Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery‘ is the third film in the murder mystery franchise starring Daniel Craig as detective Benoit Blanc. Moviefone was in attendance at a recent press conference featuring writer and director Rian Johnson and star Josh O’Connor, where they reflected on the making of the movie.

    1) Rian Johnson Says ‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery’ Is A Very Personal Story

Rian Johnson was asked if writing this third film was easier now that he already had two under his belt to which he replied no, because it was very personal for him.

Rian Johnson: Absolutely not. This is by far the hardest thing I’ve ever written, actually. This one was tough. And that means at the tail end of it, I’m just even more proud of kind of how it came out and just feel so good about it, but during the process itself — and it wasn’t necessarily because the mystery itself was more complex, although it kind of was. It was more the thematic elements of it. Because the movie’s about faith. That’s something that is very personal to me. I grew up very religious. I was very personally Christian when I was younger, up through my early 20s. It was just a big part of my life. And I am not a believer anymore.

    2) Josh O’Connor Reveals His Faith Helped Him With This Role

Josh O’Connor talks how he was able to walk a fine line between comedy and tragedy due to his own faith.

Josh O’Connor: From a practical sense, this job is the greatest luxury and gift to be able to do it. I just want to try everything, and whether I’m good at it or not sometimes. But really, you’re able to do that with someone like Rian. And, first of all, the early conversations about faith was a big get-in for me. And that was something that, like Rian, has been in my mind for a long time. I grew up Irish Catholic and church going, and I think have quite a strong faith. It doesn’t necessarily have a clear home. And so all those questions that Rian was asking were ever-present in my life. And so I say that to say that, I think underneath, you are able to dance and do the comedy side if underneath there’s something of a profound truth bubbling underneath that role. And Rian’s so good at bringing those moments out. And it means that you are able to dance that fine line between comedy and grief and tragedy, which is very often the way.

    3) Josh O’Connor Says There Is Nothing Like A ‘Knives Out’ Set

Take one look at an ensemble cast for a Rian Johnson ‘Knives Out’ movie and it is clear that top-notch actors want to work with him. Josh O’Connor reveals there is truly nothing like the set of one of these movies.

Josh O’Connor: Rian alluded to, and I can vouch for it, Rian’s an actor’s director. And so, so much of his attention, which is extraordinary, if you think about it, obviously, where Rian’s come from and the films he’s come from, he has that in his locker. But when you walk on a Knives Out set, I mean, the sets are extraordinary. The craftspeople are the best, second to none. And so the scale of it is bigger than anything I’ve ever done before. And yet, the time that Rian gives his actors makes it feel no different to being on set with Kelly Reichardt and just figuring out those same questions of like, what is stopping Father Jud from getting what he wants? What has he misunderstood? How does he overcome that? There was one day I was sat next to Rian on the monitor, and Rian was completely entranced. They weren’t filming, but Rian was looking and it was just Daniel, he had his headphones on, and he was doing his thing. And Rian was just loving watching Daniel do his thing, getting into the space.

    4) Every ‘Knives Out’ Film Is Relevant To The Times We Are Living In

(L to R) Josh O’Connor and Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc in 'Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery'. Cr. John Wilson/Netflix © 2025.

Rian Johnson thinks that what works so well about his franchise is that each movie is relevant to the times when it comes out. Because of this, he is not afraid to dicuss things like politics and religion.

Rian Johnson: From the first movie, part of the marching orders I had for myself with these films, and part of what makes them exciting, I love this genre so much. It’s a genre, though, that growing up, I think all of us have mostly seen done as period pieces, usually set in England, and kind of in timeless little villages or something. With the first movie, a big realization for me was that’s not what Agatha Christie did. She never wrote period pieces. She was always writing to her time and her moment. And her books, even later in her career, that were written in the 60s are set in the 60s. And also, I think the murder mystery form, it’s just, because you’re building these suspects, you’re building this little power structure within the suspects. Someone at the top is gonna get killed. It’s a great way of creating a microcosm of society. And so it seemed like a very potent tool to talk about, and hopefully in a fun way that’s still entertaining, to talk about the present moment.

    5) Rian Johnson Is Already Working On The Next ‘Knives Out’ Film

When asked if there is potential for another film in the franchise, Rian Johnson explained that he is working on something else right now, but that he and Daniel Craig have been discussing Benoit Blanc’s next adventure already.

