‘Green Book’ Wins Top PGA Awards Prize, May Be Poised for Oscar Glory

    Universal

The Producers Guild of America handed out its annual awards over the weekend, and the winner of the group’s highest honor may be on the verge of scooping up some major statuettes at next month’s Oscars, too.

Green Book” was the night’s biggest honoree at the PGA Awards ceremony on Saturday, taking home the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures (the PGA equivalent of the Best Picture prize). The film was co-produced by Jim Burke, Charles B. Wessler, Brian Currie, Peter Farrelly (who also directed), and Nick Vallelonga.

“When you make ‘Dumb and Dumber,’ you don’t expect to ever get an award,” Farrelly joked as he accepted the award on Saturday.

Many awards season prognosticators didn’t expect this kind of success, either, judging by the reactions going around on social media. But while the film has received mixed reviews, there’s no denying that it now has some serious awards momentum — and history on its side — heading into the Oscars, which will announce their nominations on Tuesday.

In a surprise turn, snarky superhero flick “Deadpool” also landed a nomination. While the PGA nominees don’t always line up with Oscar nominees, the unexpected honor gives the Ryan Reynolds movie a big boost.

In the animated feature category, Disney ruled with three nominees: “Finding Dory,” “Moana,” and Golden Globe winner “Zootopia.”

Last year, “The Big Short” won the PGA Award. It went on to lose out on the top Oscar prize to “Spotlight.” The PGA Awards will be announced Saturday, Jan. 28.

  • PGA Film Nominees Hail ‘Mad Max,’ ‘Sicario,’ Snub ‘Carol,’ ‘Room’

The Producers Guild of America announced on Tuesday its slate of nominees for the best films of 2015, and once again, this awards season is proving divisive, based on the eclectic mix of movies recognized by the guild — and those that were surprisingly snubbed.

Unexpected honorees included “Ex Machina” and “Sicario,” two films released earlier this year to critical acclaim, but which have been absent from most awards season chatter until now. Other populist fare represented on the PGA’s nomination slate included the hit “Straight Outta Compton,” as well as apocalyptic flick “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which is proving itself a strong contender to muscle its way into a Best Picture Oscar nomination as it continues to snatch statuettes and nominations.

As with most awards, there were bound to be some glaring omissions, but the biggest one of all may be “Carol,” which failed to earn one of the PGA’s 10 Best Film slots, despite plenty of love from other awards shows and critics groups. As Variety notes, the last eight winners of the PGA’s top prize have gone on to win the Best Picture Oscar, and up until now “Carol” had been seen as one of the biggest challengers to longtime frontrunner “Spotlight” (which did earn a nomination). After today, that may no longer be the case. Fellow critically-lauded flick “Room” was also left off the PGA’s list, as was Quentin Tarantino’s much-hyped “The Hateful Eight.”

Winners will be announced at a ceremony on January 23. The full list of 2015 PGA film nominees is below.

The Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures:

    “Brooklyn”
Producers: Finola Dwyer & Amanda Posey

  • Here Are the 2014 PGA Awards Film and Television Nominees

The Producers Guild of America announced Monday its list of film and television nominees for its 2014 awards, and the list is as notable for its omissions as it is for its selections.

Among the films in the running for the top prize — known formally as the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures — are “American Sniper,” “Birdman,” “Boyhood,” “Foxcatcher,” “Gone Girl,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “The Imitation Game,” “Nightcrawler,” “The Theory of Everything,” and “Whiplash.”

But it’s the films that were left off the list that had awards season prognosticators in a tizzy Monday. “Selma,” “Unbroken,” and “Into the Woods” all failed to score nominations, leading some to wonder if those movies’ Oscar chances have dimmed significantly.

On the television front, “American Horror Story: Freak Show,” “Fargo,” “The Normal Heart,” “The Roosevelts: An Intimate History,” and “Sherlock” all scored nominations in the long-form television category. Those series join the previously-announced nominees in the episodic television category, which includes “Breaking Bad,” “Downton Abbey,” “Game of Thrones,” “House of Cards,” and “True Detective.”
