Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3,’ which is the third feature film in the franchise and the 32nd Marvel Cinematic Universe movie overall, and is once again written and directed by James Gunn (‘The Suicide Squad’), opens in theaters on May 5th.

What is the plot of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3?’

Following the events of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ the Guardians of the Galaxy are adjusting to life on Knowhere when Rocket’s (Bradley Cooper) past comes back to haunt him.

After an attack from Adam Warlock (Will Poulter) injures Rocket, the Guardians learn of his origins and confront his creator, the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji). Meanwhile, Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is still coming to terms with the “new” Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), who is now a Ravager. In order to save their friend, the Guardians must go on a dangerous mission that could lead to the team dissolving if they fail.

Moviefone: To begin with, James, what would you tell fans sitting down to watch this movie now to prepare them for the theater experience they are about to have?

James Gunn: I know so many of you have grown up with ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ So many of you have seen and supported us over the years. We’re so grateful to you for that and we really put our hearts and souls in this movie. We put in every ounce of everything we could, and I hope you guys enjoy it from the bottom of my heart.

MF: Chris, what would you say to the fans to get them ready for this movie?

Chris Pratt: First of all, I’d say thank you. Thank you. You sitting down in these seats right now are the reason the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ are the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ We’ve been able to full on live our dreams because of the support of the greatest fans in the world. Thank you so much. We really owe it all to you. James is extraordinary. He’s led me on this journey and he’s created what I think is the best of the three films. Buckle up and I hope you have some tissues nearby.

MF: James, can you talk about the decision to tell Rocket’s origin story in this movie and how his journey is the heart of the franchise?

JG: I’ve always thought of Rocket as sort of the heart of the ‘Guardian’s story. In a lot of ways he’s the least mature of the characters, he’s just been a very angry guy. I think that throughout the series we see characters do heroic things. Rocket does heroic things, but it’s only been for himself or for his friends. He doesn’t really have a sense of empathy for anyone beyond that, and this is a movie about how he became that way. We go back to where he was born, how he came about, how he was created by the High Evolutionary, and we learn everything about him and his tragic past.

MF: Finally, Chris, can you talk about your ‘Guardians’ experience, what playing Star-Lord, working on this franchise, and creating friendships with the cast and James has meant to you?

CP: It’s just now starting to hit me how grateful I am to have had a friend in James. It’s been amazing. He’s made my life. He’s changed my life. He’s changed the life of me and my family, my children, and probably their children. He took me by the hand. He found a working actor who had already at that point done way better than most people who come out to town. I wasn’t a waiter any longer, I was a series regular on a show. I was getting recognition. He brought me to a whole new level that ultimately changed the entire way the industry saw me. I no longer was auditioning. That was the last audition I ever had. So he changed my life.

What is the plot of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?’

    Initial Thoughts

While it’s not a perfect movie, James Gunn finishes his trilogy off with a heartfelt love letter to the franchise, in a character-driven movie that ties up loose ends and brings many arcs to a close. The actors are given room to explore their characters, and the villain is strong, but make no mistakes … this is Rocket’s movie!

    Story, Direction and Visual Effects

Full disclosure: I love the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ movies, in fact, they’re both in my top ten of MCU movies. But ‘Guardians 3’ is different than the previous films, its somber, character-driven, and darker, while still having James Gunn’s signature weirdness, humor, and music. The story ties up all the loose ends of the trilogy, including Quill and Gamora’s relationship, but really takes time to explore all the core characters, especially Rocket.

Obviously a lot of time is spent on Quill, Gamora, and Rocket, but Drax, Mantis, Nebula, Groot, and even Kraglin are all given their time to shine. The movie starts off slow and somber, and drags a bit in the middle, but has a very touching and action-packed third act. James Gunn clearly has an affection for this trilogy and these actors, and it shows in the film which is really a love letter to them.

For the most part, the visual effects work, and the colorful costumes and creatures are interesting and fun. But I do question the odd flesh-colored uniforms that the guards (including Nathan Fillion) wear at the High Evolutionary’s headquarters. They were just a little too weird and goofy for me, and distracted from the story.

    Rocket’s Storyline

Make no mistakes … this is Rocket’s movie! The film actually takes place in two timelines, flashing back throughout the movie to tell Rocket’s origin story. Over the course of the previous ‘Guardian’ movies and his appearances in ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame,’ Rocket’s become my favorite Marvel character and his story arc here is extremely touching. He’s the heart of the movie, and exploring his past while saying something about animal cruelty was both smart and affective. Some of the creatures we meet in his past are very creepy, but again, the message is not lost. While it’s only a voice role, Bradley Cooper’s “Gilbert Gottfried meets Bill the Butcher” performance has brought the character to life and his work here is touching, emotional, funny and makes Rocket a stronger character.