Rian Johnson: I’m writing my next film. It’s not one of these, it’s something original. It’s not because I’m burnt out on these. In fact, I’m energized after making this one and I really hope to come back. I’m already thinking. Daniel and I are already spit balling about what the next one could be down the line. To answer the second part of your question, would I ever let anyone else make these? It’s mine, it’s mine. They’ll pry it out of my cold dead hands. And similarly, if Daniel and I ever stop having fun and we both decide or he decides he doesn’t wanna do it anymore, then as far as I’m concerned, the series is over. This whole thing is just, it’s me and him making these movies together. That’s the joy of it for me. People can make other mysteries all they want, but this is something that’s for him and me. That’s what defines it for me.

What’s the story of ‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery’?

When young priest Jud Duplenticy (Josh O’Connor) is sent to assist charismatic firebrand Monsignor Jefferson Wicks (Josh Brolin), it’s clear that all is not well in the pews.

After a sudden and seemingly impossible murder rocks the town, the lack of an obvious suspect prompts local police chief Geraldine Scott (Mila Kunis) to join forces with renowned detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) to unravel a mystery that defies all logic.

In theaters on limited release from November 26 before heading to Netflix on December 12 is ‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,’ the third in director Rian Johnson’s compelling mystery movie series.

Back as usual is Daniel Craig (‘Knives Out’), once more playing smart detective Benoit Blanc, joined by a new ensemble that includes Josh O’Connor (‘Challengers’), Josh Brolin (‘No Country for Old Men’), Glenn Close (‘Fatal Attraction’), Andrew Scott (‘All of Us Strangers’), Cailee Spaeny (‘Alien: Romulus’), Kerry Washington (‘Ray’) and Jeremy Renner (‘The Hurt Locker’).

Writer/director Rian Johnson breathed fresh, sharply-written life into the mystery genre with 2019’s ‘Knives Out.’ And if ‘Glass Onion’ in 2022 was a seemingly lesser (if still entertaining) follow-up, it’s relief to report that third outing ‘Wake Up Dead Man’ has much more in common –– especially in terms of quality character work and central crime –– with the first movie.

Johnson had always intended to make more movies featuring quirky, charismatic sleuth Benoit Blanc and a healthy deal from Netflix means we now have the third.

‘Wake Up Dead Man’ is a considerable step up from the second film, rivalling the original for how it weaves and then unravels its mystery. Part of the advantage is keeping Craig’s Blanc out of the story initially to give the other characters time to breathe. He still gets plenty of superb moments, but the ensemble as a whole has the space it needs to work.

Johnson has also made a beautiful-looking film, using the gloomy upstate New York setting (albeit filmed in the UK) to really enhance the storytelling.

Craig is a natural as Blanc at this point, and the faith-wrangling storyline really gives him something to chew on. But praise also to Josh O’Connor, Josh Brolin, Thomas Haden Church and Glenn Close in particular, who are all fantastic.

‘Wake Up Dead Man’ is certainly one of the best mystery movies to be released in the last couple of years, and happily stands alongside the first movie while nodding to its inspirations.

Director Rian Johnson appeared to tease the third of his ‘Knives Out’ series of mysteries and walked on to the stage accompanied by a “Who done it” type mystery theme.

“I love a good surprise. This is the third Benoit Blanc movie that we’ve made and one thing that we strove to do with each one of them is to keep the audience guessing. It’s important for us to figure out new ways every time so just when you think you have it figured out, a new twist comes a long that you were not expecting. That’s what makes these movies special.”

Then, each member of the cast including Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, Kerry Washington and Jeremy Renner, came out one by one to one-up the previous co-star. Washington appeared with a T-shirt gun to entice the crowd, but not to be outdone, Renner then appeared with two T-shirt guns and received an extremely warn welcome from the fans.

Affleck had this to say about the movie:

“It’s great to be back together again on screen and we loved making this movie. It channels some of our all-time favorites like ‘Heat’ and ‘Training Day’.

In the film, Affleck and Damon play Miami cops who discover over 20 million dollars in cash hidden in a suspect’s house, which leads to distrust among their characters and the other police officers.

A new trailer for the film was shown to the audience at the Forum and during the broadcast but is not currently available online. Damon introduced the teaser trailer by saying:

“I recently had the great pleasure of playing the creature in Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’. Guillermo is a real-life genius and I’m immensely grateful to be in the film. I’m proud of the work we all put into it.”

Guillermo del Toro himself, as well as actors Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth then took the stage to greet the fans and introduce the teaser trailer for the film.

