  • Ryan Reynolds Wanted Nic Cage’s Ghost Rider in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

    • Ryan Reynolds reached out to Nic Cage about a Ghost Rider cameo in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’.
    • The star/writer says they talked, but nothing came of it.
    • In other ‘Deadpool’ cameo news, Channing Tatum is still hopeful his will inspire a ‘Gambit’ movie.

Though ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is filled with a whole host of cameos from characters across the Marvel universe –– Chris Evans’ Johnny Storm, Jennifer Garner’s Elektra and Wesley Snipes’ Blade to name just a few of those who show up –– star/co-writer Ryan Reynolds still wanted more.

And now, talking to Collider, he’s opening up about one that got away: Nicolas Cage. The actor played Johnny Blaze, AKA Ghost Rider, the stunt driver-turned-demonic vigilante in two Marvel movies produced by Sony, the 2007 original, simply called ‘Ghost Rider’ and 2011 follow-up ‘Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance’.

    10047254

Neither exactly wowed the crowds, but he’d surely have been another perfect nod to Marvel movies gone by. Not to mention how much fun Reynolds’ Wade Wilson could have had at the expense of the flaming-skulled warrior. Sadly, it was not to be.

What happened with Nic Cage and the Ghost Rider cameo?

As Reynolds admits, the idea for Cage to return as Blaze got as far as them discussing it.

Here’s what Reynolds said about it:

“Yes. Came to a conversation for sure. Yeah, but no.”

So there you have it. No Cage for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ Which feels like a missed opportunity, but you can imagine Cage having doubts about digging into that particular chunk of his cinematic past, no matter how much he seemingly enjoyed playing Johnny Blaze. And how willing he has been to poke fun at himself in the past, particularly via 2022’s ‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’. Cage’s AI-fueled appearance as Superman in ‘The Flash‘ may have also left a bad taste in his mouth regarding reprising his role in cameo in another legacy superhero movie.

Who else didn’t make it in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’?

Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier in 'X2'.

It wasn’t just Cage who didn’t end up in the movie. According to ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’s co-writer and director, Shawn Levy, the character of Professor Charles Xavier, played on screen by Patrick Stewart and later James McAvoy was never seriously considered.

This is what Levy told the Happy Sad Confused podcast:

“Never even discussed. He was studied. Studied by Emma Corrin big time because the Cassandra sibling-hood to Professor X is really interesting to us. But no, never discussed. Never, never considered.”

Yes, Xavier is indeed the brother of Emma Corrin’s powerful mutant Cassandra Nova, who is the film’s chief antagonist. But it appears there were never plans for either Stewart (who reprised the Xavier role in a cameo for ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘) or McAvoy to show up, even given the Stewart version’s warm connection to Jackman’s Wolverine.

Still, both Stewart and McAvoy feature in the clip montage that provides an epilogue to the 20th Century Fox Marvel movie universe playing during part of the end credits.

What has Channing Tatum said about a Gambit movie?

One person who most definitely shows up as a cameo is Channing Tatum, finally getting the chance to play fellow mutant Gambit, after his character’s movie was lost in development limbo when Disney bought Fox.

Talking at the premiere for new thriller ‘Blink Twice’, he expressed hope he might one day still get a stand-alone movie.

    Here’s what Tatum told Variety:

“I sure hope so. From your mouth to God’s ears. Write it into existence, Please. I’ve been saying I want it for the last 10 years. It’s in Bob Iger and Kevin Feige’s hands. I pray to God.”

Maybe he should be praying to Marvel Jesus instead?

What’s happening with ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’?

The superhero buddy comedy continues to soar at the box office and is expected to win the weekend once more on its way across the $1 billion mark.

    • Sam Claflin and Patrick Stewart are attached to comic book adaptation ‘Barbaric’.
    • Writer Sheldon Turner is crafting a series based on his work.
    • Michael Bay’s in talks to direct at least a couple of episodes.

We might not exactly be hurting for fantasy TV series at the moment –– ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel ‘House of the Dragon’ recently returned and Prime Video’s ‘Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ is back next month.

