    • Peter Berg and Taylor Sheridan are developing a ‘Call of Duty’ movie.
    • It’ll be based on the bestselling Activision Games.
    • The movie is based at Paramount.

Does Taylor Sheridan really have much free time given how many TV shows he’s overseeing. Even with delegating to other showrunners, we wonder when he found time to take on another project –– presumably between three and four a.m.

But found time he has, teaming up with ‘Lone Survivor’ director Peter Berg to adapt Activision’s huge-selling ‘Call of Duty’ game series into a new movie for Paramount.

The games have been in development as a potential movie since at least 2015, and at one point, no less a director than Steven Spielberg pitched a take.

Still, the creator of ‘Lioness’ and the director behind a variety of battle-happy movies feel like the right duo to make it work –– with the added bonus that they’re friends and have collaborated before on the likes of ‘Hell or High Water.’

What’s the story of ‘Call of Duty’?

‘Call of Duty Black Ops 6’ from Activision.

‘Call of Duty’ is backed by Microsoft-owned video game publisher Activision. It encompasses more than 30 mainline games released since the original title debuted in 2003.

When the deal to make a movie was announced in September, Variety heard that while the pact is focused on making one movie, the deal includes the potential for Paramount to expand the ‘COD’ universe across film and TV.

As for the actual plotline, that’s yet to be revealed, but given the warfare-focused first-person shooter style of the game, not to mention both Sheridan and Berg’s love of action, we’d expect conflict.

Berg has been busy in the TV sphere himself, most recently overseeing ‘American Primeval’ for Netflix.

He’s attached as a producer to a variety of shows and movies, including upcoming action thriller ‘The Beast.’

Right now, he’s directing based-on-truth movie ‘The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II.’

And Sheridan? What isn’t he doing right now?

The biggest recent news for the prolific writer/creator is that his professional services were poached by NBC Universal, and in 2029 he’ll move his TV duties there.

Paramount still retains his various ‘Yellowstone’ shows and other series created under his deal with the company. And ‘Call of Duty’ will represent one of the final film projects he works on for the studio.

When will ‘Call of Duty’ be in theaters?

Paramount has yet to specify when the movie might arrive, most likely waiting to see if it makes it out of the development boot camp.

Director Peter Berg seems to be on something of a winning streak in his deal with Netflix of late.

He directed limited series ‘Painkiller,’ which spent five weeks in the Global Top 10 TV List (English), garnering 29.1 million views. And more recently, ‘American Primeval’ was on the same list for four weeks, racking up 35.1 million views following its debut in January.

Now, via Deadline, the first project from the renewed contract is in the works, with Nicholas Galitzine and Bill Skarsgård attached to star in ‘Mosquito Bowl,’ which finds him in true-story territory (and sports, something which he’s done well with in the past).

The new movie is based on Buzz Bissinger’s New York Times bestseller ‘The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II.’

The film is set after the attack on Pearl Harbor, when four of America’s top college football stars set their fame aside to enlist in the Marines.

As they prepare for the brutal invasion of Okinawa, they take part in a legendary game featuring some of the greatest players in history –– a game that, for many, will be the last they ever play.

We don’t yet know what roles Galitzine and Skarsgård are playing, but we can see them as two of the gridiron stars.

Berg is working once again with ‘The Revenant’ writer Mark L. Smith on the movie, continuing their partnership after collaborating on ‘American Primeval.’ We predict this one, while it doesn’t exactly have a happy ending (see: World War II and survival rates), should at least be slightly more positive than the hard-bitten frontier series.

And that’s not the only reunion here –– ‘Mosquito Bowl’ sees Berg back partnering with Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, who backed on the hit football movie ‘Friday Night Lights’ (which perhaps not-so-coincidentally was also based on a Bissinger tome) and the series take that followed. The pair are developing a reboot of the latter.

Where else can we see Nicholas Galitzine?

The rising star, who broke out with movies including ‘Purple Hearts’ and ‘The Idea of You’ (the latter opposite Anne Hathaway), has also been seen in historical TV drama ‘Mary & George’ with Julianne Moore, and ‘Red White and Royal Blue.’

His big new role is leading Amazon’s new take on ‘Masters of the Universe,’ which is in production now and will be on screens on June 5th, 2026.

