriller’ to Hawkins

Two pop culture sensations have come together — “Stranger Things” and “Thriller.”

Netflix’s San Diego Comic-Con presentation on Saturday came with a brand new trailer for Season 2 of its hit sci-fi horror series in which the Michael Jackson song is prominently featured. However, with all the intrigue the preview offers, “Thriller” wasn’t necessary to capture our interest. Not at all.

The footage returns us to Hawkins, Indiana, where arcade games aren’t enough to distract Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) from a lingering darkness. Creepy, bizarre things are happening, and the poor kid is struggling even with the support of his friends Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo). We don’t know what the culprit is yet, of course — that’s what Season 2 is for.

Meanwhile, we don’t see anything of everyone’s favorite waffle lover Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) initially. Don’t worry, though; she pops up at the end, bloody nose and all.

“Stranger Things” Season 2 hits Netflix on Oct. 27.

  • ‘Once Upon a Time’ Season 7 Comic-Con Trailer Opens a New Book

A new story is soon to come a-knocking.

ABC unveiled the latest “Once Upon a Time” Season 7 preview at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, offering a glimpse into the show’s new book. The trailer first visits the past and Henry Mills’s beginnings, and then it swaps out the young character (Jared Gilmore) with the adult version of him. Older Henry (Andrew J. West) immediately gets a surprise when a girl named Lucy (Alison Fernandez) arrives on his doorstep claiming that she’s his daughter and his family needs help.

We don’t know what trouble has befallen them yet, but the trailer does promise a new curse. The story will feature Cinderella (Dania Ramirez), wicked stepmother Lady Tremaine (Gabrielle Anwar), and wicked stepsister Drizella (Adelaide Kane), along with Tiana (Mekia Cox), Alice (Rose Reynolds), and more.

The struggle to reach happily ever after begins again when “Once Upon a Time” returns on Friday, Oct. 6.

  • ‘Ready Player One’ Comic-Con Trailer Expands the Limits of Reality

    “Are you ready?”

That’s the questioned posed in the first trailer for “Ready Player One,” released Saturday during San Diego Comic-Con. The preview brings us to Cleveland, Ohio, in the year 2045, a time when the younger generation is known as the “missing millions” because they have nowhere left to go. However, they have one escape: the OASIS.

As described in the trailer, the OASIS is “a world where the limits of reality are your own imagination.” For our hero, Wade (Tye Sheridan), that means a lot of crazy adventures, from battles with giant creatures to zooming around in one vehicle after another. That becomes especially true when he winds up competing in a treasure hunt for the game’s late founder’s fortune.

The film is directed by Steven Spielberg and is based on the novel of the same name by Ernest Cline. The cast also includes Mark Rylance, Simon Pegg, T.J. Miller, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, and more.

“Ready Player One” is due out March 30, 2018.

  • ‘The Defenders’ Comic-Con Trailer: These Guys Didn’t Come Here to Make Superfriends

Usually it’s the reality TV villain who “didn’t come here to make friends,” but sometimes that’s even true of superheroes.

The latest trailer for “Marvel’s The Defenders,” released on Friday during San Diego Comic-Con, reveals a band of heroes that looks pretty reluctant to be working together. Even though Luke Cage (Mike Colter), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), and Danny Rand (Finn Jones) all have unique abilities, they aren’t exactly eager to become a team. Cage says it best, telling the other three, “I’m not looking for superfriends.”

The first minute of the trailer is kind of a will-they-won’t-they tease, but — shocker! — they do join forces. As we see in the preview, the four of them are “the only thing keeping Manhattan from crumbling to a pile of dust.” Those are some high stakes.

The series follows four other Marvel series for Netflix, each headlined by one of the Defenders — “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage,” and “Iron Fist.” “Marvel’s The Defenders” hits Netflix on Aug. 18.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Comic-Con Trailer: Key Character Returns to Form a New Alliance

Alliances are constantly shifting on “Game of Thrones,” and it looks like we might soon see a new one.

HBO released a new Season 7 trailer on Friday during San Diego Comic-Con, and it brings back a familiar face. In the preview, Melisandre (Carice van Houten), the Red Woman, resurfaces after being banished from the North by Jon Snow (Kit Harington). And she’s ready to work with another Iron Throne contender: Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke).

“I believe you have a role to play,” she tells the Mother of Dragons, “as does another.”

The Red Priestess was reluctant to leave Jon’s side in Season 6 given that she believes he is the prince that was promised, so now that she is getting Daenerys involved in whatever plan she has, Melisandre may be key to uniting the long-lost relatives. However, that might have interesting consequences; as the preview shows, people in the North are wary of the once-reigning family. Additionally, Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) still has Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen) in her ear, potentially complicating her relationship with Jon. We can’t wait to see how this plays out.

“Game of Thrones” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.

  • Halle Berry Proved Her Bourbon-Chugging Prowess at ‘Kingsman’ Comic-Con Panel

Comic-Con International 2017 - 20th Century FOX PanelSomeone is going to need to be Halle Berry‘s sober buddy at San Diego Comic-Con.

The “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” star was part of a panel with her co-stars on Thursday when she demonstrated that she can pound a glass of bourbon as well as any frat boy. When a bottle was being passed around, Channing Tatum got it and gave her a hefty pour. Unfazed, Berry got up and chugged her drink, surprising and entertaining the audience and her cast mates.

Luckily, there’s a video of it, thanks to USA Today writer Brian Truitt. It not only shows the actress downing her drink but also the aftermath. As Tatum bowed down to her and Pedro Pascal applauded, Berry celebrated her accomplishment, and then jokingly collapsed.

When you get a look at Tatum’s pour, you’ll be impressed, if you weren’t already; the photos show a glass that’s definitely more than half-full.

    Comic-Con International 2017 - 20th Century FOX Panel

We have a feeling Berry might regretted that later. Maybe next time she’ll heed the moderator’s warning to “drink responsibly.”
