  • 2022 SAG Awards Nominations Announced

(L to R) Jared Leto, Florence Andrews, Adam Driver, Lady Gaga, and Al Pacino in 'House of Gucci'
(L to R) Jared Leto, Florence Andrews, Adam Driver, Lady Gaga, and Al Pacino in ‘House of Gucci’

The 2022 SAG Awards nominations were announced on Wednesday by Rosario Dawson and Vanessa Hudgens via Instagram Live and there were many surprises.

In the film categories, Oscar frontrunner ‘Power of the Dog’ tied ‘House of Gucci’ for the most nominations with three each, however it was surprisingly left off the list for Best Cast, which is basically SAG’s Best Picture category. On the other hand, ‘Gucci,’ which had essentially left the Oscar race till now with only Lady Gaga still in the hunt for Best Actress, has seen a resurrection of sorts with it’s Best Cast nomination and now has a better shot at multiple nominations at the Academy Awards. Rounding out the Best Cast category are ‘Don’t Look Up,’ ‘Belfast,’ ‘CODA’ and ‘King Richard.’

Other surprises in the film categories include Oscar frontrunner for Best Actress, Kristen Stewart being left off of the list for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her work in ‘Spencer.’ As well as actor Peter Dinklage, who will likely be nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his role in ‘Cyrano,’ but was unfortunately snubbed by his fellow actors.

There were also some unexpected nominations, as Javier Bardem scored an Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his work in ‘Being the Ricardos,’ and Jennifer Hudson was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her role in ‘Respect.’

In the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role category, both Ben Affleck and Bradley Cooper managed to receive nominations for their work in ‘The Tender Bar’ and ‘Licorice Pizza,’ respectively, putting both actors squarely in the Oscar race. Likewise, Ruth Negga’s Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role nomination for her work in ‘Passing,’ also makes her an Oscar contender.

On the television side, nominees for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series include ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ ‘The Morning Show,’ ‘Squid Game,’ ‘Succession,’ and ‘Yellowstone.’ Nominees for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series are ‘The Great,’ ‘Hacks,’ ‘The Kominsky Method,’ ‘Only Murders in the Building,’ and ‘Ted Lasso.’

As previously announced, receiving the Life Achievement Award at the 28th annual ceremony will be Oscar winning actress, Helen Mirren. Last year’s ceremony was held virtual due to the pandemic, but this year it will be live again from Barker Hanger in Santa Monica, airing on TNT and TBS at 5pm PST on Sunday, February 27th.

  • Rosario Dawson Confirms She’s Dating Presidential Candidate Cory Booker

Rosario Dawson Confirms She’s Dating Presidential Candidate Cory Booker

    Netflix/Cory Booker

Yes, “Luke Cage” star Rosario Dawson is dating New Jersey Senator Cory Booker.

At the Reagan National Airport in D.C. Thursday, the actress and activist confirmed to TMZ that she is dating the Democratic presidential hopeful.

Dawson, whose films include “Rent,” “Men in Black II,” “25th Hour,” and “He Got Game,” said, “I am just grateful to be with someone that I respect and love and admire so much.”

She was wearing a Cory Booker campaign button, naturally.

Last month on the syndicated radio show The Breakfast Club, Booker mentioned he was dating someone “very special,” adding, “I got a boo.”

While it’s too early to call either their relationship or the election, about half the internet is already anticipating First Lady Rosario Dawson.

Dawson’s political activism includes founding Vote Latino, which aims to get young Latinos registered and to the polls on election day.  “Voting is the umbrella to everything else that I’m doing,”  she told Shape magazine. “Women’s issues, health and disease, poverty, housing — these all fall under that voting power.”

She previously dated comedian Eric André.

  • Rosario Dawson Signs on for ‘Zombieland 2’

Rosario Dawson Signs on for ‘Zombieland 2’

Rosario Dawson as Marvel's Claire Temple
    Netflix

The star-studded cast of “Zombieland 2” has added another high-profile actor.

Rosario Dawson has boarded the upcoming comedy sequel, Deadline reports. She joins a cast that already includes returning stars Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin. Dawson’s fellow newcomers to the series include Zoey Deutch and Avan Jogia.

The film follows 2009’s “Zombieland” and takes place in the same post-apocalyptic world. Like the original, “Zombieland 2” is written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, and is set to be directed by Ruben Fleischer. This time, the zombie slayers will face new kinds of challenges and encounter new human survivors. At the same time, the group will deal with “growing pains.”

Just how Dawson’s character will fit into the story remains to be seen, but she’s used to facing interesting threats. She’s played Claire Temple in multiple Marvel series, including “Daredevil,” “Luke Cage,” and more. Dawson is also known for roles in “Rent,” “Sin City,” and “Seven Pounds,” among others.

“Zombieland 2” will be produced by Gavin Polone and executive produced by Warnick and Reese. A release date has not yet been announced.

