  • ‘Rogue One’ Featurette Highlights Movie’s Real Hero, K-2SO

Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso might be the lead of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” but once again, it’s a robot that steals the show.

Like BB-8 of “The Force Awakens,” K-2SO has become the newest darling droid of the “Star Wars” universe. This new featurette goes behind the scenes of what it was like for actor Alan Tudyk to play the character via motion capture. As Tudyk explains, K-2SO is considered the “anti-C-3PO.” And the clips from the film show the dry humor that the new droid delivers.

Already, K-2SO has become a favorite among “Star Wars” fans. The pitch-perfect tone of the character is just one reason why “Rogue One” is both a critical and commercial hit. The movie had a massive opening weekend at the box office, scoring $155 million in North America, and looks to rake in many more millions over the coming weeks.

  • ‘Rogue One’ Has Biggest Thursday Opening of the Year

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is off to an excellent start at the box office after scoring the year’s biggest Thursday opening.

The movie pulled in $29 million from Thursday night previews, putting it ahead of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” ($27.7 million) and “Captain America: Civil War” ($25 million). But that number does fall short of the Thursday night earnings of last year’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($57 million).

“Rogue One” is projected to have a $135 to $150 million weekend at the box office, which would make it the second-highest December opening of all time (after “The Force Awakens,” naturally).

It’s all good news for Disney and Lucasfilm, since “Rogue One” is the first standalone “Star Wars” film and tells a different kind of story than the Skywalker saga. The success of “Rogue One” paves a smoother path for upcoming standalone movies, including the young Han Solo tale.

  • Here Are the 9 Best ‘Star Wars’ Battle Scenes

Before “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” started blowing up spaceships and mowing down Stormtroopers, the “Star Wars” franchise had a storied history of interplanetary conflict. With more clashes on the horizon for this sci-fi galaxy, we thought it was a good time to take a look back at the nine best battles in the “Star Wars” cinematic universe.

  • ‘Rogue One’ Won’t Have Usual ‘Star Wars’ Title Crawl

Rogue One“Rogue One” definitely deserves its name — it’s going rogue in that it will be the first “Star Wars” movie not to feature an opening title crawl.

Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy revealed that the first “Star Wars” standalone movie will open in a style more typical to its genre, which she described as a World War II adventure film. “We felt that’s so indicative of what those saga films are,” she told Variety. “Initially, we probably will begin the film in a way that is traditional, with just the title.”

All seven previous “Star Wars” films have opened with the expositional crawl, which starts with the famous words: “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away….”

It makes sense that Lucasfilm would want to make the standalone movies distinct from the Skywalker sagas, and also have each one maintain the feel of its genre. Speaking of which, Kennedy also detailed the toned of the untitled Han Solo standalone film, which stars Alden Ehrenreich as a younger version of Harrison Ford’s iconic character. The movie will be directed Chris Miller and Phil Lord (“The Lego Movie”).

“This moves closer to a heist or Western type feel,” she said. “We’ve talked about [Frederic] Remington and those primary colors that are used in his paintings defining the look and feel of the film.”

“Rogue One” opens in theaters Dec. 17. The untitled Han Solo movie is set to open May 25, 2018.

  • Feast on Two More International ‘Rogue One’ Trailers

Rogue One“Rogue One” is ready for liftoff.

One new, very interesting international trailer for the “Star Wars” standalone movie debuted yesterday, and now two more have been released. They don’t show much new footage, but there are a few snippets we haven’t seen before, like a funny moment between friends Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen) and Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen). The new trailers also emphasize the action in the movie, and we can see a little more of a big space battle involving some kind of Empire station and the fight on the ground against stormtroopers.

Though the two trailers don’t give away much more than we’ve already seen, the tone of both feel more like teasers for a war movie vs. the action-adventure tone of the Skywalker-focused “Star Wars” trilogies.

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” also stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, and Riz Ahmed and opens December 16.

  • Joss Whedon Wants to Make a ‘Star Wars’ Spinoff Movie

Tribeca Talks Directors Series: Joss Whedon With Mark RuffaloAfter the huge undertaking of directing “The Avengers” and its sequel, “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Joss Whedon may not make another Marvel movie again. But that doesn’t mean the director wouldn’t want to direct another huge franchise film somewhere down the road — and he may be staying in the Disney family.

In an interview with Collider, Whedon addressed the possibility of signing up for another tentpole flick in the future. While the director admitted that he was initially skeptical about the idea, he’s recently changed his tune, and has a few ideas for huge franchises he could put his stamp on. In addition to showing interest in directing a James Bond movie and perhaps — gasp! — a DC flick, there’s a certain little series that’s recently caught his eye.

“Do I want to make a ‘Star Wars’ movie? Yeah,” Whedon told Collider. “I was [initially] like, ‘I don’t want to make a “Star Wars” movie. Like, god dammit, why?’ But I saw the trailer for ‘Rogue [One]’ awhile ago and I was like, ‘I want to do that.’ To make a ‘Star Wars’ movie and not be wed to the bigger picture.”

The director explained to Collider that one of his favorite things about directing the “Avengers” flicks was the personal freedom that Marvel gave him to make the movies he wanted, and he saw another opportunity for that with this new series of “Star Wars” standalones. And adding his unique voice to that universe — or any other existing franchise, for that matter — would be “a fun thing to do, to put yourself in the service of something if you think you can add an interpretation,” he told Collider.

Disney is definitely keen on making a bunch more spinoffs in the future, so Whedon could certainly lobby for the job. And his existing connection to the company is guaranteed to give him a major in. Now all that remains to be seen is if the two parties can come together on a concept. Stay tuned.

  • Get Ready for a New ‘Rogue One’ Trailer Soon

Exciting “Rogue One” news, we have!

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” director Gareth Edwards appeared on “The Star Wars Show” today, and he had two important reveals for fans. The first was that a trailer is set to drop tomorrow, and the second was one we could obsess over immediately: the film’s theatrical poster.

Edwards showed off the new poster, which features Felicity Jones as protagonist Jyn Erso. Her co-stars appear as well, as the show’s hosts were quick to note. They also oohed and aahed over the texture detailing on Jyn and the familiar, ominous face lurking behind her. (Oh, hi, Darth Vader.) The poster quickly spread across the internet, especially among the social media masses.
The poster is great to see, of course, but the trailer should be even better. It will show the “Rogue One” cast in action, which includes Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, Jiang Wen, and Forest Whitaker.

The film takes place 19 years after the Galactic Empire was formed and follows the story of how the Death Star came into the rebels’ control. We’ll get a closer look when the trailer hits tomorrow — and, of course, when “Rogue One” premieres on Dec. 16.

  • Final ‘Rogue One’ Trailer Is Coming in October

Rogue OneBits and pieces of footage from “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” are being slowly released. We’ve gotten a full trailer, some TV spots, and a behind-the-scenes clip and fans hungry for more will get a treat in October — the final trailer.

According to Star Wars News, a Russian marketing director revealed at the Kino Expo International in St. Petersburg that the final “Rogue One” trailer will debut in front of Marvel’s “Doctor Strange.” The latter movie opens in Russia on October 28 and in the U.S. on November 4.

That makes a lot of sense, as Lucasfilm and Marvel are corporate siblings under Disney. And last year, the final trailer for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” also hit in October, in time for advance ticket sales.

Perhaps the final trailer will give fans more than just a brief glimpse at Darth Vader, as the first trailer did (we can hope). “Rogue One” opens in theaters December 16.