Still, ‘Up in the Air’ writer Sheldon Turner thinks there could well be room for one more, especially one that features a less serious side to its tale of warriors and gonzo violence.

Which brings us to ‘Barbaric’ the best-selling Vault comic he first published in 2021 with co-creator/writer Michael Moreci and co-creator/artist Nathan Gooden.

Turner is looking to turn the comic into a TV series, and he has ‘Daisy Jones & the Six’s Sam Claflin ready to star with Patrick Stewart –– whose genre credentials surely need no repetition –– taking a voice role.

Set in a Medieval fantasy world, the series follows Owen (Claflin), a barbarian who has been cursed to do good with what remains of his life. Accompanied by his talking axe (Stewart), described in the comic’s synopsis as a moral compass with a drinking problem, Owen wanders the realm, foredoomed to help any who seek assistance. But there is one thing Owen hates more than a life with rules: witches.

Netflix –– though the company wouldn’t officially comment to TVLine, likely because not all the deals have been done –– is reportedly backing this one, which Turner will write and produce via his 100% Productions company, which is based at A+E Studios.

But perhaps the biggest news on this one is the potential director. Michael Bay –– yes, the man behind the likes of the ‘Transformers’ movies, ‘Armageddon’ and, most recently, ‘Ambulance’ (in whose credits Turner is thanked, leading us to think he might have offered some uncredited script re-write work) is in talks to handle the series.

If he does sign, it would mark Bay’s TV directorial debut. He’s certainly produced a lot of small screen work (‘Black Sails’, ‘The Purge’ and ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’ among it), but now we might get to see what he can do with a show. We’d guess the idea of working with a Netflix budget rather than the constrictions of regular network TV is what appeals to him.

And we’d certainly be interested in what Bay’s style looks like within a fantasy world.

When will ‘Barbaric’ be on screens?

The new series will have to make it out of development before it can even be considered for a launch date. But given the names involved, we’d guess this has a better chance than some other projects.

    • Jones originated the role of the longtime X-Men nemesis in 2006’s ‘X-Men: The Last Stand.’
    • ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as the title mutants, is expected to feature a slew of Marvel cameos.

British actor Vinnie Jones says he turned down the opportunity to reprise the role of Cain Marko, aka the Juggernaut, for the upcoming Marvel Studios film ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’

Jones played the role in 2006’s ‘X-Men: The Last Stand,’ where the character – who was not originally a mutant in the comics – was refashioned as a physically powerful mutant who can build up enough momentum as he runs to literally crash through anything, including walls.

    Why Jones Won’t Return

With ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ expected to feature characters drawn from both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Fox’s now-defunct ‘X-Men’ film series, Jones told Yahoo! UK that he was offered the chance to return as Marko in the third ‘Deadpool’ film by director Shawn Levy.

“Funnily enough I just got asked to do ‘Deadpool,’ the new one now, and I spoke to the director and I just said it’s such a drama putting that suit on mentally and physically. I mean it had its mental toll as well because you’re in it and you can’t do anything all day, you can only drink through a straw. So we couldn’t strike the deal for ‘Deadpool [& Wolverine].’”

Jones added that the first ‘Deadpool’ is his “favorite movie of all f***ing time more or less, ” but that in the end the new movie “didn’t have the budget to put me in the suit.” (A wholly CG version of the Juggernaut made a brief appearance in 2019’s ‘Deadpool 2.’)

The actor also revealed that he wasn’t happy with the experience of filming the troubled, divisive ‘The Last Stand.’ After original director Matthew Vaughn was replaced by Brett Ratner, Jones claims that his role was drastically reduced in favor of other characters: “I was very upset, really, because it was … such a big stage and [I] became an extra, that’s what happened.”

Although the plot of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is being kept under wraps, as usual for Marvel, the film will follow the Merc with a Mouth (Ryan Reynolds) as he is captured by the Time Variance Authority and must journey through the multiverse to save the Marvel Cinematic Universe itself.

The movie will mark the first appearance of Deadpool and Wolverine under the MCU banner, with Hugh Jackman reprising the latter role for the first time since 2017’s ‘Logan.’

