Launching on Netflix on August 28th is ‘The Thursday Murder Club’, which represents an adaptation of author Richard Osman’s popular murder mystery novel.

Directed by Chris Columbus (‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’), the movie stars Helen Mirren (‘The Queen’), Pierce Brosnan (‘The World is Not Enough’), Ben Kingsley (‘Sexy Beast’), Celia Imrie (‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’) and Naomi Ackie (‘Blink Twice’).

“Cozy Crime” is a genre appellation that some storytellers bristle at, invoking images of basic British TV detective series featuring quirkily named old folk digging into crimes in bucolic countryside landscapes. But when fully embraced and exploited for full entertainment value, it’s one that pays dividends.

And, on the face of it, ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ could feel like it slots right alongside those sorts of shows –– you could even imagine it airing as a series on Sunday nights on the BBC. Yet this is a big-budget, star-driven movie that has even more to offer.

    Script and Direction

Osman’s book launched a successful series of books and a healthy reading audience, so naturally there was pressure from the start to get the adaptation right. Fortunately, screenwriters Katy Brand (‘Good Luck to You, Leo Grande’) and Suzanne Heathcote (‘Killing Eve’) nail the tone and the basics while making any necessary changes as the story shifts mediums.

The mystery itself is solid and intriguing, and while you might be able to guess some of the elements, it doesn’t spoil the enjoyment.

In reality, it’s the characters you end up rooting for, and the screenplay features more than enough wittiness and charm to make them work on the page, even before considering the quality cast attached.

Chris Columbus certainly has experience bringing beloved British books to screens, and with ‘Thursday Murder Club’ he largely keeps things balanced and stays out of the way of the plot. Aside from some stylish flashbacks to another case, and some great tricks to keep you guessing on the crime front, the movie unfolds without fuss.

    Cast and Performances

It’s not every murder mystery that can boast the talents of Academy Award-winning actors, and this one really makes the most of its cast.

Helen Mirren is the perfect Elizabeth, a former MI6 operative who can’t shake her investigative training even if she is now living in a retirement home. Imperious, impatient and occasionally impolite (though usually only when she’s frustrated with others), Elizabeth also has a vulnerable streak, not least when dealing with her husband Stephen (a superb Jonathan Pryce), who is struggling with creeping dementia.

Pierce Brosnan, meanwhile, gets to show off his comedy chops along with his trademark gruff charisma as Ron, a trade union leader who is a key member of the club.

Also on the team is retired psychologist Ibrahim, played by Ben Kingsley, who applies his training to figuring out motives and schemes. It’s a welcome change of gear for the actor, who puts in an appealingly nervy, quiet performance.

Celia Imrie’s former nurse Joyce is the new recruit, brought aboard for her medical background and willingness to go along with Elizabeth and co’s ideas –– even when they conflict with local law enforcement.

Around the core cast, a solid group of British character actors adds flavor and spice to the story, including the likes of Ackie (who is a friendly police constable) and David Tennant (as a loathsome property developer whose latest deal threatens the sanctity of the Club’s Cooper’s Chase retirement home.

Others include Daniel Mays as DCI Chris Hudson, endlessly confounded by our heroes’ meddling and Tom Ellis, who is Ron’s son Jason, a famous fighter sidelined by injury who has found fame on TV.

‘The Thursday Murder Club’ is an effective, well-crafted example of the murder mystery genre, one that celebrates its source material while also making smart decisions about turning the story into a movie.

Chances are the film will have you hoping for a spin-off series, but with a batch of books in Osman’s novel series, we may have to settle for more movies.

But if any further movies can keep up the blend of crafty mystery and genuine emotion on display here, it’ll be a good day for Cozy Crime in general.

‘The Thursday Murder Club’ receives a score of 85 out of 100.

    • Pierce Brosnan has joked that he’d love to return to the Bond franchise.
    • The actor says he’d return if asked.
    • And his ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ co-star Helen Mirren has commented on the idea of a female Bond.

