Moviefone: To begin with, the film has a lot of humor in it. What was your first reaction to the screenplay and did the funny read on the page?

Ryan Gosling: I think it was a combination of all those things. I mean, Andy is funny, Andy Weir, the writer of the book. It’s such a part of his voice, is to acknowledge that things are funny and not just make them intentionally serious. Also, I think what’s special about him is not to make things intentionally bleak. There’s an optimism about his work. There’s this sense of don’t fear the future, just figure it out. With that, and with that approach and letting curiosity take over for anxiety, there’s sort of an opportunity for humor in that.

MF: Can you talk about the friendship Grace forms with Rocky, and what was it like for you working with the puppeteers on set to create that relationship?

RG: I think it was an experience I’ll never get to have again. It just was a once in a lifetime experience to work in this way with Rocky and the Rocketeers, which is what we called them. That was his glam squad. He’s high maintenance. He’s a bit of a diva, but he’s worth it. He’s the best costar you could have.

MF: Were you surprised by the way Rocky looked and were you able to improvise with the puppeteers on set?

RG: I was involved in all of that, so I wasn’t surprised. There wasn’t a reveal moment, but I was surprised really by James Ortiz who came in and became that lead puppeteer for Rocky. Because he was just supposed to be the physical puppeteer, but he started reading the lines with me to just have someone to say the lines with. But then he had such a deep connection to Rocky, and he understood him so deeply that we got to the point where we could improvise for hours sometimes off script as the characters on camera. That’s where this starts to become something else where it feels like a real relationship, and it feels like it’s happening in real time because it is. That’s something I don’t think you could get any other way but shooting it practically.

MF: You spend a lot of the movie acting alone. What was that like for you to do those scenes by yourself and not have another actor to react to?

RG: I liked it. I did. It was fun because you get to explore any idea you have. It was an opportunity to just take every scene in any direction I could think of and experiment. So, I liked it.

MF: Can you talk about collaborating with directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller on set? Were they open to trying different things and seeing what works?

RG: Yes. I remember there’s a scene where I had been working alone for a long time and I was missing a partner and I said, “I need to make a friend out of a mop, so I have someone to talk to and I’m going to do that.” They were like, “Hold everything.” They both started scouring the set to find stuff we could do. We made this character we called “Moppy Ringwald”, and she became my dance partner and my friend for the day. That’s just what it was like working with them, that I could come to them with this need, and they were just on it and ready to shoot it. It ended up becoming a fun part of the film.

MF: Finally, your character is not the traditional movie hero and is even reluctant to go on this mission. What was it like for you to play a vulnerable character like that?

RG: I mean, I related to that. It was very relatable. I think that’s what’s so strong about this story is that you have a guy that’s not a natural hero that doesn’t see himself that way at all. He just wakes up and finds out that the fate of humanity is in his hands and his instinct is to run away, but he can’t. So, he must find some way to face it and deal with his fear and suddenly let curiosity take over from the anxiety he’s feeling in the panic. I think it was great for me and I think for an audience too to go through that experience of, “Okay, what happens after the panic? What happens when we say, we’re afraid, but now we must fix this?”

It’s been years since Phil Lord and Christopher Miller directed a feature film (they’ve produced plenty in the meantime) and their last attempt at a space epic, ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story,’ saw them replaced on the project by Ron Howard. Well, it’s clear that Lord and Miller have the vision for such an undertaking, because their return to the director’s chairs, ‘Project Hail Mary,’ is an often stunning, visually gorgeous sci-fi epic and perhaps the best film of its kind since Christopher Nolan’s ‘Interstellar.’

Based on the novel by Andy Weir (‘The Martian’), ‘Project Hail Mary’ also offers up something else that’s been missing from a lot of sci-fi in these dystopian times: hope. While the movie falters here and there, it also suggests that sentient beings, human or otherwise, can find enough common ground to bring out the best in each other, even at the bleakest moments.

Former molecular biologist turned middle school science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up disoriented on a massive space vessel light-years from Earth, with no memory of who he is, why he’s there, or where he’s going. The only other two crew members – including the captain — are dead, and as Grace’s memory gradually returns (via flashbacks), so do the details of his journey.

It turns out that a vast string of micro-organisms, stretching from the Sun to Venus and dubbed the Petrova line, consumes electromagnetic radiation and is essentially draining our star of its energy and dimming it. The same colony, dubbed by Grace as an ‘astrophage,’ has done this to other stars – with the exception of Tau Ceti, which has resisted the infection.

