    • Michael Madsen has died at the age of 67.
    • He was known for appearing in cult movies, often as a tough guy.
    • Madsen became one of filmmaker Quentin Tarantino’s go-to actors.

Michael Madsen, who became a cult icon for his roles in Quentin Tarantino’s early movies, died on July 2nd, according to a statement from his family.

Known for his intense screen presence, rugged charm, and signature slow-burn delivery, Madsen built a career out of playing men who were dangerous, broken, and sometimes heartbreakingly human.

In Tarantino’s 1992 debut ‘Reservoir Dogs’, Madsen gave one of his most infamous performances as Mr. Blonde, the sadistic ex-con whose brutal dance scene — set to “Stuck in the Middle with You” — became one of the most talked-about moments in indie film history.

But behind the onscreen menace, those close to him saw a sensitive soul. As his family wrote in his obituary:

“He walked the line between myth and man, never pretending to be anything other than who he was. He will be remembered for his passion, his poetry, and his deep love for his family. The world is a little less dangerous — and a little less beautiful — without him.”

    Michael Madsen: Early Life

Born on September 25, 1957, in Chicago, Illinois, Michael Søren Madsen grew up in a creative household. His mother, Elaine, was a poet and filmmaker, and his sister, Virginia Madsen, would go on to become an Oscar-nominated actor herself.

After high school, Madsen initially worked as a mechanic and served time in a juvenile detention facility; real-life experiences that would inform the grit and authenticity he brought to so many of his roles.

He eventually turned to acting, studying at the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago under John Malkovich. That foundation helped shape an actor capable of conveying equal parts threat and tenderness.

Madsen’s early film career began in the 1980s with roles in movies such as ‘WarGames’ and ‘The Natural,’ but his breakthrough came in the early 1990s.

The ‘Reservoir Dogs’ role of Mr. Blonde (which he famously won over fellow actor James Woods) launched him into a new echelon of character actors and cemented his association with Tarantino, who would later cast him as the grizzled assassin Budd in ‘Kill Bill’.

Over the years, Madsen amassed a diverse filmography of more than 200 credits. His work spanned genres and budgets — from big studio projects such as ‘Donnie Brasco,’Thelma & Louise,’ and ‘Sin City,’ to gritty B-movie thrillers and straight-to-video crime dramas.

He played gangsters, hitmen, cowboys, cops, and outlaws with equal conviction.

He also made memorable appearances in Robert Rodriguez’s ‘Desperado,’ Tony Scott’s ‘True Romance,’ and the vampire movie ‘BloodRayne.’

Beyond acting, Madsen was also a published poet, authoring several collections of verse. His writing often reflected on love, fatherhood, addiction, and redemption.

Though his personal life included struggles – most notably with substance abuse and the loss of his son Hudson – Madsen remained a prolific artist and fiercely loyal friend.

In his later years, he appeared in indie films and lent his voice to video games like ‘Grand Theft Auto III.’ He was also a frequent presence at film festivals, where he was celebrated for his contributions to American cinema.

He is survived by his wife DeAnna and four children.

    • A new take on Robert Rodriguez’ ‘The Faculty’ is in the works.
    • Rodriguez and ‘Barbarian’s Zach Cregger are producing this remake.
    • The original starred Jordana Brewster, Clea DuVall, Josh Hartnett and more.

Are you ready to go back to school?

No, we don’t mean the depressing return to campuses after a holiday –– Miramax is looking to revisit 1998 sci-fi thriller ‘The Faculty,’ in which a group of highschoolers discover that something is very wrong with their teachers and other staff.

    4940

The original film was directed by Robert Rodriguez, who at that point was mostly known for ‘El Mariachi,’ ‘Desperado,’ ‘Four Rooms’ and ‘From Dusk Till Dawn.’

In what is a rarity for those involved in the legacy title, Rodriguez will be an active part of the behind-the-scenes team on the remake, as Variety reports that he’s on board as producer.

But he’s not alone: Zach Cregger, who broke out big with his own genre offering, 2022’s horror thriller ‘Barbarian,’ is also producing.

Cregger is teaming up with Drew Hancock, the writer/director behind new thriller ‘Companion,’ (which Cregger produced), and Hancock will write the screenplay for the new ‘Faculty.’

We can certainly see some rich material for a new version of the story, since social media is much more rampant among highschoolers (and, er, everyone else), and that could play a big part.