Since the news broke that A) Amazon MGM Studios took over creative control of the Bond franchise and B) ‘Dune’ director Denis Villeneuve was brought in to oversee development of the next big screen iteration of 007’s adventures, there has been speculation about who might play the lead.

Now, out doing press for new Netflix murder mystery movie ‘The Thursday Murder Club’, Pierce Brosnan –– who famously played Bond between 1995 and 2002 –– has weighed in on whether he’d come back. And it appears he would!

    s9q2deZnwTHZAtRmWmG6c5

Brosnan, of course, wasn’t being entirely serious with his comments, but you can read more about what he said below…

What did Pierce Brosnan say about a Bond movie return?

Talking with the Radio Times, Brosnan addressed if he thought there was still a place for him in the James Bond world:

“My wife Keely [Shaye Smith] and I have been listening to the drumbeat of expectation of who’s going to be the next James Bond. There are many great candidates out there, and I’m sure they’re going to make it a spectacle of delight. I don’t think anyone wants to see a craggy, 72-year-old Bond, but if Villeneuve had something up his sleeve I would look at it in a heartbeat. Why not? It’s great entertainment. It could be lots of laughs. Bald caps, prosthetics… who knows?”

And you know what? We’d be happy to see Brosnan taking on the role of M, the head of MI6 who is usually the one to send Bond out on his missions (and complain about his wayward tactics).

In the more recent Bond movies, the character has been played by Judi Dench and Ralph Fiennes.

Yet Brosnan wasn’t the only person weighing in on the future of Bond. His ’Thursday Murder Club’ co-star Helen Mirren also broached the issue.

What did Helen Mirren say about Bond?

According to Mirren –– who plays a former intelligence operative in ‘Thursday Murder Club’ –– and was talking to Saga magazine, she thinks that despite calls for a woman to finally play Bond, the character should stay as he is:

“I’m such a feminist, but James Bond has to be a guy. You can’t have a woman. It just doesn’t work. James Bond has to be James Bond, otherwise it becomes something else.”

When will the next Bond movie be on screens?

While it has Villeneuve in the director’s chair and Steven Knight writing the script, we’re a ways away from an announcement on the date. We don’t even yet know who will actually be playing Bond.

‘The Thursday Murder Club’, meanwhile, lands on Netflix on August 28th.

The 1968 original, directed by Norman Jewison, saw Steve McQueen as the titular bored millionaire, who concocts and executes a brilliant scheme to rob a bank without having to do any of the work himself.

When Vicki Anderson (Faye Dunaway), an investigator for the bank’s insurance company, takes an interest in Crown, the two begin a complicated cat-and-mouse game with a romantic undertone.

In an attempt to decipher Anderson’s agenda, Crown devises another robbery like his first, wondering if he can get away with the same crime twice.

The film saw a remake in 1999 with John McTiernan in the director’s chair, Pierce Brosnan as Crown and Rene Russo as Catherine Banning, the woman on his trail.

Patrick McCormick and Toberoff Productions’ Marc Toberoff will also serve as producers, with Alan Trustman–– who wrote the 1968 original ––– serving as executive producer.

And the cast that Jordan has surrounded himself with is impressive –– Kenneth Branagh, Lily Gladstone, Danai Gurira, Aiysha Hart and Pilou Asbæk are all aboard.

Jordan told Variety last year that he felt like he had plenty of work still to do:

    • The first look at Netflix’s crime novel adaptation ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ has landed.
    • Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren and Ben Kingsley lead the cast.
    • The movie hits Netflix on 28th August.

We’ve known for around a year now that Netflix and Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the popular ‘Thursday Murder Club’ series by TV host/producer-turned-author Richard Osman is on the way, ever since the film announced casting with Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie landing the lead roles.

    s9q2deZnwTHZAtRmWmG6c5

That’s quite a murderer’s row of casting –– pun entirely intended, since the book and resulting film will fall cleanly into the cozy murder mystery genre that the UK does so well –– and cements the latest big move for Osman, whose novel series has been a massive bestseller.