    Cast Performances

Chris Pratt is given a lot more emotional work to do with Quill this time around, and handles it well, especially his scenes with Gamora. Zoe Saldaña returns as the ‘Avengers: Endgame’ version of Gamora, allowing the actress to play a new character, in a sense. When the original Gamora died in ‘Infinity War,’ I was really sad to see her go because she had grown so much since the original film and I loved her relationship with Quill, but the new Gamora had really grown on me by the end of this film, thanks to Saldaña’s layered performance.

In a movie with so many characters, it’s easy for some to get lost in the shuffle and not get the screen time they deserve, but the movie balances the characters well and gives them all a moment to shine. Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, and even Sean Gunn, are all given time to explore their characters and grow through the course of the movie. As for Groot, he’s not a kid anymore and like Rocket, also has a great arc over the course of the trilogy, and surprisingly, Vin Diesel gets to do a little more in this movie than just say: “I Am Groot.”

Chukwudi Iwuji plays the High Evolutionary and is actually a pretty good Marvel villain. I found the performance menacing and effective, even though his ultimate evil plan is confusing at times. But his motivations and hubris made the character believable, and Iwuji gives a fun, if not over-the-top at times, performance.

Is Adam Warlock a Good Guy?

Yes and no. He’s an unwilling villain in the beginning, but has a change of heart over the course of the film, which I must say is paced well and is ultimately effective. But to be honest, I didn’t like the way the character was depicted, and didn’t care for Will Poulter’s performance, although it’s through no fault of his own. In the film, the character is the son of ‘Guardians Vol. 2’ baddie Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki), and is depicted as a brainless, bratty mama’s boy, and while the characterization gets a few laughs, it didn’t work for me knowing the character’s importance in the comics. Poulter physically transformed to play the role, and looks great, but for me, the character and performance just didn’t work.

Are There End-Credit Scenes in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?’

Yes. There are two in fact. The first sets up a possible future for the franchise, beyond the current lineup, and the second would set up a spinoff of sorts for one of the main characters. Both scenes are ‘Guardians’ centric and do not hint to any other upcoming MCU projects.

Will There Be a ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4?’

That’s hard to say at this time. James Gunn certainly is saying goodbye to the franchise, as he’ll be busy in the near future working on ‘Superman: Legacy’ and running DC Studios. As previously mentioned, the first end-credit scene does hint at a possible future installment, and the team teased for that is incredibly intriguing. As is the possibility of the spinoff teased in the other end-credit scene, with a character that is strong enough to carry their own film franchise, or at least a Disney+ series. Whether or not we will see any of the other Guardians in future Marvel projects, is anyone’s guess.

    Final Thoughts

In the end, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3’ is not a perfect film, and in some ways is not quite as fun as the previous two movies, but is a very loving sendoff to the current team and a dark and emotional look at these beloved characters.

If you’ve watched the moody trailer for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’, you’ll know that the third ‘Guardians’ outing, once again written and directed by James Gunn, promises to be an emotional capper to at least this incarnation of the team.

Though Gunn insists that it’s not some huge cull that will leave everyone permanently off the board (particularly as, thanks to their participation in the ‘Avengers’ movies, they’re important to the fabric of the MCU), it seems like we’ll be saying goodbye to more than one member (and comments by Dave Bautista about leaving Drax behind makes us suspect he could either die heroically or sail off somewhere else in the universe).

And one of the biggest issues that the Guardians––Bautista’s Drax, Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill, Zoe Saldana’s Gamora, Karen Gillan’s Nebula and Pom Klementieff’s Mantis, plus CG characters Rocket Racoon (brought to life by Sean Gunn in performance capture and voiced by Bradley Cooper) and Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel)––will face is Adam Warlock, played by British actor Will Poulter.

Created by gold-hued Sovereign leader Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki) after the Guardians double-crossed her in ‘Vol. 2’, Warlock promises that this prime example of the Sovereign race will destroy our morally changeable heroes. He’s a powerful warrior… But is he entirely a bad guy?

“It’s kind of more complicated than that,” Gunn tells Empire. “But he’s definitely not a good guy. What we’re seeing is the infant form of Warlock, newly out of the cocoon, and he does not understand life very well. He’s basically a baby.”

Will Poulter as Adam Warlock in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.'
Will Poulter as Adam Warlock in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.’ Photo courtesy of Empire Magazine.

After a long search for the right actor to bring him to life, Gunn settled on Poulter, known for films such as the ‘Maze Runner’ movies and, more recently, horror title ‘Midsommar’.

“People online were saying, ‘Oh, Tom Cruise should be Adam Warlock,’” says Gunn. “I wanted somebody who was youthful, and I wanted the person who had the dramatic chops and the comedic chops, not only for this movie but for what Marvel will use Adam Warlock for in the future. He could become this really important character.”

Yes, in true Marvel style, Warlock looks to be hanging around the MCU for a while yet, and he’ll certainly be handy for the future of the Multiverse Saga, which is the overarching title for Phases four, five and six.

For now, though, we’ll have to wait and see how Warlock pans out in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’, which will also feature Chukwudi Iwuji as The High Evolutionary, who promises to be even more of a problem for our heroes.