When Grace discovers that the energy of the astrophage can be harnessed to power faster-than-light travel, a massive global consortium constructs a starship and sends a crew – with Grace as a reluctant, last-minute substitute for the science officer, who’s killed in an accident — to discover how Tau Ceti has survived and hopefully save our sun and civilization.

Once Grace arrives at Tau Ceti, however, he’s met by an even larger alien spacecraft and its sole occupant, a rock-like being with whom he initially struggles to communicate. But as they develop a means to interact, Grace discovers that the creature – who he dubs Rocky – is there for the same reason as him, and the two of them join forces to discover what is protecting Tau Ceti and whether they can use it to save their own planets.

Scripted by Drew Goddard, who also adapted the 2015 film of ‘The Martian,’ ‘Project Hail Mary’ is in many ways a mashup of a number of other iconic sci-fi properties, including ‘Interstellar,’ ‘E.T.,’ ‘Contact,’ ‘Star Trek,’ and ‘2001: A Space Odyssey,’ among others. But Lord, Miller, and Goddard make the film a unique celebration of science fiction itself – as well as science. As hard as the science can get, the film presents its premise with terrific clarity. Science and the way it can bring out the best in humanity (and other species) are important elements of the story.

It does sometimes feels like Goddard tried to get every page of the book onscreen – the movie’s 160-minute runtime might have been shortened by 20 minutes or so — and the tonal shifts as Grace navigates his initial terror and uncertainty, followed by his whimsical relationship with Rocky, sometimes undercuts the stakes. But the movie rallies for a thrilling, emotionally moving climax, buttressed by some truly amazing visuals. From top to bottom, the craftsmanship in this film is nothing less than exceptional. Charles Wood‘s production design, Greig Fraser’s eye-popping cinematography, the visual effects and creature creation all make the universe of ‘Project Hail Mary’ tactile, immersive, and believable. This is truly a movie to see on the biggest screen you can.

This is initially a Ryan Gosling solo joint – he’s onscreen alone, especially in the film’s first half, for long stretches of time. Ryland Grace is a man who runs away from responsibility in every aspect of his life – his career, his relationships – but eventually learns not just to run toward it, but embrace it, becoming a hero along the way. Gosling shows us perhaps his widest range to date, taking Grace through disorientation, fear, cowardice, grief, despair, and eventually hope and purpose, giving a performance that anchors the film and may be his best yet.

But ‘PHM’ is also a two-hander in its second half, as Grace and Rocky get to know each other, becoming collaborators and eventually friends. Rocky was played on set by James Ortiz, and it’s his voice we hear as the Eridanian as well – and Ortiz delivers, giving Rocky real personality where a more recognizable actor’s voice might have simply given him that thespian’s persona. It’s a nuanced performance that combines seamlessly with the digital and practical effects used to bring Rocky to life.

The rest of the cast is relatively small, but the always welcome Sandra Hüller is excellent and soulful as the leader of the project, while Ken Leung and Milana Vayntrub provide some effective moments as Grace’s doomed crewmates.

    Final Thoughts

Like ‘The Martian,’ ‘Project Hail Mary’ feels like it’s grounded in real science, and features a lone protagonist in a seemingly hopeless situation at the center of its narrative. But ‘Project Hail Mary’ expands on the themes in both of Weir’s stories, with Lord and Miller’s direction, Goddard’s screenplay, and the relationship between Grace and Rocky making this a deeply humanist experience amidst all the filmmaking razzle-dazzle.

This is a movie that says that an answer is possible, even in the darkest of times, and that collaboration and understanding, rather that mistrust and division, is the only way forward for any species. And all of that is couched in a science fiction story as exciting and awe-inspiring as any we’ve seen in recent years. Its relatively minor glitches aside, ‘Project Hail Mary’ may end up becoming a genre classic of its time.

‘Project Hail Mary’ receives a score of 85 out of 100.

According to reporter Jeff Sneider, Universal has a movie project based on the ‘Archie’ comics from powerhouse filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and Tom King, whose ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ comics run is the source material for next year’s latest DC Studios movie.

Exactly what the new take will be remains to be seen, but it’s certainly going to be eagerly watched given Lord and Miller’s involvement.

    What’s the story of ‘Archie’?

The ‘Archie’ comics series, which have been published for 85 years, follows the high school hijinks of the title character and his main squeezes, Veronica and Betty. It has been turned into any number of shows and movies.