With Chris Columbus calling the shots, we now have the first look at the movie, and particularly the leads in the middle of their latest case. And if this one is a success, we can surely expect more.

Other books in the series include ‘The Man Who Died Twice,’ ‘The Bullet That Missed,’ and ‘The Last Devil to Die,’ as well as the newest installment ‘The Impossible Fortune,’ which is released later this year.

Here’s Osman’s statement on his inspiration for the stories –– spending time at his own mother’s retirement home:

“You just sit and chat with these people and they’ve lived these extraordinary lives. You hear these amazing stories and gossip and wisdom. You think, ‘These people are so overlooked.’ The idea that these people with their wisdom and their invisibility would be the perfect people to solve a crime is exactly where ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ comes from. Take these people who are underestimated but who have these incredible skills, put them together, and they can achieve anything.”

What’s the story of ‘The Thursday Murder Club’?

Osman’s book, the first in a series follows four irrepressible retirees –– Elizabeth (Mirren), Ron (Brosnan), Ibrahim (Kingsley) and Joyce (Imrie) –– who spend their time solving cold case murders for fun.

When an unexplained death occurs on their own doorstep, their casual sleuthing takes a thrilling turn as they find themselves with a real whodunit on their hands.

And this is no ordinary group of retirees –– they all bring a particular set of skills to the table. Mirren’s Elizabeth is a former spy, Kingsley’s Ibrahim worked as a psychiatrist, Brosnan’s Ron spend his days as a union activist and Imrie’s Joyce was a nurse.

Here’s what Columbus said about that main cast:

“This is the finest cast I’ve worked with since ‘Potter.’ They’re just so incredibly well-prepared, and it’s because they do everything. They do theater, they do television, they do film, and they’ve developed those sorts of muscles.”

Osman sold the rights to Spielberg’s Amblin company in 2020, shortly after the first book became a hit, and development quietly proceeded along.

So, who did the company chose to adapt a popular series of novels set in the UK it hopes will spawn a successful franchise (and has form working with Spielberg)? That would be Columbus, who helped kick off the gigantic ‘Harry Potter’ film series!

With Osman aboard as an executive producer, production happened last year and the first trailer should be on the way before we know it.

And though the concept might seem more niche than the adventures of a boy wizard, the casting will certainly help push the idea here and beyond.

While it originally looked like Columbus would pull double duty and also write the script, the adaptation instead come courtesy of actor and ‘Good Luck to You, Leo Grande’ writer Katy Brand and Suzanne Heathcote, whose credits include ‘Fear the Walking Dead,’ Apple TV+ series ‘The Crowded Room’ and a season of ‘Killing Eve.’

Who else is appearing in ‘The Thursday Murder Club’?

Beyond that starry main cast, we also have the likes of Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Tom Ellis, Jonathan Pryce, David Tennant, Paul Freeman, Geoff Bell, Richard E. Grant and Ingrid Oliver.

And we have a few character details for some of those…

Ackie is Donna De Freitas, a local police officer and good friend to the Club’s members.

Jonathan Pryce plays Stephen, husband to Mirren’s Elizabeth.

Tom Ellis will be as Jason Ritchie, Ron’s (Brosnan) son and a retired boxer.

Sarah Niles has the role of Patrice De Freitas, Donna’s mother.

Ingrid Oliver will be Joanna Meadowcroft, Joyce’s (Imrie) daughter.

When will ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ be on Netflix.

Along with the first look photos, Netflix has announced that the movie will head to its servers on August 28th.

‘MobLand’ receives 6.5 out of 10 stars.

Arriving on Paramount+ on March 30th with its first episode, ‘MobLand’ is a new limited series set within the spiky world of intergenerational gangster empires in London.

Birthed by prolific filmmaker (and no stranger to British screen criminals) Guy Ritchie alongside Ronan Bennett, the creator of Netflix hit ‘Top Boy’, it’s the latest in a long legacy of violent, talky meditations on family within the gangland dynamic, and bolstered by a starry cast.