With Maria Bakalova, Nico Santos, Michael Rosenbaum, Daniela Melchior and the returning likes of Sylvester Stallone and Sean Gunn (in his other, live-action role as Kraglin), ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be in theaters on May 5th.

  • Tom Cruise Shows Off ‘Mission: Impossible’ Stunt Work

    pyvi1EQZ

Long gone are the days when we had to wait for home entertainment to see “Making Of” videos explaining how filmmakers pulled off amazing stunts or effects sequences.

These days, they’re out before the film itself arrives.

And if you’re Tom Cruise, you don’t have the patience to hold off until the year the movie lands, let alone the month or week. Hence a new look online at the extensive preparation behind one of the keynote stunts of ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’, which will see his character, daredevil agent Ethan Hunt, sailing over a cliff on a motorbike and launching himself into the sky for a BASE jump.

‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’ will be in theaters on July 14th, 2023.
‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’ will be in theaters on July 14th, 2023.

He might not have the patience to wait and show off the team behind the stunt, but Cruise certainly has it to make sure the sequence goes flawlessly––and with good reason, because no one wants to see him pancaked on the ground.

Least of all writer/director Christopher McQuarrie, who can be seen in the video visibly aging as Cruise pulls off his latest wild activity.

Which means we’re treated to an extensive exploration of what goes into a sequence such as this––in this case, much stunt bike training, test jumps and even microchip-linked drones which accurately record his distance, velocity, and angles so all involved can make sure it’s worked out properly.

And the ‘Mission: Impossible’ movies could certainly use the good publicity after a couple of years that have seen them hit with pandemic filming delays and all sorts of issues as the mammoth shoot continued (and continues).

(L to R) Holt McCallany, Henry Czerny, and Nick Offerman in Paramount’s ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two.’

We still don’t know exactly what the story will be this time (besides the obvious opportunities for Ethan Hunt to run/drive/jump off/into/out of things), besides hints that his past will be coming back to haunt him––particularly since old enemy Eugene Kittridge (Henry Czerny) is back from the original ‘M:I’ movie way back in 1996.

We can expect to see Simon Pegg (back as Benji) and Ving Rhames (Luther), plus more recent recruits including Rebecca Ferguson’s Isla Faust and Vanessa Kirby’s White Widow.

Completely new this time are Hayley Atwell’s Grace, plus Pom Klementieff, Indira Varma, Mark Gatiss, Rob Delaney, Charles Parnell, and Esai Morales, who was drafted in to replace Nicholas Hoult as one of the movie’s villains, after the latter had a schedule clash due to the movie’s many delays.

In related Cruise news, he also took time out from flying around to thank fans who showed up in droves and helped make ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ one of the biggest hits of the year.

But far from simply standing in front of a poster of the film (or in front of some pretty location where he’s still currently filming the two new ‘Mission’ movies), he chose to do it in his inimitable style––jumping out of a plane. Seems fitting, we suppose…

Premiering on Disney+ beginning November 25th and marking the conclusion of the MCU’s Phase Four is Marvel Studios’ second “Special Presentation” following ‘Werewolf by Night’ entitled ‘The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.’

Written and directed by James Gunn, the special bridges the gap between when we last saw the Guardians in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ and what they will be up to when we next see them in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

The special follows Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) as they set out to give Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) the best Christmas ever, after discovering that Yondu (Michael Rooker) ruined the holiday for him as a child. So, the two Guardians travel to Earth to kidnap Peter’s childhood hero, the ‘Footloose’ actor Kevin Bacon (playing himself), as the ultimate gift for Peter.

The result is a fun and heartwarming holiday special, and while the plot is somewhat predictable, it features great alternative Christmas music, a funny Kevin Bacon performance, and tees up ‘Guardians Vol. 3’ perfectly.

Pound for pound, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ is probably my favorite MCU movie, and the story was expanded well in ‘Guardians Vol. 2.’ But those two movies take place back to back, and with ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ taking place before ‘Guardians Vol. 3,’ and the untimely firing and rehiring of Gunn by Disney, I’ve been concerned that the third ‘Guardians’ movie would not be what the filmmaker originally conceived for the trilogy. Remember, had Gunn not been fired, ‘Guardians Vol. 3,’ would have been released towards the beginning of Phase Four rather than the end.

Also, with the original Gamora (Zoe Saldana) dead, and a younger version of her running around the universe, this is not the Guardians team we began with and the ‘Holiday Special’ does a great job of setting up where our characters will be when ‘Vol. 3’ begins.

Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Dave Bautista as Drax, and Director/Writer James Gunn behind the scenes of Marvel Studios' 'The Guardians of the Galaxy: Holiday Special.'

The Guardians now comprise of Star-Lord, Drax, Mantis, Nebula (Karen Gillan), Kraglin (Sean Gunn), Rocket (Voice of Bradley Cooper), new member Cosmo the Spacedog (Voiced for the first time by Maria Bakalova) and Groot (Voiced by Vin Diesel), who is now in his late teens but almost fully grown. We soon discover that they have inherited Nowhere from the Collector (Benicio del Toro) and are helping the locals rebuild their community. Other Marvel secrets revealed include the identity of Mantis’ father, and that Gamora is still missing at the time of the special.

