Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Kiefer Sutherland about his work on ‘Tinsel Town’, his first reaction to the screenplay, making his first Christmas movie, his character and his relationship to his daughter, the UK’s holiday tradition of pantomime, and working with the cast and director Chris Foggin, as well as an update on the future of ‘24’ and what it was like acting opposite Al Pacino in the upcoming ‘Father Joe’.

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about your first reaction to the screenplay and is this the first Christmas movie you’ve ever made?

Kiefer Sutherland: It is the first Christmas movie that I’ve ever been in, and I was really moved by the script. Obviously, this is not something that I normally do, a comedy that is as broad as this. I thought it was incredibly funny. I think the British make these kinds of movies, kind of a warmhearted stories, they do them well. Chris Foggin is a fantastic director, but I loved the script. I found it very funny, and I just thought it was a nice story about someone who had lost their way as a human being, and the worst their life got, the better human being they became. I think that’s a kind of a wonderful fable. I found that the stuff between him and his daughter to be really moving as well. So, it had a lot of elements, whether it was the comedy and a touching drama at the same time, and it kind of came together. Piers Ashwood, who wrote the screenplay, I think just did a masterful job. So, I thought it was very funny right away and I was excited to be a part of it.

MF: Your character, Bradley Mack, is a difficult Hollywood actor. Did you draw influence from any difficult actors that you have worked with along the way?

KS: Well, I think first off, I had to take a very serious look at myself, right? I think over 43 years, I think there’s probably been moments where I have maybe been difficult. Certainly, in my younger years, I know that when you’re trying to find your way, you can make some mistakes and things like that. So, I drew upon those memories. Then, yes, I’ve seen some other actors be kind of demanding and maybe more demanding than their talent deserved, and Bradley Mack is kind of a perfect composite of that. What I really liked again about the screenplay is that he’s not a bad person. He’s just gone down a bad path, and that we all can find our way back. That’s really what the film is about. It’s just told in a very funny way.

MF: Bradley Mack is specifically an action star; did you feel like that gave you a chance to spoof your iconic ‘24’ persona in a way?

KS: I think a little bit, yeah, and it was fun. You know, I think it was fun. It’s very funny that people that kind of do an action movie here and there can sometimes start to think that they’re very skilled, either as a fighter or with weapons and things like that. The truth is you’re not. You’re taught just enough to fake it. So, I’ve always found that very funny. So, to be able to play that in a character for a film was a lot of fun.

MF: Can you talk about Bradley’s estranged relationship with his daughter and this experience makes him a better father?

KS: Well, again, he was confronted with a reality that he was, in fact, a bad father. Then, he is just forced to spend some time with his daughter because of these certain circumstances and he falls in love with her. My daughter was played by Matilda Firth, who is an extraordinary, gifted young actor. In the context of our movie, she was the adult in the relationship. That was a lot of fun and she guided her father back to being a better human being. I find that a very touching aspect of the film.

MF: How familiar were you with the UK’s holiday tradition of pantomime, called Panto? Did you do any research into the tradition?

KS: I did, absolutely. I certainly was not as familiar before the film I am now. I had never really seen a live pantomime, I’ve seen film versions here and there of a pantomime, but I’ve never been to one. So, when we got to Leeds, England, I was very excited because they had a pantomime on for that season, and unfortunately, it had closed two days before, so I wasn’t able to see it. But obviously, I got a great deal of help from everybody there, and it is a significant tradition in the UK and people take it very seriously. We talk about it in the context of the film, but it financially supports a lot of those theaters through the rest of the year. So, I think it’s very cool and it was fun to make a movie about it.

MF: Can you talk about working with Rebel Wilson, Alice Eve and legendary actor Sir Derek Jacobi, as well as the rest of the cast?

KS: Alice was fantastic. I only worked for her for a few days, but her timing is extraordinary, and she’s so incredibly funny as my divorced wife and James (Lance) did a great job as well, who played her new husband. Derek Jacobi is one of the great actors of all time, Sir Derek Jacobi, and to be able to have an opportunity to work with him was fantastic. Maria Friedman, Meera Syal, Danny Dyer, just all those fantastic actors, all just had such beautiful timing, and all kind of added personal moments to the movie. So, it was an absolute thrill to work with everybody.

MF: What was it like collaborating with director Chris Foggin on this film and what are you looking for from a director on set?

