    Having spent the last few years –– at least up until May 2023 when the series final screened –– chronicling the lives of fictional (if not-so-loosely based on Rupert Murdoch’s dynasty) billionaires in ‘Succession,’ writer/producer Jesse Armstrong could be forgiven for wanting to make something about an entirely different subject. Sheep farmers in Bolivia, say. Or a toilet attendant in Arizona.

    But no, for his next trick, the satirical writer is throwing himself back into that maelstrom, albeit through a new angle –– and this time, he’ll direct what he wrote, making his shot-calling debut with a satirical new movie whose title is a mystery for now.

    Now, thanks to a tweet from streaming service HBO/Max –– which is teaming back up with Armstrong after being the home of ‘Succession’ for its four-season run, we now know that Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Ramy Youssef and Cory Michael Smith will star.

    The movie starts filming this month in Park City, Utah, which is most famously known as A) a place for wealthy types and B) the home for years of the Sundance Film Festival.

    What’s the story of ‘Succession’ creator Jesse Armstrong’s new movie?

    According to the barebones official synopsis, the new film –– it presumably has a title, but we’re not being told what it is yet –– follows a group of billionaire friends who get together against the backdrop of a rolling international crisis.

    We also know the characters that the cast are bringing to screens: Carell plays Randall, Schwartzman plays Hugo Van Yalk (aka “Souper”), Smith plays Venis and Youssef plays Jeff.

    Here’s what Armstrong said about the new project:

    “I’m intrigued to discover whether being around so many brilliant actors and directors on ‘Succession’ has in any way rubbed off on me. Let’s hope so. I’m grateful to Casey Bloys, Francesca Orsi and the whole HBO team for backing this film so wholeheartedly and helping me pull together a dream team of cast and crew.”

    Where else can I see the cast?

    Carell has been switching between TV and movies for years, since getting a big break on ‘The Daily Show’ and seeing his fortunes boosted further by ‘The Office.’

    He was most recently heard rather than seen in two movies last year: family fantasy ‘IF’ and franchise behemoth ‘Despicable Me 4.’

    On the small screen, he starred in short-lived Netflix sitcom ‘Space Force’ and effective Hulu thriller miniseries ‘The Patient.’ Carell has worked on Tina Fey’s new Netflix show, ‘The Four Seasons’ and is collaborating with ‘Ted Lasso’ co-creator Bill Lawrence on a series for HBO.

    Schwartzman was last seen in ‘Queer,’ stealing scenes from Daniel Craig, and in Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Megalopolis.’ Keeping it in the family he also had a tiny role in cousin Gia Coppola’s ‘The Last Showgirl.’

    He’ll be once more voicing ‘The Spot’ when Sony gets around to releasing ‘Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse’ and has a role in Michael Showalter’s new Christmas comedy ‘Oh. What. Fun.’

    Comedian/actor Youssef, the creator and star of his own show ‘Ramy’ on Hulu, was seen in 2023’s ‘Poor Things’ and lent his voice to Disney animated title ‘Wish.’ He also co-created the Netflix series ‘Mo’ and worked on upcoming Prime Video animated comedy series ‘#1 Happy Family USA.’

    Smith, who made an impression playing Chevy Chase in Jason Reitman’s ‘Saturday Night,’ also appeared in ‘May December’ and has a couple of movies on the way, ‘Sentimental Value’ and ‘Famous.’

    In addition to that, he’s part of the cast for Prime Video crime show ‘The Nightbeast.’

    When will Jesse Armstrong’s film be on screens?

    There’s the big wrinkle for this one: if you look at the script cover in the Max tweet about the cast, you’ll see the words “This Spring.”

    Which, yes, means that Armstrong is aiming to have the movie ready in the next couple of months.

    Presumably, he wants to get a satire of international chaos out before everyone in America is too poor to subscribe to Max at all. Either that, or spending years toiling at the relentless maw of TV means he learned how to work quickly.

  • Movie Review: ‘Poor Things’

    In theaters December 8th, ‘Poor Things’ is the latest slab of eccentricity from Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, who seems to attract applause and head-scratching in near equal measure.

    The filmmaker has brought us the likes of odd family drama ‘Dogtooth’, offbeat romantic drama ‘The Lobster’, horror mystery ‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’ and, most recently, his Oscar-winning historical comedy drama ‘The Favourite’, which started his collaboration with actor Emma Stone.

    She’s back for his latest, a skewed version of a ‘Frankenstein’-alike mad scientist story that goes to some very strange places but also has interesting things to say about female power and misogyny.

