  • ‘Cocaine Bear’ Interview: Director Elizabeth Banks

    2uDP6B7O

Opening in theaters on February 24th is the new dark comedy ‘Cocaine Bear,’ which was directed by Elizabeth Banks (‘Pitch Perfect 2,’ ‘Charlie’s Angels’) and is loosely based on a true story.

What is ‘Cocaine Bear’ based on?

According to Wikipedia, the film is inspired by the real story of a 175-pound American black bear that died after ingesting a duffel bag full of cocaine in December 1985. The cocaine had been dropped out of an airplane piloted by Andrew C. Thornton II, a former narcotics officer and convicted drug smuggler, because his plane was carrying too heavy a load. Thornton then jumped out of the plane with a faulty parachute and died. The bear was found three months later in northern Georgia alongside 40 opened plastic containers of cocaine.

    What is ‘Cocaine Bear’ about?

In the film, after Thornton’s accident and the bear ingests the cocaine, he goes on a killing rampage in a small town in Georgia. The movie follows three different groups, Sari (Keri Russell), a single mother looking for her daughter (Brooklynn Prince) and her friend (Christian Convery) who are lost in the woods, Eddie (Alden Ehrenreich) and Daveed (O’Shea Jackson Jr.), two drug smugglers forced by Eddie’s father (Ray Liotta) to recover his missing cocaine, and Bob (Isiah Whitlock Jr.), the law enforcement officer hot on their trail.

    Who is in ‘Cocaine Bear?’

‘Cocaine Bear’ stars Keri Russell (‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’) as Sari, O’Shea Jackson Jr. (‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’) as Daveed, Alden Ehrenreich (‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’) as Eddie Dentwood, Ray Liotta (‘Goodfellas’) as Syd Dentwood, Isiah Whitlock Jr. (‘Da 5 Bloods’) as Bob, Christian Convery (‘The Tiger Rising’) as Henry, Brooklyn Prince (‘The Florida Project’) as Dee Dee, Jesse Tyler Ferguson (‘Ice Age: Collision Course’) as Peter, Margo Martindale (‘Downsizing’) as Ranger Liz, and Matthew Rhys (‘A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood’) as Andrew C Thornton II.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with actress and director Elizabeth Banks about her work on ‘Cocaine Bear,’ her initial reaction to the screenplay and the true story it is based on, balancing the movie’s tones of comedy and horror, and working with Weta FX to create the bear.

Moviefone: To begin with, what was your first reaction when you read a screenplay titled ‘Cocaine Bear’ and learned of the true story it is based on, and as a director, how did you balance the film’s different tones of comedy and horror?

Elizabeth Banks: My first thought when reading it was, ‘This can’t possibly be based on a true story.’ Then I went down the rabbit hole of investigating what had really happened. At that point I realized, in real life the bear had overdosed on the cocaine and died. I thought, ‘Oh, man, this movie is like a redemption story for that bear.’ This is a way to avenge the untimely death of that bear. Because I really felt for that bear, that bear was like collateral damage. It didn’t know what it was getting into. It doesn’t want to do drugs!

I loved that there was this crazy idea of a rampaging bear on a bender. That’s such a big, high concept, wild, crazy thing that, actually the way to balance the tone was really to ground everything else. So everything else has to be super grounded. The real story of a mom just trying to find her daughter. The real story of a guy grieving the loss of his wife, trying to be connected to his best friend again, trying to break away from his father. A man who is like, ‘I’ve got to find these drugs or we’re going to get killed.’

Those are very grounded, relatable, emotional storylines that set against the backdrop of the bear. It’s in that space in between where human beings do crazy things in reaction to the bear that I really felt that’s where the humor was, that’s where the wackiness could live, as long as the characters remained relatable to the audience.

MF: Finally, can you talk about working with Weta to create the design of the bear and developing it to look as real as possible?

EB: Absolutely. Well, I’ve said before I thought that this movie was super risky for me. What I meant by that was I had to give up control over the lead character of the film. I had no idea while we were making it, if we were going to pull off the bear. And if the bear didn’t work, then the movie didn’t work.

The partnership with Weta, they were great. From day one, they made me laugh. They got the tone. I think they saw it as an opportunity to do really intense, old school CGI. They’re so used to creating crazy, fantastical worlds in outer space and people flying around. This was like, ‘No, no, no. You’ve got to create something so realistic that people think a real bear was on set. How are we going to do that?’ This has to be a documentary about the bear.