‘MobLand’ has an odd history, since it began life as a spin-off of Showtime’s long-running family/crime drama ‘Ray Donovan’; you know, the one where Liev Schreiber played a “fixer” to celebrities and other powerful types whose one big failing was that he couldn’t mend his own dysfunctional family.

Yet somewhere along the line, for reasons that have yet to be revealed, what was going to be a look at the origins of the Donovan family focused on similar character types working in London has morphed into an original –– though that is stretching the term very broadly, as we’ll discuss –– story of conflicting crime families and the tough-nut type who sorts out issues for one of them.

With creator/writer Ronan Bennett here working alongside Jez Butterworth (better known for the likes of ‘Ford v Ferrari,’ and ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ but who tackled crime themes with 2015’s ‘Black Mass’), there is a lot about ‘MobLand’ that would lead to the description “Generic Gangster Drama #746”.

So much of what is on display here, the deep bones of the series, are tropes and ideas that have been explored many, many times before. You have, for example, the aging patriarch of the crime dynasty who is no longer sure who he can trust, even among his oldest friends. And his calculating wife, forever whispering in his ear about potential issues, proves to be one of the true powers in the family.

The less effective children are also used here, along with the primary focus of the show, the loyal fixer whose job it is the sort out the messes caused, mostly by those annoying younger clan members.

Between them, Bennett and Butterworth do manage to find some new ideas sprinkled between the established narrative, hewing away from some of the cliches (the fixer’s wife, for one, isn’t a naïve person who has no knowledge of her husband’s job) while leaning into others (the couple are still on the verge of divorce because of the pressures that come with it.)

Yet if you’ve watched particularly Bennett’s past work, it’s hard not to wonder why this is quite so generic at times.

Guy Ritchie, meanwhile, leads the directing team (which also includes Anthony Byrne –– who actually handles the lion’s share of the episodes –– Lawrence Gough and Daniel Syrkin) and tones down the visual zippiness from his other gangster TV series (Netflix’s ‘The Gentlemen’), here choosing a more somber palate and tone.

The series benefits from some impressive UK locations (especially the characters’ homes, which reinforce the idea that crime pays) and is shot well, dark and moody when needed, which is often, but rarely so murky that you can’t tell what is going on.

    Cast and Performances

Tom Hardy’s Harry De Souza is the focal point here –– he’s our eyes, ears and guide to this world. And the role takes full advantage of Hardy’s gruff strengths. He’s at his best when he’s using his stoic charm to threaten people –– usually more with his words than fists or weapons, but he’s not above that –– and get his way in the service of his bosses.

Harry also gives Hardy the chance to play the more subtle sides of the character, the family man who struggles to do right by his wife and daughter in anything other than providing them a great place to live and the money to do well.

As crime boss Conrad Hannigan, Pierce Brosnan sports an outrageous Irish accent (odd, since he was born in Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland) and generally gives the character a vulnerability under the tough gangster side of things.

Helen Mirren, meanwhile, utilizing her own often impenetrable stab at the accent (similar to how she does in ‘Yellowstone’ prequel series ‘1923’), is the power behind the throne but, so far, at least, mostly resigned to wafting in and out of rooms and offering the occasional snide bit of advice.

House of the Dragon’ veteran Paddy Considine is good as Kevin Hannigan, Conrad’s son and Harry’s old friend (they met in prison, which is how the latter came to work for the family). Unlike some of his siblings, he comes across as capable, though not always comfortable with the criminal life.

Among the supporting ensemble, Joanne Froggatt shines as Harry’s increasingly frustrated wife, Jan, while Lara Pulver is good as Bella Harrigan, Kevin’s wife and a woman with whom Harry also clearly shares a history.

The likes of Jasmine Jobson and Antonio González Guerrero, both veterans of Bennett’s ‘Top Boy,’ make an impact as Zosia and Kiko, Harry’s top aides.

It won’t win many points for originality, but ‘MobLand’ has enough going for it that it’s still a worthy entry to the gangster genre.

