‘Freakier Friday’ receives 8.5 out of 10 stars.

Opening in theaters on August 8th is ‘Freakier Friday’, which picks up the story of Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Anna Coleman (Lindsay Lohan) 22 years after the mother and daughter duo swapped bodies and learned life lessons.

Directed this time by Nisha Ganatra (‘Late Night’) the cast also includes the returning likes of Mark Harmon (‘NCIS’) and Chad Michael Murray (‘One Tree Hill’) alongside franchise newcomers Julia Butters (‘Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood’) and Sophia Hammons (‘Up Here’).

Legacy sequels and comedy; two examples of filmmaking that are hard to get right. You have studios looking to exploit classic IP –– in this case, 2003’s lightweight but fun Lindsay Lohan/Jamie Lee Curtis body swap comedy ‘Freaky Friday’ (itself a remake, let’s not forget) –– but in the transition to a more up-to-date story with the core cast intact, something can often be lost.

It’s a relief to report, then, that in this case, that ‘Freakier Friday’, which returns Curtis and Lohan (plus a few other welcome characters from the first film), surrounds them with entertaining newer talent and manages to capture the spirit without feeling like a rip-off.

    Script and Direction

Jordan Weiss has the screenplay credit here, with Elyse Hollander scoring a “story by” listing, evidence of the film going through a few script drafts on its journey to the screen.

But despite the development process, what has emerged still feels fresh and funny, warm and emotional, riffing on the basic body swap concept, and borrowing some elements (such as an impending wedding and tension between teens and mothers –– or grandmother).

Like the old wedding tradition states, something old, something new, something borrowed and while “something blue” only really counts for the denim outfit Curtis’ character dons while occupied by someone else, it all serves to move the story forward while keeping the laughs coming.

The connection between Lohan and Curtis remains strong, and the script finds ways to update their relationship while keeping them as familiar characters. The new additions, meanwhile, including Anna Coleman’s (Lohan) actual child (Butters) and future step-daughter (Hammons), are worthwhile.

Director Nisha Ganatra, meanwhile, keeps it all ticking along well, making good use of Los Angeles locations to have the film feel like it truly takes place in the universe of the 2003 original.

She also represents a welcome move towards diversity, something that occurs here both in front of and behind the camera.

    Cast and Performances

Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan both seemed eager to return to their roles, and from the looks of the movie itself (and the blooper reel at the end), they clearly had a lot of fun catching up with the characters of Tess and Anna Coleman.

With the movie quickly and smoothly briefing us on how their relationship has evolved now Anna is a mother of her own (and has found love with Manny Jacinto’s Eric), it soon gets down to taking us through a familiar story that goes in interesting new directions.

The two actors are more than ready to throw themselves into the physical comedy and also hit the emotional beats when needed.

Julia Butters and Sophia Hammons carry the other end of the heavy lifting as the warring future siblings who are both unhappy with Anna and Eric’s marriage plans (and a potential move to London). The two actors really make the characters’ issues believable, and are just as adept when it comes to the funny moments.

Jacinto meanwhile, is a funny performer who is here saddled a little with too straightforward a role (and a British accent that doesn’t really suit him). Yet he’s still adept at hunky love interest and confused suitor.

‘Freakier Friday’ also brings back some other legacy characters –– Chad Michael Murray as Jake, Anna’s old flame, gets the meatiest role, and still carries his other torch, for Tess. And it’s always good to see perennial character actor Stephen Tobolowsky show up, here reprising frustrated teacher Mr. Bates from the original.

In new supporting roles, the likes of X Mayo (as the principal of Harper and Lily’s school) and especially Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (star of Netflix comedy ‘Never Have I Ever’, who here plays an overly emotional pop star) really make an impact.

‘Freakier Friday’ is a sequel that doesn’t embarrass the original, has callbacks that work as more than simply fan service and should bring a smile to different generations.

It’s also that welcome comedy that is actually funny and makes good use of its cast.

    • Mark Harmon and Chad Michael Murray are back for the new movie.
    • The story takes place years after the 2003 original.