The storyline for the original movie is a take on the tension between highschoolers and their teachers.

When some very creepy things start happening around school, the kids at Herrington High make a chilling discovery that confirms their worst suspicions: their teachers really are from another planet.

As mind-controlling parasites rapidly begin spreading from the faculty to the students’ bodies, it’s ultimately up to the few who are left, an unlikely collection of loners, leaders, nerds, and jocks to save the world from alien domination.

The original story was dreamt up by writers David Wechter and Bruce Kimmel, with the final production script crafted by ‘Scream’s Kevin Williamson.

It grossed an impressive $63.2 million and has developed a cult following in the subsequent decades.

The movie starred Jordana Brewster, Clea DuVall, Josh Hartnett, Shawn Hatosy, Laura Harris, Usher Raymond, Salma Hayek, Piper Laurie, Christopher McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Robert Patrick, Famke Janssen, Elijah Wood and Jon Stewart in a pre-‘Daily Show’ role.

There has been no announcement yet for who might star in the new ‘Faculty,’ but we’d think those details will be arriving in the coming months.

What else is Robert Rodriguez working on?

Rodriguez, as usual, has a wealth of projects in development. He most recently directed ‘Spy Kids: Armageddon’ for Netflix, which was released in 2023.

He’s currently busy making TV series ‘El Gato,’ which focuses on Frank Guerrero, who discovers that his deceased father was the legendary, titular vigilante.

Returning to Mexico, Frank becomes embroiled in family power struggles while uncovering his father’s connections to a contemporary terror plot.

Beyond that, Rodriguez has long been developing a new version of animated series ‘The Jetsons.’

He also has a sequel to 2020 Netflix outing ‘We Can Be Heroes,’ an adaptation of the ‘Jonny Quest’ cartoons and a movie based on Frank Frazetta’s ‘Fire and Ice’ at various stages, though most of them in limbo.

And those are just the projects we know about.

Cregger, meanwhile, is following ‘Barbarian’ with ‘Weapons,’ a multistory horror movie about the disappearance of high school students in a small town.

That film, which will be out next year, stars Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong and Austin Abrams.

He’s also recently announced that he’s attached to write and direct a reboot of the ‘Resident Evil’ video game adaptations, just the latest to tackle the story of a virus that turns the population of a town (and beyond) into undead nightmares.

When will this remake of ‘The Faculty’ be in theaters?

Miramax, which released the original, is backing the new one, but has yet to announce a release date for this one.

And with no director in place yet, chances are it’ll be a while before we see too much movement.

The company has been on a remake development spree of late, rooting through its extensive library (which includes movies such as ‘Chicago,’ ‘No Country for Old Men,’ ‘Scary Movie’ and ‘The English Patient‘.)

While we’re doubtful that the likes of ‘No Country for Old Men’ would get remade (though little surprises us these days), a new ‘Scary Movie’ is headed our way, with the Wayans brothers returning to craft the film for Paramount. It’ll be scaring up business in cinemas next year.

Robert Rodriguez will not let ‘Zorro’ go.

The filmmaker behind movies such as ‘El Mariachi,’ ‘Machete,’ ‘Sin City,’ ‘Spy Kids‘ and ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’ (to name but a few) has been trying to set up a gender-swapped version of the sword-swinging character for the last couple of years.

Rodriguez’ history stretches back to him nearly directing ‘The Mask of Zorro’ in 1998, but he’s been attached to a TV take since it was announced in December 2021.

Back then, it was set up with NBC, with a script from Alfredo Barrios Jr. and Rebecca Rodriguez (Robert’s sister) and counting Sofia Vergara and her LatinWe as part of its creative team.

It then moved to the CW in 2022, with Vergara dropping out and ‘Mayans M.C.’s Sean Tretta now on board to co-write with Rebecca.

With the CW largely getting out of the scripted series business, the show –– which always had the backing of CBS Studios –– now has a home at CBS the network.

The latest member of the behind-the-scenes team is John Hlavin, who created the adaptation of the movie ‘The Man Who Fell to Earth’ for Showtime. He and Rebecca Rodriguez will write a new original script to launch the show, which we’re sure all involved are crossing their fingers actually happens this time.

Rodriguez’ take on the character is far from the only ‘Zorro’ in development or already having hit screens.