While ‘Riverdale’ was steeped in a ‘Twin Peaks’-like noir and followed the underbelly of the small town where Archie and the gang lived, the new tone of the new movie is being kept a mystery for now.

Here’s what Lord and Miller said in a statement:

“We are longtime fans of Archie, Veronica, Betty, and the gang in all of their iterations. When we heard Tom King’s take on the classic material, we instantly thought it made sense as an event movie for all audiences — both lifelong fans and a whole new generation. We’re so excited to bring these beloved characters to the big screen.”

Emma Watts, who used to run 20th Century Studios and now has her own production company, teamed up with King (who on the scriptwriting front has been working on DC Studios’ HBO series ‘Lanterns’) to develop an initial pitch, which they then presented to Lord and Miller.

They, in turn, took it to Universal under the terms of their first look deal.

What else are Lord and Miller working on?

The ever-busy filmmaking duo have live-action sci-fi comedy thriller ‘Project Hail Mary’, adapted from ‘The Martian’s Andy Weir’s book headed our way next year.

‘Project Hail Mary’, which stars Ryan Gosling, will land in theaters on March 20th, 2026.

And then there’s the small matter of the third ‘Spider-Verse’ movie, ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’, with the latest animated outing due in 2027.

When will ‘Archie’ be on screens?

With the project still rattling around the development zone, we wouldn’t expect to see a release date announcement until it is closer to being finalized.

Amazon has popped up at CinemaCon a couple of times in the past, but usually partnered with one of the big theatrical studios. But as Amazon MGM Studios plans to hugely expand its cinematic footprint (having also joined the Motion Picture Association), it is also making its big, proper debut at the movie trade show.

Given the recent giant news about Amazon gaining full control of the Bond franchise, there was plenty of expectation of some announcement about that, though even with the hiring of producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman to oversee the company’s plans, unless the deal to bring them in was sealed a lot earlier than reported, was it likely that we’d have anything beyond the company touting the new arrangement?

It was an unusually late schedule time-wise, presumably because the likes of Sony, Warners, Disney and co. had snapped up the prime spots. But as a statement of intent from the new kid on the block, it had to deliver.

So let’s explore what was actually revealed…

    Project Hail Mary

The latest Phil Lord and Chris Miller joint (that isn’t a ‘Spider-Verse’ offering) is this adaptation of ‘The Martian’ author Andy Weir’s book.

It’s another tale of a reluctant astronaut, this one played by Ryan Gosling, who has to try and save the Earth. The presentation kicked off with the impressive first teaser for the sci-fi movie. Set to Harry Styles’ ‘Sign of the Times,’ it looks very different to other Lord/Miller movies, but also great.

Gosling plays a schoolteacher recruited by Sandra Huller to save the planet, which is threatened by a dying sun. “You want the right stuff. I’ve got the wrong stuff! I put the NOT in astronaut. I can’t even moonwalk!” he claims amusingly (it’s even funnier coming from the man who played Neil Armstrong in ‘First Man.’)

Mike Hopkins, Head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios took the stage to announce that the company is committed to theatrical releases, with 14 working titles being readied for next year and 15 planned for 2027. They’re apparently ahead of schedule.

And the ‘Project Hail Mary’ team –– Lord, Miller and Gosling –– arrived on stage to caution the crowd that all the footage was work in progress, with Gosling singling cinematographer Greig Fraser (who also worked on the ‘Dune’ movies) out for particular praise.

Lord and Miller explained how much of themselves they poured into the movie, the biggest project they’ve ever worked on.

Gosling: “This is why we go to the movies, and I’m not just saying it because I’m in it. I’m ALSO a producer on this movie.”

    Says Miller:

“Thank you for seeing movies on the big screen with the most weird and disturbing popcorn buckets imaginable.” Can’t wait to see their ‘Hail Mary’ bucket…

There was more talk of other future projects, including the Michael B. Jordan starring/directed ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’ and ‘Verity,’ the romantic thriller adapted from Colleen Hoover’s novel and directed by Michael Showalter.

‘The Thomas Crown Affair’ apparently “has a few unexpected, modern twists.” Bradford Young is the cinematographer on the movie, and ‘Black Panther’s Ruth E. Carter will handle the costumes.

‘Verity,’ meanwhile, had a teaser to show, featuring the song ‘Fade Into You’ by Mazzy Star, and introduced by a fun video by the cast.

‘Verity’ has a May15th, 2026 release date set, while ‘Thomas Crown’ is too early in the process to score its own slot yet.

