    • A movie based on ‘Archie’ comics is in the works at Universal.
    • Phil Lord and Chris Miller are producing the movie.
    • The script comes from ‘Superwoman: Woman of Tomorrow’ comic writer Tom King.

While current audiences might be most familiar with the ‘Archie’ comic book stories via long-running CW series ‘Riverdale’, plans are afoot for a different take, this one aimed at the big screen.

According to reporter Jeff Sneider, Universal has a movie project based on the ‘Archie’ comics from powerhouse filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and Tom King, whose ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ comics run is the source material for next year’s latest DC Studios movie.

Exactly what the new take will be remains to be seen, but it’s certainly going to be eagerly watched given Lord and Miller’s involvement.

    What’s the story of ‘Archie’?

The ‘Archie’ comics series, which have been published for 85 years, follows the high school hijinks of the title character and his main squeezes, Veronica and Betty. It has been turned into any number of shows and movies.

While ‘Riverdale’ was steeped in a ‘Twin Peaks’-like noir and followed the underbelly of the small town where Archie and the gang lived, the new tone of the new movie is being kept a mystery for now.

Here’s what Lord and Miller said in a statement:

“We are longtime fans of Archie, Veronica, Betty, and the gang in all of their iterations. When we heard Tom King’s take on the classic material, we instantly thought it made sense as an event movie for all audiences — both lifelong fans and a whole new generation. We’re so excited to bring these beloved characters to the big screen.”

Emma Watts, who used to run 20th Century Studios and now has her own production company, teamed up with King (who on the scriptwriting front has been working on DC Studios’ HBO series ‘Lanterns’) to develop an initial pitch, which they then presented to Lord and Miller.

They, in turn, took it to Universal under the terms of their first look deal.

What else are Lord and Miller working on?

The ever-busy filmmaking duo have live-action sci-fi comedy thriller ‘Project Hail Mary’, adapted from ‘The Martian’s Andy Weir’s book headed our way next year.

‘Project Hail Mary’, which stars Ryan Gosling, will land in theaters on March 20th, 2026.

And then there’s the small matter of the third ‘Spider-Verse’ movie, ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’, with the latest animated outing due in 2027.

When will ‘Archie’ be on screens?

With the project still rattling around the development zone, we wouldn’t expect to see a release date announcement until it is closer to being finalized.

    • She joins Nicholas Galitzine, who’s playing He-Man.
    • Travis Knight is in the director’s chair.

After defeating previous efforts to turn it into a new movie, the 1980s ‘Masters of the Universe’ toy line (and its attendant cartoon series) might finally have met its match.

Though the ‘Masters’ concept has led to success for Netflix on the small screen, it is Amazon MGM that has spearheaded a fresh cinematic take on the concept, with ‘The Idea of You’s Nicholas Galitzine playing central character He-Man and ‘Bumblebee’s Travis Knight directing.

Now, via Deadline, we have word that ‘Riverdale’s Camila Mendes will also be aboard the film, playing warrior woman Teela.

‘He-Man and the Masters of the Universe’ follows Prince Adam, who has a magic sword that turns him into the powerful, heroic He-Man. He and his comrades (including Teela, the Captain of the Royal Guard) must protect the planet of Eternia from the evil machinations of villain Skeletor.

A live-action big screen version in 1987 starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor flopped at the box office, which scuttled a planned sequel.

The new live-action version has torn a path through filmmakers and studios. Directors such as ‘Face/Off’s John Woo, ‘Crazy Rich AsiansJon M. Chu and ‘Truth Or Dare’s Jeff Wadlow have been attached at one time or another, but the movie has always fallen apart.

Netflix was the most recent company to try, hiring directing siblings Adam and Aaron Nee, the duo behind 2015’s indie movie ‘Band of Robbers’ and 2022’s ‘The Lost City’, who were also attached to a Sony attempt, working on the script with ‘Man Of Steel’s David S. Goyer.

Knight is working from a new draft of the script by Chris Butler –– to whom he’s already connected, as Butler has written or directed several animated movies produced by Knight’s Laika stop-motion animation studio.

The new movie reportedly (there has been no official confirmation) revolves around 9–year-old Prince Adam crashing to Earth in a spaceship and being separated from his Magical Sword –– the only link to his home on Eternia.