Some of the other characters appearing or rumored to appear in the new film include Sabretooth (played by Tyler Mane from the first ‘X-Men’ movie), Elektra (reprised by Jennifer Garner from the original ‘Daredevil’ as well as her own standalone effort), Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, Patrick Stewart’s Professor Xavier, and more.

  • New Trailer for ‘Star Trek: Picard’ Season 3

While fan reaction to Season 2 of ‘Star Trek: Picard’ was somewhat mixed––some enjoyed the time-travel adventures, others found the storyline meandering and unfocused––Season 3 promises to deliver more nostalgic thrills for those who spent their years watching ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’.

Star Trek: Picard’, which features Patrick Stewart as the venerable former Captain (now Admiral) Picard as he deals with new adventures and threats past, present and future, has not been shy in keeping connective tissue with the 1980s and 1990s series, even as it charts its own course.

Former ‘TNG’ stars Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis guest-starred in Season 1 as Will Riker and Deanna Troi, while Brent Spiner’s Data (and other characters brought to life by the actor) formed a key part of the storyline for that season.

Jonathan Frakes as Riker and Patrick Stewart as Picard on the Paramount+ original series 'Star Trek: Picard.'

Last year, though, we learned that more of that show’s cast will be back to see their old commander.

Frakes, Sirtis and Spiner will all return, joined this time by LeVar Burton’s Geordi LaForge (former Chief Engineer of Picard’s Enterprise), Gates McFadden’s Dr. Beverly Crusher (who had an established connection to Picard before serving on the ship) and Michael Dorn’s Worf (a Klingon raised by humans who was Chief of Security on board for years).

And it’s not just the ‘Next Generation’ crew who will be showing up: we can also expect a return from sentient holographic character Moriarty (the Sherlock Holmes villain who matched wits with Picard and a Holmes-curious Data on the series), played by Daniel Davis.

Outside of the returning actors, the new trailer also confirms the casting of Ed Speleers, who plays someone traveling with Crusher, who has a key role in the new season when they’re targeted by a new alien menace.

Amanda Plummer as Vadic on the Paramount+ original series 'Star Trek: Picard.'
(Center) Amanda Plummer as Vadic on the Paramount+ original series ‘Star Trek: Picard.’ Photo: Trae Patton/Paramount+.

The biggest threat this time comes from Captain Vadic (Amanda Plummer), who appears to also have a personal grudge against Picard. And when the venerable Admiral answers a distress call from Beverly, he ends up on the USS Titan, formerly Will Riker’s ship. It’s currently under the command of a Captain played by Todd Stashwick, with Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) as his First Officer.

Returning from the regular ‘Picard’ cast is Michelle Hurd’s Raffi Musiker, who has her own mission and a mystery to ponder. Who wants to bet it might tie-in with the other characters’ story?

From the looks of this new trailer, the season promises to close out the show with a bang––more than one, in fact, teasing plenty of starship action, peril and a warm reunion (mostly) for the old crew.

‘Star Trek: Picard’s third season starts on February 16th on Paramount+

  • Comic-Con 2022: ‘Star Trek’ TV Panel and New Trailers

    LwbnnWp8

Going into Paramount+’s big ‘Star Trek’ panel, we already knew something about ‘Star Trek: Picard’s third season. Two, actually.

It’ll feature a reunion with several of star Patrick Stewart’s old ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ cast/dear friends and that it’s the final season for ‘Picard’.

Filming for that third season kicked off almost immediately after the second wrapped, but despite that, there wasn’t a lot of footage on display aside from the general sizzle reel that kicked off the panel.

Fans were, however, treated to a teaser showcasing how the other ‘Next Generation’ veterans – Gates McFadden, Michael Dorn, LeVar Burton, Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis (the latter two, of course, popped up in Season 1) plus ‘Picard’ regulars Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd.

Patrick Stewart as Picard of the Paramount+ original series 'Star Trek: Picard.

Stewart appeared worryingly confused by some of the questions – to kick off, he didn’t realize he was being asked one and he couldn’t recall how Season 3 starts. Producer Alex Kurtzman was quick to intercede, commenting that it was Stewart who enforced the mandate that ‘Picard’ not be a cameo-heavy ‘Next Generation’ retread and that it had to “earn” the cast’s return.