Andrew Garfield’s character is accused of assaulting Ayo Edebiri’s, and it becomes major news after Julia Roberts’ character, an attorney, takes on his case.

Edebiri and Garfield showed up on stage with Guadagnino, and Garfield praised his director, who he said he’d wanted to work with for 15 years.

The new Chris Pratt sci-fi pic ‘Mercy’ was the next to be spotlighted, with the first footage of the movie, directed by Timur Bekmambetov.

It’s a blend of courtroom drama and action where an AI program serves as the judge, jury, and executioner. Pratt has 90 minutes to prove he didn’t kill his wife, using all technology available.

Since the trailer introduces the audiences to a high-tech chair where Pratt’s character is confined, what better way to promote than by having Pratt in said chair on stage for the presentation, jokingly forced to say a proper thank you to the assembled exhibitors, lest he had to Uber home.

Co-starring Rebecca Ferguson, the film will be in cinemas on January 23rd, 2026.

The audience reaction was laughter at first –– it is a fun concept –– but the cast, including Hugh Jackman, Emma Thompson, Hong Chau, Nicholas Braun and Nicholas Galitzine, is certainly impressive, and the tone of the footage a lot of fun.

Vivica A. Fox took the stage with some of the other cast to show a trailer.

It’s the story of two little girls and their mother who were the victims of an arson attack at the hands of their father (Sterling K. Brown). Their mother’s dying wish? That the two girls, now adults, kill their father.

It’s described as a Greek tragedy crossed with Afropunk and the classic spaghetti Western. The cast also includes Janelle Monáe, Erika Alexander, Kara Young and Mallori Johnson.

After that, head of film Courtenay Valenti and marketing chief Sue Kroll were introduced to extoll the company’s commitment to theatrical and that it is ramping up more productions from the Orion and United Artists.

Affleck, Bernthal, Cynthia Addai Robinson and O’Connor were there to present an extended trailer for the action movie, which indicates that this sequel leans into the buddy comedy interplay between the brothers played by Affleck and Bernthal. While the trailer’s humor worked, the scripted banter on stage left something to the imagination, though it wasn’t really the fault of the cast.

    • Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson are directing ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.’
    • The movie will continue the story from ‘Across the Spider-Verse.’
    • The ‘Spider-Man’ animated sequel doesn’t yet have a confirmed release.

Given the reception for ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ and last year’s ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ you’d think Sony –– which really needs success in its Marvel arm given the flops of its more recent live-action superhero offerings –– would be going full speed ahead on the third outing, ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,’ there has seemingly been a slowdown in its development.

Which is even more surprising, since the first two films in Sony’s trilogy were critical and commercial successes for the studio, grossing a combined $1.07 billion at the global box office.

Additionally, ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ won the Animated Feature Oscar in 2019, and its acclaimed sequel, ‘Across the Spider-Verse’, became the highest-grossing animated film for the studio to date.

Yet here we are in 2024 with no release date locked in for the third movie and plenty of chatter about delays, script re-writes and issues with ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse,’ produced as ever by Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

Though the second and third movies were supposedly being produced back to back, there have been changes afoot behind the scenes, with Sony just now announcing that Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson are directing the film.

Persichetti previously served as part of the Oscar-winning directorial team on ‘Into the Spider-Verse,’ and was an executive producer on ‘Across the Spider-Verse.’ Thompson served as the production designer on ‘Into the Spider-Verse,’ where he was instrumental in developing the franchise’s groundbreaking visual style. He went on to join the directorial team on the sequel alongside Joaquim Dos Santos and Kemp Powers.

Powers and Dons Santos have since moved on, but this has slightly the feel of the studio trying to get some good news about the ‘Spider’-sequel as concerns rise.

Here’s Persichetti and Thompson’s statement on the gig:

“We have had the immense privilege of being part of Miles’ journey from the very beginning and directing the conclusion to his story is beyond exciting. The creativity and care poured into every minute of this project has been truly inspiring. We have crafted what we feel is a very satisfying ending, and we can’t wait for fans to experience it – we’re bringing everything we’ve got!”

And this was the statement from Lord and Miller:

“Bob and Justin’s fingerprints are woven into the DNA of these films, and their passion for Miles’ journey shines through in every frame of his last adventure. There is nothing more rewarding than collaborating with creative partners with bold vision and brilliant execution like Bob and Justin. We are thrilled to work with them once again to create a beautiful and satisfying conclusion to this story.”