Since this is a Disney+ special, and not a theatrical movie, obviously it did not have the same budget as other ‘Guardians’ films, but for the most part it never compromises the project. However, there were two scenes that could have used more effects work.

The movie begins with a flashback to Peter’s first Christmas with Yondu, and crude animation is used instead of live-action. One can assume this is because Michael Rooker is not in ‘Guardians Vol. 3,’ and was not available on set when they shot the special. The animation is rough, which matches Peter’s foggy memory, but distracted from the rest of the production. If animation was the only way to go with this sequence, using similar animation to the Disney+ series ‘What If…?’ would have fit the project better.

While Rocket and Groot are used sparingly, probably for budget reasons, Rocket looks good and is on par with his big screen appearances. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Groot, who at times looks more like the theme park character at Disneyland. In the special, Groot looks like someone in a rubber suit, rather than the CGI character we are used to.

But it’s the music, holiday themes, our beloved characters, and Gunn’s unique storytelling style that puts the “Special” in ‘The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.’ Gunn clearly understands the spirit of Christmas and knows what works in a project like this, with obvious influences from holiday specials of the past like 1964’s ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,’ 1966’s ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas!,’ and of course, 1978’s ‘Star Wars Holiday Special.’

The filmmaker also fills the special with non-traditional Christmas music like “Christmastime” by The Smashing Pumpkins or The Pogues’ classic song, “Fairytale of New York.” The underrated rock band the Old 97’s actually makes an appearance as an alien rock group on Nowhere learning about Christmas, and has a great performance at the end of the special with Kevin Bacon, who don’t forget is a musician himself.

Bacon is great playing a confused version of himself when Drax and Mantis abduct him, and he eventually befriends the whole group, becoming an honorary Guardian, which is fitting. The actor, who appeared in Gunn’s ‘Super,’ is a good sport spoofing his own persona and clearly understands what Gunn was aiming for. It’s also worth noting that Bacon’s real-life wife, actress Kyra Sedgwick makes a vocal cameo in the project.

As far as the core actors, Dave Bautista and Pom Klementieff have the largest roles, and have become a fantastic comedic team over the last few films. Drax and Mantis’ platonic friendship is one of the most engaging relationships in the franchise, and I’m intrigued to see where it goes in the next installment.

But the other Guardians have smaller roles. Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord does not have a lot to do but react to Mantis and Drax’s spontaneous Christmas, which he is emotionally touched by until he realizes that they kidnapped Kevin Bacon! Pratt’s basically just there to react, but has a touching scene with Mantis at the end, which I imagine will have large repercussions moving forward.

While Sean Gunn’s Kraglin is involved in the retelling of Peter’s first Christmas with Yondu, he’s basically in the background with Karen Gillan’s Nebula, who could have had a larger role. I also would have liked to see more interaction between Rocket and Groot, two fan-favorites, but we’ll have to wait for the next movie as Rocket mostly shares his scenes with Cosmo the Spacedog, who was originally introduced in the first film. But it was nice to get a tease of ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’s Maria Bakalova as the voice of Cosmo.

In the end, ‘The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’ may not be the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.5’ fans were hoping for, but it is a very funny and entertaining Christmas special that should offer enough character interaction, humor, and music to hold fans over until ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ hits theaters on May 5th, 2023.

‘The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’ receives 4 out of 5 stars.

  • Chris Pratt ‘Can’t Wait’ for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Filming Next Year

It’s no secret that Marvel is making a third “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie, scheduled for release in 2020. It’s set after the events of “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers 4.” But now that many fans have seen “Infinity War,” well, they have questions.

James Gunn has talked about his plans as writer and director of Vol. 3, saying last summer that “it will help to set up the next 10, 20 years of Marvel movies. It’s going to really expand the cosmic universe. We’re going to be setting up new characters.”

Chris Pratt (Peter Quill/Star-Lord) posted about Vol. 3 in a birthday note to Pom Klementieff (Mantis), saying he was excited to get back to work on the movie:

However, that led to some questions.

    SPOILER ALERT!

SPOILERS AHEAD FROM AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR.

    SERIOUSLY, SPOILERS!

So … is he basically confirming that Star-Lord doesn’t stay in the dust? We knew we weren’t done with the vaporized crew in this world or another, but are we all speaking openly about it?

“Infinity War” ended with Star-Lord as one of the 50 percent to be dust-busted by Thanos. Also, earlier in the film, he botched the plan to remove Thanos’ gauntlet because he was so upset at Gamora’s death.

Gamora was one of the deaths we figured would stick after “Infinity War.” She didn’t turn to dust in the end, she was sacrified so Thanos could get the Soul Stone. But maybe her story isn’t done either?