“Thank you. I’m Guillermo del Toro. This is for me the culmination of a journey that has occupied most of my life. I first read Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ as a kid and saw Boris Karloff in what became for me an almost a religious state. Monsters have become my personal belief system. There are strands of Frankenstein throughout my films, ‘Cronos’, ‘Blade’, ‘Hellboy’, big time on ‘Pinocchio’, and a long, long, etc. Exploring the relationship between humanity and monsters, creator and creation, father and son, has consumed my stories again and again. I wanted to make this film even before I had a camera, and I have actively been pursuing it now for 25 years. It has grown so close to me that now it is my biography. Now, tonight here, finally, we can share it with you.”

The stage was then set up like a sports broadcast with Rich Eisen interviewing Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, and of course, Adam Sandler. Several supporting cast members including Jon Lovitz and an actor dressed as Abraham Lincoln were in the audience and asked clearly scripted questions.

After that, Sandler had this to say before introducing the final trailer for the sequel.

“First of all, Mr. Lincoln, great job on everything. Netflix, thanks for everything. How about today? This was fun. I’m hoping we have a lot of these. Now I have a question for all you nice people out there. Would anyone like to see the trailer for our new film?”

‘Poker Face’ Season 2 receives 8 out of 10 stars.

Arriving on Peacock on May 8th with its first three episodes (followed by one weekly), ‘Poker Face’ sees the welcome return of Natasha Lyonne’s gravelly voiced, mystery-prone human lie-detector Charlie Cale for more mysteries.

And in keeping with the first season, this new run of episodes features a murderer’s row (sometimes literally, at least in story terms) of guest stars who play a fun, fresh batch of characters.

Created by ‘Knives Out’ filmmaker Rian Johnson in conjunction with star/executive producer Lyonne, the first season of ‘Poker Face’ was a delightful throwback to the days of ‘Columbo’ or ‘Murder, She Wrote,’ where we saw a crime –– usually a murder, but cleverly this season, not every time –– happen, and then introduced our protagonist, who would end up solving it.

Season 2 of the show is, if anything, even better, leaning harder on the supporting cast still letting Lyonne do her offbeat thing.

    Script and Direction

The show features writing talent who have established themselves in a variety of genres and the scripting standard for ‘Poker Face’s new run of episodes –– 10 of the 12 were provided to press ahead of time –– remains resolutely high.

And in a welcome move, the mysteries are given a little more time to develop, making full use of a wonderful supporting cast, who bring a raft of characters to life. It’s easy to see why actors are attracted to coming and playing on the show.

Added to that, while we do see the mystery play out before Charlie Cale saunters on screen each week, the complexity and originality also remain high –– crimes including a variety of siblings, a laundry room and a gym are just a few of the stories on offer here.

Winding through them all, though seemingly finding a relatively early conclusion is Charlie’s issues with the crime bosses who have been hunting her down. Still, the real pleasure is seeing how she just can’t keep away from murder mysteries no matter how hard she tries.

Johnson kicks off the season directing the first episode, while Lyonne is also again behind the camera. The key here is that ‘Poker Face’ creates its own look each episode, while all feeling of a piece, and the creativity remains high.

From New York apartment buildings to stately mansions and even the inside of a private jet at a small airport, it all looks good and serves the story. There’s also a timelessness to the show’s tone and feel (even with modern gadgetry such as fitness trackers) that could have had it be set at any point in the last few decades.

    Cast and Performances

Kumail Nanjiani in 'Poker Face' season 2. Photo: Sarah Shatz/Peacock.
Kumail Nanjiani in ‘Poker Face’ season 2. Photo: Sarah Shatz/Peacock.

Natasha Lyonne has been the main component of the show since the beginning and she’s such a classic character albeit with its own fresh spin. She’s certainly in the 1970s and 1980s detective style, and yet Lyonne brings a winning combination of smarts and vulnerability to the role.

Charlie’s looking for somewhere to put down roots and yet she keeps winding up in the middle of murder scenarios, her natural ability to sniff out liars landing her in hot water (and in one case, a hot sauna) time and time again.

Lyonne brings a fascinating vibe to Charlie, making her stand out from your average TV ‘tec, and her kooky sensibilities means the show comes really to life whenever she’s on screen.

Which is to take nothing away from a quality guest cast, with actors clearly having lined up to appear. ‘Wicked’s Cynthia Erivo is a lot of fun (even if we can only imagine the workload) playing multiple identical sisters in the initial episodes, squabbling over their recently deceased mother’s estate and –– in the case of one of them –– going too far to secure her portion.

