Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Sophie Turner and director Carlson Young about their work on ‘Trust’, Turner’s first reaction to the screenplay, her approach to the role, the themes Young wanted to explore with the movie, and the challenges of directing a dog.

Moviefone: To begin with, Sophie, what was your first reaction to reading the screenplay and what were some of the aspects of your character that you were excited to explore on screen?

Sophie Turner: I mean, my initial reaction reading the screenplay was like, is there a higher power that has dropped this into my lap? Because it felt like it came at the perfect time in my life to get some anger out, and it was so cathartic. The thing I was so excited to play was, I mean, there are so many elements that she’s so multifaceted, but there’s the motherhood element I was incredibly excited to play, but it was more her journey. I mean, it’s so extensive this arc that she goes on throughout this movie, and I don’t think there’s one emotion that we didn’t explore or one kind of challenge that we didn’t take. Then it was also just the physical aspect of it that I was so excited to play. The fact that I’d never done any sort of thriller in my life. So, that was something that I’d never done before and I was just excited to be vulnerable and bring so much of my own stuff into it. I think that’s what I was the most excited about.

MF: Carlson, as a director what were the themes you wanted to explore and what did you want to say with this film?

Carlson Young: I wanted to explore so many things. I wanted to explore how the universe has this way of putting things in front of you and that we will keep colliding with patterns until we change the story. It had this contained survival thriller aspect of it on the surface, but I saw something much deeper. When I met Sophie as a creative partner, it just made sense to me. She had a bravery and a fearlessness and the way that she spoke about the material, I knew that it was a creative kindred spirit, and I could not have made this movie with anyone else. I can say that cosmically.

MF: Just to follow up, you said that there was something “much deeper” to the screenplay than just a survival thriller. What do you mean by that?

CY: That there’s a predator through line and it was important for me to take the power away from them, from that narrative, to tell the full story about what it means to be a mother, to accept that responsibility, to accept a child with someone who is a perpetrator of your deepest trauma. Oh, there was a lot and fighting your way through that, and absolutely facing that challenge and being brave and everything kind of working out in the end because of that bravery. You’re rewarded for that bravery in a sense. There’s a freedom that comes.

MF: Sophie, can you talk about where Lauren is personally, emotionally and mentally when we meet her at the beginning of the movie? What is her mindset when she arrives at the house?

ST: When she arrives there at this mansion, we’ve all been in that place where I think, or at least I have so many times where you’re so overwhelmed that you are paralyzed, and you genuinely don’t know what to do about it. I think she’s in that stage where she can’t think in a straight line. She can’t think logically. She can’t see the forest for the trees. It is an existential crisis, basically, her coming and arriving at this place. I think in earlier drafts of the scripts, there was mention of, maybe I just want to walk into the woods and let the woods swallow me up. I think there’s a full chance that she was going to that place to go and commit suicide. There’s a chance that she was going there to just get some rest away from the world. But I think she’s almost inside, totally catatonic. It’s not a good place to be in. But also, again, there’s a relief to be there and a relief to be away from all of this. So, it was balancing all those things at once. I think so many times she’s sitting outside watching the trees blow in the wind, and then suddenly, she gets this feeling of, “Oh my God, I’m so overwhelmed I don’t know what to do with my body.” So, you need to go. I think she’s just all over the place, basically.

MF: Carlson, what is like directing a dog?

CY: I love Georgie. Let’s talk about the dog. It’s such an element of light, I think, in the face of that existential crisis that she’s going through. There’s a friend just before she steps off the edge. Her name was Penga and she was an incredible performer. She was good and it was a joy to work with her. They say don’t work with kids and dogs. We did have both, and I can report a really good experience with that. She was dialed. She could hit her mark.

MF: Sophie, did you enjoy working with Penga and can you talk about how Georgie helps save Lauren in more than one way?

Sophie Turner: You’re so right. Georgie’s like, he grounds her. I think later, when eventually Georgie runs or gets kicked out, literally, then the grounding force becomes her baby, her unborn child. So, it’s nice to have that grounding theme throughout the show and that grounding thing, because otherwise, I don’t know if Lauren would’ve made it out of that room without having that.

MF: Finally, Sophie, your character is isolated through much of the movie, and it is a physically and mentally demanding role. Can you talk about the challenges of playing this character?

ST: I mean, to be honest, it wasn’t a challenge. It really fed into the performance. It was all so useful to basically shoot. I mean, I think there were maybe two or three scenes where, maybe more than that, but most of my scenes were on my own. So that isolation, you do feel it and the set was practical. We were in a very small room shooting that, and I’m really breaking the walls and I’m really scratching at the wallpaper and really being covered in these horrible cockroaches. So, because of the practicality of it all, it made it so much easier to step into that world. But again, it’s a challenge for me. I don’t really do that, or I haven’t really done that much physical stuff in my career before this. So, it was something totally new and different and I loved every minute of it.

