  • ‘The Craft’ Is a Wicked ’90s Time Capsule That’ll Make You Hate Los Angeles: Podcast

THE CRAFT“We are those ‘The Craft‘-loving weirdos, mister.” Well, half of us are, the other half want to invoke Manon and get back the hour and 40 minutes spent watching the movie.

Tim picked the (apparently divisive) ’90s teen witch thriller, which stars perhaps the most ’90s cast ever assembled: Robin Tunney, Neve Campbell, Fairuza Balk, Rachel True, and Skeet Ulrich. Topics discussed include obvious wigs, Catholic schools with no rules, terrible special effects, terrible parents, Breckin Meyer‘s stellar douche acting, and the hell-on-Earth that is Los Angeles. (Seriously, there are a lot of trash fires and snake-loving ne’er-do-wells in this movie’s version of L.A.)

Next week’s movie, “John Carter,” comes courtesy of special guest Drew Taylor, who will somehow try to convince us that watching a loincloth-clad Taylor Kitsch learn how to battle aliens in low gravity for two hours and 12 minutes is time well spent.

  • ‘The Craft’: 10 Things You (Probably) Didn’t Know About One of Your Favorite ’90s Movies

Twenty years ago this week, four teenage girls dabbled in magic powers and unleashed forces more powerful than they could have imagined. We’re not just talking about the plot of “Charmed”).

For all its influence and popularity, there’s still much you may not know about “The Craft.” Here are some of the secrets behind the beloved teen-witch cautionary tale.
    1. Star Robin Tunney (center), who plays Sarah, wore a wig throughout the film, having recently shaved her head for her role in “Empire Records.”

    2. How did director Andrew Fleming do so well in understanding the mindset of his teen-girl heroines — not only in “The Craft,” but also in “Dick” and “Nancy Drew“? According to Fleming, “Dick” co-star Michelle Williams figured out the answer. “Michelle said that, despite my manly exterior, I’m actually a 15-year-old girl, and I do feel very giddy and school girlish quite a lot of the time.”
    3. Fairuza Balk (Nancy) is the only one of the four leads who was an actual practicing Wiccan, at least for a little while. At the time of the shoot, she was the owner of Panpipes Magickal Marketplace, an occult shop in Hollywood.

    4. Bonnie in “The Craft” was the first major film role for Neve Campbell. Skeet Ulrich (Chris) and Campbell worked together for the first time here, a few months before they reunited in “Scream.”

    6. The beach ritual scene seemed to summon up some real-life creepy vibes. During filming, a horde of bats appeared and lingered (creepy). The waves extinguished the candles. And at the climactic moment, when Balk’s Nancy cried out for the spirit to fill her, the power went out.
    7. The knife fight between Tunney and Balk won the MTV Movie Award for Best Fight, beating such experienced big-screen fighters as Jackie Chan (in “Police Story 4”) and Jim Brown (in “Mars Attacks”).

    8. The film cost a reported $15 million to produce. It earned back $56 million at the worldwide box office.

    9. “The Craft” has been credited as the main influence on the growth of real-life teen interest in Wicca over the past 20 years.
    10. A year ago, Sony announced plans for a remake, to be written and directed by horror filmmaker Leigh Janiak (“Honeymoon“). Among the original stars, Balk balked, proclaiming on Twitter that she doesn’t approve of remakes in general.

  • Best of Late Night TV: Ellen Plays ‘Password’ With Reese, Steve Carell; Mila Kunis Talks Tinder (VIDEO)

If you’re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s the best of what happened last night on late night.

Ellen DeGeneres was Jimmy Fallon’s guest Tuesday night on “The Tonight Show,” but two current Oscar nominees – Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carell – competed opposite Ellen and Jimmy in a game of “Password.” They were actually pretty good.Neil Young was also on “The Tonight Show” and here Jimmy does an amazing impression to sing “Old Man” along with the real guy. Two Neil Youngs = doubly amazing!
Mila Kunis was on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” to promote “Jupiter Ascending” and she talked about her new baby. This is her first time out and about without her daughter – she admitted she cried to leave Wyatt behind. She also said she and Ashton Kutcher hold their child very differently. Speaking of Ashton, she talked about how people are always approaching him with new things and he has her check them out. Tinder wasn’t really out yet when they started dating but he had her sign up online. You have to watch that video to the end to hear Jimmy’s line. Bob Odenkirk was on JKL to promote this Sunday’s premiere of “Better Call Saul.” They don’t want to ruin “Breaking Bad” so they’re very happy with how the spinoff turned out. In the second video, they include a clip of Bob watching the show for the first time and realizing he’s the star. Debra Messing — with that forever flawless hair – was on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” talking about how her old “Will & Grace” co-star Eric McCormack is guest-starring on “The Mysteries of Laura” this season. Horatio Sanz was also on Seth’s show and he and Fred Armisen re-enacted their cut “Toy Collectors” SNL sketch. Dr. Phil was on “Late Show with David Letterman” and Dave criticized Phil’s all-black wardrobe, then shared a new slogan for him. They dissed each other by saying they watch the competition’s shows. (Dave watches Ellen, Phil watches Kimmel … or so they say.) Phil also gave Dave some parenting advice. Robin Tunney of “The Mentalist” was on Letterman’s show (sexy outfit!) and she confessed she once wanted to be stranded on an island with him. He was so flattered, as he should’ve been. Steven Yeun was on “Conan” and he said he can’t stand when people nit-pick little things on “The Walking Dead.” He was on the Elvis Duran radio show the other day and a woman called in to ask about grass lengths of the lawns on the show. “The basis of the show is that there’s dead people that came back to life to eat people to kill them to come back to life. Who cares about the grass?” Conan pushed for spoilers on the rest of Season 5, which starts this Sunday. Steven just said “It’s really good. I think it’s some of the best episodes we’ve ever made – and that’s not just saying that…” Conan said when he watched the Season 5 premiere, his eyes melted. So Steven added, “This Episode 9 that’s coming up, other things of you will melt.” Um, great? Steven also emphasized that not all Asians look alike, although a lot of guys out there keep telling him they get mistaken for him. He also goes on Reddit to spread that not-all-Asians-are-the-same message, and there’s a good Brad Pitt connection. Also, Steven is the Asian Elijah Wood. Jay and Mark Duplass (who have the new show “Togetherness”) were also on “Conan” and they air-drummed with the host