The reliable likes of Jason Ritter, Richard Kind, Gaby Hoffman, Kumail Nanjiani (styled in a way we haven’t really seen from him before), David Krumholtz, Margo Martindale, Awkwafina and John Mulaney all join the fun, making an impact and keeping Charlie on her toes.

    Final thoughts

There is always the worry that such a unique show as ‘Poker Face’ could work for a season and then never quite be as effective again, but this series proves with every episode that it’s far from a one-trick pony.

Provided the team feels they have new mysteries in them, and can keep the level up, this is one that deserves to run and run.

What’s the plot of ‘Poker Face’ Season 2?

The mystery-of-the-week series follows Natasha Lyonne’s Charlie Cale, who has an extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying.

She hits the road with her Plymouth Barracuda and with every stop encounters a new cast of characters and strange crimes she can’t help but solve.

  • Simon Kinberg to Write and Produce New ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy

    Preview:

    • Simon Kinberg is reportedly developing a ‘Star Wars’ movie trilogy.
    • He’d write the movies and produce them with Kathleen Kennedy.
    • This trilogy is apparently about new characters.

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before.

A respected name in filmmaking (and particularly in this case, genre producing) has been hired by Lucasfilm to come up with new ‘Star Wars’ movies. Yes, it’s a story we’ve heard multiple times in the past –– more on that below –– with little to show for it so far.

Still, shoving cynicism aside for a moment, we’re certainly intrigued to learn via Deadline that Simon Kinberg is reportedly making a deal with Disney and Lucasfilm to develop, write and produce a new trilogy set in that galaxy far, far away.

And it’s not like Kinberg –– who has worked on a variety of projects in the past, including 20th Century Fox’s ‘X-Men’ movies, the ‘Deadpool’ films and a host of others more as a writer/producer –– doesn’t also already boast ‘Star Wars’ bona fides.

    3HV4LATmgAEYtGEKhjJuz1

He co-created animated series ‘Star Wars Rebels’ with Dave Filoni and Carrie Beck, with the show running for four seasons from 2014-2018, and certainly influencing the direction of the current live-action ‘Star Wars’ shows.

Kinberg was also a consultant on ‘Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens,’ the J.J. Abrams-directed movie that kicked off Disney’s expansion of the galaxy after it bought Lucasfilm.

And talking of the companies, we must still take all of this with enough salt to sate a Sarlacc, since neither Disney nor Lucasfilm is officially commenting just yet. Deadline mentions that Kinberg’s deal has closed, but these things usually have to wait for more solid confirmation, often at an event such as Star Wars Celebration, a Comic-Con or Disney’s D23.

What would the Simon Kinberg ‘Star Wars’ movies focus on?

1977’s ‘Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.’ Credit: Lucasfilm.

That question is, for now at least, largely a mystery.

While Deadline initially heard that it would continue the “Skywalker Saga” (AKA Episodes I through IX, which kicked off back in 1977 with the original ‘Star Wars’ before spawning the prequel and then sequel trilogies), that has since been shot down like a TIE Fighter by the Falcon, with focus now apparently on a new story with different characters (but with the door open for familiar faces to potentially appear).

Related Article: Simon Kinberg Reportedly to Oversee Future ‘Star Trek’ Movies for Paramount

A bigger issue is whether this actually comes to fruition. After all, as recently as this May, Kinberg was reported as being involved with driving the ‘Star Trek’ movie franchise for Paramount, who we’re sure aren’t looking to repeat the situation with J.J. Abrams, who oversaw the first two movies of the studio’s rebooted ‘Trek’ movie universe before jumping ship to ‘Star Wars.’

And the future of ‘Star Wars’ on the big screen has seemed a little shaky of late, with famous genre names announced (or rumored) as working on new ‘Wars’ projects, only for nothing to come to screen.

    Which brings us to…

Who else has been reported as involved with new ‘Star Wars’ movies?

(L to R) Director James Mangold, Dave Filoni, and director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy at Star Wars Celebration 2023.
(L to R) Director James Mangold, Dave Filoni, and director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy at Star Wars Celebration 2023.

The list for this is fairly long, with little to show for it thus far.

Right now, we have current co-overlord of the ‘Star Wars’ TV universe, Jon Favreau, in post-production on a ‘Mandalorian and Grogu’ movie, which is scheduled to be on screens in May 2026.