USA Today added this note about Vol. 3 to its May 2017 piece last year on Vol. 2:

“James Gunn has already started writing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to complete his trilogy, discussing the story with Pratt and having ‘some pretty intense conversations’ with Saldana about a significant role in the threequel. The only travels Gunn has on his docket in the near future, though, are relaxing ones to ‘get my head on straight after three years of waking up and going to sleep and thinking about a talking raccoon.’”

    His name is Rabbit, sir.

European Premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 - LondonZoe Saldana — who just got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, congrats! — told E! News in a non-spoilery “Infinity War” interview that it didn’t feel like a goodbye on the set when they were done filming because she knew they’d be back later this year for additional “Avengers 4” filming.

So was she being sneaky — unlike Mark Ruffalo and Tom Holland — to avoid the spoiler of Gamora’s death? Or will she indeed be back with the cast for additional filming for “Avengers 4” and maybe even “Guardians 3”? It’s possible Gamora could return as a vision or in a flashback. It’s also possible she didn’t quite die for the Soul Stone.

Saldana was candid about Gamora’s death in a spoilery talk with the L.A. Times, but wouldn’t confirm anything about her future:

Can you tell us anything about whether Gamora will be making an appearance in the “Infinity War” follow-up due next year?

I don’t know. [Laughs] For the sake of the devoted fans out there — we don’t want to rob them of an amazing experience. It’s all for them that we do what we do and we also protect what we do.

Was it sad to say goodbye to Marvel after all these years?

Yes and no. It was sad, of course, because I think that we all suffer from FOMO. There is a fear always of missing out, but I’m so happy that I got to play a part in the Marvel Universe, and I also got to play a character that — it has been brought to my attention — is seen as a great role model for young women. And also for young boys. I live for that, that’s why I do what I do. So I guess I’m going to cry all the way to “Avatar,” you know?

So she’s done? Not done? Maybe done? She could give lessons to Ruffalo and Holland — especially since she was the one to float the idea of “Infinity Gauntlet” as the “Avengers 4” title when we now know that’s not the case.

Whatever happens, “Avengers 4” is coming May 3, 2019, and “Guardians 3” will film next year for its release in 2020.

  • ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ Star Pom Klementieff on Fulfilling Her Dream of Becoming a Weird Alien Superhero

Sure, James Gunn‘s wildly entertaining (and just plain wild) “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” features all of your favorite cast members, returning for a second go around (Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, the list goes on). But there are also a bunch of instantly engaging new characters, among them Ego (Kurt Russell), the living planet father of Pratt’s Star-Lord (don’t ask) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Ego’s right-hand (or is it right-pincher?) woman.

Klementieff, a beautiful and otherworldly-looking French actress, gives Mantis a childlike sense of playfulness and hidden vulnerability. She also gets some of the movie’s very best lines. One of her powers is that she is empathic, meaning she can pick up on what people are feeling and sense certain psychic vibrations before they ever manifest themselves. That means her performance’s power lies in the moments when she’s saying some of Gunn’s pithy dialogue and when she’s being perfectly still, staring out from behind her giant, contact lens-covered eyes.

I recently got to sit down with a much less buggy Klementieff in Los Angeles to talk about achieving the look of Mantis, how scared she was to work with different directors on “Avengers: Infinity War,” and what it’s like being the newest Guardian of the frickin’ Galaxy (only we didn’t use “frickin’”).

Moviefone: The last time I saw you was on the set of the movie, more than a year ago. You had the green dots on your forehead. When you finally saw what Mantis looked like, what was your reaction?

Klementieff: Oh, it was incredible. On set, the guys who did the CGI, who are incredible by the way, they came to set and they showed me on the computer how it would look; all the evolution.

Did they show you your eyes?

Not my eyes, because my eyes were contact lenses.

    That was you?

Yeah, it’s my eyes! And with the make-up, it makes my eyes look bigger. James wanted Mantis to look bug-like. At some point, they talked about making my eyes bigger in the computer but I’m thankful that they didn’t.

So you had an idea of what you would look like?

Yes. And then, of course, and when the first trailer came out that was when I saw it completely finished. With the light it’s so cute and the detail — it’s so feathery and moving. It’s so cute!

Obviously, the cast had already made one movie together. Was it intimidating to join that group?

At first, yes. I didn’t know what to expect. You don’t know these people. So maybe there’s going to be some annoying people. But no! No no no! The first time I met them was at the table read and I was like, “Hi I’m the new one and I’m French.” I was kind of freaking out during the reading. But they were all so welcoming. Chris Pratt is the nicest person, I’m sure you know that. Dave is such a gentleman and so sweet and amazing. Zoe is amazing. And Karen Gillan is my friend now and she’s so cool. I really had an amazing time. Sean Gunn, also, who [stands in for] Rocket on set, and he’s an incredible actor, too.And you get to hang out with Kurt Russell, too.

