American awards committees and guilds have been dominating the season (and the Oscar nominations drop on Tuesday), but today it was the turn of the British Academy of Film and Television Art, which delivered its movie nominees.

And, at least in terms of the nominees, it was a very good year for Netflix, which saw the latest adaptation of ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ collect an impressive 14 nominations, the most of any movie this year.

Also likely to be happy? A24, which saw ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ do well again, gaining momentum back partly thanks to its haul at the Critics Choice Awards this past weekend.

A fair amount of familiar names and titles from the season popped up this time, with ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ and its cast logging plenty of nominations alongside ‘Tár’, ‘Elvis’ and Guillermo del Toro’s animated take on ‘Pinocchio’.

The BAFTAs were also a place for movies that had seen little attention so far, including murder mystery comedy drama ‘See How They Run’ and investigative drama ‘She Said’ appearing on lists, albeit outside the major categories.

Perhaps most interestingly were names that didn’t make the cut––though Steven Spielberg’s ‘The Fabelmans’ appeared in Best Original Screenplay, the director was tellingly missing from the director category and the movie didn’t make Best Film. Likewise, box office heavy hitters such as ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ made little impact on the main categories.

Indeed, the director category was a much more diverse offering than some other awards, the likes of James Cameron notable by their absence while ‘The Woman King’s Gina Prince-Bythewood and ‘Decision to Leave’s Park Chan-Wook secured nominations.

And, of course, there was a focus on British talent and output, some of which is unlikely to appear much elsewhere, but we’re glad to see the likes of ‘Brian and Charles’ and ‘Good Luck to You, Leo Grande’, which looked like it was going to be a contender earlier in 2022 but has largely faded beyond a few mentions.

This year’s BAFTA ceremony will take place at Royal Festival Hall in London on February 19th, with Richard E. Grant hosting, pointing to what will hopefully be an entertaining evening.

  • Richard E. Grant to Star as a Drag Queen in ‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’

    20th Century Fox

Can You Ever Forgive Me?” Oscar nominee Richard E. Grant has lined up his next role:  He’ll play a  legendary drag queen in the film adaptation of the popular British stage musical “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.”

The musical was based on the true story of Jamie Campbell, a 16-year-old boy who became a drag queen. His story was first documented in the BBC documentary, “Jamie: Drag Queen at 16,” which explored how the teenager overcame prejudice and the bullies at his school to become a drag sensation.

Newcomer Max Harwood will play Jamie, Grant will play Jamie’s mentor Hugo, whose stage name is Loco Channelle.

“Catastrophe” star Sharon Horgan has been cast as Jamie’s teacher and Sarah Lancashire (“Happy Valley”) as his mother. Shobna Gulati, from the original stage cast, will reprise her role of Ray.

Also on board: The original stage production team, including director Jonathan Butterell, writer Tom MacRae, composer Dan Gillespie Sells and choreographer Kate Prince.

Filming will begin in Sheffield, England, on June 24.

The creative team released this statement:

“Who would have thought when Jamie Campbell first put on his prom dress, that eight years later we would have brought together the best of British and Irish acting talent to tell his story. As well as launching a brand new star in Max Harwood to play Jamie himself, we’re so thrilled to welcome Sarah, Richard and Sharon to the Jamie family. Now the party’s really getting started.”

Grant, who attained cult status with the 1987 British comedy “Withnail and I,” will next be seen in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”

  • Richard E. Grant, Sally Field Join AMC Anthology Series ‘Dispatches From Elsewhere’

    Fox Searchlight/Netflix

Jason Segel’s anthology series “Dispatches From Elsewhere” just added Oscar nominee Richard E. Grant and two-time Oscar winner Sally Field.

The hour-long series is about a group of ordinary people who discover a puzzle “hiding just behind the veil of everyday life”. The series will include “viewer engagement elements across multiple platforms.” So it’s not the next “Bandersnatch,” but maybe viewers will get to vote on plotlines?

The series is created by and stars “How I Met Your Mother” alum Segel. It’s scheduled to begin production on 10 episodes this summer in Philadelphia.

Eve Lindley, who is best known as “Hot Carla” on on “Mr Robot,” has also joined the cast.

Grant’s films include “Withnail and I,” “Logan,” and “The Iron Lady”; he was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for “Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Field (who also has 3 Emmys) most recent played Dr. Greta Mantleray on the Netflix mini-series “Maniac.”