With the various characters scattered across the galaxy, the initial chunk of the new season will play like a heist film as Jean-Luc rounds them up. Stewart was clear that they didn’t want to rehash old dynamics, but instead play the drama of the characters as they are now.

This season will feature a female villain that Kurtzman likened to Khan from classic ‘Trek’ movie sequel ‘Star Trek II’ in terms of head games and admitted that the storyline gave him “goosebumps’.

Oh, and while this was a strictly TV panel, Stewart did admit that he would be interested in returning to play the character in more ‘Trek’ movies, but there are no specific plans for that just yet.

    gR0W69Ee

It was the turn of the ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ team next, as executive producer Mike McMahan was joined by voice cast members Jack Quaid, Noelle Wells, Tawny Newsome and Dawnn Lewis.

As expected, it was a much more raucous affair, the actors getting into their “Trek beef” but revealing how close they’ve become as collaborators and how frustrating it was not to record together during the pandemic.

Dawnn Lewis put things on a more emotional track, sharing how she’d met and been mentored by ‘Trek’ icon Nichelle Nichols in her younger days.

A new trailer for Season 3 screened (you can watch it above), featuring plenty for eagle-eyed fans to obsess over. And, as the final sequence suggests, one whole episode will be set at Deep Space Nine. Justice for ‘DS9’!

Phil Lamarr as Admiral Freeman, Dawnn Lewis as Captain Carol Freeman and Lycia Naff as Captain Gomez of the Paramount+ series 'Star Trek: Lower Decks.
(L to R) Phil Lamarr as Admiral Freeman, Dawnn Lewis as Captain Carol Freeman and Lycia Naff as Captain Gomez of the Paramount+ series ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks. Photo: Paramount+ ©2021 CBS Interactive, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Season 2’s cliffhanger – which saw Captain Carol Freeman (Lewis) arrested after being accused of setting off a bomb on an alien planet – will be resolved relatively quickly, according to the gang.

“It’s rough, but we start season three full tilt looking for her,” Newsome says. “Trying to fix it, trying to set it right. I love the scrappiness, I love episode one of season three because our Lower Deckers are just like, ‘We gotta save the captain!’ This feels like an epic adventure. It feels like a movie!”

With ‘Lower Decks’ time on stage complete, it was the turn of ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ the latest addition to the TV ‘Trek’ family.

(L TO R) Ethan Peck as Spock, Anson Mount as Pike, and Dan Jeannotte as Samuel Kirk of the Paramount+ original series 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.'

The spin-off ‘Discovery’ starring Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike commanding the USS Enterprise in the days before Kirk has been a success for Paramount+ so far.

Mount was at the con alongside Ethan Peck, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Paul Wesley, and producers Henry Alonso Myers, Alex Kurtzman, and Rod Roddenberry.

But before things could get going properly, ‘Lower Decks’ voice duo Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome stormed the panel to reveal that ‘Strange New Worlds’ and ‘Lower Decks’ will have a crossover!

In this special crossover episode, featuring both live-action and animation, fans can expect to see Ensign Beckett Mariner, voiced by Newsome, and Ensign Brad Boimler, (Quaid), joining the Enterprise in season two of ‘Strange New Worlds’. The episode will be directed by ‘Trek’ veteran Jonathan Frakes. How it’ll work is anyone’s guess at this point, but it sounds like it could be ‘Roger Rabbit’ meets ‘Star Trek’…

    New Captain Kirk
Paul Wesley in ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.’ Courtesy of Marni Grossman/Paramount+

And it sounds like ‘Strange New Worlds’ will be pushing to do more high concept episodes in Season 2 than just that crossover. It’s not a show that has been afraid of playing with form and story, so that makes sense.

We can also expect to see more of the nasty reptilian aliens the Gorn, who were the unofficial Big Bad of Season 1.

Wesley – who was celebrating his birthday and was sung a rousing ‘Happy Birthday’ by the crowd talked up the James T. Kirk we met in the finale. “We only saw Kirk for a handful of scenes in that episode. I’m excited for people to see this younger version of Kirk,” he said. “There’s more levity, and it’s exciting to see that. He’s growing into the character we know, not an alternate reality captain like we saw in season 1.”