    Preview:

    • Al Pacino and Jessica Chastain will lead the cast of ‘Lear, Rex’.
    • Bernard Rose adapted the play for the new movie and will direct.
    • Rachel Brosnahan, LaKeith Stanfield and Peter Dinklage are also all among a starry cast.

Al Pacino just can’t stay away from the Bard. The actor, who has appeared in several Shakespeare adaptations (and one or two movies inspired by his work), will once more tackle the legendary playwright’s work with a new interpretation of ‘King Lear’.

And he’ll be joined in what is called ‘Lear, Rex’ (“Rex” meaning “king”, “monarch” or “ruler” in Latin, language fans!) by occasional co-star Jessica Chastain and a host of famous faces.

From the sounds of it, writer/director Bernard Rose is sticking relatively close to the story as laid out by the play… Pacino will be an aging King who divides his land between his three daughters to prevent future conflict.

But he rejects the youngest daughter, Cordelia who loves him and places his trust in her malevolent sisters, who strip him of his power and condemn him to a wretched wasteland of horror and insanity. Tch… you kids today, with your lust for power and your overthrowing of the monarchy!

Alongside Pacino and Chastain (who plays Goneril, one of the older daughters who plot against their naive old dad), the already impressive cast for this one also includes Ariana DeBose as Cordelia (the youngest daughter), Rachel Brosnahan as Regan (Goneril’s scheme-happy sister), Peter Dinklage as the Fool, Danny Huston as Albany, Chris Messina as Cornwall, LaKeith Stanfield as Edmund, Ted Levine as Kent, Matthew Jacobs as Gloucester, Rhys Coiro as Oswald and Stephen Dorff as Poor Tom.

Barry Navidi is reuniting with Pacino to produce the new film, having worked on several movies with the star (including ‘Salomé’ and ‘Wilde Salomé’, which also starred Chastain.)

Here’s what Bernard Rose said about the movie in a statement to Deadline:

“It is enormously exciting to get the opportunity to work with this extraordinary cast that Al, Barry and Sharon [casting director Sharon Howard-Field] have put together to tackle this radical, but accessible adaptation of Shakespeare’s greatest play.”

And here’s what producer Navidi had to say:

“I am delighted to have the opportunity to collaborate with Bernard Rose. His artistic vision, combined with a talented ensemble cast of players led by Al Pacino, promises to take us on a remarkable and unforgettable cinematic experience. We are merging the worlds of Shakespeare and Hollywood. This marks the commencement of an exciting new chapter, one that Al has poured his heart and soul into. It is a privilege for me to join forces with my dear friend once more, and to contribute to his enduring legacy.”

When will ‘Lear Rex’ be in theaters?

With the distribution rights yet to be sold, there is no current release date for ‘Lear Rex’. The cameras are set to start rolling on August 12th and we can’t imagine such a star-studded film –– even a Shakespeare adaptation with its occasional cultural language barrier –– sitting in the marketplace for too long.

While last week’s episode ended with some criminals in the night, this episode seems to be going more towards the mystical side. Welcome to episode 4 of ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,’ “Is This Not Real Magic?” Which features our best friend Wong (Benedict Wong)!

The episode opens with a mansion outside of town and a hack magician performing. The crowd looks bored, as he calls a volunteer up on stage. Still looking over the unenthused crowd, Donny Blaze (Rhys Coiro) pulls out a “sling ring” and makes a portal.

We cut to Nepal and Wong. The portal opens above him and the volunteer drops in. She tells Wong that the portal dropped her into a pit with a talking goat and then she ended up there. He offers to send her home but not before she unceremoniously spoils ‘The Sopranos’ episode he was watching.

Cut to Jennifer (Tatiana Maslany) breaking the fourth wall again, mentioning that we look happy because we saw Wong. “It’s like giving the show twitter armor for a week,” she says. Her dad (Mark Linn-Baker) comes in and offers to boost up her security after her attack.

She says she’s a Hulk and will be okay. We move to her office where Jennifer is setting up her new dating profile. Nikki (Ginger Gonzaga) comes in to show her another interview she did, and they are stopped by Wong. He explains his “issues” with the magician from earlier.

Wong explains that Blaze was kicked out of the Mystical arts school and now he is using his magic for dangerous purposes. Jennifer asks if Blaze signed a contract, and Wong explains that they never got it in writing.