Solid work on both sides of the camera, and enough wit to stave off blandness are key to what makes it work.

    What’s the plot of ‘MobLand’?

Power is up for grabs as two warring crime families clash in a battle that threatens to topple empires. In the crossfire stands Harry Da Souza (Tom Hardy), a street-smart ‘fixer’ who knows too well where loyalties lie when opposing forces collide.

‘Black Bag’ receives 9 out of 10 stars.

Opening in theaters on March 14th, ‘Black Bag’ feels for all the world like Steven Soderbergh set himself and writer David Koepp the challenge of blending a thorny, John le Carré story with the effortlessly cool and stylish work the director was doing in his ‘Limey’ era.

The prolific filmmaker (who also serves as his own cinematographer and editor), has been on a real tear of late –– this is his second film in a matter of months (he had experimental ghost story ‘Presence’ out back in January –– and by any reasonable reckoning, it is by far the superior entry in his canon.

Soderbergh is most certainly on top form here, crafting a twisty, thoughtful and timely piece of drama about trust and deception, and the difficulty of maintaining a relationship when much of your life is built on lies –– either ferreting them out or maintaining them.

Having gathered one of the best casts in a while, he uses them in excellent ways, Koepp’s script providing a cluster of superb characters to get their teeth into, especially Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett.

It’s not a spy movie in the ‘Mission: Impossible‘ mold (the stunt budget here would probably pay for a day of craft service on a Tom Cruise film), but it’s intellectual and frisky, always keeping you on the back foot, unsure of who to believe.

Credit to David Koepp for here concocting a fascinating screenplay filled to the brim with interesting personalities and crackling drama.

We’re introduced to a group of operatives who work for Britain’s National Cyber Security Center, whose mission is to take down cyber threats to the UK and the wider world. But when the organization learns there is a mole working to get hold of their software worm known as Severus, which has the ability to integrate itself into nuclear facilities and wreak havoc, Fassbender’s George Woodhouse is tasked with sniffing out the traitor (or traitors).

Unlike, say, ‘Jason Bourne‘, George’s primary weapon here is his brain and his culinary skills (no, really) as he invites a group of colleagues to a dinner party where the secret ingredient in one dish is a healthy serving of truth serum. Along with his wife Kathryn, who might well be even smarter and more dangerous than George (and who he’s led to believe could be a mole herself), he tasks his guests with playing party games that lead to personal revelations.

But the real secret here that the fireworks are less grenades and bullets and more inner demons, as everyone has something they’re hiding and no-one is simply good or bad.

In Soderbergh’s hands, the screenplay comes to smooth, stylish life, scored with a jazzy David Holmes track that suits its near-timeless feel. Aside from some of the vehicles and the obvious tech angle, this is a story that could have been set in the 1960s without losing any of its power.

Yet the technology aspect gives it an extra frisson in this age of misinformation and shady online morals.

As we mentioned earlier, this is one of the most impressive casts assembled in a movie so far this year, and they bring the script to fizzy, emotional life.

Fassbender’s Woodhouse comes across as a combination of the intensity of his take on Magneto and the fastidiousness of his character in ‘The Killer.’ This is a committed patriot, a man who rarely lets emotion conflict with his mission. And Fassbender brings such cool effectiveness to the role, especially when a secret about his past comes to light (let’s just say his father was not the most faithful when it came to the sanctity of marriage).

Blanchett, for her part is feline cool, slinky and lethal in her way, and always keeping her intensions close to her chest. Kathryn is a clear match for her husband in skillset –– and her role is a highlight in a movie that features plenty of them.

Regé-Jean Page is Colonel James Stokes, a ramrod loyal agent who serves under Woodhouse and is dating Harris’ character. While the actor has tackled characters such as this before, Stokes is more complicated and a tinder box, ready to explode.

Naomie Harris, herself a veteran of the Bond movies (she played Moneypenny during the Craig era) is another cool customer, quirky shrink Dr. Zoe Vaughan who treats the rest of her colleagues but might be as messed up as they are. She’s utterly brilliant in the role, taking no crap from anyone but also coming across as complicated as those she oversees.