Yes! Yes of course! He wasn’t at the table read, but I had such an incredible time with him. He’s so cool and down-to-Earth and funny, and I asked him so many questions about his past movies because, of course, because he is a legend. He would tell me stories and I’d say, “Oh really?” But he’s so normal. He’s the best.

Are you a fan of comic books? Did you know about this character before you signed on?

To be honest, I don’t really read comic books. But I loved the Marvel movies. It was my dream to one day be in a Marvel movie. It was my dream to have superpowers and, actually, to be an alien I thought would be so cool. When I got the part it was like, Is this really happening? We had the premiere yesterday and it was surreal. I’m just pinching myself. Is this real life?

What was the reaction to your character last night?

People loved her. A lot of people came up to me and said, “Can I get your picture? I loved your character.” So I was like, yay! This is so cool!

You have a lot of scenes with Dave Bautista, who plays Drax. Did he give you any pointers or talk you through that?

No. He’s not an actor. It’s just simple. I’m not like “let’s talk about the character,” either. You just listen to each other and you do the scene and you just have to try and have fun. You’re just sincere. It’s just about being sincere. That’s it.

I imagine that, between the make-up and the spaceships and everything, it’s easier to get into character, too.

Well, there isn’t that much make-up, actually. There’s beauty make-up. They did an amazing job, it’s not like it’s easy for the make-up artists. But there’s some prosthetics and they made it look like my skin with the beginning of the antennae. And with CGI they add the antennae. Of course they did amazing make-up with the big eyelashes but for me it wasn’t a huge amount of make-up. Of course when I looked at myself in the mirror, with the big contact lenses, it was like, “Okay, this is weird.” The contact lenses are the biggest contact lenses because they block out your whole eye. So you have a weird tunnel vision. There was actually a guy whose job it was to eye drops in my eyes every 15 minutes. He has to turn them and pop them to let your eyes breathe.

    Was it uncomfortable?

Yes, it was uncomfortable. It’s not nice. But, at the same time, the character is uncomfortable, too, so why not? It’s not like she feels so amazing in her own skin. No.

    You are a Guardian now.

Yeah! It’s crazy right? I’m a Guardian of the Galaxy! It’s a full-time job! And I’m so excited that James Gunn is going to write and direct the third movie. Someone else directing it? No. He’s such a genius and he has such a vision. Can you imagine someone else directing that? But you have someone else directing you in “Avengers: Infinity War.”

Yes, but I was so scared of that, too! James said, “You know you can call me whenever.” And I called him. But they [the Russo Brothers] are great, too. At first it was like, I don’t know if I can play this character with someone else. It went well!

In that your character will be interacting with others from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Did you really feel like a superhero?

It was incredible, to see all of these franchises together on set was really crazy.

Can you talk about initially landing the role?

Well, I did an audition with the casting director, who is amazing. Then I had a callback with her and James. And I had a screen test with Dave as Drax, in full make-up. But at the time, I had on different make-up, they tried some different stuff. I had a different skin color.

    What color?

It’s a Marvel secret. You want a scoop right? [Editor’s note: Bautista told me. She was orange.]

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” is out now (in every corner of the galaxy).

  • Dave Bautista Drove to Disneyland Just to See His Unfinished ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Ride

It’s hard to pinpoint a breakout star from the first “Guardians of the Galaxy,” because everybody was pretty much a breakout star. But there’s a strong argument that Dave Bautista, who played strongman Drax (initially hell-bent on revenge before accepting his more altruistic place as one of the universe’s primary defenders), made the biggest impression. At turns heartbreaking and hilarious, Bautista delivered his lines with deadpan delicacy, each one landing with a combination of humor and emotion. For such a big, burly guy, he was instantly lovable and a big part of why that combination of actors worked so well.

So you’ll be happy to hear that Drax takes an even bigger slice of the spotlight in writer-director James Gunn‘s sequel, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” opening this Friday. The sequel is bigger, weirder, funnier, and more emotional, and Drax takes on a larger role, acting as the comedic foil for newest Guardian Mantis (played with beautiful oddness by Pom Klementieff) and delving deeper into his own tragic backstory. Plus he’s even more hilarious this time around.

I got to chat with Bautista in Los Angeles, about what it was like coming back for round two, the hilarious moment that was cut from the movie, what it’s like being a part of a Disneyland ride, and how excited he is about working with Robert Downey, Jr. in “Avengers: Infinity War.”

Moviefone: How does it feel to be back for “Vol. 2?”

Dave Bautista: Well, we signed on well before the second one was even announced. It was so weird because before the first one was even released, they were already announcing the second one, because they had so much faith. And it’s the same thing here; they’re already announcing the third film before the second one opens.

Well, when did you know that you guys had really hit on something?

After opening weekend. I felt that it was really special. I’d seen it and I was obviously there filming it and I always thought it was great. But I get anxiety, too, so there’s always that bit of insecurity, because you really never know until people go see it.

I think people are going to be surprised by how funny Drax is in this movie, but also how emotional he is. Was it fun to play these different sides of the character?