    Does ‘Poor Things’ Offer Any Riches?

    While the story of a woman reborn –– we won’t reveal exactly what is going on, as that is something audiences should discover if they haven’t been spoiled on the truth of the matter –– and its attendant learning-about-the-world tale is sure to turn some away, put off out by the uncanny visions on display.

    But even if you’re initially disquieted by the movie, our advice is to stick with it, as –– much like its main character –– ‘Poor Things’ has a lot more to say as it develops.

    ‘Poor Things’: Script and Direction

    ‘Poor Things’ sees Lanthimos working once again with ‘The Favourite’ scriptwriter Tony McNamara, who here adapts Alasdair Gray’s novel for the screen.

    And as with ‘The Favourite’, it’s a combination that works –– while the new movie features some very different characters and ideas than their previous collaboration, the subversive use of grotesque personalities and power plays is still effective in a more fantastical setting.

    McNamara weaves a compelling tale around Stone’s Bella but doesn’t let (most of) the other roles slide –– you can certainly see why actors, particularly those who like a challenge –– would flock to work with this writer/director team.

    Lanthimos is always someone who weaves worlds around his characters, either with stark production design or, in the case of ‘Poor Things’ a riot of Victoriana that gives way to something more akin to Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s more fantastical films as Bella’s journey continues. It’s definitely a fictional world –– no one will accuse ‘Poor Things’ of existing in reality –– but that all helps make it work.

    ‘Poor Things’: Performances

    There is no questioning Emma Stone’s commitment to the role of Bella Baxter, the young woman at the heart of the story. Stone has shown real willingness to stretch herself (partly in working with Lanthimos, where the result was a deserved Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for ‘The Favourite) and she throws herself into the part with gusto and vulnerability that gives way to steely determination.

    There isn’t too much room for nuance in playing Bella, but Stone digs some out, making you root for the character even though she can, at times early on, be tough to get a handle on her with her behavior. But she soon becomes someone you’re compelled to follow.

    Willem Dafoe also does a lot with a role that offers a little less to grasp onto than Bella. As scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter, he’s Bella’s father figure, but an imposing, distant type for much of the running time –– it’s clear he loves her and wants to care for her but isn’t entirely sure how.

    Mark Ruffalo, meanwhile, is having all manner of fun as the lascivious lawyer Duncan Wedderburn, and it’s infectious even as you loathe him for how he treats Bella when she grows past his influence.

    Around the central figures is a fine ensemble of actors given smaller, but still vital roles –– Kathryn Hunter shows up late on as a madam at a brothel who becomes something of a strangely wise mentor to Bella, letting her know how things really work in the world. This might be an offbeat reality, but some truths shine through, such as dynamics between men and women in ‘Poor Things’ faux-historical setting.

    There are one or two characters that don’t quite serve the actors as well –– Margaret Qualley, for example, is somewhat wasted in the thankless role of Felicity, who essentially serves as a cheap joke and could have been excised entirely without hurting the film.

    ‘Poor Things’ is well worth your time if you’re willing to relax into its particularly unusual vibe and engage with Bella Baxter’s story. It’s not just weird for weirdness’ sake, every element carefully curated to serve the plot.

    This is Yorgos Lanthimos at his most fantastical yet, but still maintaining the moral and ethical undercurrents that make his movies work beyond the strange surface trappings. It’ll certainly not be one to gather the family around at Christmas, but it’ll appeal to those who are after something distinctly different in their cinematic entertainment.

    Boasting a standout performance from Emma Stone, and Mark Ruffalo as you’ve probably never seen him before –– even the Hulk would wonder about Wedderburn.

    This is the story of Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn.

    ‘Wish,’ the latest entry from Walt Disney Studios features a fantasy musical adventure that captures the feeling of classic Disney animation and a fresh new story on the importance of staying true to yourself and the power of wishes. The movie will be released in theaters on November 22nd.

    Initial Thoughts

    Right off the bat, the audience will recognize the animation style inspired by Disney classics such as ‘Sleeping Beauty,’ ‘Pinocchio,’ and ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.’ The blending of 3D animation and 2D hand-drawn watercolor is something we haven’t seen before in Disney animation and gives the film a vintage look.

    The story explores the importance of wishes, how even a simple wish can inspire one’s path in life, and what happens when that is taken away. Complete with catchy songs by Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice that’ll get you tapping your toes and captivating performances from Ariana DeBose as Asha and Chris Pine as King Magnifico.

