  • End of Writers Guild Strike in Sight as Deal Struck

Hollywood –– at least, the part that relies on scripted material featuring actors –– has been largely at a standstill since May of this year, as the Writers Guild, followed, by the actors/performers union SAG-AFTRA went on strike for a better deal from the studios, as represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).

It has been 146 days since the start of the writers’ strike, but on Sunday, after a long stretch of negotiations before the weekend and through it, a deal has been agreed, at least on paper.

This doesn’t however, mean that the strike ends immediately. While picketing has been suspended by writers, the union’s members still have to vote to ratify a new three-year contract featuring the improved terms negotiated.

Assuming the guild approves the deal, the strike could be officially over by the end of the week.

    WGA speaks out

This is what the WGA’s leadership sent to members once the deal was finalized:

“What we have won in this contract — most particularly, everything we have gained since May 2nd — is due to the willingness of this membership to exercise its power, to demonstrate its solidarity, to walk side-by-side, to endure the pain and uncertainty of the past 146 days. It is the leverage generated by your strike, in concert with the extraordinary support of our union siblings, that finally brought the companies back to the table to make a deal.”

To see the full statement, go to the WGA West site.

It is also not the end of the actors’ strike –– but a deal between the writers and the AMPTP means that a path to that is now much clearer.

    What happened with the strike(s)?

The actors’ strike, which began on July 14th, follows similar action by the Writers Guild of America, the workers looking for a better deal.

The WGA went on strike on May 2nd, after its own contract ran out with the AMPTP.

Much like the Writers’ Guild, the actors’ unions had been negotiating with the AMPTP to secure a new contract. Actors have long been unhappy with reduced residuals brought about by streaming services and are displeased by studios claiming they can’t pay more while company CEOs earn millions. And roughly 12% of actors working today make the minimum required to trigger health benefits and keep their livelihoods.

Here’s SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher on the actors’ strike announcement:

“The gravity of this move is not lost on me or our negotiating committee or our board members who have voted unanimously to proceed with a strike. It’s a very serious thing that impacts thousands, if not millions, of people all across this country and around the world.”

Another key issue has been studios’ concerning efforts to bring in new technology to replace physical performers. When the strike was called yesterday, SAG-AFTRA revealed one pertinent detail of a studio offer –– digitizing the likeness of background players (or extras), paying them for one day’s work but then being able to use their image in perpetuity and however they please with no other payment.

Now, at last, it appears everyone is on a path to get back to work, which means an end to movies and TV series being delayed, a return for shows to the air and fresh development on new projects.

With the Golden Globes in the rear view, attention turned to the awards––or at least their nomination announcement––chosen exclusively by Hollywood’s acting community, the Screen Actors Guild awards.

Because of the large size of the voting body, the SAG awards tend to be a decent pointer to who could be looking at an Oscar for acting, or at the very least, a nomination.

So you’ve got to feel sorry for Tom Cruise today, as neither he nor his ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ cast made the list. Though it does seem more likely that the movie has a shot at a Best Picture nomination and plenty of technical nods at the Academy Awards, the chatter about Cruise’s performance and the warm reception for the likes of Glenn Powell and the other ‘Top Gun’ ensemble hasn’t translated into acting kudos here.

Many of the main categories are the expected batch of returning names (Cate Blanchett, Viola Davis for example) plus the breakthroughs such as ‘Elvis’ Austin Butler and ‘Till’s Danielle Deadwyler. ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’, led by cast members Brendan Gleeson, Colin Farrell, Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan, is a clear favorite and seems likely to pick up several trophies.

Also dominating categories as it has in other awards nomination list is ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’, with most of the main cast scoring nods this time. Adam Sandler is also something of a surprise, though his performance in basketball drama ‘Hustle’ has won plenty of praise.

Steven Spielberg’s ‘The Fabelmans’ was among the ensemble nods, and Paul Dano was nominated for his leading role, but there was something of a shock as Michelle Williams, whose work as a character based on the director’s mother has been both nominated and won elsewhere but didn’t even crack the nominations here.

Brendan Fraser continues to score support for his performance in ‘The Whale’, which also saw a nomination for co-star Hong Chau, but surprisingly not for its ensemble, which also includes Samantha Morton and Sadie Sink.

Conversely, ‘Babylon’ notched zero nominations for the separate likes of Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt (who have appeared on other lists) but did appear in the ensemble section. It’s perhaps telling that ‘Babylon’, which has largely fizzled at the box office, is having a quieter awards season despite being a more recent release than some of its competition.