Finally, here’s Kristine Belson, President of Sony Pictures Animation:

“We’re very happy to officially announce the directorial duo behind the final chapter of the Spider-Verse saga. Bob, Justin, and the entire filmmaking team have been hard at work crafting something truly spectacular, and we’ve been blown away by what we’ve seen so far –– there’s more work ahead to bring Miles’ story to a satisfying close and we are confident that they are perfect pair to pull it off.”

‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ lands in theaters on June 2nd, 2023.

The exact plot is still under wraps, though since ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ ended on a cliffhanger with Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) arriving in universe where one of his alternates has become the villain known as the Prowler, and a rescue attempt launched by some of his friends, you know that story will need to be wrapped up somehow.

Amy Pascal and Avi Arad, who are the general overseers of Sony’s Marvel-affiliated Spider-Verse, talked to Variety about possibilities for other movies.

Among them? A live-action film focused on the Miles Morales character and a ‘Spider-Woman’ animated spin-off.

What did the Spider-team say about a Miles Morales movie?

Spider-Man/Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) in Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animations’ SPIDER-MAN™: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE.

Morales, who first appeared in the pages of Marvel Comics in ‘Ultimate Fallout #4’ in 2011, has become a popular figure for fans who enjoy the more diverse characterization.

As the emotional core of the ‘Spider-Verse’ movies, he’s also crossed over into a more mainstream movie audience.

“You’ll see all of it. It’s all happening,” Pascal said last year at the ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ premiere.

On the small screen, the ‘Spider-Noir’ series (which is drawn from a character who was used well in ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ and is likely to return for ‘Beyond’) is still moving forward at Prime Video with Nicolas Cage leading a cast that includes Jack Huston, Brendan Gleeson, Lamorne Morris and Li Jun Li. That show is filming now.

And, of course, there is the next Sony/Marvel ‘Spider-Man’ movie starring Tom Holland, which has ‘Shang-Chi’s Destin Daniel Cretton directing. It’s due to film next year and is set for release in July 2026.

    • Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot will run the show.

Marvel and Sony have had joint success with the most recent ‘Spider-Man’ live-action movie trilogy and the latter is seeing great results via the ‘Spider-Verse’ animated outings.

Yet Amazon’s attempts to jump on the spider-wagon has been less successful so far –– the ‘Silk: Spider Society’ series it had in the works was scrapped in May.

Still, it has the Spider-Man Noir series now called ‘Spider-Noir’, with Nicolas Cage in the lead, which is moving forward. The show is now adding ‘New Girl’ and ‘Fargo’ actor Lamorne Morris and ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’s Brendan Gleeson.

Morris, as reported by Variety, will play Robbie Robertson, while Gleeson’s role is being kept quiet, though he’s apparently a villain.

While the character (voiced by Cage) appeared in ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ (and briefly at the end of (‘Across the Spider-Verse’, pointing to more in the next film, ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’), ‘Spider-Noir’ will be its own, live-action take on the grizzled hero.

The official logline for the show fills in a little more detail: it’ll follow the story of an aging and down on his luck private investigator in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.

    • The movie will be on screens in 2026.

Given the success of 2015’s ‘The Martian’ –– which saw Matt Damon starring as an astronaut trapped on Mars, was directed by Ridley Scott, notched a big profit at the box office and was nominated for seven Oscars –– it’s almost surprising it has taken this long for another tome by Andy Weir, who wrote the source book, to properly launch its journey to theaters.

But then, the wheels of development grind slowly, and while at least one other book, ‘Artemis’, set on the moon, seems locked in limbo, another, ‘Project Hail Mary’, now has a star, directors and even a release date.

‘Project Hail Mary’ is set in the near future. Our hero is Ryland Grace, a schoolteacher-turned-astronaut who wakes up from a coma, alone, on a space station with no memory of who he is or his mission.

His memory returns in bursts and he pieces together that he was sent to the Tau Ceti solar system, 12 light-years from Earth, to reverse the impact of a space event that had already hurled our planet into the early stages of an Ice Age.

As details of the mission unravel, he must call on all of his scientific training and sheer ingenuity, but he might not have to do it alone…

So… ‘The Martian’ meets ‘The Hangover’? Would watch. Will watch.

Weir’s book was published in 2021, and since then has been on a faster track to screens than ‘Artemis’.

Drew Goddard, who adapted ‘The Martian’ (and scored an Oscar nomination for his efforts), has once more written the script.