But don’t worry if you’re a fan of Anson Mount’s luxurious hair – neither he nor it are going anywhere just yet as the show has a few years to go before catching up to Kirk’s era in command.

Finally, Kurtzman was asked whether ‘Deep Space Nine’ would get the revitalization treatment following the ‘Next Generation’ (in ‘Picard’) and Classic ‘Trek’ eras (in ‘Strange New Worlds’). He told the crowd not yet, since the producers didn’t want to just pull on threads of the past for novelty’s sake.

‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ is due to return to Paramount+ on August 25th, with ‘Star Trek Picard’s final season and ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Season 2 due next year.

  • ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Spoilers Explained

Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff i

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ is here and wow, do we have a lot to talk about.

While the film follows Marvel’s trend of slowly moving away from crazy connections (save for a few references to both ‘WandaVision’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’), we still have a lot to cover. So here we’ll get into the end-credits scene, the introduction of the Illuminati, and what it all means!

So, let’s start off with the big one, the mid-credits scene. At the end of the movie, we witness Stephen Strange’s third eye revealing itself and an instant fear that would strike in anyone as who saw one of his multiverse counterparts with the same third eye. But in the scene following that, Stephen looks pretty okay! Also looking fancy in a new jacket and scarf.

A portal opens in front of him and Charlize Theron, making her first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, steps out. She tells Strange he created an incursion in another universe and that he must help stop it, then Stephen changes into his robes and suddenly, the third eye appears on his forehead, and he follows her into the portal.

    Charlize Theron in 'Atomic Blonde.'
Charlize Theron in 2017’s ‘Atomic Blonde.’

Now we have a lot to talk about. Let’s start with the new character reveal, Clea, or as she’s known in the comics currently, the Sorceress Supreme. Introduced in 1964, Clea is the niece of Doramamu—yes, the one Strange very cleanly bargained with in the first ‘Doctor Strange’. In the comics, she meets Stephen when he’s sent to the Dark Dimension. Even going on to marry him later.

This storyline would match up perfectly for the next film, as it is shown in ‘Multiverse of Madness’ that Stephen has come to terms with the fact he and Christine can never be together. And while he may not know the answer to the question “are you happy?”, it’s a great moment for Clea to come into his life.

Next, that weird extra eye. The Eye of Agamotto is considered the amulet of knowledge and grants the wearer the ability to see something before it happens, which we saw in ‘Avengers Endgame’. This could also be a reference to actual real-world myth, which says that the ‘opening of one’s third eye’ means many things, but mainly a representation of one’s power of clairvoyance. Exactly what the Eye does in the MCU, is yet to be determined. This doesn’t exactly mean Stephen’s evil now, but we should keep “an eye on” how much power he actually does have.

But the after-credits scene wasn’t the only major reveal that the film gave us. Halfway through, Strange and America Chavez get blasted into a Universe which is pretty much run by a superhero secret society called the Illuminati (first appearing in Marvel Comics in 2005.)

Rachel McAdams as Dr. Christine Palmer, Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange, and Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez

We find out that this universe’s Doctor Strange created it himself, which now consists of the Sorcerer Supreme Karl Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), Blackbolt (Anson Mount), Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell), Captain Marvel (Lashana Lynch) and Reed Richards (John Krasinski).

Let’s start with the ones we do know and have seen in the MCU. Captain Carter, Maria Rambeau & Blackbolt.

Peggy Carter’s multiverse counterpoint was first seen in the ‘What If…?,’ which aired on Disney+. For those who don’t know, she is basically Steve Rogers if she took the super soldier serum instead of him. Maria was last seen in ‘Captain Marvel’ in 2019, as Carol’s best friend from the air force. We can deduce in this universe that she obviously got the cosmic powers instead of Danvers.

Now Blackbolt is a bit different. He’s the leader of the Inhumans on Earth and has the power to kill anyone with just a whisper. He is played by the same actor from the very short lived ‘Inhumans’ show that aired on ABC, coinciding with ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ While its reception wasn’t fantastic, it’s commendable to see Marvel and Disney bring back the same actor.