Tom Burke is all seething regret and resentment as Freddie Smalls, a formerly hotshot agent who has somewhat lost himself in addictions to various narcotics and pleasures. Burke, a chameleon of an actor, really digs into the role and is hugely entertaining.

Finally in the main cast, we have ‘Industry’ and ‘Back to Black’s Marisa Abela playing Clarissa Dubose, the youngest of the friend group, who is dating Freddie but can’t quite believe what she’s got herself into. But as with everyone else, there’s more to her than that.

But we would be remiss if we didn’t mention sterling support from Pierce Brosnan, himself a former James Bond, who has a small role but earns every moment of his screen time as Arthur Stieglitz, one of the group’s superior officers who feels himself superior in every way. It’s a great piece of casting, not just for the espionage movie tie-in.

It might not hold the sort of action antics we’re used to from Bond, Bourne or even Ethan Hunt, but if you’re a fan of the complex, knotty and well-drawn characters of le Carré, this will certainly make you smile(y).

Moviefone: To begin with, Cate, can you talk about your first reaction to David Koepp’s screenplay and the opportunity to explore this intriguing marriage dynamic between George and Catherine?

Cate Blanchett: Yes, well, I’d already agreed to do it before I read the script, because obviously when you know David Koepp is writing it and Steven Soderbergh is going to direct it, you know it’s going to be a great adventure. So, then when Steven said he wanted Michael (Fassbender) to play George, I went, “Oh, that’s perfect.” But I was surprised by just how elusive their relationship was, but also how the absolute bedrock of their relationship is that they would die for each other. I find that deeply romantic, and particularly after they’ve been together a long time. They’ve clearly decided not to have children and they’re devoted to their work. But the only thing they’re devoted to more is each other. So, I think that there was an intensely romantic thing at the heart of this film, which was not something you necessarily associate with a texture in the movies that Steven makes.

MF: Naomie, can you talk about your approach to playing Zoe, and since she is a therapist to a group of spies, can she truly trust anything they say, and how does she navigate that?

Naomie Harris: Well, I think she must be two steps ahead of them. I mean, she’s immensely intuitive, insightful and hugely intelligent, as well as being a little morally corrupt and slightly unorthodox in her methods. She’s basically created her own way of working in that environment where morality rules don’t matter. All that matters are results. Are the spies mentally sound and are they staying on mission? That’s it for her.

MF: Tom, can you talk about how Freddie’s personal life is affecting his professional life?

TB: Yeah, I mean, it’s alluded to in the dialogue and in everything that happens, I suppose, as well. You do feel like amid what must be an incredibly careful and focused skill set for his career, that there’s a completely improvised element of his own life that involves drinking, drugging and an awful lot else. That’s very interesting to play because it seems like a paradox, but also it makes sense that somebody like that might be drawn to a high-risk career. It’s to kind of accommodate that need or that drive.

MF: Tom, as an actor, what is it like being on a Steven Soderbergh set? What was he like to work with as a director?

TB: He has an amazing understanding of how to optimize what his actors are bringing to each scene and it’s not least to do with energy and time. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen that handled quite so caringly or felt that handled quite so caringly.

MF: Cate, you’ve worked with Steven Soderbergh before, how was this experience similar or different than the last time you worked together?

CB: Well, we’d worked together years ago on a film called ‘The Good German’, which I think about three and a half people saw. But which Steven has said is one movie he was so completely happy with, and it was such an interesting experience for me. So, it was just a deepening of that experience. He’s so economical and so relaxed while he gives time to people to do what they do. So, he’s very respectful to every single department and grateful to every single department who are working towards making the movie great. What he doesn’t have any truck for is people who are lazy and unprepared. So, he makes you really want to bring your best for him. You want to be ready. If you say to him, “I need to go again”, he’ll go, “Don’t worry about it, I’m only going to use those four frames,” because he’s editing in his head. I mean, he’s like a machine with the biggest heart. You know, he really cares about the actors that he works with and every single member of the crew. So, before I worked with him, I don’t think I could even imagine that those two parts of a cinema artist could coexist as beautifully as they do in him.

