  • Final ‘Aquaman’ Trailer Dives Deep into Arthur’s Training

Final ‘Aquaman’ Trailer Dives Deep into Arthur’s Training

    Warner Bros.

The final trailer for “Aquaman” has arrived, packed to the gills with bonus footage of Arthur Curry’s (Jason Momoa) home kingdom, as well as a deeper look at the how the titular half-human, half-Atlantean trains to become the king — and hero — that Atlantis needs.

In the clip, we see a young Arthur begin his training with Vulko (Willem Defoe), including learning how to properly swim, fight, and catch flying objects (this last one looks more impressive than it sounds, particularly when said object is a lightning-fast trident). That will all come in handy, since there’s a major war brewing between the surface and the sea, led by Arthur’s half-brother, King Orm (Patrick Wilson).

If you’re eager to see more of that much-discussed underwater footage that made production so difficult, there’s plenty to ogle in this trailer. The visual effects are truly dazzling, especially when the camera zooms through Atlantis right along with all of those weaponized sea creatures.

There’s also an adorable scene where Aquaman’s mother, Queen Atlanna (Nicole Kidman), uses a teddy bear and tiny fork to illustrate for a baby Arthur what his future holds. If that’s not a selling point, we don’t know what is.

“Aquaman” swims into theaters on December 21. Find out how to see it early here.

  • ‘Annabelle 3’ to Feature ‘The Conjuring’ Stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga

‘Annabelle 3’ to Feature ‘The Conjuring’ Stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga

    Warner Bros.

At long last, the Warrens are crossing over into the “Annabelle” series.

Deadline reports that “The Conjuring” stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga— who play paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren in the horror flicks — have officially signed on to appear in “Annabelle 3.” It’s the first time the characters will appear in the film series about the possessed doll, which itself is a spinoff of the “Conjuring” movies.

According to Deadline, the Warrens will only be appearing in supporting roles in the film. No other details about their involvement were released. The third “Annabelle” flick — which doesn’t have an official title yet — is set to revolve at least in part around the Warrens’ young daughter, who will be played by “Gifted” star Mckenna Grace.

Here’s the threequel’s synopsis, per Deadline:

‘Annabelle 3,’ the sixth title in ‘The Conjuring’ franchise, picks up with the Warrens bringing the Annabelle doll to a place where she can no longer wreak havoc: their Artifacts Room. Annabelle awakens the room’s evil which sets its sights on a new target: the Warrens’ ten year old daughter Judy. The young girl along with her babysitter (Judy’s teenage cousin) and cousin’s friend square off against the evil doll.

“Annabelle 3” took over the release date slot that was previously held by “The Conjuring 3.” There’s still no word on when that latter flick will be coming out (production may begin next year), but at least fans will be able to catch up with the Warrens next summer after all.

Look for Ed and Lorraine and “Annabelle 3” in theaters on July 3, 2019.

  • ‘The Conjuring 3’ Finds Director, and It’s Not James Wan

‘The Conjuring 3’ Finds Director, and It’s Not James Wan

    The Conjuring
    Warner Bros.

The Conjuring Universe scared away James Wan! Not really, though. He is out as director after “The Conjuring” and “The Conjuring 2.” However, he’s still on board as a producer and “godfather” of the third film.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Michael Chaves will direct “The Conjuring 3.” Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga will return as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.

Chaves got his start when Wan and company discovered Chaves’ award-winning short “The Maiden.” That led him to his directorial debut, “The Curse of La Llorona,” which will be released in theaters April 19, 2019.

Wan shared a statement with THR on Chaves joining The Conjuring Universe:

“While working closely with Chaves on ‘The Curse of La Llorona,’ I got to know him as a filmmaker. Chaves’ ability to bring emotion to a story, and his understanding of mood and scares, make him a perfect fit to direct the next Conjuring film. […] I’m excited to be back as producer and continue with Vera and Patrick on the next supernatural adventure of the Warrens.”