After tracking it down almost two decades later, Adam is whisked back across space to defend his home planet against the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat such a powerful villain, Prince Adam first will need to uncover the mysteries of his past and become He-Man — the most powerful man in the universe.

Here’s what Amazon MGM Studios head of film production and development Julie Rapaport said about the new development:

“We’re thrilled to bring the beloved Masters of the Universe to life and couldn’t be more excited to announce the immensely talented Nicholas Galitzine as our He-Man. Joining forces with director Travis Knight, Mattel, and Escape Artists, this reintroduction of the character and his universe will be an epic film that will delight audiences from here to Eternia.”

    • Actor Shannen Doherty has died aged 53.
    • She was best known for small screen roles on ‘Beverly Hills 90210’ and ‘Charmed’.
    • Doherty also appeared in the likes of ‘Heathers’ and ‘Mallrats’.

Shannen Doherty, who rose to fame starring on teen drama ‘Beverly Hills 90210’ has died. She had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, entering remission in 2017, but by 2019 it had returned and begun to spread.

Doherty’s longtime publicist Leslie Sloane revealed news of her death:

“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress, Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13th, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease. The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.”

Shannen Maria Doherty was born on April 12th, 1971, in Memphis, Tennessee. Her family moved to Los Angeles so she could pursue an acting career from a young age. A role on the series ‘Father Murphy’ brought her to the attention of Michael Landon, and she was cast on ‘Little House on the Prairie’ at the age of 11.

She recalled her time on the show fondly on her Let’s Be Clear podcast:

”It was really the experience on ‘Little House’ that spurred that passion on for being an actor, and it was having a mentor like Michael Landon. And I don’t care what anybody else’s experience was like. I know the truth about that man, and he was just unbelievable. So, so, so talented, so kind, so considerate. It really helped shape me.”

Following ‘Little House’, she had a recurring role on ‘Our House’ alongside Wilford Brimley and a variety of other roles, though two major performances stand out.

If there is one role for which Doherty will be truly remembered, it is that of fresh-faced brunette Brenda Walsh on Fox’s ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’. Along with her twin brother Brandon, played by Jason Priestly, the Walshes were the classic fish-out-of-water family that moved from Minnesota to Beverly Hills and tried to fit in with the L.A. rich kids.

The show became a massive hit, spurred by some controversies over subjects it tackled, though Doherty developed a reputation for being difficult on set and friction with her co-stars. She left the show in 1994, though did return for several episodes of reboot ‘90210’ and meta take ‘BH90210’.

Her other big part was as witch Prue Halliwell on ‘Charmed’, the oldest of three magical sisters who work together to battle evil. She directed several episodes and then left the show at the end of the third season, amid more reports of tension with her fellow stars.

Her TV work also included ‘North Shore’, ‘Riverdale’ and shows she produced, including ‘Breaking Up With Shannen Doherty’, where she helped people get out of bad relationships.

  • KJ Apa and Isabel May Cast as the ‘Wonder Twins’

Back in February, word first arrived that DC was looking to promote super-powered siblings Zan and Jayna, better known as the ‘Wonder Twins,’ from cartoons and cameos to their own live action movie.

Now we know who will be playing the pair, as ‘Riverdale’s KJ Apa and ‘1883’s Isabel May have landed the lead roles.

Aliens Zan and Jayna, unlike many of their comics stablemates, made their debut on TV in Hanna Barbera animated series ‘The All-New Super Friends Hour’ in 1977. Created by Norman Maurer, they went on to appear on other series before making their debut in comic books based on the show and became part of the wider DC Universe.

They’re best known for their catchphrase, “Wonder Twins power, activate!” and touching hands, leading Jayne to transform into any animal and Zan into any form of water. Which might not seem like the greatest combo when you are extraterrestrial crime fighters.

Still, they do at least have a sidekick, a monkey pal called Gleek, who is intelligent, communicates via sign language and has a stretchable, prehensile tail, which comes in handy.

They’ve rarely been given major attention, popping up on the likes of cartoon series ‘Teen Titans Go!’ and live-action show ‘The Flash’.