After years of talk about the possibility, we learned in April that Disney was officially making a sequel to 2003’s body swap comedy ‘Freaky Friday’, which starred Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as a mother and daughter who are dealing with drama in their lives and magically end up in each other’s bodies, learning to appreciate the other’s point of view and struggles along the way.

Things have moved on apace with the studio publishing the first photograph of Curtis and Lohan behind the scenes as production began on the sequel, which will see a number of actors returning alongside them from the original and a new crop of young performers joining the cast.

The ‘Freaky’ phenomenon all started with a book. In this case, it’s the 1972 tome by Mary Rogers, which sees a mother and her daughter swapping bodies.

It was first adapted into a movie that hit theaters in 1976, starring Barbara Harris as the mother and Jodie Foster as the daughter.

The 2003 version, directed by Mark Waters, had Curtis and Lohan as the latest iteration, playing Tess and Anna Coleman. Like its predecessor, it tried to bring the core concept of living life in another person’s shoes into modern settings.

Premiering on Netflix March 21st is the new series ‘3 Body Problem,’ which is based on the popular Chinese novel ‘The Three-Body Problem’ by author Liu Cixin and was created by ‘Game of Thrones’ co-creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo (‘True Blood’).

The series stars Benedict Wong (‘Doctor Strange’), Jovan Adepo (‘Babylon’), Eiza González (‘Ambulance’), Jonathan Pryce (‘The Two Popes’), and Liam Cunningham (‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’).

Moviefone: To begin with, Benedict, were you familiar with the book the series is based on before you signed on for the project?

Benedict Wong: No, I wasn’t. I met the guys on Zoom whilst I was filming ‘Doctor Strange.’ I was just immediately very suspicious, why did they need three showrunners for this project? Then delving deep into the first novel is so dense, this science and this world of the game world. I was thinking, I don’t even know how this is going to be filmed. It’s such a challenge. I just picked up the gauntlet and ran with them.

MF: Liam, did you read the book before you started shooting?

Liam Cunningham: No, I’m going to wait till I’m done. I generally don’t do it. Even the last project I did with David and Dan (‘Game of Thrones’), I never read those books. I didn’t want two voices in my ear. My blueprint was the scripts and that’s what I was employed to deliver. If I read the books, if I’d had trouble with any of it, I would’ve used that as a reference. But that’s when I think I might be in trouble when I must go somewhere else for information. So, I didn’t want two voices in my ear, the book voice and the script voice. So, I am going to keep that treat until we’re all done on this. Then I’ll sit down on a beach somewhere under a palm tree and I’ll dig deep into the book.

MF: Liam, can you talk about your preparation and approach to playing this role?

LC: We do enormous amounts of preparation. Enormous amounts, but we prepare for the scene. Our showrunners are very good at formulating a character that is not about, he went to school here or anything like that. In fact, I had a couple of small questions, but I don’t think I ever talked about where he comes from.

MF: Benedict, how did you prepare to play your character?

BW: I think the world builds around you and within this center of your universe, you have everyone at your command. The calls that you make are answered and there’s so much power within that, and that builds that level of who this person is. We did get the blessing of Cixin, the author, and he knew that this was going to be inspired from the books because they were telling a global story but then it still had this Asian spine of myself, being from Manchester and Jess (Hong) being from New Zealand, and then the character of Ye Wenjie played by Zine Tseng and Rosalind Chao. But to tell much more of a global story of look, we have someone who’s Irish in command with this duo and its fascinating to watch because it’s almost like, well, how did they get there? And they have every right to get there too.

MF: Finally, Liam, can you talk about shooting the game sequences?

LC: It was very much what the guys are very good about it, but they kept it to a minimum. So, these cinematics as they call them, the room we were in was very high-tech. It wasn’t that volume that they used on ‘The Mandalorian,’ that semicircular LCD wall. It was a very particular lighting setup on an enormous level. They gave us this huge amount of room to wander about in this place. There were minimal sets. What you hang your hat on is what happens. What’s the information that’s given? You’re seeing this AI representation of whatever word the threat is. So, there was a certain amount, and you did have to use an enormous amount of your imagination and paint the pictures in your head, which can be interesting if it’s very important to the storytelling. It was a joy to do. It was quite a challenge, but a real joy.