    Here’s a statement from Chaves:

“I am a huge fan of the Conjuring films. The movies are the rare combination that delivers both tremendous heart and awesome scares. It is both a total thrill and absolute honor to be working with James and the gang at New Line again.”

Producer Peter Safran recently told CinemaBlend that progress on “The Conjuring 3” was “actually coming along great. David Lindsay Johnson is working on the screenplay, and I feel pretty confident they will have that one up and running next year.”

We were warned in June 2017 that “The Conjuring 3” would be happening … but most likely without James Wan as director. Wan is currently putting the finishing touches on DC’s “Aquaman,” which hits theaters in December. He’s also busy producing several films, including The Conjuring Universe’s “Annabelle 3,” which will open July 3, 2019.

“The Conjuring 3” doesn’t have an official release date, but it could be coming in September 2020.

  • First ‘Aquaman’ Trailer Washes Ashore

    First ‘Aquaman’ Trailer Washes Ashore

    Warner Bros/DC

Even though the character has appeared in two DC Extended Universe entries, whether or not Aquaman could carry an entire movie has been one of the biggest questions hanging over the entire interconnected series. Well, today during the Warner Bros panel at San Diego Comic Con, we finally got our first look at “Aquaman,” the stand-alone film hitting theaters this holiday season. And it is not at all what you were probably expecting.

This trailer is positively epic, with sea creatures, underwater civilizations, and some kind of breakthrough technology that makes actors’ hair look all wavy and underwater-y. Jason Momoa returns once again to play Arthur Curry aka Aquaman, who this time has to defuse a potential underwater civil war. This thing looks huge, like a combination of “Gladiator” and “Avatar,” with genuine visionary James Wan orchestrating the whole thing brilliantly. The star-studded cast includes Willem Dafoe, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren (!), and Nicole Kidman. If “Aquaman” wasn’t on your radar (sonar?) before, chances are it is now.

“Aquaman” splashes into theaters on December 21st.

    Sharknado 7: Atlantis vs. Xebel!

DC’s “Aquaman” is on the new cover of Entertainment Weekly, and EW recently shared a bunch of new photos, including the first look at Black Manta.

Today, EW posted our first look underwater at the armies of Atlantis’ King Orm (Patrick Wilson) and Xebel’s King Nereus (Dolph Lundgren) facing off at The Council of the Kings.

The Atlantean army is on the right, riding great white sharks into battle, with the warriors of Xebel riding sea dragons.

  • Best TV Shows to Watch If You’re a Crime Drama Junkie

As a crime drama junkie, you already have a handle on the food pyramid of hearty, nutritiously litigious crime TV: “Criminal Minds” is your dependable grains group, the whole dysfunctional “CSI” family has your fruits covered, and “True Detective” is like a crunchy, dense helping of veggies.

OK, don’t think too much about that analogy. The point is, crime show devotees such as yourself have your bases covered — you’re on that case like Veronica Mars after a double espresso. But like any good detective, you’re also voracious and thorough. No need to bust out the fingerprint dust, though, ’cause we’ve got your back with some outside-the-box crime TV you might be missing out on.

    ‘Fargo’ (2014 – )

If you’re obsessed with crime, chances are you already love the Coen brothers. And that’s the start of why you should watch “Fargo,” but not the end of it.

The Coens’ legacy gives “Fargo” its homely, off-kilter, and dryly hilarious flavor, but the show’s in-sync ensemble — from Patrick Wilson to Kirsten Dunst — and its smartly written, labyrinthine plots help it stand apart. It’s a reflection of a unique and time-tested style that’s not afraid to do its own thing. It’s also not afraid to kill off characters, so consider yourself warned.

    ‘The Bridge’ (2013 – 2014)

Crime TV has a recipe, and that recipe is usually seasoned with a big ol’ ensemble and a killer-of-the-week plot. Not so with “The Bridge,” a show so good they had to make it twice (once in Denmark and Sweden and once in the States). This one’s all about intense focus; the intricate story relies on the crazy-good hook of a dead body found exactly on the border of two countries and all the dramatic red tape and frustration that ensue. Performance-wise, it’s laser-focused on Diane Kruger‘s knockout work as Detective Sonya Cross.