Still in development are projects from Favreau’s main collaborator, Dave Filoni (who, like his colleague, would likely draw from their TV universe), James Mangold (who has been working on a film chronicling the birth of the Jedi order) and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who is aboard to direct a movie featuring Daisy Ridley’s Rey as she continues her own quest.

(L to R) Director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Daisy Ridley at Star Wars Celebration 2023.
(L to R) Director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Daisy Ridley at Star Wars Celebration 2023.

That latter movie has been having some issues getting its script together, with ‘Peaky BlindersSteven Knight the latest writer to depart.

Then we have Taika Waititi, who keeps talking about how he wants to move forward with his idea, while Donald Glover continues work on a story about Lando Calrissian, which was being touted as a Disney+ series but currently appears to be a movie.

As for those who have been reported as developing ‘Star Wars’ output that has yet to see much forward movement? They include ‘The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson (who was apparently going to make a trilogy but is currently busy with his big Netflix deal for the Benoit Blanc mystery movies and crime series ‘Poker Face,’ Patty Jenkins (whose ‘Rogue Squadron’ movie flits between active development and being grounded in a hangar) and ‘Game of Thrones’ duo David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who likewise were going to produce a new trilogy but are instead adapting beloved sci-fi novel ‘The Three Body Problem.’

What can we actually expect coming up from ‘Star Wars’?

'Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’ will be premiering on Disney+ in 2023.
‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’ will be premiering on Disney+ in 2023.

Besides Favreau’s ‘Mando’ movie, the next confirmed ‘Star Wars’ releases will be on the small screen, with ‘Skeleton Crew’ a ‘Goonies’–inspired adventure launching on Disney+ on December 3rd, and Season 2 of ‘Andor,’ due next year.

We also know that Filoni is at work on a second season of ‘Ahsoka,’ though that has yet to land a date.

‘Poker Face’ was created by ‘Knives Out’ and ‘The Last Jedi’ writer/director Rian Johnson, who also executive produced the first season, directed three episodes, and wrote two. Johnson will return as executive producer for Season 2, although he hasn’t said whether or not he’s directing or writing again (he’s currently shooting the third ‘Knives Out’ mystery with Daniel Craig).

Lyonne (who directed an episode in Season 1 and will do so again in Season 2) stars as Cale, who has the ability to determine whether someone is lying. She ends up fleeing Las Vegas as a result and heading across the country, where each week she meets different people and ends up getting drawn into a different mystery that she eventually solves.

Season 1’s cast included Adrien Brody, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Benjamin Bratt, Ron Perlman, Chloë Sevigny, Stephanie Hsu, Hong Chau, Ellen Barkin, Jameela Jamil, Rhea Perlman, and Judith Light. The latter won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy for her work in the show. A premiere date for Season 2 has yet to be announced.

Kicking off with the first, eponymous movie, the ‘Knives Out’ series began as Craig’s southern-fried investigator Blanc probed the secrets of the uptight, wealthy Thrombey clan after the mysterious death of patriarch Harlan (Christopher Plummer).

It featured the likes of Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette and Katherine Langford, alongside a breakout turn for Ana de Armas, who played Harlan’s nurse and came to factor much more deeply into the story.

Travelling far from the chilly Massachusetts mansion of the original, ‘Glass Onion’ found Blanc headed overseas.

As is befitting the new mystery, Johnson has yet to release any real details about the movie, so it’s a waiting game to see where Blanc ends up this time, and what he has to dig into.

It has only so far been described as his “most dangerous mystery yet.”

While O’Connor, Spaeny, Scott and now Close, Renner, Kunis and Washington are confirmed cast members, there have been rumors about Tom Hardy and Lindsay Lohan being in talks for the movie.

And could Hugh Grant return as Phillip, Blanc’s husband, who we briefly see in ‘Glass Onion’?

We trust Johnson, but if we had a wishlist for the new movie, we’d include the likes of Jennifer Coolidge, Florence Pugh, Dev Patel and Godzilla.

When will ‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery’ be on screens?

Netflix has yet to confirm a release date for the movie but given that Johnson is about to start he cameras rolling, we’d expect it to arrive in 2025. We’ll have to wait and see whether the company gives it a theatrical run (‘Glass Onion’ had a limited release before it hit the company’s servers).

    • Josh O’Connor and Cailee Spaeny are the latest addition to the ‘Knives Out’ movies.
    • Daniel Craig stars.
    • Rian Johnson is gearing up to direct the new film.