And the level of detail that went into animating this bear, this incredible lead animator, Carmen Leggiero, who did so much homework on how bears act. We looked at so many reference videos, picking and choosing every detail of the bear: the size of its head, its nose, its ears, its eyes, the coloration of its fur, the textures, all of that. What does it look like wet? What does it look like with blood on it? What does it look like with guts on it? What does it look like when it’s eating? That was the big, big, big question mark hanging over the movie until the very end. And I am just pleased as punch with the results.

‘Cocaine Bear’ is produced by Universal Pictures, Brownstone Productions and Lord Miller Productions, and scheduled for release on February 24th.

  • James Gunn’s ‘Suicide Squad’ Adds ‘Pitch Perfect 2’ Star Flula Borg

    Universal

The squad keeps expanding: James Gunn‘s upcoming “Suicide Squad” flick has added another cast member.

Deadline has the scoop that Flula Borg is the latest star to join the ever-growing ensemble of the DC villains feature. Borg — a German actor, DJ, YouTube star, and comedian who is best known to U.S. audiences for his part as one the Bellas’ international a cappella rivals in “Pitch Perfect 2” — will reportedly be playing a love interest to one of the film’s characters, though Deadline says that not much else is known about the role at this time.

Borg’s comedic sensibilities mesh well with Gunn’s offbeat aesthetic, which Gunn showcased in his breakout film, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy.” DC is undoubtedly hoping that the filmmaker’s signature wit and quirk can breathe new life into “The Suicide Squad,” which faltered with fans and critics alike on its first attempt at a film in 2016.

With the cast so far, it looks like Gunn is doing just that. In addition to Borg, other newcomers to the franchise include Idris Elba (reportedly playing a new villain), “A Wrinkle in Time” star Storm Reid (playing Elba’s character’s daughter), “Ant-Man” star David Dastmalchian (playing Polka-Dot Man), Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” star Dave Bautista (rumored to be playing Peacemaker), newcomer Daniela Melchior (playing Ratcatcher), and John Cena. Returning stars from the original include  Margot RobbieJai CourtneyJoel Kinnaman, and Viola Davis.

“The Suicide Squad” is due to storm theaters on August 6, 2021.

These are the 11 quotes you can use for any occasion.

  • Elizabeth Banks Will Return to Direct ‘Pitch Perfect 3’

'A Bigger Splash' Premiere - 72nd Venice Film FestivalToday in aca-awesome news, Elizabeth Banks is reportedly set to return to direct “Pitch Perfect 3.”

According to Variety, Banks will follow-up her directorial debut — the massively popular “Pitch Perfect 2” — by helming the next installment in the collegiate a cappella series. It had previously been unclear if she would be back, Variety says, because Banks “was weighing other projects to direct and hadn’t committed to return.”

But it looks like everything is squared away now, and the actress-director will indeed be on board for the threequel. Original “Pitch Perfect” writer Kay Cannon will be back again for the next flick, too.

And that’s not all: All of the major leads have signed on to return as well, including Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, and Brittany Snow. With those big names on board, we expect more of the other Bellas to join the ensemble, too.

“Pitch Perfect 2” defied expectations when it earned a whopping $286 million at the international box office, more than doubling the 2012 original’s haul of $113 million. We can only imagine how successful another round will be.

“Pitch Perfect 3” is due in theaters on August 4, 2017.

  • The ‘Star Wars’ Series Wants a Female Director, Elizabeth Banks Volunteers

'Black Mass' Premiere - 72nd Venice Film FestivalCould Elizabeth Banks be making the leap from directing “Pitch Perfect 2” to directing a flick in the “Star Wars” series? It’s nowhere near a done deal, but Banks has made it known that she wants the job.

The actress-turned-director’s interest in the potential project came about thanks to some remarks from Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, who revealed in a recent interview with The Guardian that “Star Wars” is hoping to add more female filmmakers to its roster. Kennedy said that the slate of upcoming spinoffs and new trilogy installments are all directed by men — including Rian Johnson, Colin Trevorrow, Gareth Edwards, and Phil Lord and Chris Miller — and that she wanted to change that in the future.

“There’s nothing we’d like more than to find a female director for Star Wars,” Kennedy told The Guardian.

We completely agree with Kennedy, and apparently, lots of others did, too. The story trended on social media, and plenty of people threw out suggestions for their dream directors. One tweeter mentioned Banks as possible candidate, and the actress agreed with that suggestion.

So how likely is it that Banks gets the job? It’s impossible to say at this point, since there are already lots of “Star Wars” movies planned out (and their directing jobs already taken), and a female-led flick wouldn’t start production for some time. But Banks did make a ton of money for Universal thanks to the success of “Pitch Perfect 2,” and another director who raked in cash for that studio, “Jurassic World” helmer Trevorrow, has already headed over to the dark side Disney.