KS: For me, I’m looking for someone to be in charge. You know, the director is the one person who’s going to travel from the pre-production stage of a movie to the production stage and filming of the movie, the post-production stage where they’re editing and finalizing the music and all the special effects. So that’s the person that has the vision that’s going to carry its way through the entire film. I’m looking for someone to lead that, and that’s what the director is supposed to do. You know, having done this for quite some time, if you’re not working towards a shared vision, you’re going to end up on the cutting room floor. So, Chris is someone that I asked for guidance from, and at the end of the day, especially if you’re doing a comedy, you finish a scene and look over and if he’s laughing, we did something right, and if he’s not, we better figure this out. So, he was a fantastic director and I think just did a beautiful job with the film.

MF: Earlier this year, you talked about speaking to the ‘24’ creators about some ideas to bring back the show in some way and that there were steps being taken to move forward. Are there any updates that you can give us on that?

KS: You’d have to ask Howard Gordon how he was approached, but he did come up with what I thought was a really good idea. So, he wrote a piece, and I really enjoyed it. That’s kind of where we’re at and we’ll see if it gets made. But, you know, at this stage, I thought it was a really good idea, and that’s where we’re kind of at.

MF: Is Jack Bauer still locked up in a Russian prison?

KS: Yeah. So, he’s been there for a while, and he’s not happy about it.

MF: Finally, I know that you are shooting the upcoming movie ‘Father Joe’ right now. What has it been like working with the legendary Al Pacino on that project?

KS: Working with Al Pacino, you know, they always say, be careful about meeting your idols because they might let you down. That’s the opposite experience that I had with Al Pacino. Al Pacino was everything I’d hoped he’d be. He’s an extraordinarily powerful actor, but he’s a kind human being. So, I just really enjoyed it. I hope when I’m his age that I’m still working as well.

  • Rebel Wilson to Direct Musical Movie ‘The Deb’

Through her film career, Australian actor Rebel Wilson has dipped into the musical genre more than once, especially with the three ‘Pitch Perfect’ movies, where she’s played Fat Amy to plenty of plaudits.

So, for her first attempt at directing a movie, it’s perhaps not a shock that she’d pick an adaptation of a stage musical.

And that’s just what she has done, making a deal to direct, co-produce and appear (at least for a small role) in ‘The Deb’, which was a success on stage in Australia. Wilson was at the launch party on a yacht in Cannes this week, where backers Unigram were announcing the movie –– and the director –– to the world.

What’s the story of ‘The Deb’?

Originally premiering at Sydney’s Australian Theatre for Young People in 2022, ‘The Deb’ theater production was written by Hannah Reilly and includes original songs from singer-songwriter Meg Washington.

The musical follows lovable farm girl and high school outcast Taylah Simpkins (Natalie Abbott), who is certain the upcoming Debutante Ball, nicknamed “the Deb,” is her one chance to redefine herself.

When her cynical city cousin Maeve (Charlotte MacInnes) is exiled to Taylah’s drought-stricken town Dunburn, she thinks the ball is a “heteronormative shit-show” and immediately disrupts the status quo. In their search for the spotlight, Taylah and Maeve dig deep to find self-acceptance — and a date to the Deb.

Here’s what Wilson said about her reasons for directing a musical:

“Because I’ve been on set and have done so many musicals, you kind of pick up things like how to shoot a musical number and how to do the soundtrack, because you’re there and you’re part of it. I’ve always just been watching as the actress — watching, watching, watching — and then I produced a lot of things with musical numbers in them, like ‘Senior Year’ on Netflix, which had a lot of cheerleading routines. Everyone kept saying, ‘You should direct!’ I just started getting offered movies to direct from studios, so then I was like, ‘Oh my God, if I have to take a year out of my life and not be an actress and be a director, it has to be something that I am massively passionate about.”

Who will star in ‘The Deb’?

The movie is set to star a clutch of rising Australian stars including MacInnes and Abbott (reprising their roles) and Stevie Jean. Other actors in the film include Tara Morice, Jay Laga’aia, Shane Jacobson and Wilson.

Wilson compared the film to big cultural touchstones of Australian cinema including ‘Muriel’s Wedding’ and ‘The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’.

    The actor said,

“I really like seeing my culture on screen. Those films are very seminal to me, and I really wanted to create a movie that was like the modern version of those. Those movies have such charm, they’re so colorful, and they’re very funny. And they have real heart to them.”

‘The Deb’ doesn’t yet have a release date, but the cameras are set to roll in September.