    ‘Luther’ (2010 – )

The austerity and smarts synonymous with the BBC. Luther” in a hard-boiled nutshell, and that’s why you should watch it right now.

    ‘Daredevil’ (2015 – )

Don’t go away — you didn’t accidentally click on a list about superhero shows. Yes, it’s true that you can’t throw a Batarang without hitting a comic book vigilante these days, but underneath the spandex, Marvel’s “Daredevil” is a surprisingly solid procedural with beautiful cinematography, some of the best fight choreography you’ve seen in years, and an electric cast.

Matt Murdock might be a blind ninja prodigy, but he’s also an ace lawyer with a heart of gold and a plucky crew of misfits in Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson, and among all the criminal beat-downs, you get your fill of detective work and uber-dramatic court trials. Oh, and if you root for the bad guys, Vincent D’Onofrio‘s Wilson “the Kingpin” Fisk and Jon Bernthal‘s Frank “the Punisher” Castle are guaranteed to make you feel good for being bad.

    ‘The X-Files’ (1993 – )

Hear us out on this one because we’re about to step even further outside the box. Like, so far outside the box that there might be some little green men and yetis and stuff.

“The X-Files” is a crime show. There, we said it. From its original nine seasons to its 2016 Fox follow-up, Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny have not only been the most dynamic — and sexiest — duo in the FBI, but they’ve set out to solve crimes every week. It just so happens that the perps sometimes turn out to be ghosts or space assassins or gender-morphing alien cults from other dimensions. That aside, you’ve still got your “I-don’t-play-by-the-rules” agent paired with a by-the-book peer, the rugged chief with a heart of gold, the shadowy informants, the twisted conspiracies, and all the other crime TV tropes you can shake a government-issued Glock 19 at.

Give Mulder and Scully a single season of your time, and you won’t just want to believe — you will believe.

  • ‘The Conjuring 2’ Trailer: Welcome to England’s Amityville!

“After everything we’ve seen, there isn’t much that rattles either of us anymore,” Lorraine Warren () says toward the start of the new “Conjuring 2” trailer. “But this one? This one still haunts me.”

This one is the story of “England’s Amityville,” following a family in North London dealing with a possessed little girl who apparently goes full Linda Blair in a seriously haunted house. In the trailer, Lorraine tells her husband Ed () that she had a premonition of his death, saying the family is just a pawn and “something inhuman wants to kill you.” Thanks for the tip!

This is all happening around Christmas, which is a particularly scary time for crosses to turn themselves upside-down on the wall. While a haunting version of “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” plays, we see these words on screen: “Discover the truth behind the event that shocked the world.”

Here’s Warner Bros.’s synopsis for the film, from horror maestro :

“The supernatural thriller brings to the screen another real case from the files of renowned demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren. Reprising their roles, Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson star as Lorraine and Ed Warren, who, in one of their most terrifying paranormal investigations, travel to north London to help a single mother raising four children alone in a house plagued by malicious spirits.”

  • Patrick Wilson Learns Politics and Sex Don’t Mix in ‘Zipper’ Trailer

ZipperYou’d think politicians would’ve learned by now to keep their pants on. And yet, in this new “Zipper” trailer, Patrick Wilson’s political career starts to come undone because he can’t do that.

Wilson’s Sam Ellis is a prosecutor running for office who has it all — gorgeous wife (Lena Headey), cute kids, and a bright future in politics. Except he’s got a “zipper problem,” as his advisor (Richard Dreyfuss) dubs it.

    Watch the trailer.

Wilson is perfectly cast as a charming, good-looking, seemingly good guy who’s got the clean-cut image that campaign managers drool over. But then he gets involved with high-class escorts, and his dreams threaten to go down the drain. Headey also looks to give a great performance as his ambitious wife, who won’t let him ruin his chances without a fight.

“Zipper” hits theaters and On Demand August 28.

  • The World Is Out of Balance in ‘Fargo’ Season 2 Trailer

Fargo season 2Do yourself a favor and lock the door — because “Fargo” season 2 is just around the corner.