Instead of Scott returning to direct, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who are technically also still attached to ‘Artemis’, but have seen ‘Hail Mary’ move forward into prime position (let’s be honest: scheduling movies is like finding launch windows for Mars missions).

The pair will hopefully bring their instinct for balancing comedy and drama, and while their last crack at sci-fi didn’t quite work out (that would be their ill-fated stint on ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’, where they ended up creatively clashing with Lucasfilm and were ultimately replaced by Ron Howard), you’ve got to have faith in the duo who have made winners such as ‘The Lego Movie’ and are key players on the ‘Spider-Verse’ franchise.

Finally, Ryan Gosling is in place to be the central astronaut with memory issues. He’s been on a role of late, so we’re hoping for something that brings dry, smart humor to go with the space drama, as seen in ‘The Martian’.

When will ‘Project Hail Mary’ be in theaters?

That’s the final piece to fall into place… Amazon MGM Studios has planted a flag in a March 20th, 2026, release date for the movie. Start your countdown clocks!

This past week has not seen Sony’s attempts to make Marvel content showered in glory. ‘Madame Web’, the latest movie from the company to feature a side-character from the ‘Spider-Man’ universe, has gone down in flames with critics and audiences.

There is some good news for the studio, though, as word has emerged that its developing live-action ‘Spider-Man Noir’ series, set up at Amazon’s Prime Video service might be getting a shot of cool from Nicolas Cage eyeing a deal to star.

The show, which would adapt the hard-boiled, tough-talking comic book character mainstream audiences really came to know via ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’, has been in development since at least last year with ‘Spider-Verse’ duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller working alongside ‘The Lost City’s Oren Uziel to craft it.

Nothing has been officially released about the storyline for the potential show, but if it even roughly follows the character’s narrative, we’ll be seeing a grizzled, older take on Peter Parker patrolling the streets of a monochrome 1930s New York as he seeks to avenge the deaths of his uncle Ben Parker to the hands of the cannibal Adrian Toomes and his mentor Ben Urich by the city’s major crime lord, Norman Osborn.

His Spidey origin story? He’s bitten by a seemingly venomous spider he unearths while investigating a smuggling ring, awakes inside a cocoon and emerges from it, now possessing super-human abilities similar to a spider. So yeah, that old tale.

Noir (as he’s sometimes simply known) made his paper debut in the pages of his eponymous comic in 2009, created by David Hine, Fabrice Sapolsky Carmine Di Giandomenico and Marko Djurdjevic, but he’s become best known via ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ where he helped Miles Morales, Gwen Stacey and the others sort out the multiversal issues caused by the Kingpin’s machinations.

How is Nicolas Cage involved in the ‘Spider-Man Noir’ series?

    Cage handshake

Cage provided the gruff vocals for Noir in his ‘Spider-Verse’ movie scenes, and while sequel ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ used archive recordings as Hailee Steinfeld’s Gwen Stacey gathered the team from the first movie to launch an attempt to help Miles Morales, signs are Cage will have a larger role in the next one, ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’.

Of course, the series version will all depend on Cage actually making a deal, but The Ankler reports he’s in serious talks.

The news is not as great for ‘Silk: Spider-Society’, which was announced around the same time as the Noir show.

That series, about Cindy Moon, a Korean American classmate of the more contemporary Peter Parker’s, who is similarly bitten by a radioactive spider and possesses an advanced Spider-Sense (known as Silk Sense), is seemingly being paused for a creative overhaul with ‘The Walking Dead’ veteran show-runner still on board developing that show alongside Lord and Miller.

(L to R) Reggie (Will Ferrell), Maggie (Isla Fisher), Hunter (Randall Park) and Bug (Jamie Foxx) in ‘Strays,’ directed by Josh Greenbaum.

In theaters now, ‘Strays’ represents an attempt to bring the sort of bawdy comedy found in the likes of ‘The Hangover’ to an animal quest film more along the lines of family classics such as ‘The Incredible Journey’ and ‘Homeward Bound’. The result is hit-and-miss, but when it works, it’s bark-out-loud funny.

Comedy/producing titans Phil Lord and Chris Miller (who are behind the likes of Apple TV+ series ‘The Afterparty’ and ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ already this year) brought outrageous violence and dark comedy to screens with February’s ‘Cocaine Bear’. ‘Strays’ definitely veers more towards lighthearted, raunchy comedy, but bears their winning touch.

When Reggie (Will Ferrell), a naïve, relentlessly optimistic Border Terrier, is abandoned on the mean city streets by his lowlife owner, Doug (Will Forte), Reggie is certain that his beloved owner would never leave him on purpose.