French series ‘Zorro,’ starring Jean Dujardin as the masked swordsman, premiered on Paramount+ earlier this month. Before that, Prime Video’s ‘Zorro’ debuted in January with Miguel Ángel Bernardeau Duato leading the Spanish cast.

And Wilmer Valderrama has been developing a Zorro series of his own at Disney+ since 2021 with ‘Game of Thrones’ veteran Bryan Cogman jumping aboard last spring.

Valderrama is an executive producer and aims to star in the Disney Branded Television project, which is in active development.

It follows privileged caballero Diego De La Vega, who returns to his hometown of El Pueblo de Los Angeles following a family tragedy. There, he discovers a culture of corruption and injustice that will lead him to take on the mantle of the masked vigilante Zorro — America’s first true superhero.

  • Director Eli Roth Hands Over ‘Borderlands’ Re-Shoots

    Lionsgate's 'Borderlands.'
    Lionsgate’s ‘Borderlands.’

There has been some disturbed chatter in the last couple of days about video game adaptation ‘Borderlands’, which ‘Hostel’ and ‘Cabin Fever’ director Eli Roth shot way back in 2021 (it was long enough ago that star Cate Blanchett has had time to shoot ‘Tár’, which has just hit theaters).

But with word that Roth has stepped away from the film ahead of some re-shoots, there was naturally concern that it’s all gone a little wrong and that the director has somehow been fired.

Lionsgate is stepping up to do a little damage control and now comes word via Deadline that it’s more to do with a schedule clash.

Roth, you see, is finally ready to make the full-length movie ‘Thanksgiving’, spawned from a fake trailer he made to contribute to Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’ ‘Grindhouse’.

It was popular enough that there was talk of a full movie based on the trailer, but while Roth has sometimes mentioned it, he’s finally ready to make it a reality.

Thanksgiving’––in fake trailer form at least––features a slasher who makes his own carving board out of the inhabitants of a Massachusetts town during the annual turkey day. One of the pivotal scenes involved Roth himself, separated from his head while in the throes of passion with a date in a convertible.

Director and actor Eli Roth and Brad Pitt in 'Inglourious Basterds.'
(L to R) Director and actor Eli Roth and Brad Pitt in ‘Inglourious Basterds.’

Now, of course, there could be more to it than anyone is willing to admit––given the long post-production process of ‘Borderlands’, surely there has been time for Roth to schedule making ‘Thanksgiving’ so that it doesn’t clash with ‘Borderlands’. But movie shooting schedules can be tough to figure out with so much that needs to happen, so perhaps it really is just timing.

Still, the addition of Tim Miller––who last made ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’––is an interesting one. He’s got plenty of experience with the sort of effects load that might be involved in even re-shoots of something along the lines of the game adaptation.

‘Borderlands’ adapts the popular game title and stars Blanchett as Lilith, an infamous outlaw with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of the universe’s most powerful man Atlas (Edgar Ramirez).

Lilith forms an alliance with an unexpected team – Roland (Kevin Hart), a former elite mercenary, now desperate for redemption; Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Florian Munteanu), Tina’s musclebound, rhetorically challenged protector; Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis), the scientist with a tenuous grip on sanity; and Claptrap (Jack Black), a persistently wiseass robot.

These unlikely heroes must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power. The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other.

Naturally, ‘Borderlands’ has yet to announce a release date, but it’ll certainly need to impress to keep up with the current trend of successful movies and shows based on games.

  • Gina Rodriguez and Zachary Levi Starring in New ‘Spy Kids’ Movie

Carla Gugino as Ingrid Cortez, Daryl Sabara as Juni Cortez, Antonio Banderas as Gregorio Cortez, and Alexa Vega as Carmen Cortez in 2001's 'Spy Kids.
(L to R) Carla Gugino as Ingrid Cortez, Daryl Sabara as Juni Cortez, Antonio Banderas as Gregorio Cortez, and Alexa Vega as Carmen Cortez in 2001’s ‘Spy Kids.

Way back in 2001, Robert Rodriguez broke into the family film market with ‘Spy Kids’, which starred Carla Gugino, Antonio Banderas, Alexa Vega, and Daryl Sabara in the story of kids who have to become spies to help their secret agent parents with a world-troubling threat.

The success of that film built a franchise that included three movie sequels and a TV spin-off, plus a variety of other media. We’ve known that he’s been planning to return to the ‘Spy Kids’ universe for a reboot and he’s now locked in the main cast to make up his new secret agent family.