Oh yeah, it’s great. I don’t find myself very funny at all. I’m a very dry person and soft spoken and a man of few words. That’s always a stretch for me. So the dramatic parts are actually one of my strengths, I think. I’ve always worn my heart on my sleeve and I’ve always been able to bring out emotional scenes. But the comedy thing, I’m very happy with, because I didn’t know they’d go that way.

    You’re really funny!

Well, thank you. It’s so funny because we improved a lot, so a lot of the outtakes they used for the trailers, they’re not even in the movie. And that shows you just how funny that stuff was and how much fun it was to shoot.

Was there anything you wanted to explore with the character that you were pushing for?

Yes, and it’s still the same thing, because there was stuff that was edited out of the first one because of the tone of the movie. And that was really exploring his family. I’d even love for audiences to have a visual of what his family looked like.

    Did you shoot that stuff?

No, but we shot a scene where he’s explaining all of his tattoos and what they meant. It was the story of his life. They couldn’t use the scene for one because it didn’t fit the pace of the film, it slowed things down a lot and was just too deep and depressing. That first movie had to be really fun to introduce these characters. So we filmed that and we’ve talked more and more about his family and who they would be and even physically what they would look like. We’ve decided Drax’s wife would be a rather large woman, which I think is brilliant. I think Drax would love being with a very large woman.

Well, with James Gunn coming back to do the third one …

You never know! Can you talk a little bit about working with Pom Klementieff, who plays Mantis?

Well Pom and I, we screen-tested together, when she was testing for Mantis. And right off the bat we had great chemistry. Her emotional range is ridiculous, I’m a little bit envious. She can bring it, man. She can bring the deadpan humor and when she wants to turn on her emotions, she had access to it, and it’s amazing. There’s also that quirkiness to her, with her high-pitched voice and her accent Asian looks. She’s just so perfect for Mantis. We had a lot of fun filming, because some of our takes I wish had made it into the film because they were just so ridiculously funny.

Is there one that you loved particularly?

There’s a part where I’m dry heaving because I’m looking at her. So I start dry heaving and then she is dry heaving and it was just hysterical. Everybody on set was dying. Because my dry heaving was really big and hers was little and cute and we’re just looking at each other dry heaving. It was so funny.

She said she was a different color when you guys did your screen test.

I think it was like an orange.

I though they’d done something digitally to her eyes.

Yeah, those were just big-ass contacts. I felt sorry for her. And I can relate. Those contacts are really uncomfortable and she had them in every day. But it’s so crazy that they just turned her into an insect. She does so many little things. I don’t know how many people pick up on this but she’s constantly rubbing her hands like a mantis.

Speaking of make-up, did you streamline your process at all?

Yeah. I didn’t but the team did. It was down from typically four hours to a bad day an hour-and-a-half. They usually knocked it out in an hour, an hour-and-ten. And it looks so much better.

And now you’re part of the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe with “Avengers: Infinity War.” How do you feel about that?

I feel great! I know I’m going to be employed for the next few years! But also I’ve been saying, even way back, that I was hoping there would be some kind of crossover. Because I was a fan first before I had a part in “Guardians.” I loved “The Avengers.” And I wanted that crossover to happen. I wanted to work with Robert Downey, Jr. Just because I was such a fan.

Did it live up to your expectations?

Oh yes, and then some. I met Robert Downey Jr., even before we were announced to go on “Avengers” and do the crossover, at the London premiere of the second “Avengers.” And he went out of his way to come over and was so nice and gracious about “Guardians of the Galaxy” and how much he loved it. I thought, Oh man, I love this guy.

Without giving anything away, is there a character from the MCU that you’re particularly excited about Drax interacting with?

No, I couldn’t say without giving anything away.

    Do little kids recognize you?

Nope. Believe it or not. Usually parents will recognize me and they’ll tell the kids, “Do you know who that is?” But no, I don’t get a lot of facial recognition … maybe if I was green and walked around shirtless all the time.

You’re about to be in a Disney ride, too. What can you say about that?

I’m super excited. Like, that’s the kind of stuff that excites me. Being a part of action figures and video games and amusement rides. That’s what really gets me excited. And I actually drove down there just to look at it. It’s not finished. But people were sending me pictures over social media. Some of them weren’t too happy about it. There were a few protestors. But I get it. I know they love their nostalgia and I do as well. But it’s great. I hope to be there the day they open it.

James Gunn shot the ride film, too, right?

Yeah, we shot all of that on set while were shooting the movie, the whole breakout and everything.I loved you in the James Bond movie, “Spectre.” We didn’t see you die. Is there any chance of you coming back?

There’s a great chance of me coming back. We’re holding our breath. We’re waiting to hear, for one, if Daniel Craig is coming back. Because if he’s not coming back, and this is just my idea, I think they’d completely reboot the franchise and start fresh. But if he did come back, I hope that they’d continue the Blofeld storyline, because they left it open-ended. I feel like Bond 25 is just Bond and Blofeld going at it.