On the TV side of the list, there were also few surprises, though Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Yellowstone’ casts are starting to make more of an impact.

But while it was good to see the nominations for ‘Better Call Saul, it remains an outright crime that Rhea Seehorn isn’t on the list for her work as Kim Wexler.

Much like the movies, there was the standard mix of people who have won plenty of awards before (Julia Garner of ‘Ozark’, for example, or the ‘Only Murders in the Building’ cast) and those whose shows are brand new ‘The Bear’, which has been an awards favorite so far.

  • 2022 SAG Awards Nominations Announced

(L to R) Jared Leto, Florence Andrews, Adam Driver, Lady Gaga, and Al Pacino in 'House of Gucci'
(L to R) Jared Leto, Florence Andrews, Adam Driver, Lady Gaga, and Al Pacino in ‘House of Gucci’

The 2022 SAG Awards nominations were announced on Wednesday by Rosario Dawson and Vanessa Hudgens via Instagram Live and there were many surprises.

In the film categories, Oscar frontrunner ‘Power of the Dog’ tied ‘House of Gucci’ for the most nominations with three each, however it was surprisingly left off the list for Best Cast, which is basically SAG’s Best Picture category. On the other hand, ‘Gucci,’ which had essentially left the Oscar race till now with only Lady Gaga still in the hunt for Best Actress, has seen a resurrection of sorts with it’s Best Cast nomination and now has a better shot at multiple nominations at the Academy Awards. Rounding out the Best Cast category are ‘Don’t Look Up,’ ‘Belfast,’ ‘CODA’ and ‘King Richard.’

Other surprises in the film categories include Oscar frontrunner for Best Actress, Kristen Stewart being left off of the list for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her work in ‘Spencer.’ As well as actor Peter Dinklage, who will likely be nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his role in ‘Cyrano,’ but was unfortunately snubbed by his fellow actors.

There were also some unexpected nominations, as Javier Bardem scored an Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his work in ‘Being the Ricardos,’ and Jennifer Hudson was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her role in ‘Respect.’

In the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role category, both Ben Affleck and Bradley Cooper managed to receive nominations for their work in ‘The Tender Bar’ and ‘Licorice Pizza,’ respectively, putting both actors squarely in the Oscar race. Likewise, Ruth Negga’s Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role nomination for her work in ‘Passing,’ also makes her an Oscar contender.

On the television side, nominees for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series include ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ ‘The Morning Show,’ ‘Squid Game,’ ‘Succession,’ and ‘Yellowstone.’ Nominees for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series are ‘The Great,’ ‘Hacks,’ ‘The Kominsky Method,’ ‘Only Murders in the Building,’ and ‘Ted Lasso.’

As previously announced, receiving the Life Achievement Award at the 28th annual ceremony will be Oscar winning actress, Helen Mirren. Last year’s ceremony was held virtual due to the pandemic, but this year it will be live again from Barker Hanger in Santa Monica, airing on TNT and TBS at 5pm PST on Sunday, February 27th.

    Warner Bros.

The Screen Actors Guild announced nominations for the 25th Annual SAG Awards on Wednesday morning.

For the top prize of Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, Marvel’s superhero mega-hit “Black Panther” will vie against romantic comedy darling “Crazy Rich Asians,” the romantic drama remake “A Star Is Born,” the Freddy Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman.”

Notably absent from that list is “The Favourite,” which did land nominations for its three female stars: Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone.

  • Morgan Freeman Tapped for SAG Life Achievement Award

American Film Institute's 45th Life Achievement Award Gala Tribute to Diane Keaton - Fixed ShowHe’s played seemingly every role in Hollywood, and now, Morgan Freeman is set to be honored for his impressive body of work: The actor has been tapped as the 54th recipient of the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award.

In a statement on the SAG website, the organization outlines some of Freeman’s many achievements, noting that he’s “one of the most recognizable figures in American cinema” whose “works are among the most critically and commercially successful films of all time.”

“Whether a role requires an air of gravitas, a playful smile, twinkle of the eye, or a world-weary, yet insightful soul, Freeman’s ability to delve to the core of a character and infuse it with a quiet dignity has resulted in some of the most memorable cinematic characters committed to film,” the statement said.

Freeman, who won both an Oscar and a SAG award for his supporting role in 2004’s “Million Dollar Baby,” was previously honored for lifetime achievement by the Golden Globes in 2012, and by the American Film Institute in 2011. He’s been nominated for four other Academy Awards, and has appeared in nearly 100 films, in addition to numerous television shows, and lent his voice to many documentaries and commercial campaigns.