Gina Rodriguez, Zachary Levi, Everly Carganilla and newcomer Connor Esterson are the chosen group, according to Deadline.

This latest ‘Spy Kids’ chapter is set after the children (Carganilla and Esterson) of the world’s greatest secret agents (Rodriguez, Levi) unwittingly help a powerful game developer unleash a computer virus that gives him control of all technology, leading them to become spies themselves to save their parents and the world. Rodriguez wrote the script with his son, Racer Max, who will also be a producer on the movie.

With the new movie, it’s a whole new chapter in the story – there’s no word yet whether any of the previous cast will show up either in this movie or any potential sequels.

Gina Rodriguez in 'Jane The Virgin.'

And unlike the previous films, the latest ‘Spy Kids’ falls under Rodriguez’s deal with Spyglass, Skydance and Netflix, and will premiere on the streaming service. It follows Rodriguez’s previous movie for Netflix, 2020’s ‘We Can Be Heroes’, and the previous ‘Spy Kids’ franchise small-screen spin-off ‘Spy Kids: Mission Critical’.

From the beginning, Rodriguez’ mission has been to keep his stories diverse. “For me it was a big victory to have the kids in ‘Spy Kids’ be a Latin family,” he said at Comic-Con@Home in 2020. “The studio was like, ‘Why are you making them Latin, though, why don’t you just make them American?” he said. “They are American, they’re based on my family.”

Rodriguez – Gina, not Robert – is still best known for long-running TV series ‘Jane the Virgin’ and has grown her career successfully since that breakout role. She has a busy schedule right now, between new ABC sitcom ‘Not Dead Yet’ and Amazon survival series ‘Last Known Position’. As for Levi, he’ll be back on big screens leading superhero sequel ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’, which is in theaters on and was most recently seen as football star Kurt Warner in the biopic ‘American Underdog’.

While Esterson is mostly a newcomer, he did appear in YouTube series ‘Attaway General’. And Carganilla stole scenes as the adorable Maggie in Apple TV+ series ‘The Afterparty’. She’s also been seen in ‘Yes Day’, ‘The Haunted Man’ and, perhaps most appropriately, played the baby version of Gina Rodriguez’s character on ‘Jane the Virgin’.

The new movie has yet to confirm a release date on Netflix.

If even the genre-steeped likes of Robert Rodriguez (producer of ‘Predators’) and Shane Black (who was in the original 1987 ‘Predator’ and wrote/directed 2018 misfire ‘The Predator’) can’t crack a great movie set within the alien hunter franchise, what hope does anyone else have?

That question will hopefully be answered in positive fashion by ’10 Cloverfield Lane’ director Dan Trachtenberg, who is behind a bold new take on the ‘Predator’ mythos. He’s aiming for more success by turning back the clock and making a prequel movie, which has a new trailer online.

Prey’, set 300 years ago, is the story of a young woman, Naru (Amber Midthunder), a fierce and highly skilled warrior. She has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains, so when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people. The prey she stalks, and ultimately confronts, turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator with a technologically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries.

The Comanche Nation is a Native American tribe today headquartered in Oklahoma, having migrated through Wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, and Texas. Trachtenberg and his team have stated their intent to present a respectful portrayal of the Comanche people in ‘Prey’. “The filmmakers were committed to creating a film that provides an accurate portrayal of the Comanche and brings a level of authenticity that rings true to its Indigenous peoples,” says a statement.

Producer Jhane Myers, an acclaimed filmmaker, Sundance Fellow, and member of the Comanche nation herself, is known for her attention and dedication to films surrounding the Comanche and Blackfeet nations and her passion for honoring the legacies of the Native communities.

As a result, the film features a cast comprised almost entirely of Native and First Nation’s talent, including Midthunder, Dakota Beavers, Stormee Kipp, Michelle Thrush, Julian Black Antelope.

Writer Patrick Aison, who developed the movie with Trachtenberg, has written for shows including ‘Treadstone’ and ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’, while Trachtenberg broke out in the short film field and TV commercial space. Since directing the most successful ‘Cloverfield’ spin-off, he’s mostly been making episodes of TV including ‘Black Mirror’ and ‘The Boys’.

“It was very tricky to find a way to have the Predator feel, at once, 300 years earlier in iteration and in what it has to wield, but also feel still feel far more advanced than what our characters are used to and have ever dealt with before,” Trachtenberg told Collider. “That way, it really can feel like this David and Goliath grudge match unfolding. That was challenging. Some things in the trailer are teased, and I’m excited for people to watch some familiar gadgets and some familiar weapons in the arsenal, but also a lot of new things that I think are super cool and that I hope people will enjoy.”

