    The 96th Academy Awards will be upon us in a couple of months, and the big film prize had actors Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid announce its nominees for the various categories Tuesday morning.

    As predicted, awards season favorites such as ‘Oppenheimer’, ‘Barbie’, ‘The Holdovers’ and ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ have all done well, though many were surprised when ‘Barbie’ director Greta Gerwig and lead actor Margot Robbie were not nominated.

    Christopher Nolan, who many are predicting will take home Best Director, saw ‘Oppenheimer’ dominate the nominations, as his story of the father of the atomic bomb earned 13 nods.

    ‘Poor Things’ was second with 11, while Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ earned 10 and ‘Barbie’ eight. Scorsese becomes the oldest and most nominated director, while his ‘Flower Moon’ actor Lily Gladstone is the first Native American acting nominee (star Leonardo DiCaprio, on the other hand, did not score a nomination).

    Following the results of the recent Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, the Oscar race is starting to shape up.

    It will officially begin on January 23rd when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announce the Oscar nominees, with the 96th Oscars Ceremony scheduled for March 10th.

    At this point, ‘Oppenheimer‘ seems to be the front runner in the Best Picture category, with Christopher Nolan and Robert Downey Jr. being locks for Best Director and Best Supporting Actor, respectively. Actress Da’Vine Joy Randolph also seems to be a lock for Best Supporting Actress for ‘The Holdovers.’

    In the Best Actor and Best Actress categories, it seems like a two person race now between Cillian Murphy (‘Oppenheimer’) and Paul Giamatti (‘The Holdovers’), and Lily Gladstone (‘Killers of the Flower Moon‘) and Emma Stone (‘Poor Things‘), respectively. But who else will be nominated?

    Moviefone is making its Oscar nomination predictions for the major categories including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress, ahead of the nominee announcements on January 23rd.

  • 2024 Critics Choice Awards Winners

    • The 29th Annual Critics Choice Awards were handed out Sunday evening.
    • ‘Oppenheimer’, ‘Barbie’ and ‘The Holdovers’ took home multiple trophies.
    • ‘Succession’, ‘Beef’ and ‘The Bear’ also did well.

    Awards season continued on Sunday evening with the trophies handed out by the Critics Choice Association at Santa Monica Airport’s Barker Hanger on Sunday night.

    There were, it must be admitted, few surprises –– ‘Oppenheimer’, ‘Barbie’ and ‘The Holdovers’ continued their cinematic award dominance, while on the small screen front, creative teams from ‘Succession’, ‘The Bear’ and ‘Beef’ found themselves on the stage making speeches.

    Emma Stone won for ‘Poor Things’, while Robert Downey Jr. lifted another award for his role in ‘Oppenheimer’ and gave a funny speech referencing negative reviews he’s been given through the years.

    It was somewhat disappointing to see certain categories reduced to mentions on cards before and after commercial breaks –– you can’t imagine the winners of the Screenplay and Score categories were thrilled to be consigned to a brief mention. Host Chelsea Handler (who included a dig at Golden Globes host Jo Koy in her funny opening monologue) even went rogue –– or at least as rogue as the show’s producers would allow –– and brought Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig to up to accept Best Comedy, which had been another of the card categories.

    • The show struggled to reach past glories.

    If you were looking for dramatic surprises at this year’s Golden Globe awards, which has somewhat distanced itself from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, an organization as much about damage control as it is journalism after a variety of scandals and controversies surrounding it, you would be disappointed. Except perhaps that ‘Barbie’ only took home two awards.

    It was definitely ‘Oppenheimer’s night, not only notching the first directing Golden Globe (following six nominations) for Christopher Nolan, Best Actor (drama) for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), Best Original Score and Best Picture (Drama).

    ‘The Holdovers’, ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ and ‘Barbie’ won two awards each, with the year’s biggest hit making do with an original song for Billie Eilish and Finneas’ “What was I Made For?” and the new, Cinematic and Box Office Achievement gong.

    The small screen awards were even less of a shock –– ‘Succession’ and ‘The Bear’ gobbled up the lion’s share of trophies, while Netflix’s ‘Beef’ had a good night, taking home Best Limited Series, Anthology Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television, with awards for stars Steven Yeun and Ali Wong. The latter is the first actress of Asian descent to win in her category (Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television).

    Awards season rumbles onwards as, following yesterday’s announcement of the Golden Globes nominations comes a group with a less controversial reputation, the Critics Choice Association.

    And once again, it’s ‘Barbie’s year, as Greta Gerwig’s film leads the contenders, having earned 18 nominations overall.

    In addition to Best Picture, Best Comedy, and Best Hair and Makeup nods, the film racked up several acting nominations including Best Actress for Margot Robbie, Best Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling and Best Supporting Actress for America Ferrera. Ariana Greenblatt is also up for Best Young Actor/Actress, and the cast garnered a Best Acting Ensemble nomination. Greta Gerwig earned a nod for Best Director and both Gerwig and Noah Baumbach are contenders for Best Original Screenplay.

    Elsewhere, the likes of ‘Poor Things’ and ‘Oppenheimer’, AKA ‘Barbie’s big awards seasons fellows, took 13 nominations each.

