  • Steven Spielberg Believes Women Will Get ‘Several’ Best Director Oscar Nominations

'The Post' European Premiere - Red Carpet ArrivalsCome this year’s Oscars ceremony, Steven Spielberg doesn’t think the Best Director presenter will have to call out the “all-male nominees.”

Natalie Portman made headlines earlier this week when she introduced the Golden Globes directing category that way. But Spielberg believes that the Oscar nominations will include gender diversity.

“There’s also a watershed happening right now, slowly, maybe not fast enough, for women directors,” the three-time Oscar winner told “Entertainment Tonight” at the National Board of Review awards gala.

“I mean you have [“Wonder Woman” director] Patty Jenkins. We have some amazing women that have come forward, you know ‘Mudbound’ and ‘Lady Bird’,’” he added, referring to Dee Rees and Greta Gerwig.

“This is a pretty incredible year, and I think you’ll be seeing some nominations. I’m predicting at the Oscars this year for a woman director, if not several.”

As for Jenkins herself, she said Portman’s dig “made me laugh, and it made me smile. Look, it’s been a little glaring that women directors don’t get nominated so often and it is odd. Particularly when their films are being celebrated in every other way, so I thought it was interesting to highlight it.”

  • ‘Wonder Woman 2’ Director Patty Jenkins Promises ‘Entirely New Adventure’

When “Wonder Woman 2” hits theaters, we can all look forward to seeing something new.

Patty Jenkins, the director of both the upcoming sequel and its 2017 predecessor, is promising an “entirely new adventure.” She discussed the superhero flick with ET during the Palm Springs Film Festival on Tuesday and teased familiar elements but also a new journey.

“We’re actually making a totally different film with a lot of the same, similar like things that we love, but it’s its own movie completely, so it’s not ‘two’ to us,” Jenkins said. “It’s an entirely new adventure together that we couldn’t be luckier [to do].”

We’re optimistic about whatever Jenkins has planned. “Wonder Woman” is the best received film in the DCEU franchise so far, and the movie was the third highest-grossing film at the domestic box office in 2017. “Wonder Woman” even earned Rotten Tomatoes scores of 92 percent from critics and 88 percent from audiences.

Star Gal Gadot also has confidence in Jenkins. She recently chatted with EW about Warner Bros. Pictures’ decision to bring the director back with a huge paycheck and indicated that Jenkins is getting her due.

“The executives at Warner Bros. are smart and they showed her their appreciation,” she said. “No one tried to take anyone’s credit. It was clear she created an amazing movie and she should be paid for it.”

We expect they’ll see returns on their investment when “Wonder Woman 2” opens on Nov. 1, 2019.

  • ‘Wonder Woman 2’ Release Date Moved Up to November 2019

The upcoming “Wonder Woman” sequel will be flying into theaters earlier than anticipated: Warner Bros. has just announced that it’s moving up the flick’s release date.

Now, “Wonder Woman 2” will make its debut on November 1, 2019. It had previously been scheduled for release on December 13, 2019.

Though no official reason was given for the switcheroo, it’s likely that Warner Bros. didn’t want to compete with the release of “Star Wars: Episode IX,” which is eyeing a December 20, 2019 bow. “Episode IX” also recently experienced some schedule shuffling when original director Colin Trevorrow was replaced by “The Force Awakens” director J.J. Abrams, forcing the flick to refocus and swap a May 2019 release for its current slot.

What’s interesting about Warner Bros. making such a switch now, though, is whether titular star Gal Gadot will be there for it. Gadot has been in the headlines this week after reportedly pressuring the studio to cut ties with producer Brett Ratner, who’s been accused by multiple women of sexual harassment and assault. (Ratner has denied the claims.)

We have a feeling that Warner Bros. won’t want to replace Gadot after such an impressive debut for her character, and expect the situation to resolve itself soon. “Wonder Woman 2,” directed by the returning Patty Jenkins, is due in theaters on November 1, 2019.

  • ‘Wonder Woman’ Director Patty Jenkins ‘Extremely Distressed’ Over Brett Ratner Allegations

2017 Forbes Women's SummitWith allegations of sexual misconduct continuing to swirl in Hollywood, “Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins distanced herself from film producer and financier Brett Ratner.