‘Prey’ is targeting an August 5th release via Hulu.

New films from “Call Me By Your Name” director Luca Guadagnino, and Robert Rodriguez, along with “The Lighthouse” (from “The Witch” helmer Robert Eggers) will debut at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight. Oh, and a Netflix film.

That’s notable because the official festival just banned Netflix films for the second year in a row. Although the Directors’ Fortnight runs concurrently with the Cannes Fest (May 15-25), it’s been run independently by the French Directors Guild for 50 years.

The Netflix entry that will be showing at Directors’ Fortnight is the horror film “Wounds” by Babak Anvari, whose previous film was “Under the Shadow.” It premiered at the Sundance film festival and will be distributed internationally by Netflix.

The fest’s new director, Paolo Moretti said this year’s lineup showcases 16 films from directors who have never presented a film at Cannes before. “That’s what Directors’ Fortnight is meant to be doing — be a launchpad for new auteurs who are making fresh, bold choices,” he told Variety.

He was particularly fond of “The Lighthouse,” which stars Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe, calling it a “hypnotic two-hander.”

Here are the films scheduled for Directors’ Fortnight:
“Alice and the Mayor” (directed by Nicolas Pariser)
“And Then We Danced” (directed by Levan Akin)
“Blow It to Bits” (directed by Lech Kowalski)

It’s now been 15 years since director Quentin Tarantino wrapped up the “Kill Bill” saga in “Kill Bill: Vol. 2.” And whether you treat them as two movies or one complete epic, they remain some of the greatest martial arts movies ever made. So celebrate this big anniversary by learning some interesting facts about this violent, tragic second part.

    1. Tarantino’s friend and frequent collaborator Robert Rodriguez agreed to help score the film for a salary of $1. In exchange, Tarantino agreed to direct a scene in 2005’s “Sin City” for the same price.

    2. The character Pai Mei is largely inspired by Pak Mei, a popular villain in Chinese folklore. His martial arts style is also based on that of the late Bruce Lee, who was renowned for his “One-Inch Punch” technique.

    3. The original script paid homage to badly dubbed martial arts movies by having Chia Hui Liu recite Pai Mei’s lines in Cantonese and Tarantino himself dubbing over them in English.

    4. The original script also includes a scene that explains why The Bride is no longer driving the Pussy Wagon in “Vol. 2” It turns out it was destroyed by Go-Go Yubari’s sister Yuki.

    5. Another deleted storyline involves a confrontation between Bill and Michael Jai White playing the character Black Dynamite. One of these scenes is included as an extra on the DVD release.

    6. Tarantino originally cast Ricardo Montalban as brothel owner Esteban Vihaio. But when Michael Parks filled in for Montalban at a script reading, Tarantino liked his performance so much he decided to give him the job instead.

    7. If the rivalry between The Bride and Elle seems especially believable in the movie, it’s because Uma Thurman and Darryl Hannah reportedly feuded throughout production and refused to be in the same room except when filming scenes together.

    8. Eagle-eyed viewers might spot a gasoline can in Budd’s trailer. This is the same can Michael Madsen‘s character used in 1992’s “Reservoir Dogs” when he attempted to burn a police officer alive.

    9. The film includes another nod to “Reservoir Dogs” when Budd tells the bride the kneecap is the most painful place to be shot. In “Reservoir Dogs,” Harvey Keitel‘s character Mr. White says the same thing about the stomach.

    10. Whereas The Bride kills dozens of people in the first movie, Bill is the only person she kills in the sequel.

    11. Beatrix and her daughter can be seen watching 1981’s “Shogun Assassin” on the TV at the end of the film. According to David Carradine, the original plan was to show 1970’s “The Aristocats” instead, but Disney prevented its inclusion.

    12. Tarantino has discussed plans for a follow-up to the “Kill Bill” duology, which would focus on an adult Nikki Bell seeking vengeance against the Bride for the death of Vernita Green. But while he once suggested the sequel might be released in 2014 (the tenth anniversary of Vol. 2), as of 2019 the sequel still hasn’t materialized.

    13. Tarantino has also expressed in interest in producing anime movies that reveal the origin stories of both the Bride and Bill.