In addition to that, he’s part of the cast for mystery drama ‘Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie,’ which was also touted at Amazon’s recent CinemaCon presentation, the indie movie ‘100 Nights of Hero’ and has lent his voice to animated pic ‘Wings of Freedom.’

What else has Bill Skarsgård worked on?

Skarsgård, who has become something of a chameleon when it comes to roles, most recently put his skills on display in Robert EggersOscar-nominated ‘Nosferatu,’ which became Focus Features’ second highest-grossing film ever at the domestic box office following its Christmas Day debut.

Right now, the actor is starring opposite Anthony Hopkins in ‘Locked,’ the new thriller from director David Yarovesky.

And upcoming? He has ‘Dead Man’s Wire’ from Gus Van Sant, Michael Sarnoski’s ‘The Death of Robin Hood’ (which stars Hugh Jackman), and TV prequel ‘It: Welcome to Derry,’ for HBO/Max, where he reprises his breakout role as Pennywise the Clown.

There’s also historical drama ‘Emperor,’ Lee Tamahori’s movie about young Johanna “Of Ghent”, who seeks revenge on the holy Roman Emperor Charles V for the death of her father.

With Sophie Cookson as Johanna and Adrien Brody as the emperor, Skarsgård plays Philip II of Spain.

What else is Peter Berg developing?

Director Peter Berg. Photo: Daniel McFadden/Netflix.
Director Peter Berg. Photo: Daniel McFadden/Netflix.

Berg has recently worked on a documentary about music superstar Rihanna.

In addition to his own directorial gigs, Berg is a consistently busy producer, supporting other people’s work. He’s behind new TV series ‘Green Beret’s Guide to Surviving the Apocalypse’ and two movies.

‘The Beast’ stars Samuel L. Jackson and Joel Kinnaman in the story of the US President needing to rely on the defensive capabilities of his titular, tricked-out, secure main transport car when a militia of unidentified hostiles coordinates a coup against the U.S. That one has Renny Harlin in the director’s driving seat.

There’s also the in-development ‘Olympus,’ about a decorated soldier turned spy who finds out he is descended from the Greek Gods and could actually be humanity’s last hope. The movie appears to be in development limbo, but does feature a script from prolific TV creator Taylor Sheridan.

When will ‘Mosquito Bowl’ be on screens?

Netflix has yet to announce when the movie might hit its servers, but given that it has reached the casting stage, we’d be shocked if it wasn’t ready for release next year.

  • Will Smith Teases Development on ‘Hancock’ Sequel

    Preview:

    • Will Smith says moves are being made on a ‘Hancock’ sequel.
    • It would continue the story of the 2008 original.
    • Smith teases that Zendaya has been approached for a role.

Was the world truly anticipating a follow-up to 2008 superhero pic ‘Hancock’?

Yes, it starred Will Smith, Jason Bateman and Charlize Theron, and it made more than $629 million worldwide from a $150 million budget, but the reviews were far from positive and it didn’t exactly enter the public consciousness in the way that, say, fellow 2008 release ‘Iron Man’ helped launch a slightly successful cinematic universe.

And these days, the odds are even more stacked against it; star Smith rebuilding his career following the Oscar slap incident of three years ago (in his defense, he’s certainly seen success with the likes of ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’) and audiences in general have begun to tire of the endless parade of super-beings on screen, with even the latest Marvel releases –– aside from the blip that was ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ –– no longer putting up the giant box office of years past.

Still, that isn’t stopping famed hype man Smith from talking up the latest development on a sequel to the movie about an alcoholic superhero who causes more trouble than he helps.

As reported by Deadline, the actor appeared on Canadian influencer xQc’s live stream on Twitch and answered some fan questions.

    34545

Among them? One about the ongoing potential of a new outing for Hancock. Here’s what he said:

“There’s a really cool ‘Hancock 2’ idea. We haven’t even talked about it.”

But he wasn’t done. There was also the requisite Big Celebrity Name to drop:

“I’m going to give you one little piece. Zendaya is being approached for a role in ‘Hancock 2.’ ”

Whether or not that turns out to be fanciful thinking remains to be seen. Smith is still something of a force in Hollywood, but Zendaya is no slouch in the power department and doesn’t have to say yes to just any role.