Now, though, ‘Black Adam’ writer Adam Sztykiel is the person who will look to bring them up to date even further and make them work on their own. But as is usual for a film like this, the plot is being kept locked behind a shield of secrecy. Sztykiel is also directing the movie.

In other DC Comics movie news, Leslie Grace, the star of ‘Batgirl’ has been enthusiastically talking up working on her own superhero saga, with ‘Bad Boys For Life’ directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah now shepherding the movie through post-production.

As part of an interview with Variety, Grace explained that the mood on set shifted noticeably when Michael Keaton arrived in his Batman suit. “Our directors were like two little kids,” she laughs. “They’re legit Batman nerds openly. He’s Batman, man! I couldn’t even believe that I was sharing space with Batman. I want to say more, but I can’t. It was insane, surreal, incredible. It was the stuff of dreams really.”

And despite opining about the night shoots and squeezing into her costume, Grace seems excited to continue on to a sequel, even if she offers a caution that the initial outing must still be a success. “We got to see this first one first,” she says.

“But there’s definitely some talks about what it could be. I’ve seen some of what we’ve shot, obviously in the playback and stuff like that, and it’s insane. We’ve already been talking about where we do take this from here, because there’s so much that happens in this film. There are a lot of different themes in the plot that we touch on. It’s not just the action. There’s a love story. There’s this father-daughter relationship. There’s looking at the world through a lens that isn’t just black and white and seeing the color and the spectrum between things.”

‘Batgirl’ should be on HBO Max this year.

‘Katy Keene’ Trailer Reveals The CW’s ‘Riverdale’ Spinoff

    The CW

Goodbye “Riverdale,” hello New York City.

The CW unveiled the first trailer for “Katy Keene,” a spinoff of “Riverdale” that is set in the Big Apple (and five years into the future).

“Pretty Little Liars” alum Lucy Hale stars as the titular character,  a  fashion designer who welcomes her new roommate, aspiring musician Josie (Ashleigh Murray, from the flagship series).

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KpPusuHMaE&feature=youtu.be

Their world is populated with kindred-spirit struggling artists, including mysterious socialite Pepper Smith (Julia Chan) and Broadway-bound performer Jorge Lopez — and his drag queen alter ego, Ginger (Jonny Beauchamp).

While their climb to the top is rife with obstacles, this found family will stop at nothing to see their names in lights.

“Riverdale” has focused on mysteries involving cults, a Gargoyle King, and underground prison fight circuits. But it looks like its spinoff will up the glam quotient.

“Katy Keene” will premiere on The CW sometime next season.

  • Shannen Doherty Joins ‘Riverdale’ Tribute to Luke Perry

Shannen Doherty Joins ‘Riverdale’ Tribute to Luke Perry

    Fox

“Riverdale’s” tribute to the late Luke Perry will feature a very special guest.

The Season 4 episode, which is scheduled to air October 9 on The CW, has enlisted Perry’s friend and former “Beverly Hills, 90210” co-star Shannen Doherty.  Titled “In Memoriam,” it will reflect on Perry’s legacy and the imprint his character, Fred Andrews, had on the show.

Perry died in March at the age of 52 after suffering a major stroke.

Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa announced the news at San Diego Comic-Con on Sunday. He described Doherty’s role as “very emotional.”

Perry and Doherty starred together on “90210” for four seasons. They renewed their friendship in 2015 when both were dealing with health issues.

Aguirre-Sacasa also revealed that he and Perry had been planning an appearance by Doherty for some time. It was “something that Luke wanted to happen since Season 1,” he said.

“They were such good friends, and when we were putting together this tribute episode, we wanted to make it as special as possible, and so we asked Shannen to do a pivotal, super-emotional role. She read the script and immediately said yes. It’s very impactful.”

Doherty is also starring in “BH90210,” Fox’s meta revival of the series. Most of the original cast — Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling — will play versions of themselves as they try to mount a revival of the teen soap.

Perry was not attached to the project, which was announced just before he died. “BH90210” will also honor Perry in some way.