  • ‘Cats’ Behind-the-Scenes Video Reveals Taylor Swift, Idris Elba Dancing

‘Cats’ Behind-the-Scenes Video Reveals Taylor Swift, Idris Elba Dancing

    Universal

    These “Cats” can dance!

Universal released a behind-the-scenes video for the highly anticipated adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical. The teaser features stars Jennifer Hudson, Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, Judi Dench, James Corden, Rebel Wilson, Ian McKellen, and Jason Derulo.

There’s no fur, but the video provides a glimpse at Swift and Elba practicing dance choreography for their duet as Bombalurina and Macavity. We also see the sets that were built to scale to actual cat size, so there are huge chairs and tables.

Director Tom Hooper will digitally add fur to the actors, an intriguing (possibly very weird) choice that we’ll hopefully see when the first trailer drops this Friday.

“Cats” was one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history. In 1983, the show won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and ran for an extraordinary 18 years. It has has continuously appeared on stage around the globe, having played to 81 million people in more than 50 countries and in 19 languages.

“Cats” the movie opens in theaters December 20.

  • The ‘Cats’ Movie Has Wrapped Production

The ‘Cats’ Movie Has Wrapped Production

    Taylor Swift/Instagram

It’s taken close to four decades to make its way to the big screen, but at long last, a “Cats” movie is finally due to hit theaters this year. And now, the long-gestating film has finished production.

Production company Working Title and the movie’s official Twitter page revealed the news on social media this week, tweeting out the jubilant news.

“Cats has wrapped,” Working Title’s tweet said. “Thank you to our amazing cast and crew. We made it!”

“It’s a wrap!,” the film’s page shared, alongside a photo gallery of images from the set. “See you in December.”

While there haven’t been any official images or teasers released from the flick yet, the star-studded ensemble certainly has us excited for this adaptation. The ridiculously stacked cast includes Jennifer Hudson (playing Grizabella, who sings the show’s most famous song, “Memory”), Taylor Swift (playing Bombalurina), Judi Dench (playing a gender-swapped Deuteronomy), Idris Elba (playing Macavity), James Corden (Bustopher Jones), Rebel Wilson (playing Jennyanydots), Ian McKellen (Gus the Theatre Cat), and Jason Derulo (Rum Tum Tugger).

“Cats,” based on the classic musical from Andrew Lloyd Webber and directed by Oscar winner Tom Hooper, is due in theaters on December 20.

  • ‘The Hustle’ Trailer Turns Anne Hathaway, Rebel Wilson Into Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

‘The Hustle’ Trailer Turns Anne Hathaway, Rebel Wilson Into Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

    Hustle
    MGM

Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson are conning “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” in the first trailer for “The Hustle.”

The actresses are starring in a remake of the 1988 comedy that featured Steve Martin and Michael Caine. They play con artists who team up to take down the dirty rotten men who have wronged them.

Hathaway takes over the Caine role of the high-class crook with wealthy targets, while Wilson steps into Martin’s shoes as the less-refined, low-rent scammer who wants to move on up to bigger cons.

“Men — boys — underestimate us. And that is what we use,” Hathaway says to her pupil.

It’s the first time the actresses have collaborated, but the trailer shows they seem to have good chemistry. But can they live up to Caine and Martin’s team-up?

The trailer comes out just as Wilson’s newest movie, “Isn’t It Romantic?” hits theaters this week. As for Hathaway, this is her film since the critically-savaged bomb “Serenity.”

“The Hustle” opens in theaters May 10.

  • Rebel Wilson Joins ‘Cats’ Movie

    Rebel Wilson Joins ‘Cats’ Movie

    Universal

The long-gestating big screen adaptation of classic musical “Cats” is continuing to round out its cast, adding another big name to its already-starry ensemble.

Deadline has the scoop that Rebel Wilson is set to co-star in the flick, playing the role of Jennyanydots, an old Gumbie cat who’s frequently mistaken for being lazy. Wilson has already demonstrated her singing and dancing chops on the big screen, starring in the “Pitch Perfect” series, making her addition to “Cats” pretty pitch purrfect (sorry).

The actress is just the latest famous face to sign on for the flick, joining a seriously stacked ensemble full of ridiculously talented folks. They include Oscar winners Jennifer Hudson (playing Grizabella, who belts the show’s most well-known tune, “Memory”) and Judi Dench (playing a gender-swapped Deuteronomy); one of the world’s biggest pop stars, Taylor Swift; perennial Bond candidate and the newly-anointed Sexiest Man Alive, Idris Elba (playing Macavity); late night host James Corden; and Gandalf/Magneto himself, Ian McKellen (playing Gus the Theatre Cat).