Plus, it’s not as if she doesn’t already have a good superhero gig going thanks to her role as MJ in the lucrative ‘Spider-Man’ franchise, and she also has a busy schedule right now between new ‘Euphoria’ filming, Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ and the fourth Spidey instalment.

Right now, it sounds like Smith is more putting the name out into the world as a way to try and manifest her involvement.

What was the story of the 2008 movie?

The action-comedy stars Smith as John Hancock, a disheveled superhero with extraordinary powers but a troubled, reckless attitude. Despite his ability to fly and immense strength, Hancock is disliked by the public due to his destructive methods of saving lives, which often cause collateral damage.

The film takes a turn when Hancock saves the life of a public relations executive, Ray Embrey (Bateman), who offers to help improve Hancock’s image.

As they work together, Hancock’s past is revealed, including his connection to Ray’s wife, Mary (Theron), who harbors secrets of her own. The story explores themes of redemption, accountability, and the complexity of heroism.

In the climax, Hancock learns about his true origins and the nature of his powers, leading to a confrontation with bank robber Red Parker (Eddie Marsan).

The original script was written by Vy Vincent Ngo in 1996. It languished in development hell for years with various directors attached, including Tony Scott, Michael Mann (who would later co-produce the film), Jonathan Mostow and Gabriele Muccino.

Berg was the one to finally get it to screens, with a fresh script draft from ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Better Call Saul’ creator Vince Gilligan.

Smith described his title character as follows:

“Hancock is not your average superhero. Every day he wakes up mad at the world. He doesn’t remember what happened to him and there’s no one to help him find the answers.”

    Hancock: Comments on the Sequel

Talk of a ‘Hancock’ sequel has been floating around since the original movie’s release, with Berg excitedly announcing in 2009 that “everyone” –– presumably Smith, Bateman and Theron –– would want to return for the sequel.

Yet in 2012, with little sign of forward movement, he was putting the delay down to an issue of getting schedules in sync while talking to Comicbookmovie.com:

“We’ve been talking about the sequel between us, Will Smith, [producers] Michael Mann and Akiva Goldsman and myself. We’re all interested, but we literally just have trouble getting into the same room at the same time. We did have a series of meetings last year and started to hash out an idea for sequel — and Will Smith actually had the idea — so I think it will happen, it’s just a question of timing.”

Finally, Theron was asked about the possibility of showing up for the new movie, but seemed to still be interested when asked by ComicBook:

“You know, for a while we [talked about a sequel]. I think closer to when the movie came out, but not in recent years, no. We’ll be super heroes with our walkers, you know. And I’ll still go! I’ll still make that movie; I would do it in a heartbeat.”

When will the ‘Hancock’ sequel be in theaters?

Will Smith in 'Hancock'. Photo: Sony Pictures Releasing.

Hold on there, don’t get too excited. Despite his seeming road-to-rehabilitation image and remaining megastar influence, Will Smith saying a movie is back in the works does not mean it’ll actually get made.

And given the scheduling issues, we wouldn’t expect any completed movie much before 2027 at the earliest.

We’d guess Sony would be the ones to release it when it is finished, given that the original arrived via Columbia Pictures.

  • Samuel L. Jackson Starring in ‘The Beast’

Samuel L. Jackson at the red carpet premiere of Marvel Studios’ ‘Secret Invasion.’

Perhaps the most famous action thriller about a U.S. President getting tough with terrorists on one of his vehicles is 1997’s Wolfgang Peterson’s ‘Air Force One’, in which Harrison Ford plays James Marshall.

He’s none too pleased when Gary Oldman’s band of communist rebels take over the plane and hold his family and staff hostage on board, eventually growling one of the most famous lines of action movie dialogue.

Since then, there have been a few pretenders to the throne (Aaron Eckhart and Morgan Freeman have been Commanders in Chief in peril, but they both had Gerard Butler’s Secret Service tough guy to help out in the ‘..Has Fallen’ movies that launched with 2013’s ‘Olympus Has Fallen’.

And the same year as that movie, we got Jamie Foxx’s President and Channing Tatum’s cop protecting the former’s place of residence in ‘White House Down’.

Now, though, ‘The Beast’ promises to deliver Samuel L. Jackson kicking ass as a President, who has to utilize the many facilities of his limo.