Maybe you could be scarred up.

Or not. I feel like Hinx is indestructible, like The Terminator.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” is everywhere on Friday.

  • 17 Things We Learned on the Set of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’

Last year, Moviefone and a group of other reporters headed to Atlanta to visit the set of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” in an attempt to get as much information as we possibly could about the upcoming Marvel sequel.

If you know anything about Marvel, then you know they were pretty tight-lipped about a lot of things. What they did give us, however, has us so excited for the movie that we can barely contain ourselves. Is it May 5th yet?

Here are 17 things we learned on the set of Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.”

    1. Since the last movie, the Guardians have been attempting to be heroes.

“They are available for do-gooding, so to speak. It doesn’t always go well, but they try,” Marvel president Kevin Feige told us. “And when we first meet them at the beginning of the movie, they’re in a place called Sovereign, where they’ve been asked to deal with this giant beast that eats their power source and wreaks havoc on the planet.”

    2. There’s more action, which means more stunts.

“The stunts here are much more defined and they’ve been a lot more challenging, so I’ve been having fun,” Zoe Saldana, who plays Gamora, said. “Especially after popping twins like 17 months ago. The fact that I can get on wires and be lifted 30 feet up in the air at full speed, or just be dropped and land on heels, I love that they’re trusting me with this.”

    3. The Ravagers aren’t going anywhere.

“The Ravagers have a bigger part in this movie,” Feige revealed.

    4. Yondu’s soft spot for Quill gets him in trouble.

“There is an incident in the first act of this movie where [the Ravagers] have been hired to get Quill, but, yet again, Yondu is like: ‘We’re not gonna take down the Guardians of the Galaxy, we’d be crazy to do that.” But Taserface and some others are like ‘Bullsh*t, you’re just doing that because you’re soft on Quill,’ and it leads to a mutiny,” Feige said.

    5. Yondu gets a bigger fin!

“Yondu’s fin has a big thing to do with the Ravager’s more present role in this movie,” writer and director James Gunn told us.6. We learn why Quill could hold the Infinity Stone.

“There’s a question as to why Star-Lord was able to hold the Infinity Stone and not be completely and immediately destroyed, and we learn a little bit more about why that’s the case in this movie,” Gunn revealed.

    7. Be on the lookout for even more Easter eggs.

Gunn love his Easter eggs. “Our Easter egg obsession is insane,” he said. “In fact, we have so many obscure Easter eggs in this movie that it’s ridiculous.”

    8. It doesn’t exactly tie in with everything else going on in the MCU.

“The way this film ends will inform future things, but there’s nothing that nods directly towards it,” Feige revealed.

    9. Nebula is still having a rough life.

“We realize that the payment for the mission the Guardians have done on Sovereign is to get Nebula,” Feige said. “The Sovereign has captured her and are exchanging her for their services.”10. Nebula and Gamora get closer, but not that close.

“[Nebula’s] on a mission to find Gamora and rectify a few things there,” Karen Gillan, who plays Nebula, said. “And we’re going to find out a lot about their backstory and learn a lot about Thanos’s parenting skills, and maybe how dysfunctional the entire thing is. So we’re gonna chip away at those layers, which is really fun.”

“Through their relationship, you get a closer idea of what Thanos is really about,” Saldana added.

    11. Nebula hangs out with all the Guardians.

“Her main focus is Gamora, but she finds herself with all of them and I think she’s unimpressed by Rocket,” Gillan said. “She doesn’t know what he is as an animal. She doesn’t understand him.”

    12. Quill and Gamora explore their relationship.

“They’re becoming a really good team in the way that oil and vinegar are, where it’s good together, but they tend to stick to their own things,” Saldana told us. “I think Peter may have gotten a little more annoying, and Gamora is a little too rigid sometimes. So, through the dynamics that are happening around her, she learns to relax.”13. Mantis brings a whole new dynamic to the group.

“She’s an alien, and she’s spent her life with Kurt Russell‘s character, Ego. She was pretty lonely and then she meets the Guardians. She has empathic powers, so it’s connected with her feelings and emotions. She can change other people’s emotions,” Pom Klementieff, who portrays Mantis, explained.

    14. Drax and Mantis form an unlikely friendship.

“I think they’re both really awkward, but at the very core of Drax, he’s really just heartbroken. There’s an innocence about Drax, and I think Mantis has that as well, and I think that’s probably where their connection would be the most — just a very child-like innocence with both characters,” Dave Bautista, who plays Drax, revealed.15. Drax still doesn’t like Groot.

“I don’t think Drax and the tree are ever going to get along,” Bautista joked.

    16. The cast got to do a little more improvising.

“There’s a lot more freedom that James [Gunn] is giving us, and letting us improvise and kind of test how well we know we our characters,” Saldana revealed.

    17. You won’t find any sexualizing of Mantis.

“I didn’t want the character to be sexual, and, usually, they’re always like that. And I think that we’re creating something different,” Klementieff asserted.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” hits theaters May 5th.