MF: Finally, Naomie, what surprised you about working with Steven Soderbergh?

NH: I think one of the shocking things for me about working with Steven was just how much freedom he gives to actors. He truly casts well and then he completely trusts you to make of the characters what you will. I’ve never had that much liberty. So, in the beginning I was really intimidated by it. But then it’s such a liberating and an empowering experience where you’re just like, this person believes in me so much that I can make any choice that I want. So, I really learned a lot from working with him.

Opening in theaters and available on VOD beginning November 8th is the new drama ‘The Last Rifleman’, which is based on a true story, and was directed by Terry Loane (‘Mickybo and Me’). The movie stars acclaimed actor Pierce Brosnan (‘GoldenEye’ and ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’), as well as Jürgen Prochnow (‘Beverly Hills Cop II’) and the late John Amos (‘Coming to America’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Pierce Brosnan about his work on ‘The Last Rifleman’, his first reaction to the screenplay, the journey his character goes on and the people he meets along the way, working with the late John Amos, the guilt his character has over losing his wife and his best friend, playing a character in their nineties, and what Brosnan still wants to accomplish in his life before his time runs out.

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about your first reaction to the screenplay and why you wanted to be a part of this project?

Pierce Brosnan: I wanted to be a part of it for the memory of the men, the young men who went to war all those years back in time. I wanted to work with Terry Loane, who I’ve tried to work with before. I wanted to go back to Ireland to make this movie and be part of such a production and such a story, to capture something that had a poignancy and a memory of pain and suffering and a lament for the loss of life, loss to the barbarity of war and the barbarity of war that haunts a man and still lives with us today. I thought it was beautifully rendered and I thought it was even more poignant that it came from the essence of a story that had a truth to it.

MF: Can you talk about the journey that Artie goes on and the incredibly kind strangers that he meets along the way that help him on his journey?

PB: Well, I think the essence of his being is kindness, and I thought it was a wonderful road movie, and I was surrounded by such great performers. To go back to my homeland, to go back to Ireland, to discover a part of my homeland, the north of Ireland, which I fell in love with, the people, the landscape, they’ve had a deep poignancy for me.

MF: You have a fantastic scene with the late actor John Amos. What was it like working with him and having him as a scene partner?

PB: Oh, John, I have the greatest love and fondness of memory for him. He is a man that I had seen over the years of being an actor myself and living in Los Angeles and coming to America in early 1982 and finding a life and a career, and discovering all these wonderful actors who have great stories of character. To be an entertainer, to be an actor, to be in the public eye, to be on the stage for so many years like John was, and then to sit in his company, along with his son, it had, again, a very meaningful memory for me. We got on famously. I also had my mother on the shoot with me and my wife, Keely. So, it was a joy to have my family with me and to share this charming road movie of a story. So, John was great. Lovely voice, lovely man, kindhearted, and a joy to be with.

MF: Can you talk about the love and guilt that Artie carries for both his late wife Maggie, and his friend Charlie, who was lost in WWII?

PB: Yes. Well, we do as humans carry so many regrets and misfortunes that some of us never heal from. Maggie suffers from dementia, which is such a cruel plight on our humanity. They had such a love, and the torment and the pain and the sacrifice of war, and that moment of hesitation and the battle in the fury of war where you freeze, and you must suffer with the consequences of your fear and not moving forward and perhaps being cowardly and not courageous in that torrential tumult of war, that he loses his friend. That’s the essence of the story. Again, using such a word, that I thought was well rendered. Terry Loane, I go back to, because he made one of my favorite films, and my wife Keely, he made a movie called ‘Mickybo and Me’, which is a charming film if no one has ever seen it. We both, Keely, my wife and I fell in love with that film. Then lo and behold, Terry came to me with another project, which never found wings, and time and years ticked on. Then he came to me with this jewel of a story about Artie, ‘The Last Rifleman’. So I said, “Let’s go. Let’s make the movie.”