    ‘Wish’ is co-directed by Chris Buck (‘Frozen II’) and Fawn Veerasunthron (‘Raya and the Last Dragon’), with screenplay written by Jennifer Lee and Allison Moore. The movie will take you down the road of nostalgia with the opening of the film pans in on a storybook, just as movies such as ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarves,’ ‘Sleeping Beauty,’ and ‘Pinocchio’ did.

    After a quick exposition of King Magnifico’s past, we understand why he began studying magic to become a sorcerer and how the Kingdom of Rosas came to be – located in the Mediterranean Sea and a travel destination for all. It is also the place where anyone over the age of 18 can give their wish to King Magnifico for a chance to have it granted at a wishing ceremony.

    The story introduces 17-year-old Asha, who works as a tour guide in Rosas and is about to interview to be the King’s apprentice. During the interview, it is revealed that while King Magnifico keeps the townspeople’s wishes safe, he doesn’t intend to grant most wishes. When Ahsa suggests the King return the ungranted wishes, he becomes upset and explains that he only grants wishes he sees fit to keep Rosas safe. When Ahsa further argues that wishes can’t be harmful King Magnifico retaliates by telling her he would never grant her grandfather Sabino’s wish.

    Frustrated by this, Asha runs to the giant tree in the forest – the same one she and her father often visited during her childhood – and sings out her plead to the stars. Her wish was so passionate that it manifested a star from the sky into a ball of energy with magical powers. The night sky lights up with Star’s arrival, seen by all in the kingdom, including King Magnifico, who declares that any magic (other than what he conjures) is illegal and whoever uses magic is deemed a traitor.

    This propels the story into Asha rushing against time to find a way to free and return the wishes to the people of Rosas, with the help of Star, her goat sidekick Valentino, and her band of friends.

    The pacing of this movie is well-balanced, with the first act establishing the origins of Rosas, the relationship between Asha and her best friends, and King Magnifico’s past. The second act kicks into high gear as Asha works up a plan to free the wishes, all the while keeping Star hidden from King Magnifico. The songs are well-placed throughout and extremely catchy.

    Animation Style And Easter Eggs

    The overall look of ‘Wish’ preserves what we loved about the classics yet it retains the updated look wth 3D animation. It is clear to see that Buck and Veerasunthorn themselves are huge fans of Disney. Their love and appreciate of those films in is clearly shown in scenes that take places in the forest, as well as in the town of Rosas.

    Leaning into the nostalgia even more are the easter eggs seen throughout the film. Most are subtle and does not distract from the movie. Sharp eyed fans can spot nods to films like ‘Bambi,’ ‘Sleeping Beauty,’ ‘Cinderella,” ‘Peter Pan’ and more. Asha’s group of friends is a nod to the seven dwarves as some of their character design and characteristics hints at at specific traits of the dwarves. The easter eggs sprinkled throughout are not only visual. If you listen carefully, you’ll also hear it in the dialogue and music.

    The Songs of ‘Wish’

    There are seven brand new songs in ‘Wish,’ written by Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice. Michaels is the youngest songwriter to have worked on a Disney animated feature, and her style brings a contemporary sound to the mix. DeBose’s solo “This Wish” shows off her vocal range and ability to capture the raw emotion of Asha in her moment of desperation and hones in on the empowering message of believing in and fighting for your truth. This ballad has the potential to have the effect of ‘Frozen’s “Let It Go.”

    Another standout number is King Magnifico’s “This Is The Thanks I Get?!” where he descends into dark magic and villainy. As the citizens of Rosas begin to question why they can’t remember their wishes, the King’s charming facade starts to crack. This is an upbeat song with clever lyrics, as the King sings about being under-appreciated after everything he’s done for the kingdom, being constantly asked for more, and ultimately turning to the forbidden spell book. Chris Pine delivers on all fronts in this fun and entertaining number.

    The other songs in ‘Wish’ include “Welcome To Rosas,” “At All Costs,” “I’m A Star,” “Knowing What I Know Now,” and “This Wish (Reprise).”

    ‘Wish’ embraces all that is classic Disney animation, from the art style to the message of never stop believing in yourself (and your wishes). The idea of wishing upon a star may be a tale as old as time, but it is told in a refreshing way that’ll capture audiences young and old. The songs are incredibly catchy, and the adorable sidekicks Star and Valentino are guaranteed to steal your heart.

    Chris Pine’s King Magnifico makes a magnificent villain and is extremely very fun to watch, though they could have gone into greater detail about his backstory on why he turned to sorcery, as it would have made his falling into dark magic all the more worth while.