Now for two characters we had yet to see until now, Charles Xavier & Reed Richards. While they both have appeared in different studio films, this is the first time we have seen them in the MCU. But what versions are we seeing?

Many have theorized that this version of Professor X is not the one we have seen in Fox’s ‘X-Men’ films. Most point to his chair in the film, and the little sound cue that plays when he wheels out, both connecting to the 90s ‘X-Men’ cartoon. The one that Marvel just so happens to be reviving for Disney+, called ‘X-Men ‘97.’ While he does die in this universe, who’s to say he’s not still alive in others with the same chair? And could the new ‘X-Men’ cartoon connect to ‘Multiverse of Madness’ by being its own universe?

Finally, we have Reed Richards, played by actual fan-casted John Krasinski. While we got Fox’s ‘Fantastic Four’ in the past, this is the first time we’ve seen a hero from that team in an MCU property. It’s hinted that the Illuminati is funded by the Baxter foundation, but what could his inclusion mean? It’s highly speculated that this could be both a little nod and hint by Marvel. One to his casting (photoshops aplenty before this reveal) and could be also a sign of what’s to come.

We know Marvel is making a ‘Fantastic Four’ film and that it will be attached to the overall MCU. But we have no info on the story or the production other than director shakeups. While seeing fan-favorite casting come to life is a great time, this could just be another universe version of Reed Richards. When he does return in his own film, there’s a chance we’ll see a different actor playing him.

I know all of this may sound confusing like all the multiverses shown in the film, so I hope this little breakdown helps a bit! ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ has brought the MCU into the new era—and has given us some exciting clues on where it could be going next.

Let’s see if ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ continues our journey through the Marvel Multiverse!

  • More ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ Cast Headed for ‘Star Trek: Picard’

Sir Patrick Stewart and John de Lancie

In what constitutes a good news/bad news situation for fans of Paramount+ series ‘Star Trek: Picard’, the streaming service has announced that more of Patrick Stewart’s former ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ castmates will appear in the third season of the sci-fi series. The bad news aspect? That will also serve to wrap up the show.

‘Star Trek: Picard’, which features Stewart as the venerable former Captain (now Admiral) Picard as he deals with new adventures and threats past, present and future, has not been shy in keeping connective tissue with the 1980s and 1990s series, even as it charts its own course.

Former ‘TNG’ stars Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis guest-starred in Season 1 as Will Riker and Deanna Troi, while Brent Spiner’s Data (and other characters brought to life by the actor) formed a key part of the storyline for that season.

Now, though, Paramount+ has used “First Contact Day” (aka April 5, the day in 2063 in which humans encountered the Vulcans, as seen in 1996 movie that featured the ‘Next Generation’ characters battling a threat from the Borg), to announce that more of that show’s cast will be back to see their old commander.

How exactly they will fit into the plot for Season 3 is unknown at this point, but there are subtle clues about legacy in the teaser video put out by the streaming service to mark the announcement. And it looks like Riker in particular will be back in action in a big way.

“I remember watching the premiere of ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ almost 34 years ago with my father like it was yesterday. It was the spark that ignited my love for science fiction,” says Terry Matalas, Season 3 showrunner and executive producer. “So, it’s most fitting that the story of Jean-Luc Picard ends honoring the beginning, with his dearest and most loyal friends from the U.S.S. Enterprise. It would be an understatement to say that giving these characters a proper send-off is an honor. The entire ‘Picard’ team and I can’t wait for fans to experience this final, high-stakes, starship-bound adventure in Season 3!”

‘Picard’ Season 3 wrapped filming last month, having kicked off production shortly after Season 2 shot its final scenes. That season is still midway through airing, and brings back another ‘Next Generation’ favorite, as John De Lancie’s troublesome alien Q is part of the storyline.

Seeing the crew of the Enterprise-D properly back together will certainly help us deal with the disappointment of learning that ‘Picard’ is coming to an end. The announcement made no mention of when the season might start, but for now you can find ‘Star Trek: Picard’ releasing new episodes every Thursday on Paramount+, with the season finale due May 5th.