MF: What are the challenges of playing an older character and can you also talk about the make-up process that you went through for this film?

PB: Well, at this age, I mean, I’m now 70 years of age, so I’m in that wonderful act of the third. But to play this man, I wished and desired to make some transformation, and I found a company called Millennium FX, and they came out to visit with me in California, and we did casts, and we looked at various presentations of myself, of possibilities of what I might look like when I’m 93, and I thought that was necessary for me to try and portray this character. So, it was a ritual every day, and I knew it was going to be so, and that is the delight of being an actor now at this age and having done what I’ve done as an actor and lived in the world of some representation of myself as a man and as an actor, to try and get away from that, to try and transform. So, it was quite demanding, but it was also a wonderful meditation every morning, with these wonderful artists. It would take about two hours and it was a meditation. I was up at 5:30am, and I would sit in the chair, and these wonderful artists just transformed me. I would open my eyes and after a period there’d be the character. Also, as a painter, as an artist, I did studies, so I have a whole series of self-portraits of myself as this character. So, I came away not only with portraying the man, but also with a piece of artwork, which has its own story.

MF: Finally, Artie goes on this journey because he feels that he has one more thing he must do before he dies. Is there anything that you feel like you need to do before your time on this Earth is up?

PB: Oh, dear, I suppose. But there are so many. You know, one last performance that will seal the deal, one great piece of poetry, or a memoir, or a painting. Yeah, there’s so many. It all comes from an artistic life, but I don’t really think in those terms of last wishes or last moments. I’m just hope that it comes gently.

    Preview:

    • Lily James and Pierce Brosnan is starring in a new version of ‘Cliffhanger.’
    • Sylvester Stallone is no longer aboard.
    • Jaume Collet-Serra is taking over directing.

Back in May of last year, it appeared that the long-gestating reboot of ‘Cliffhanger’ was ready to be born instead as a sequel to the 1993 original, with star Sylvester Stallone pulling on his climbing gear for a return as Gabe Walker.

Yet as these things always seem to do, the project has since evolved back into more of a reboot, with Stallone dropping out (hopefully not down a giant cliff) and the storyline switching to characters played by Lily James and Pierce Brosnan.

And there have also been some changes behind the camera, too.

What’s the story of this new ‘Cliffhanger’?

The first change beyond the stars for the movie is in the script, which is based on a story by Ana Lily Amirpour (who was involved with the film back in another incarnation in 2019). Variety has heard it described as a father-daughter take on ‘Die Hard.’

Brosnan will play seasoned mountaineer Ray Cooper, who operates a luxury chalet in the Dolomites with daughter Sydney.

During a weekend trip with a billionaire’s son, they are targeted by a gang of kidnappers. Ray’s other daughter Naomi (James), still haunted by a past climbing accident, witnesses the attack and escapes. To save her family, she must confront her fears and fight for survival.

While Ric Roman Waugh was aboard to direct the film when Sly was still aboard, the reins have now passed to ‘Non-Stop’s Jaume Collet-Serra, with the producing team of Rocket Science still aboard after all these different iterations.

Collet-Serra is busy rolling cameras on the movie now in Austria and offered up this statement:

“Shooting our movie on location in the Dolomites using large format cameras was imperative for us to show the scope and scale of the story we’re telling. We’re going to bring the audience a truly thrilling and visceral, premium theatrical experience. Lily in particular has gone above and beyond for the role, putting in real training and learning to climb. Her dedication has allowed us to capture some incredible shots we couldn’t have achieved otherwise, and the whole crew is blown away by her commitment.”

When will the new ‘Cliffhanger’ dangle into theaters?

Rocket Science will be offering domestic distribution rights to the movie, with CAA Media selling international.

Which is a longwinded way of saying that there is no studio aboard yet, so we’ll have to wait for any release date details. But the fact remains that the movie shooting at all is a big step forward.