Having found success with his first ‘Knives Out’ movie back in 2019 ($300 million at the box office from a relatively thrifty $40 million budget), writer/director Rian Johnson signed a hefty $450 million deal with Netflix to produce two more, with producer Ram Bergman and star Daniel Craig along for the ride.

That deal has already borne fruit with the release of 2022’s ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’ and we learned late last week that the third movie in the series, ‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery’ is already gearing up for production.

Beyond Craig, who returns as drawling detective Benoit Blanc, we now know the first two cast members who will be part of the new mystery, as ‘ChallengersJosh O’Connor and ‘Priscilla’/‘Civil War’s Cailee Spaeny are confirmed as joining the cast.

And they’re not the only ones. Shortly after the duo’s casting was reported, news broke that Andrew Scott –– who won praise for his work in ‘All of Us Strangers’ on the big screen and Netflix’s recent TV adaptation ‘Ripley’, was reported by Variety as joining the cast.

What’s the story of ‘Knives Out’?

Kicking off with the first, eponymous movie, the ‘Knives Out’ series began as Craig’s southern-fried detective Blanc probed the secrets of the uptight, wealthy Thrombey clan after the mysterious death of patriarch Harlan (Christopher Plummer).

When tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) invites some of his nearest and dearest for a getaway on his private Greek island, it soon becomes clear that all is not perfect in paradise. And when someone turns up dead, who better than Blanc to peel back the layers of intrigue?

As well as Craig and Norton, the cast was once more stuffed with talent, including Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista.

    • Actor M. Emmet Walsh has died at the age of 88.
    • He was known for movies such as ‘Blood Simple’ and ‘Blade Runner’.
    • ‘Knives Out’ director Rian Johnson is among those who have paid tribute.

    M. Emmet Walsh, a reliable, fondly appreciated character actor known for corrupt cops, deadly crooks, and zany comedic performances, has died days short of his 89th birthday.

The actor’s manager Sandy Joseph and publicist Cynthia Snyder announced his death on Wednesday. Walsh died on Tuesday in St. Albans, Vermont, following cardiac arrest.

    Here’s Snyder’s statement:

“In a remarkable career spanning six decades on stage, in film and television, he became widely recognized for his standout portrayals of such memorable characters.”

Born in 1935 in Ogdensburg, New York, Walsh was raised in Vermont. He kicked off his acting career in typical fashion, with guest roles in TV series in the 1960s and 70s, but unlike some of his peers, he continued to juggle big and small screen jobs throughout his life (his most recent small screen appearance was 2022’s ‘American Gigolo’ series.)

Early TV gigs included small roles on shows such as ‘The Doctors’, ‘All in the Family’, ‘Ironside’ ‘Bonanza’, ‘The Waltons’, ‘The Rockford Files’ and the pilot of ‘The Bob Newhart Show’.

His first cinematic appearance was in an uncredited role in 1969’s ‘Midnight Cowboy’ but he got his initial credit on ‘Alice’s Restaurant’ the same year.

From there, Walsh grew an incredibly prolific acting career thanks to his ability to knock supporting roles out of the park.

His credits are too many to list in one obituary, but he’ll be remembered for movies such as ‘Blade Runner,’ ‘Blood Simple’, ‘Raising Arizona’, ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’, ‘Fletch’, ‘Back to School’, ‘Critters’, ‘What’s Up, Doc?’ ‘Slap Shot’ and as the crazed sniper hunting Steve Martin in ‘The Jerk’.

    M. Emmet Walsh: Roger Ebert’s Rule

Walsh has long been considered a reliable supporting performer –– so reliable, in fact, that legendary movie critic Roger Ebert once coined the Stanton-Walsh Rule, which held that “no movie featuring either Harry Dean Stanton or M. Emmet Walsh in a supporting role can be altogether bad,” though he admitted it wasn’t an infallible rule.

Walsh had his own rule when it came to his career:

“I approach each job thinking it might be my last, so it better be the best work possible. I want to be remembered as a working actor. I’m being paid for what I’d do for nothing.”

    M. Emmet Walsh: Tributes Paid

Director Rian Johnson, who worked with Walsh on ‘Knives Out’, was among those who paid tribute via social media:

Walsh is survived by his niece, nephew, grandniece and grandnephew.

Here’s what Walsh mused on his legacy to trade newspaper Drama-Logue in 1989:

“The parts are all your children. They’ll be my epitaph when they throw in that last shovelful of dirt.”