A Nov. 1 Los Angeles Times article revealed new accusations against Ratner (he has denied the allegations), and Jenkins was quick to issue a statement, as she had presented an award to just days before. The director had stepped in for Gal Gadot to hand over the Tree of Life Award to Ratner at the Jewish National Fund’s Oct. 29 dinner. The event honored members of Hollywood for philanthropic work in Israel. During Jenkins’s speech, she shared that Ratner had funded her thesis, something Steven Spielberg had once done for him.

In her statement Wednesday, Jenkins clarified that her Oct. 29 speech had described only her own experience with Ratner and that she had never seen or been aware of any misconduct. She made it clear she was “extremely distressed” by the “terrible allegations.”

“When I spoke of Brett, I spoke of my own experiences of him, which were not these at all,” she wrote in part. “I have never witnessed nor been aware of anything that is now being described. To be very clear, I am definitely not okay with this kind of behavior.”

Jenkins has become a leader in Hollywood after the wild success of “Wonder Woman,” and the movie’s outstanding box office performance has been hailed as a feminist victory. On top of that, she held out for a major deal for the film’s sequel, which will make her the highest-paid female film director ever. She joins numerous other heavy hitters in speaking out against those accused of sexual misconduct.

  • It’s Official: Patty Jenkins Will Return to Direct ‘Wonder Woman 2’

AFI Life Achievement Award Gala Tribute To Diane Keaton - ArrivalsWhen Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) returns to the big screen in her next standalone feature, she’ll have the same wonderful woman sitting in the director’s chair: Patty Jenkins has just officially signed on to helm “Wonder Woman 2.”

Variety reports that Jenkins recently closed her deal to return for the sequel, which is due in theaters in 2019. No financial terms were disclosed, but previous reports indicated that the director was holding out for a big payday — enough to make her the highest-paid female director ever (Variety puts that number at about $8 million, plus a “substantial” deal that will give her a cut of the flick’s future box office proceeds). It looks like Jenkins was successful in her quest.

The director is more than deserving of a lucrative contract, considering the global critical and commercial success of “Wonder Woman,” which soared to an international haul of more than $800 million. It’s now the highest-grossing flick, domestically, of Warner Bros.’s recent batch of DCEU films, beating out “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”

While her involvement in the flick has only just been made official, Jenkins has already been hard at work on the follow-up’s script, which she’s co-writing with DCEU mastermind Geoff Johns. She previously revealed that “Wonder Woman 2” will see the titular heroine finally journey to America.

“Wonder Woman 2” is currently slated for release on December 13, 2019.

  • Patty Jenkins Close to Record-Breaking Deal to Direct ‘Wonder Woman 2’

Patty Jenkins is returning to direct “Wonder Woman 2” and is on the verge of becoming the highest-paid female director ever.

After overseeing the smash hit “Wonder Woman,” which has grossed $800 million worldwide, Jenkins seemed a lock to take on the sequel. But at Comic-Con last month, while Warner Bros. announced the sequel, its release date (Dec. 13, 2019), and star Gal Gadot’s return, the studio did not announce Jenkins’ return.

Now, Deadline reports that the Warner Bros. is thisclose to finalizing a deal with Jenkins. Apparently, Jenkins was holding out for a bigger payday, “substantially more and the same as a male director would receive after such a box office coup.” That would make her the highest-paid female director in Hollywood.

Jenkins likely had a fairly low salary on the first movie, since her previous credit was 2003’s “Monster,” a small indie movie (though it did garner a Best Actress Oscar win for Charlize Theron). But the runaway success of “Wonder Woman,” not just commercially but critically, has now launched Jenkins into the director stratosphere.

And she already has ideas on where the sequel can go. “The story will take place in the U.S., which I think is right,” Jenkins told Entertainment Weekly. “She’s Wonder Woman. She’s got to come to America. It’s time.”

  • Director Patty Jenkins Not Signed For ‘Wonder Woman 2,’ Which Needs to Change Now

Premiere Of Warner Bros. Pictures' 'Wonder Woman'Most talent involved with superhero movies are locked down in multi-picture deals that could take place over years (maybe even decades). And yet, director Patty Jenkins is not signed up for a sequel to “Wonder Woman,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

That there will be a sequel is a no-brainer, considering the movie’s boffo box office over opening weekend. And star Gal Gadot has one of those multi-picture deals (she also appeared in “Batman v Superman” and will be in “Justice League,” plus whatever “Wonder Woman” sequels may come).