The real-life limo used to transport the President is famously nicknamed ‘The Beast’ by the Secret Service agents who ride in and maintain it.

The impenetrable tank is stocked with grenades, shotguns, armor-plating and bullet-and-bomb-proofing.

When a militia of unidentified hostiles coordinates a coup against the U.S. presidency, the President (Jackson) uncovers the extent of The Beast’s highly classified offensive capabilities.

Separated from his wife, the President must learn to control The Beast — and the monster inside himself — in order to save his life, the life of Secret Service agent Taft (Joel Kinnaman), and America.

    Who is making ‘The Beast’?

This one is still in pre-production, and other casting has yet to be announced. But we do know that James Madigan, who has segued from a career in visual effects to second unit director on movies such as ‘The Meg’ and ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’, will direct this one from Umair Aleem’s script.

And Peter Berg, no stranger to action movies himself, will be one of the producers.

Since the film is not yet associated with a studio (it’ll be offered to distributors as a package deal at this year’s Toronto International Film Market), it has a waiver with performers’ union SAG-AFTRA to shoot this year.

Interestingly, it marks the second time Jackson has played the role, since he was the Leader of the Free World in 2014’s ‘Big Game’ in which a teenager helps him survive in a forest after baddies shoot down Air Force One. Could it be the same president? Probably not, but it would be fun to watch Jackson get frustrated about his ride being compromised again.

For Marvel fans, it’ll be a chance to see Jackson getting tough in a tricked-out vehicle again after Nick Fury took on some enemies in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’. Hopefully he won’t have to deal with a metal-armed, defrosted assassin this time…

‘Black Panther’ Star Winston Duke Joins Mark Wahlberg in ‘Wonderland’

    Matt Kennedy/Marvel Studios

Black Panther” breakout Winston Duke is having a very good week. After landing a key role in the upcoming action thriller “Heroine,” he’s just lined up another high-profile project: Starring opposite Mark Wahlberg in the crime drama “Wonderland.”

According to Variety, Duke has signed on for the Netflix film, which will mark the fifth collaboration between Wahlberg and director Peter Berg. It’s unclear who Duke will be playing in the flick, but he could be setting himself up for a many more movies: “Wonderland” is based on the Ace Atkins novel of the same name, and is part of the Spenser series, which was originated by the late mystery writer Robert B. Parker and currently consists of 48 novels.

Here’s the film’s official synopsis, per Variety:

The story follows Spenser who, fresh out of prison, is sucked back into Boston’s underbelly as he uncovers the truth about a sensational murder and the twisted conspiracy behind it.

After his “Black Panther” success, Duke has kept incredibly busy. Aside from all the work he’s lined up this week alone, he’s also set to appear as one of the leads in Jordan Peele’s hotly-anticipated “Get Out” follow-up, “Us,” which is due out early next year.

No word yet on a release date for “Wonderland.” Production is expected to begin sometime this fall.

  • 7 Reasons Why ‘The Rundown’ Is The Rock’s Best Movie

7 Reasons Why ‘The Rundown’ Is The Rock’s Best Movie

    Universal

Dwayne Johnson, the once and future The Rock, has proven that he can pretty much do anything at this point.

He’s battled skyscrapers and fault lines. He’s been “The Tooth FairyandThe Scorpion King.”  He’s portrayed a “Baywatch” lifeguard, played “Jumanji,” and voiced a singing Hawaiian demigod. But think back to 2003 when his film career was just kicking off. Fresh off his wrestling success and with only a few movies under his belt, Dwayne Johnson solidified his action hero status in a often-overlooked vehicle, “The Rundown.”

Even though he’s come a long way since then, the thrilling popcorn comedy is still a cinematic delight. Here are just a few reasons why.

    1. It’s got a classic buddy comedy set-up.

In the spirit of ’80s classics like “Midnight Run,” “The Rundown” is about “retrieval expert” Beck (Johnson) who sets out for the jungle for ONE LAST MISSION (aren’t they all?) to bring home a mobster’s son, Travis (Seann William Scott). The money earned from his final capture will allow him to quit the bounty hunting game and open up, naturally, a restaurant.