FX released the first teaser trailer for the drama, and it looks as foreboding and dark as the terrific first season was. This time, the ’70s is as much of a character as Patrick Wilson, Kirsten Dunst, and Ted Danson. We’re sure to see plenty of crazy hairstyles and hear some awful slang.

    Watch the trailer.

Season 2 is set in 1979 and focuses on the mysterious investigation in Sioux Falls that was repeatedly referenced in the first season. Here’s the official synopsis from FX:

The all new “true crime” case of Fargo’s new chapter travels back to 1979 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Luverne, Minnesota, where a young State Police Officer “Lou Solverson” (Patrick Wilson), recently back from Vietnam, investigates a case involving a local crime gang and a major Mob syndicate. Helping him piece things together is his father-in-law, “Sheriff Hank Larsson” (Ted Danson). The investigation will lead them to a colorful cast of characters that includes “Karl Weathers” (Nick Offerman), the town lawyer of Luverne, Minnesota. A Korean War vet, Karl is a flowery drunk blessed with the gift of gab and the eloquence of a true con artist.

Three-time Emmy winner Brad Garrett will play “Joe Bulo,” the front man for the northern expansion of a Kansas City crime syndicate. The new face of corporate crime, Joe’s bringing a Walmart mentality to small town America. His number two is “Mike Milligan” (Bokeem Woodbine). Part enforcer, part detective, Mike is always smiling – but the joke is usually on you. Bulo and his crew have their sights set on the Gerhardt crime family in Fargo, currently led by matriarch “Floyd Gerhardt” (Jean Smart).

With her husband at death’s door, Floyd takes over the family business, frustrating her eldest son, “Dodd Gerhardt” (Jeffrey Donovan). An impatient hothead with a cruel streak to match his ambitions, Dodd can’t wait for both his parents to die so he can take over and expand their business from kingdom to empire. “Bear Gerhardt” (Angus Sampson) is the middle son, an intimidatingly large man who, although inarticulate, is the most decent of his clan. “Rye Gerhardt” (Kieran Culkin), the youngest of the Gerhardt clan, views himself as a big shot, but in reality he’s just a small dog who barks big.

“Fargo” season 2 premieres this September.

  • Ronald Reagan Is a Character in ‘Fargo’ Season 2

There have been a lot of questions regarding the second season of FX’s beloved, Golden Globe-winning “Fargo,” which capped off whirlwind first season in pretty definitive fashion. Initially series creator Noah Hawley (working from the equally revered Coen Brothers movie of the same name) said that the second season would go into the past, to a story recounted in the first season by Lou Solverson (Keith Carradine, to be played by Patrick Wilson in this new season), about some criminal activity he investigated following his return from Vietnam. After the TCA winter press tour, FX CEO John Langraf shared some additional details with Entertainment Weekly.

“It covers something that was referenced in the first installment by Lou Solverson, Molly Solverson’s [Allison Tolman] father,” Langraf told EW. “It’s a big sprawling, in some ways, more comedic [season], though at times, a very serious show. It’s set in the late ’70s against the backdrop of Ronald Reagan’s first campaign for President of the United States. Reagan is a character in it.” Later, he confided to EW that “Reagan will be interacting with our characters,” although the role has yet to be cast.

The rest of the cast has been rounded out, though, with, according to the site: ” Ted Danson as Hank Larsson, Lou’s unflappable father-in-law; Nick Offerman as Karl Weathers, a local lawyer; Jean Smart as Floyd Gerhardt, the matriarch of the Gerhardt crime family; Jeffrey Donovan as her eldest son, Dodd Gerhardt; Angus Sampson as her inarticulate middle son, Bear Gerhardt; Kieran Culkin as her youngest son, Rye Gerhardt; and Kirsten Dunst as small town beautician Peggy Blomquist, and her husband Ed (Jesse Plemons), who attempts to be supportive of his wife’s self-discovery, even if he doesn’t quite understand it.”

The 10-episode miniseries starts production today, with episodes beginning to air this fall on FX. We cannot wait.