Maybe it’s not so far-fetched after all. (Johnson and Miller also chimed in with their support on Twitter.) We recommend Banks use the Force to sway Disney’s opinion.

  • Elizabeth Banks May Direct New ‘Charlie’s Angels’

banksHot off the success of “Pitch Perfect 2,” Elizabeth Banks is in talks to direct and produce a new “Charlie’s Angels” film, according to The Wrap.

The hit 1970s TV series that made stars of Farrah Fawcett, Cheryl Ladd and Kate Jackson reached the big screen in 2000 in a movie starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu. It was followed by a less-successful sequel “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” and a short-lived TV series with Minka Kelly.

There’s no word on what direction the reboot movie would take or who might play the crime-fighting lovelies who report to an unseen Charlie. Banks, one of the most sought-after directors in Hollywood, also has reportedly been in talks to direct an adaptation of the YA novel “Red Queen.”

  • Brittany Snow Will Return for ‘Pitch Perfect 3,’ Too

2015 CMT Music Awards - ArrivalsJoining her fellow leading ladies Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson, actress Brittany Snow is also set to return for “Pitch Perfect 3.”

That’s the word from Variety, which reports that Snow is currently closing a deal to reprise her role as Chloe, one of the original Barden Bellas. Kendrick and Wilson made their involvement in the threequel official back in June.

While it’s unclear what the focus of “Pitch Perfect 3” will be, since Kendrick, Wilson, and Snow were all set to graduate at the end of “Pitch Perfect 2,” that sequel’s success made the greenlighting of “PP3” a no-brainer for studio Universal. “PP2” made a whopping $69 million on its opening weekend, and has gone on to gross more than $281 million worldwide since its release earlier this year.

As of right now, original “Pitch Perfect” writer Kay Cannon is on board to pen the screenplay. No director has been announced yet, and Elizabeth Banks, who helmed the sequel, is not currently attached to return for the third flick.

“Pitch Perfect 3” is slated to hit theaters on July 21, 2017.

  • Anna Kendrick & Rebel Wilson Returning for ‘Pitch Perfect 3’

Premiere Of Universal Pictures And Gold Circle Films' "Pitch Perfect" - After PartyAfter the success of “Pitch Perfect 2,” a sequel was inevitable. But would its stars, Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson, be back for round three? Aca-absolutely.

Studio Universal announced this week that Kendrick and Wilson would indeed don their Barden Bellas uniforms once more for “Pitch Perfect 3,” which currently has a release date of July 21, 2017. Writer Kay Cannon, who also penned the first two flicks, is in talks to write the third.

It’s still unclear whether or not Elizabeth Banks, who made her feature directorial debut on “PP2,” will return to that role for the threequel, though she will produce the new flick. The status of costars Brittany Snow and Hailee Steinfeld is also unknown for now.

“Pitch Perfect 2” shocked the world when it snagged a staggering $69 million on its opening weekend earlier this year. It’s now far surpassed the original’s receipts, earning $259.7 million at the worldwide box office (compared to “Pitch Perfect”‘s $115.4 million). Could a third installment in the mega-popular franchise reach — or supersede — those heights? With Kendrick and Wilson onboard, it’s certainly a possibility.

    Stay tuned.

  • Yep, ‘Pitch Perfect 3’ Is Happening (Now Show These Ladies the Money)

It’s aca-awesome news, if not exactly surprising: “Pitch Perfect 3” is a go. “Pitch Perfect 2” was a huge success — even more than expected — and The Hollywood Reporter said Universal and Gold Circle are moving ahead with round 3.

Sources told THR that negotiations have already started with Kay Cannon, who wrote the first two movies. However, they said it’s not clear if Elizabeth Banks will return as director (as well as producer/actress/overall queen) or if Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson will be back as stars. They’re not suggesting the ladies won’t return, but they did note that the actresses could now ask for MAJOR $$$ since they have shown they are clearly worth it — and, apparently, there were no options in place for Anna and Rebel. So they are in a position to negotiate hard. (Now we’re picturing them in a meeting like that credit score commercial. What can YOU do for ME?)

THR said Anna and Rebel were paid about $2 million each for the second movie. That was a raise, they said, from low six figures for Anna and less than $100,000 for Rebel for the first movie. Well, what do you suggest they pitch for Pitch3 — $10 million each? Start the bidding…

Are you excited to hear that the “Pitch” will be perfect once again, however they resolve that with the plot, or do you wish they would just quit while they’re ahead?