‘Riverdale’ Season 4: Luke Perry Tribute Is the ‘Most Important Episode’

    Luke Perry in Riverdale
    The CW

The first episode of “Riverdale” Season 4 will be the most important one. Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa made his feelings about the upcoming Luke Perry tribute clear in a tweet Wednesday. In fact, he shared that they may never make an episode more special than the one that will honor both Perry and his character, Fred Andrews.

“Probably the most important episode of #Riverdale we’ll do this year, if not ever,” Aguirre-Sacasa wrote. “A tribute to our fallen friend. Thankful for this opportunity to honor Luke & Fred.”

The episode is set to air on Wednesday, Oct. 4, seven months after Perry’s untimely death. The actor suffered a stroke in March and he never recovered. “Riverdale” Season 3 was being filmed at the time, leading production to be temporarily halted.

Following the tragedy, the show’s creative team opted not to fully address Fred Andrews’s absence until Season 4; they wanted to pay tribute to Perry, as Deadline notes. They’re getting their chance, and fans will get to partake in the bittersweet farewell as Season 4 kicks off. It’ll be an emotional ride.

Luke Perry’s Last ‘Riverdale’ Episode Airs This Week

    The CW

“Riverdale” is saying its final farewell to Luke Perry.

The late actor died March 4 after suffering a massive stroke. This week brings his final appearance on The CW’s Archie comics drama.

“Riverdale” showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa revealed on Twitter that Wednesday’s episode will be the last time viewers  Perry play Fred Andrews, Archie’s father.

Aguirre-Sacasa has not elaborated on how the show plans to write out Perry. Cast member Cole Sprouse did say there are plans to address Perry’s death.

“I can’t go too much into the spoilers of it, but we do have something planned narratively,” he said. “We dedicated some of the episodes to him.”

Fred Andrews was a wise mentor to his son, but it was a role that Perry had to fight for. “Initially we were afraid of casting former teen idols because we thought that would be too kitschy,” casting director David Rapaport recently told EW. “But Luke [Perry] came in and fought for the role [of Archie’s dad]. We had to make a decision: Do we do this or do we not do this. Part of the show is there’s so much nostalgia involved, so there is something about having a former heartthrob play the father of a heartthrob.”

Perry’s last film appearance comes in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” opening July 26.

“Katy Keene” follows four aspiring artists, including independent 20something Katy, trying to make it on Broadway, on the runway, and in the recording studio.

She joins previously announced cast members Camille HydeLucien Laviscount, Ashleigh Murray, Jonny Beauchamp, and Julia Chan (aka Julia Taylor Ross).

‘Riverdale’ Shuts Down Production Following Luke Perry’s Death

    Diyah Pera/The CW

The sudden death of actor Luke Perry on Monday sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, with fans, friends, and fellow celebs taking to social media to share their remembrances of the star, and offer condolences to his loved ones. Some of the most touching tributes have come from Perry’s colleagues on “Riverdale,” the CW series on which he starred.

In a joint statement issued on Monday, “Riverdale” executive producers Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, and Jon Goldwater, along with Warner Bros. Television and The CW, praised the late actor not only for his contributions to the series, but the impact he made on the cast and crew behind the scenes as well.

    The statement said:

“We are deeply saddened to learn today about the passing of Luke Perry. A beloved member of the ‘Riverdale,’ Warner Bros. and CW family, Luke was everything you would hope he would be: an incredibly caring, consummate professional with a giant heart, and a true friend to all. A father figure and mentor to the show’s young cast, Luke was incredibly generous, and he infused the set with love and kindness. Our thoughts are with Luke’s family during this most difficult time.”

Perry had played Fred Andrews, father of Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), since the show’s debut. Molly Ringwald, who plays Archie’s mother and Fred’s ex-wife, Mary Andrews, shared her shock and grief at Perry’s sudden passing on Twitter.

“My heart is broken,” Ringwald wrote. “I will miss you so much Luke Perry. Sending all my love to your family.”

The “Riverdale” writers room also took to Twitter to pay tribute to the star.

The group called Perry “a joyful and vibrant soul,” adding, “You will be missed but most certainly your legacy will be remembered forever.”

It’s not yet clear how Perry’s death will be dealt with on the show, which is currently shooting. Production was shut down on the series for the day on Monday.

Perry died on Monday after suffering a massive stroke last week. He was 52.
