Director Ridley Scott‘s 1979 film ‘Alien,’ which featured Sigourney Weaver‘s first appearance as series hero Ripley, spawned one of the most successful and durable science-fiction franchises in cinema history.

The series continued in 1986 with director James Cameron‘s sequel, ‘Aliens,’ which once again starred Weaver as Ripley. Weaver would return for two more outings, ‘Alien³‘ and ‘Alien Resurrection‘ before the franchise would be merged with the ‘Predator‘ series with ‘AVP: Alien vs. Predator‘ and ‘Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem‘.

Scott would return to the franchise to direct two prequels, ‘Prometheus‘ and ‘Alien: Covenant,’ and now is a producer on the latest installment, ‘Alien: Romulus,’ which was directed by Fede Álvarez and opens in theaters on August 16th.

In honor of the new release, Moviefone is counting down every ‘Alien’ movie ever made, including the ‘AVP’ movies and ‘Romulus’.

    Let’s begin!

  • Andrew Scott Stars in the ‘Ripley’ Series Teaser

    Preview:

    • The first ‘Ripley’ teaser is online.
    • Andrew Scott, Dakota Fanning and Johnny Flynn star.
    • The new series lands on Netflix in April.

Given the proliferation of spin-offs and prequels, you might be forgiven, upon seeing the title ‘Ripley’, that the new Netflix series focuses on the earlier days (or somehow, through science fiction trickery, continues the story) of Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley from the ‘Alien’ movies.

But from a first look at the teaser for the show, it all becomes clear: instead, what we have is the latest adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley’.

This one comes from Steven Zaillian, who has quite the resume –– a regular collaborator of Ridley Scott, Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, he’s also an accomplished filmmaker in his own right, having directed the likes of ‘Searching for Bobby Fischer’ and re-written many scripts in his time.

The story has, of course, already been brought famously to screens by Anthony Minghella in the 1999 film named for the novel, starring Matt Damon, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow, but this new version appears to take inspiration from other books as well the main ‘Ripley’ tome.

    What’s the story of ‘Ripley’?

Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott) is a grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York. When he’s hired by a wealthy man to travel to Italy to try to convince his vagabond son (Johnny Flynn’s Dickie Greenleaf) to return home, Tom’s acceptance of the job is the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder.

Zaillian writes and directs all eight episodes, and from the looks of the first teaser, has shot the whole thing in crisp monochrome to give it some standout style.

The cast for the show also includes Dakota Fanning, Elliot Sumner, Maurizio Lombardi, Margherita Buy and John Malkovich.

Scott, who is garnering plenty of attention thanks to superb work in the likes of ‘All of Us Strangers’, looks set to receive more acclaim for this. And the teaser spotlights an excellent ensemble around him.

When will ‘Ripley’ be on our screens?

All eight episodes of ‘Ripley’ are scheduled to arrive on Netflix on April 4th. If you ask us, given his less-than-truthful nature, April 1st might have made sense, but that doesn’t fit the streamer’s release policy.

  • Sigourney Weaver Surprised the Cast of That ‘Alien’ High School Play (Which You Can Now Watch Online)

Sigourney Weaver Surprised the Cast of That ‘Alien’ High School Play (Which You Can Now Watch Online)

    20th Century Fox

Earlier this year, students at a New Jersey high school took it upon themselves to adapt classic sci-fi flick “Alien” into a play, staging an elaborate production that garnered the attention of the official series social media page, as well as the film’s director, Ridley Scott. This past weekend, the most famous face from the franchise declared her love for the show — and appeared in person to give the kids the thrill of their lives.

None other than Sigourney Weaver — who starred as iconic badass Ripley in the “Alien” films — surprised the cast of North Bergen High School’s “Alien The Play” during a performance on Friday, timed to the annual celebration of Alien Day (4/26, for LV-426). The encore production was funded in part thanks to a generous donation from Scott and his company, Scott Free, but Weaver’s attendance may have been even more valuable to the cast and crew, based on this sweet video of them meeting the actress backstage.

Speaking of videos, someone took it upon themselves to record the entire “Alien The Play” production, which you can watch in full if you’re so inclined:

The video/audio quality isn’t the greatest, but it offers a decent idea of what these kids accomplished. Cheers to them, and cheers to Weaver and the rest of the “Alien” gang for supporting this production.

  • 25 Greatest Horror Movie Heroines Ever, Ranked

%Slideshow-373474%Why is the horror audience mostly female? One reason has to be the genre’s long tradition of heroines, scream queens, or final girls.

They’re the last ones left standing in the movie’s final act, taking on the killer or monster while — armed with little more than pluck and righteous anger (and the occasional sharp object). Then again, who doesn’t enjoy watching a horror movie lead character overcome their fear and act like a badass? While not all horror movie heroines face-off with the Big Bad by the end of the film, they do suffer through all the jump-scares with us. It’s a miracle we they come out alive.

Here are 25 of the best horror movie heroines who conquered demons — both internal and external — before conquering the multiplex.

  • Neill Blomkamp Reveals New ‘Alien’ Concept Art Featuring Ripley

alien, alien concept art, ripley, sigourney weaver, michael biehnDirector Neill Blomkamp is showing off some nifty new concept art for his upcoming “Alien” flick, and it features some old favorites from the franchise.

The illustrated image, which Blomkamp shared on his Instagram page, showcases Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and Corporal Hicks (Michael Biehn), who both appear tense and serious. They’re face to face with someone sporting a bulky, metallic-looking suit, which also has the South Korean flag on it.

#alien going very well. Love this project

A photo posted by Brownsnout (@neillblomkamp) on

What any of that means is anyone’s guess, but it’s a cool inside look at the filmmaking process. As Blomkamp said in the picture’s caption, the production is “going very well” and he “love[s] this project.”

It remains to be seen whether or not fans will love it, considering it will ignore the last two films in the franchise. But the return of Weaver and Biehn bodes well for the flick, and Blomkamp seems like such a fan of the material, that we’re sure he’ll do it justice. (Having original “Alien” director Ridley Scott on board as a producer doesn’t hurt, either.)

Stay tuned for more — it seems Blomkamp is only just getting started offering fans behind-the-scenes glimpses of the project.