But once Reggie falls in with a fast-talking, foul-mouthed Boston Terrier named Bug (Jamie Foxx), a stray who loves his freedom and believes that owners are for suckers, Reggie finally realizes he was in a toxic relationship and begins to see Doug for the heartless sleazeball that he is.

Determined to seek revenge, Reggie, Bug and Bug’s pals — Maggie (Isla Fisher), a smart Australian Shepherd who has been sidelined by her owner’s new puppy, and Hunter (Randall Park), an anxious Great Dane who’s stressed out by his work as an emotional support animal — together hatch a plan and embark on an epic adventure to help Reggie find his way home… And make Doug pay by biting off the appendage he loves the most (it’s not his foot).

    Who else is in ‘Strays’?

‘Strays’ boasts a cast that either voices dogs (or other creatures) objects or plays human characters in the story including Josh Gad, Harvey Guillén, Rob Riggle, Brett Gelman, Jamie Demetriou and Sofia Vergara.

    Is ‘Strays’ a good dog?

Director Josh Greenbaum on the set of 'Strays.'
Director Josh Greenbaum on the set of ‘Strays.’

Directed by Josh Greenbaum, who brought us 2021’s sublimely silly ‘Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar’, ‘Strays’ is written by Dan Perrault, best known for ‘American Vandal’ and ‘Players’ on TV.

If you ever wanted to see ‘Saturday Night Live’ veteran Will Forte –– more normally associated with amiable weirdoes –– playing one of the worst dog owners to appear on screens, then this is the movie you’ve been waiting for. Yet Forte’s Doug, a weed-smoking, porn-obsessed loser who begrudgingly goes along with the idea when his girlfriend adopts adorable terrier Reggie (voiced by Will Ferrell), is not the star of this movie, Reggie is.

Along, that is, with the new friends he makes when Doug abandons him. Foxx’s Bug is a streetwise pup with an ego bigger than his frame, but who makes for a good mentor to Reggie, who has only ever known life with humans.

Bug (Jamie Foxx) and Reggie (Will Ferrell) in 'Strays,' directed by Josh Greenbaum.
(L to R) Bug (Jamie Foxx) and Reggie (Will Ferrell) in ‘Strays,’ directed by Josh Greenbaum.

The pooch pals –– also including Randall Park’s Hunter, a former police dog trainee who now works as a therapy dog at a hospice (and keeps a cone of shame on permanently for his own insecurity issues) and Isla Fisher’s Maggie, blessed with an amazing nose and a crush on Hunter –– are the highlight of the movie, a compelling blend of well-trained real animals with CG mouth manipulation.

While they don’t all enjoy the same character development as Reggie or Bug, they’re an appealing, funny foursome and their adventures offer a lot of entertainment. With experienced performers bringing character as well as laughs to the roles, this features such memorable moments as the leads encountering Labrador Gus (voiced by Josh Gad), a hilarious take on the noble narrator dog we’ve met in movies including ‘A Dog’s Purpose’ and ‘Racing in the Rain’, and who is harboring a very dark secret.

Plus, all of Reggie’s interactions with Doug are good for a laugh, even as dog owners (and anyone who just loves animals in general) will loathe his living guts.

It moves along at a swift pace, never outstays its welcome and makes you care about our furry foursome in ways you don’t expect at the start. Oh, and we’re fairly certain that this is the only movie you’ll see this year that features Sofia Vergara as the voice of Delilah, a couch that Bug enjoys having sex with.

Bug (Jamie Foxx) and Reggie (Will Ferrell) in 'Strays,' directed by Josh Greenbaum.
(L to R) Bug (Jamie Foxx) and Reggie (Will Ferrell) in ‘Strays,’ directed by Josh Greenbaum.

Not everything about the movie works; it does indulge in some first-base dog and other humor. We’ve seen a hundred variations on the age-old dog vs. mailman scenario and one small tweak aside (one plays into how Reggie makes it home), the movie doesn’t really find a fresh take.

There are also scenes such as the canines discovering a patch of mushrooms in a forest and gobbling them down, only to go on a wild drug trip. A few moments work well (reality shifting to show Hunter as a sock puppet with human hands), but otherwise it’s the sort of gag that has been done many, many times. Ditto overly macho police dog Rolf (Rob Riggle), whose best use is Maggie calling him “Adolf” to his bemused reaction.