    Universal

    2. It Involves Treasure

Fact: Any movie with some sort of treasure plotline is mildly amusing. Travis is in the Amazon hoping to discover an ancient gold idol that is dubbed the Gato del Diablo. Obviously, this scenario causes trouble to ensue.

    3. Christopher Walken Plays the Bad Guy *Chef’s Kiss

    Universal

Honestly, how could this movie NOT be good.

Also, his character’s name is Cornelius Bernard Hatcher and he’s the evil operator of the HellDorado’s mining company.

    4. It’s Directed by Peter Berg

Peter Berg is a respected director and actor. He’s the man behind “Very Bad Things,” “Friday Night Lights,” and “Lone Survivor.” He directed the pilots of “The Leftovers” and NBC’s “Friday Night Lights.” Show some respect.

    5. There’s a Scene That Involves Horny Monkeys

    6. It has Legit Good Action Scenes

Even Arnold Schwarzenegger makes a cameo, guys.

    7. There Could Be a Killer Sequel (If We’re Lucky)

“We’ve been talking about it. You know, I wanted to do it with Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson. If I could get Jonah Hill, I’d do it tomorrow. If I could get Dwayne and Jonah Hill, I’d do it tomorrow,” Peter Berg told Collider in 2016. And in 2018, he revealed a few more sequel details that, well, just click here and see for yourself.

Box Office: ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Opens High, ‘Mile 22’ Low, ‘The Meg’ at $300M, ‘Mission’ at $500M

    Mile 22, Crazy Rich Asians
    STX Films/Warner Bros.

Say hi to your mother for Mark Wahlberg, but goodbye to the odds of Mile 22 launching a franchise.

Wahlberg is crazy rich in real life, but he’s hit a couple of rough patches at the box office in the past few years, including “Mile 22” taking third place in its opening weekend with $13.6 million.

Meanwhile, Crazy Rich Asians made $34.7 million over its five day opening, including $25.2 million at the August 17-19 weekend box office. That was reportedly above expectations, aka the tracking numbers that are so rarely right but they keep trying every week bless them.

“Crazy Rich Asians” is the first romantic comedy to open with more than $20 million since Trainwreck.” It’s certainly notThe Meg”  opening numbers, but in this superhero-action-thriller-sequel-obsessed world, it’s a big win.

    The Meg
    Warner Bros.

Speaking of “The Meg,” it took second place in its second weekend, picking up $21.1 million — which is about what it was expected to get LAST weekend, when it opened to more than double its predicted take.

Warner Bros. takes a lot of heat in this Marvel-lovin’ world, but between “The Meg” and “Crazy Rich Asians,” the studio is more than pulling its weight to keep the August box office afloat.

Director Jon M. Chu‘s “Crazy Rich Asians” (Cinemascore A) had a $30 million budget vs. Peter Berg‘s “Mile 22” (B-) estimated $35 million budget. Another year, the box office results might be flipped. Instead, Berg and Wahlberg’s fourth team-up was one of their lowest. The action thriller was hoped to launch a franchise — and maybe it still will, honestly, who knows — but that opening was even below the high teens estimates.

“Mile 22” also opened in 3,520 theaters vs. 3,384 for “Crazy Rich Asians.” They both played on several hundred fewer screens than “The Meg.” So the “Crazy Rich Asians” per-screen average was thousands of dollars higher than everyone else.

    Alpha
    Sony Pictures Entertainment

Fourth place was basically a tie between the other new movie of the week, Alpha,” and Mission: Impossible – Fallout.” “Alpha” picked up $10.5 million from about 2,700 screens. “Mission: Impossible 6” also made $10.5 million from more than 3,400 screens.

The rest of the top 10 belonged to “Christopher Robin,” “BlacKkKlansman,” “Slender Man (whyyyyyyyy), “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation,” and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.”

“The Meg” has been out for two weeks and already has $314 million worldwide, with $230 million coming from the foreign box office alone. Those international coins mean EVERYTHING. On that note, “Mission: Impossible 6,” which has been out for four weeks, has $501.4 million worldwide, with $320M alone from the foreign box office. Well deserved.

    What’s next?

The Happytime Murders and some other stuff are coming next week, but we’re most excited to RSVP for the Winona and Keanu reunion in Destination Wedding” on August 31.