She mentions doing things by the book, and Wong asks, “The book of Ashanti?” No, the book of American laws! He gives her his card and leaves. At the bar, Jennifer closes the laptop on the cease and desist, and has some last minute Blonsky (Tim Roth) paperwork to do.

A man approaches them, offering to buy her a drink. Jennifer mentions they are doing work and he walks away. She says that type of guy is the reason she doesn’t date. Nikki asks to see her profile, immediately calling her out for her choices, starting to swipe on her matches.

She brings up dating as She-Hulk. Jennifer says no, and that it’s possible for her to get dates as her normal self. We jump to She-Hulk and Wong handing the cease and desist over to Blaze and his manager, Willows (Leon Lamar). Blaze argues with the sorcerer supreme about who’s the better magician and she puts a stop to it, being very obviously grossed out by him and leaving the office.

Next, Jennifer is on a date! However, her date (Ryan Powers) is not exactly blowing her away. He mentions that he was an entrepreneur and not subtly looks at other women. He asks what Jennifer does and she mentions she’s a lawyer.

Well, he’s not paying attention, as he’s on his dating profile and matching with other women. She explains her superhuman power to him and still, he’s not paying attention. Something feels off to her and she thinks he’s going to attack her, but both end up reaching for their keys.

In the courtroom, we see the case between Wong and Blaze. The judge is dubious at best. Wong summons the woman from the magician’s show, Madisynn (Patty Guggenheim) and She-Hulk uses her as the best witness they have.

Well, it’s not working at all. She’s absolutely the worst witness of all time! Blaze’s lawyer asks for the charges to be dismissed, and She-Hulk points out that the mystic arts is real magic, unlike what he does. “Oh my god even the lawyer is a magician,” Jen says.

Wong stands and gives a speech on how Blaze could easily destroy all life as they know it, and the judge explains that it will take a few weeks for her decision and Blaze is still able to do magic in the meantime. Wong offers to throw him into the mirror dimension, but She-Hulk tells him not to.

Jennifer asks Nikki to look at the case for her, and she gets no new matches on her dating app. Finally, out of desperation, she makes an account for She-Hulk. “I’m not proud of this,” she tells the audience. And within seconds, she’s getting matches.

She goes on a date with a few matches, but even then, none of them are great. They still treat her weirdly both as a woman and as a superhero. She asks, “Is there anything worse then dating in your thirties?”

(L-R): Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer “Jen” Walters/She-Hulk and Michael Curiel as Arthur in Marvel Studios’ ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,’ exclusively on Disney+. Photo courtesy of Marvel Studios. © 2022 Marvel.

Finally, she meets a man that just seems perfect, Arthur (Michael Curiel), who asks more about her and wants to split some food to go.

Meanwhile, Blaze is back on stage and his volunteer isn’t exactly going along with his act. He summons a real bird that lays an egg, but it hatches a baby demon monster. Throwing it into a portal, he accidentally summons more of them. He then teleports into Wong’s house and asks for his help stopping the demons.

Back at her home, Jennifer is absolutely loving this guy. But before anything could happen, Wong interrupts, asking why she isn’t answering her phone. “Oh, I know why,” says Wong, as she tells Arthur she’ll be right back.

He tells her about Blaze’s portal and She asks Wong what she’s supposed to be doing there. “Be a Hulk,” he tells her and she helps him send the demons back. Mentioning how of course she finally found a hot guy who cares about her and now she’s fighting demons instead of being with him.

After sending them back, she forces Blaze to except the cease and desist order. He agrees and Wong sends Jen back to have a fantastic night. She wakes up the next morning to Nikki informing her that Titania (Jameel Jamil) is on the news again, as the villainess has now been cleared of all charges.

Arthur walks in and is surprised she’s Jennifer and not She-Hulk. He doesn’t look happy, and awkwardly leaves. Jen answers the door to a man serving her a cease and desist, claiming that the Titania trademarked the name “She-Hulk.” “What a bummer way to end the episode, hopefully there’s a fun tag,” Jen tells the audience as the episode ends.

While there was a tag, I think the fun thing to discuss is how ‘She-Hulk’ has been using its humor to poke fun at the MCU.

Very obviously, Donny Blaze is a play on Johnny Blaze, the character known as Ghost Rider. The actual She-Hulk comics themselves were filled with Marvel references and as we mentioned last week, the fourth wall breaks. Honestly, it’s like the show is highlighting the characters Marvel has recently had returned to them, from Wolverine to now Ghost Rider, and as we know from the trailer, eventually Daredevil.

But with that fun and action filled episode concluded, we’ll see you back next week in hopes the action and humor continues to impress!