    And unlike the Globes, the working journalists of the Critics Choice spread the love even further with more movies seeing recognition –– or at least being in the running to secure it.

    While recent changes and corporate ownership of the organization have seen the Hollywood Foreign Press seemingly lean into the ‘shadowy’ part of ‘shadowy cabal’ (with even less transparency about how the Golden Globes are voted upon and questions about conflict of interest), their awards remain part of the season.

    After years of appearing on NBC in a rich deal, the Globes are on the move to CBS this year for considerably less cash.

    This season’s Globes nominations are somewhat understandably dominated by the big dogs of this year’s cinema, ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’, with the former tying the record for the second-highest number of nominations (for the record, it’s in line with 1972’s ‘Cabaret’).

    Other expected titles? Martin Scorsese’s prestige-y ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ and Alexander Payne’s ‘The Holdovers’, which seems destined to become a festive favorite.

    And in a stab at appealing to an even wider audience, the Globes also introduced a category celebrating big box office winners, meaning that Taylor Swift’s successful ‘Eras Tour‘ movie also made the cut this year.

    There were also the usual movies left off the list –– Michael Mann’s ‘Ferrari’, despite positive reviews, couldn’t find space in the Globes’ garage, while ‘The Color Purple’ didn’t make the musical/comedy cut (though some of its cast got nominations).

  • Movie Review: ‘Poor Things’

    In theaters December 8th, ‘Poor Things’ is the latest slab of eccentricity from Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, who seems to attract applause and head-scratching in near equal measure.

    The filmmaker has brought us the likes of odd family drama ‘Dogtooth’, offbeat romantic drama ‘The Lobster’, horror mystery ‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’ and, most recently, his Oscar-winning historical comedy drama ‘The Favourite’, which started his collaboration with actor Emma Stone.

    She’s back for his latest, a skewed version of a ‘Frankenstein’-alike mad scientist story that goes to some very strange places but also has interesting things to say about female power and misogyny.

    Does ‘Poor Things’ Offer Any Riches?

    While the story of a woman reborn –– we won’t reveal exactly what is going on, as that is something audiences should discover if they haven’t been spoiled on the truth of the matter –– and its attendant learning-about-the-world tale is sure to turn some away, put off out by the uncanny visions on display.

    But even if you’re initially disquieted by the movie, our advice is to stick with it, as –– much like its main character –– ‘Poor Things’ has a lot more to say as it develops.

    ‘Poor Things’: Script and Direction

    ‘Poor Things’ sees Lanthimos working once again with ‘The Favourite’ scriptwriter Tony McNamara, who here adapts Alasdair Gray’s novel for the screen.

    And as with ‘The Favourite’, it’s a combination that works –– while the new movie features some very different characters and ideas than their previous collaboration, the subversive use of grotesque personalities and power plays is still effective in a more fantastical setting.

    McNamara weaves a compelling tale around Stone’s Bella but doesn’t let (most of) the other roles slide –– you can certainly see why actors, particularly those who like a challenge –– would flock to work with this writer/director team.

    Lanthimos is always someone who weaves worlds around his characters, either with stark production design or, in the case of ‘Poor Things’ a riot of Victoriana that gives way to something more akin to Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s more fantastical films as Bella’s journey continues. It’s definitely a fictional world –– no one will accuse ‘Poor Things’ of existing in reality –– but that all helps make it work.

    There is no questioning Emma Stone’s commitment to the role of Bella Baxter, the young woman at the heart of the story. Stone has shown real willingness to stretch herself (partly in working with Lanthimos, where the result was a deserved Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for ‘The Favourite) and she throws herself into the part with gusto and vulnerability that gives way to steely determination.

    There isn’t too much room for nuance in playing Bella, but Stone digs some out, making you root for the character even though she can, at times early on, be tough to get a handle on her with her behavior. But she soon becomes someone you’re compelled to follow.

    Willem Dafoe also does a lot with a role that offers a little less to grasp onto than Bella. As scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter, he’s Bella’s father figure, but an imposing, distant type for much of the running time –– it’s clear he loves her and wants to care for her but isn’t entirely sure how.

    Mark Ruffalo, meanwhile, is having all manner of fun as the lascivious lawyer Duncan Wedderburn, and it’s infectious even as you loathe him for how he treats Bella when she grows past his influence.

    Around the central figures is a fine ensemble of actors given smaller, but still vital roles –– Kathryn Hunter shows up late on as a madam at a brothel who becomes something of a strangely wise mentor to Bella, letting her know how things really work in the world. This might be an offbeat reality, but some truths shine through, such as dynamics between men and women in ‘Poor Things’ faux-historical setting.

    There are one or two characters that don’t quite serve the actors as well –– Margaret Qualley, for example, is somewhat wasted in the thankless role of Felicity, who essentially serves as a cheap joke and could have been excised entirely without hurting the film.

    ‘Poor Things’ is well worth your time if you’re willing to relax into its particularly unusual vibe and engage with Bella Baxter’s story. It’s not just weird for weirdness’ sake, every element carefully curated to serve the plot.

    What’s the story of ‘Poor Things’?

    This is the story of Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn.

    Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.