THR notes that a one-movie deal is standard practice at Warner Bros. for untested directors of big-budget movies. Jenkins had only helmed one movie previous to “Wonder Woman,” and that was the 2003 indie “Monster.”

Now that she’s proven capable of directing a movie that opened to $103.3 million, Jenkins should be able to command a pretty penny for the sequel. THR reports that negotiations should begin soon, and that Jenkins could leverage the movie’s success to work on other DC-verse projects as well. And when she does sign a deal, Jenkins already has a good idea for where to set the sequel.

  • ‘Wonder Woman’ Director Patty Jenkin Wants to Set Sequel Here

With the rousing commercial and critical success of “Wonder Woman,” a sequel seems inevitable. And if director Patty Jenkins is behind the camera again for it, she already knows where she wants to set “Wonder Woman 2.”

“The story will take place in the U.S., which I think is right,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “She’s Wonder Woman. She’s got to come to America. It’s time.”

Diana Prince in America for the swinging ’60s? Or the disco ’70s? Or any era, really — count us in.

Jenkins is game for a sequel, if Warner Bros. wants to hire her again (which it should). The director felt a good rapport with the crew and cast, including star Gal Gadot.

“I made ‘Wonder Woman.’ Now I want to make ‘Wonder Woman 2,’” she said. “It’s a beautiful story to tell, an important time to tell it and with people that I love.”

For now, Wonder Woman aka Diana Prince will appear in the upcoming “Justice League” movie.

  • Meet Patty Jenkins, the History-Making Director of Wonder Woman

In creating a complicated and compelling superhero, “Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins knew she had to strike a delicate balance.

“The worst thing that can happen to Wonder Woman is for her to become lesser in some way, for her to become angrier or more aggressive or too hostile or too loving and soft,” says Jenkins. “Those were the women that I have known, that have inspired me — on the one hand be fierce and strong and other hand be very loving and maternal.”

And, Jenkins tells Made in Hollywood reporter Julie Harkness Arnold, she wanted Wonder Woman to change over the course of the movie: “I really wanted her to blossom in that full way.”

Luckily, Jenkins had the perfect actress to carry that out.

Gal Gadot happens to be that person in real life,” Jenkins says. “So she had no problem bringing all of that beautiful dimension to it. And we loved that. She is a wonderful woman.”

The same can be said about Jenkins. Enjoying glowing reviews, the DC action film debuted with more than $100 million at the domestic box office, the biggest opening ever for a female director, topping the $93 million opening weekend for director Sam Taylor-Johnson’s “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

For Jenkins, the top priority has always been about getting the movie right.

“I knew how wrong you could go if you didn’t nail a tone that bridged so much: war, period, fantasy, superhero,” she says. “It was a daunting task, but I had a great crew and artists working with me. We took that very seriously.”

So what was the smoothest part of making a blockbuster?

“Working with the actors,” she says of her cast which also included Chris Pine, Robin Wright and Connie Nielsen. “It was a joy. It was a conversation that came very naturally. Their performances were wonderful. We definitely had some hard scenes. But it was a delightful partnership.”

  • New ‘Wonder Woman’ Photo Teases ‘Dark’ World War I Setting

Next year’s “Wonder Woman” standalone film will give DC fans a chance to learn more about the mysterious hero played by Gal Gadot, and will also thrust audiences into a dark, real-life setting: World War I. A new image from the flick teases that grim feel, and how Wonder Woman will approach such a brutal conflict.

The photo, which debuted in the new issue of Empire magazine, features our heroine running through some debris, with what looks like an explosion going off (or having recently been set off) nearby. There’s rubble, smoke, and twisted, broken trees everywhere, but Wonder Woman looks as badass as ever, racing through it all with a determined look on her face. Would we expect anything less from her?

wonder woman, gal gadot, new photo, world war i

As director Patty Jenkins explains to Empire, Wonder Woman’s unwavering moral code will be an integral part of the flick, as the character grapples with understanding the motivations behind humans waging war on each other in such a brutal fashion.

“My approach was to focus on telling the story of mechanised war and how that would look to a god visiting our world for the first time,” Jenkins told Empire. “I wanted the audience to understand the horrors that a war on this scale makes possible and how shocking that would be to someone who comes with a strong sense of honour and justice. She doesn’t realise yet just how senselessly dark the world can be.”

Sounds like intriguing stuff. Fans will have a chance to see how it all plays out when “Wonder Woman” hits theaters on June 2, 2017.