  • Alicia Braga Replacing Rosario Dawson in ‘X-Men: New Mutants’

QUEEN OF THE SOUTH -- Season:1 -- Pictured: Alice Braga as Queen -- (Photo by: Justin Stephens/USA Network)Queen of the South” star Alicia Braga, The Wrap reports.

Braga will play Dr. Cecilia Reyes, who’ll act as a mentor to the young mutants played by Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy and Henry Zaga. Filming is set to start in July for an April 13, 2018 release date.

We’re not sure why Dawson is off the project, but she is pretty darn busy. She’s currently filming Netflix’s “The Defenders,” in which she reprises the role of “Night Nurse” Claire Temple she’s played in “Daredevil” and “Iron Fist.”

On the USA series “Queen of the South,” Braga plays Teresa Mendoza, who rises from the barrio of Jalisco, Mexico to become the head of a powerful dug empire. The Brazilian-born Braga, the daughter of actress Sonia Braga, previously starred in “City of God,” “I am Legend” and “Elysium.”

  • Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple Won’t Be in Netflix’s ‘The Punisher’

Rosario Dawson isn’t taking a shift on Netflix’s “The Punisher.”

The actress has appeared as nurse Claire Temple in all of the streaming service’s Marvel series so far, first on “Daredevil” and through this summer’s “The Defenders.” But she won’t be making a cameo on “The Punisher,” which stars Jon Bernthal as the lethal Frank Castle.

“At the end of the day, it’s really hard to get all of those casts together. For ‘The Defenders,’ it was difficult to get everybody together. People are busy!” she told Collider. “I really wanted to do a cameo on ‘The Punisher,’ but it doesn’t always work that way.”

Claire had substantive roles in “Daredevil” and “Luke Cage,” but just minor cameos in “Jessica Jones” and “Iron Fist.”

Perhaps this is a way of separating “The Punisher” as a spinoff, rather than a sibling to the other Marvel series. Frank Castle isn’t appearing in “The Defenders,” and Frank and Claire never met in “Daredevil.” The only related character joining Frank (so far) is Deborah Ann Woll’s Karen.

“The Defenders” begins streaming August 18, while “The Punisher” is likely to premiere sometime later this year.

  • Watch the Cast of ‘Unforgettable’ Play a Steamy Game of Trivia

This weekend’s “Unforgettable,” a rousing, surprisingly complex suspense movie that stars Katherine Heigl, Rosario Dawson, and Geoff Stults, is one of those “scream at the screen” tales of terribly hurt feelings and delicious revenge. (There was a happy hour before my screening so the yelling was particularly pointed.) The film also fits squarely into the mold of the psychosexual thriller, a genre defined largely by blood, boobs, and betrayal. So when we got to sit down with the cast of the film (along with director and producer Denise Di Novi), we thought we’d play a little game of psychosexual thriller trivia (really rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it?)

Watch to find out who is absolutely killer and who just doesn’t make the cut (and go see “Unforgettable,” in theaters this Friday).

  • 7 Things You Need to Know Before You See ‘The LEGO Batman Movie’

The LEGO Batman MovieThis weekend, “The LEGO Batman Movie,” a spin-off of 2014’s masterful “The LEGO Movie,” opens in theaters everywhere (get your tickets now!). This time, everyone’s favorite caped crusader (once again voiced, with gravelly rage, by Will Arnett) is made the main character, and his relationship with a young Robin (Michael Cera), newly minted police commissioner Barbara Gordon (Rosario Dawson) and, of course, his arch-nemesis The Joker (Zach Galifianakis), is explored in hilarious depth.

But what else do you need to know about the latest, brick-filled Batman adventure? Read on to find out!

    1. It’s a Great Batman Movie …

The first thing that you need to know is that this is a great Batman movie. Like, probably the best Batman movie since “The Dark Knight,” which is saying something, and the best animated Batman movie since “Batman: Mask of the Phantasm” (and that was back in 1993). It features a number of his most famous villains (there’s an ongoing gag about Batman’s lack of commitment to the Joker that is pretty priceless) and there is real care and attention given to crafting the character that fans will not only understand but celebrate. He’s given emotional depth and develops fully as the movie goes along. This isn’t one of those animated movies that is just a series of jokes; there’s a real story here and real characters and they’re all perfectly Batman-y.

    2. … And a Great LEGO Movie

One of the questions I had was: well, how is this a LEGO Batman movie? And, well, you’ll see. I don’t want to give anything away because a lot of what happens in the movie, particularly in its second half, hasn’t even been hinted at in the marketing materials for the film. But just know that if you loved the way “The LEGO Movie” playfully mixed IP with an original story about what it takes to be a “master builder” (a term that is reiterated here), then you are going to love “The LEGO Batman Movie.”