According to Deadline, rehearsals have already started at Leavesden Studios in England. “Cats” is a decidedly weird musical, but with this group on board, we’re definitely eager to see how Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper brings this film together.

“Cats” is due to pounce into theaters on December 20, 2019.

  • ‘Isn’t It Romantic?” Trailer Transports Rebel Wilson Into a Romantic Comedy

‘Isn’t It Romantic?” Trailer Transports Rebel Wilson Into a Romantic Comedy

    Isn't It Romantic
    Warner Bros.

Romantic comedies are all the rage (again) these days thanks to “Crazy Rich Asians” and Netflix hits like “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.” But the genre is a nightmare for Rebel Wilson in the trailer for “Isn’t It Romantic?”

The movie stars Wilson as a cynical New York City architect who thinks rom-coms are “lies set to terrible pop songs.” Then, after suffering a head injury, she wakes up to find her life has become a rom-com, complete with cliches like a huge apartment with all the shoes, a handsome suitor (Liam Hemsworth) falling at her feet, and flash mobs dancing in the streets.

The trailer definitely has a tongue-in-cheek vibe and indicates the movie will relish poking fun at itself and others of its ilk. Wilson’s dry humor seems to be a perfect fit for a satirical take on romantic comedies.

“Isn’t It Romantic?” opens in theaters February 14.

    This is aca-amazing … unless it’s a false trail.

Anna Kendrick was already talking about “Pitch Perfect 4” before “Pitch Perfect 3” even came out.

“Pitch Perfect 3” had meh reviews, but also made $185 million worldwide, which is more than “Pitch Perfect,” if not “Pitch Perfect 2.”

At any rate, fans are hopeful to see the Bellas again, and these posts have them hyped for “Pitch Perfect 4”:

  • Here’s the Insane Cast List for the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Live Concert

Disney has unveiled the star-studded lineup for its upcoming live concert staging of “Beauty and the Beast,” and the cast list should have fans eagerly accepting the invitation to “Be Our Guest.”

The two-night event is set for this spring, and like last year’s live version of “The Little Mermaid,” will take place at the Hollywood Bowl. And also like Disney’s previous effort, which featured an eclectic and big-named-filled ensemble, this new staging is a similarly starry affair.

    The cast includes:

    • Zooey Deschanel as Belle
    • Anthony Evans as Beast
    • Taye Diggs as Gaston
    • Rebel Wilson as LeFou
    • Kelsey Grammer as Lumiere
    • Jane Krakowski as Mrs. Potts

Damn, that’s a great lineup. We’re especially excited to see Diggs and Wilson team up as the dastardly Gaston and the dimwitted LeFou. And we also can’t wait to find out who’s playing some of the other parts, like Cogsworth, Maurice, and Chip.

According to concert director Richard Kraft, the event will be a mix of film, live music, singers, dancers, digital projections, effects, and special guest artists, and “pays homage to the original movie but also delivers something that can only be experienced live.”

Sounds like a winning combination to us. The event is scheduled for May 25 and May 26 in Hollywood. Tickets go on sale this Friday, March 16.

  • Anne Hathaway May Join Rebel Wilson in ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’ Remake ‘Nasty Women’

2016 Toronto International Film Festival - 'Colossal' PremiereRebel Wilson‘s upcoming remake of ’80s comedy “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” is getting a new name, and may have found its new costar: Anne Hathaway is reportedly in talks to join the feature.

According to Deadline, Hathaway is currently circling the project, which would team her with Wilson in the roles originally played by Steve Martin and Michael Caine in the 1988 flick. The gender-bending swap will also reportedly affect the film’s plot, with the duo — one described as high class, one as low class — now focused on scamming a tech prodigy out of his fortune, rather than swindling a wealthy heiress.

And Hathaway’s potential casting isn’t the only big news for the film: It’s also being retitled, from “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” to “Nasty Women.” The name is a riff on the phrase that was popularized during the 2016 election, when Donald Trump infamously referred to opponent Hillary Clinton as “a nasty woman” during one of the presidential debates. The term was later adopted by supporters of Clinton as a sort of badge of honor.

It’s unclear just when producers are planning to get started on “Nasty Women,” and both Hathaway and Wilson are currently tied up with other projects: Hathaway is shooting the star-studded spinoff “Ocean’s Eight,” while Wilson is in the midst of production on “Pitch Perfect 3.” Hopefully this flick will come together once those films are completed. Stay tuned.