And there are times when the reveling in poop, pee and eating disgusting things jokes stretches a little too thin, but if you were already on board with the movie, you know what you’re in for.

Yet there are so many inventive uses of the dogs’ worldview (fireworks at a county fair serve as the setting for a war movie spoof for our spooked hounds who look to escape) that the balance of great jokes to clunkers is heavily on the positive side.

It was about time that the dog movie got the full-on spoof comedy treatment, and ‘Strays’ works to bring the heart and well as the gross-out gags.

‘Strays’ receives 8 out of 10 stars.

Launched with the first two episodes on Apple TV+, the second season of ‘The Afterparty’ manages to take the story in interesting new directors while also maintaining what made the first so entertaining.

Created by Chris Miller and produced by Miller alongside regular creative partner Phil Lord, ‘The Afterparty’ has the clever conceit of presenting the events of the story from the different points of view of the various characters, all portrayed in different genres.

It’s a year later and the pair are attending the wedding of Zoë’s sister Grace (Poppy Liu), who is getting married to wealthy tech type Edgar (Zach Woods) at his family’s expansive estate north of San Francisco.

Aniq fails to make a good impression his girlfriend’s family, but that pales in comparison when Edgar is discovered dead the morning after the wedding (along with his pet lizard, Roxana).

Soon, accusations are being thrown around and skeletons from the past on all sides are coming to light. Aniq contacts Detective Danner –– or rather former Detective Danner (Tiffany Haddish) –– who cracked the case in the first season (and is now trying to write a book about the experience) to come and solve the new murder mystery.

Is ‘The Afterparty’ Season 2 an event worth attending?

As we mentioned, the idea of splitting the episodes between the various characters’ viewpoints and utilizing a different genre for each one is no longer as fresh and new as the first, but the show’s creative team has worked hard to make it feel different and worthwhile rather than a retread.

Part of that is rounding up a superb new ensemble to bring the characters to life, with the highlights including Cho as the worldly, weird uncle that Zoë and Grace idolized as youngsters, but haven’t seen for years after he fell out with their parents. His re-introduction to their lives (organized by Edgar and Sebastian) is a fantastic showcase for Cho, who has rarely gotten to play such a flamboyant, weird character.

Jeong is also great –– a picky shaved ice magnate (he’s quick to point out that it’s Taiwanese rather than Hawaiian) –– gives him a chance to do the sort of shouty, nervy character who works well playing against the others.

Woods’ Edgar has his own set of quirks; a painfully socially awkward genius whose closest companion is his pet reptile, and while it might come across as the character he played or some he interacted with on ‘Silicon Valley’, he brings something new to this role. Kudos also to the effects team bringing Roxana the lizard to life –– she’s almost as much of a character as she is.

Among the genres the season offers are Jane Austen-style period drama (for Grace’s story of how she met and fell for Edgar and her worries that Zoë isn’t on board with their whirlwind romance), and one set within the word of TikTok and other social media trends.

And a breakout hit of the season to come is the episode focused on Danner investigating a different case. We won’t go into any big spoilers but suffice to say that fans of 1980s and 1990s thrillers (and food) will heartily enjoy the craziness on display. You can also expect to see a spoof of heist movies and 1950s melodrama.

Through it all, Haddish and Richardson provide reliable anchors –– he all nervous energy and trying to do what’s right, she the quick-thinking, smack-talking type who knows that everyone lies at some point.

There are the same level of twists and turns this time around, the various viewpoints providing different laughs and the emotional quotient remaining high. These are characters you’ll enjoy getting to know and figuring out who might have dangerous motives and reasons to wish Edgar harm.

It also generates plenty of knowing stories about the tensions both within Asian families and towards them –– at one point Jeong’s Feng points out that white people clustered whispering is never a good thing.

Lord and Miller have long proved to be skilled at taking comedy and genre and twisting them together, and ‘The Afterparty’ continues to be a great example of that.

    ‘Afterparty’ problems?

Not every genre pick is quite as effective, which means you might find yourself going from an episode you truly enjoy to one that only offers minor chuckles.

Yet this is the only real issue with the new show, which has made a successful return to Apple’s streaming service and marks one of the best comedies on TV at the moment. The only other problem you could have is with the weekly drip feed release schedule –– your patience might be taxed waiting for each episode of the remaining eight to drop, but it’s worth it.

And the only guarantee we can’t give is that the show sticks the landing this time and resolves the mystery effectively, as critics were not provided with the crucial final episode. But on the evidence of the season so far and the great quality of the first, we have faith.