“I am thrilled to announce Morgan Freeman as this year’s recipient of the SAG Life Achievement Award,” said SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris in a statement. “Some actors spend their entire careers waiting for the perfect role. Morgan showed us that true perfection is what a performer brings to the part. He is innovative, fearless and completely unbound by expectations. As a chauffeur, convicted murderer, boxing gym attendant, pimp or president, Morgan fully realized every character, baring their souls and showcasing their humanity. It has been a privilege to see his genius at work.”

Freeman will receive the award at the 24th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony, slated for January 21, 2018.

  • Winona Ryder’s Facial Expressions Steal the Show at SAG Awards

The 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - ShowBy Maane Khatchatourian

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) – Stranger Things” took the stage at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The Netflix series won the Actor for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series on Sunday, ending “Downton Abbey’s” two-year long SAG reign.

No one was more surprised by the feat than Ryder, who grew even more stunned when Harbour read his politically-charged remarks. At times ecstatic and at other times perplexed, she underwent an emotional journey — worthy of an award of its own — on stage. It wasn’t long before videos and gifs of her animated expressions went viral.

Ryder and costar Millie Bobby Brown were also both up for outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series.

“This is heavy,” Ryder could be heard saying last night while handing off the statuette to Harbour. The sentiment could also refer to Harbour’s anti-Trump speech, though.

“We are united in that we are all human beings and we are all together on this horrible, painful, joyous, exciting, and mysterious ride that is being alive,” Harbour said to a standing ovation. “As we act in the continuing narrative of ‘Stranger Things,’ we 1983 midwesterners will repel bullies. We will shelter freaks and outcasts, those who have no hope. We will get past the lies. We will hunt monsters. And when we are lost amidst the hypocrisy and the casual violence of certain individuals and organizations, we will, as per Chief Jim Hopper, punch some people in the face when they seek to destroy the meek and the disenfranchised and the marginalized. And we will do it all with soul, with heart, and with joy.”

  • SAG-AFTRA President Ken Howard, ‘White Shadow’ and ’30 Rock’ Star, Dies at 71

The 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - ShowKen Howard, the president of SAG-AFTRA and a veteran character actor in TV and film, has died. He was 71.

Howard was an Emmy and Tony winner who was highly regarded by those in the entertainment community, winning election to become president of the national chapter of the Screen Actors Guild in 2009. In his post, he advocated for a merger with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, a move that he said would strengthen workers’ rights in the industry; after he won reelection in 2011, the popular proposal was approved in 2012. Howard went on to win two more consecutive terms at the helm of the joint union, with his most recent election occurring in 2015.

But aside from his advocacy on behalf of SAG members, Howard was more known to national and worldwide audiences thanks to a range of eclectic acting roles throughout his career. He rose to stardom on the 1978-1981 CBS series “The White Shadow,” in which he starred as a former NBA player who coached an inner-city high school basketball team. The groundbreaking show, which Howard co-created, dealt with hot-button issues such as sex, drugs, and crime, and the actor pushed network executives to feature controversial storylines that would speak to the young viewers watching at home.

In addition to that series, he also had a memorable turn on NBC sitcom “30 Rock,” where he appeared in a recurring role as Hank Hooper, the CEO of Kabletown. Other television work included “The Office” (Mindy Kaling tweeted that Howard — who popped up as former Dunder Mifflin boss Ed Truck — featured in “the best onscreen prop photo of all time“), “Crossing Jordan,” “Dynasty,” and HBO movie “Grey Gardens” (for which he won the best supporting actor Emmy).

On the film side, Howard starred in “1776” (reprising the role of Thomas Jefferson, which he originated on Broadway), “Clear and Present Danger,” “Michael Clayton,” and “The Judge,” among many others. His most recent roles came in two 2015 flicks, “The Wedding Ringer” and “Joy.”

“Ken was an inspirational leader, and it is an incredible loss for SAG-AFTRA, for his family and for everyone who knew him,” said SAG-AFTRA acting president Gabrielle Carteris in a statement. “He was a light that never dimmed and was completely devoted to the membership. He led us through tumultuous times and set our union on a steady course of excellence. We will be forever in his debt.”

Howard, who made his last public appearance at the SAG Awards ceremony in January, passed away at his home near Los Angeles on Wednesday. No cause of death was released.

Howard is survived by his wife, retired stuntwoman Linda Fetters Howard, and three stepchildren.