    3. There Are a Thousand Easter Eggs (Seriously)

About two minutes into “The LEGO Batman Movie,” there’s a scene where Batman is flying through the streets of Gotham and there are so many Easter eggs, hidden references, and old-school shout-outs flying by that I could barely keep up. I tried to write a few down (I got as far as a reference to Shreck’s Department Store from “Batman Returns”) before giving up. And that was the tip of the iceberg. If you’re a Batman superfan, your mind is going to be spinning. There are references to every filmed Batman adventure since the old black-and-white serials–and that’s just the beginning.

    4. It’s Not Afraid to Poke Fun at the DC Cinematic Universe

One of the more surprising aspects of “The LEGO Batman Movie” is that it openly mocks the self-seriousness of the so-called DC Extended Universe, the small cluster of mostly iffy films that have been based on DC Comics properties and exist in the same shared universe. At one point, The Joker asks Batman who his arch-nemesis really is, and Batman responds, “Superman,” a reference to last year’s poorly (critically) received “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” (one of a handful of nods to that particular film). There are also at least two digs at “Suicide Squad,” the all-villains romp that was released last summer (to a response similar to that of “Batman v. Superman”), and generally “The LEGO Batman Movie” seems to fly in the face of the current crop of DC movies. It’s everything these movies are not — full of heart, funny as hell, and unafraid to be super entertaining without being overwrought or gloomy. Even the score seems to heavily evoke the Christopher Nolan-directed Batman movies. It’s been a long while since Batman was this fun.

    5. Oddly, Wyldstyle Is Never Referenced

So here’s something that’s kind of strange … the movie is about Batman’s reluctance to start a family or engage emotionally with other people. But, in “The LEGO Movie,” he’s seen dating Wyldstyle (played by Elizabeth Banks). This seems to fly in the face of everything the movie is trying so hard to establish. If he really is an antisocial loner, would he really have dated someone that seriously and agreed to go on a series of adventures in the way that he did in the previous film? Also, why aren’t any of those characters around? If this is a shared LEGO-filled universe, shouldn’t there be some crossover of some kind. Like, something? What if Emmett just walked by in the background? No? Maybe next time?

    6. It’s Not Quite as Good as ‘The LEGO Movie’

Just know this: there was something almost transcendent about “The LEGO Movie.” Maybe because it seemed, from the outset, like an incredibly crass cash-grab, so the fact that it was a really great movie was a huge surprise. But more than that, “The LEGO Movie” had to do with corporatization, organized religion, and millennial ennui in a way that was really refreshing and fun. Know that “The LEGO Batman Movie” doesn’t have that much on its mind. Which is OK. It’s still a total blast and will pull on your heartstrings more than once. But you probably won’t walk out of the theater thinking it’s the kind of kicky subversive joy “The LEGO Movie” was.

    7. You’ll Want Additional Brick-Based Batman Movies

One of the holdovers from “The LEGO Movie” is the bickering relationship between Superman and Green Lantern (played, once more, by Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill), suggesting a larger DC LEGO movie universe. And by the end of “The LEGO Movie,” you feel like the story is just gearing up. So yes, if this is a hit, you can probably expect some additional LEGO Batman adventures and guess what? You’ll be ready for them, too.

“The LEGO Batman Movie” is in theaters everywhere now.

  • ‘Unforgettable’ Trailer: Katherine Heigl Takes Crazy Ex to Scary Extremes

Some people are better at moving on from a breakup than others, but fortunately, few are as bad as the ex-wife in the upcoming thriller “Unforgettable.”

A new trailer for the film, released Tuesday, shows Katherine Heigl as Tessa, a woman who can’t deal with the fact that her ex-husband, David (Geoff Stults), is moving on. When he gets engaged to Julia (Rosario Dawson), Tessa feels like her life is being taken from her, and that sends her over the edge. Her behavior becomes increasingly alarming, escalating from biting comments to full-on violent behavior.

Tessa is definitely unstable, and she wages her battle against both subtly and blatantly. It gets out of control fast, to the point that she tries to pin a murder on Julia. Since Heigl so often plays sweetheart characters, it’s fun to see her take on a darker role. Crazy Town, here we come.“Unforgettable” is slated to open on April 21.

  • Rosario Dawson, Theo Rossi Join Marvel’s ‘Luke Cage’

After the success of “Daredevil,” Marvel is gearing up for the release of its other Netflix series, including “Luke Cage,” which just announced some big casting news.

“Sons of Anarchy” alum Theo Rossi has joined the series as Shades (a.k.a. Alvarez), an antagonist of the titular hero and well-known criminal who’s described as “relentless and menacing, smooth and manipulative, street smart and controlling,” per The Hollywood Reporter.

In addition to Rossi, Rosario Dawson, who played Claire Temple on “Daredevil,” will reprise that role for “Cage.” THR notes that Claire serves as a love interest for Cage in the comics, though she’s already filling that role for the titular character on “Daredevil,” so it remains to be seen if that will also be the plan with this new series.

Rossi and Dawson join actor Mike Colter, who plays Cage, described as “a wrongly accused man who obtains superstrength after a sabotaged experiment and escapes prison to become a superhero for hire.”

No release date for the series has been set. Stay tuned.