Movie studios like to go big with their Super Bowl trailers these days, and few have the capability like Marvel. The new trailer for ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ certainly showed that off, as Benedict Cumberbatch’s sorcerer faced creatures and consequences.

The latter come courtesy of his actions in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ in which (for the benefit of the three people who haven’t seen it), Doctor Strange tampered with the multiverse to protect Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) true identity.

Those chickens have well and truly come home to roost – and some of them look like weird tentacled beasts. Yes, turns out tampering with the multiverse is sort of a bad idea, and now Strange has the bad dreams to prove it. Yet unlike a certain more recent Marvel character, he can tell the difference between waking life and dreams.

Trouble is, his waking life is a real nightmare, since the dimensions are beginning to merge and he’s in big trouble for that little spell. As Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Mordo points out, Strange will be held responsible.

Our favourite Sorcerer (not Supreme – that’s Benedict Wong’s Wong, who looks to be in trouble himself) seeks out Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), who makes her own good point that there’s a real double standard at play: his rule-breaking saw him hailed a hero, she’s been called a villain for what went down during ‘WandaVision’.

Yet Strange will also face some judgement, hauled in front of a tribunal to answer for what he did – and that sounds like Patrick Stewart, AKA the Professor X of Fox/Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ movies.

The multi-dimensional nature of the story naturally lends itself to plenty of cameos from across the MCU and beyond, and one of the big advantages of Disney owning… well, everything… is that so many characters could potentially appear. Fans have already spotted Captain Carter’s (Hayley Atwell) shield on the poster for the movie, which points to her variant from ‘What If…?’ showing up.

And talking of the animated Marvel series, that scruffier looking Strange who makes an appearance comes from the story that saw him shatter his own existence trying to save Dr. Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams, who is also on screen here, looking very much alive as she did at the end of the first movie). Will he be a problem or an ally for “our” Strange? Only time will tell.

Making her debut in this movie is a more recent character from Marvel comics, America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), an interdimensional butt-kicker who is sure to have a big impact going forward.

What this truly represents, though is a big homecoming for director Sam Raimi, who can unleash amazing imagery when he wants (with the music coming from old friend Danny Elfman). And, paired with a script from ‘Loki’s Michael Waldron, anything can happen… And probably will.

‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ will open in theaters on May 6th.

  • ‘Star Trek: Picard’ Trailer Brings Back Familiar Faces for One Last Mission

‘Star Trek: Picard’ Trailer Brings Back Familiar Faces for One Last Mission

    CBS All-Access

    Engage!

A new full-length trailer for “Star Trek: Picard” debuted at San Diego Comic-Con and it was full of surprises. The series, which follows Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) in retirement, will feature two characters from past series. Jean-Luc Picard’s “dead” crew member Data (Brent Spiner) as well as “Star Trek: Voyager’s” Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) appear.

The latter shows up to Picard’s vineyard, where the venerated Enterprise captain has retired from Starfleet. “What the hell are you doing out here, Picard?” she asks. “Saving the galaxy?”

Isn’t that what he does? The trailer lays out more of the story we can expect from the season. Picard meets a young woman with special powers who comes to him for help. So he does what he’s good at: assembles a new crew (including Michelle Hurt and Santiago Cabrera) and returns to space.

As for Data, we see his disassembled body. But at the very end of the trailer, we see Picard playing chess with … Data.

“I don’t want the game to end,” Picard says.

“I can see that, Captain,” Data replies.

During the panel, showrunner Michael Cabon revealed more familiar faces will be popping up — including Jonathan Frakes as Will Riker and Mirina Sirtis as Deanna Troi.

“Star Trek: Picard” is set to premiere on CBS All-Access in 2020.

  • ‘Star Trek: Picard’ Teaser Trailer Explores Patrick Stewart’s Retirement Years

‘Star Trek: Picard’ Teaser Trailer Explores Patrick Stewart’s Retirement Years

    CBS

“Why did you leave Starfleet, Admiral?”

That chilling question lingers over the first teaser trailer for “Star Trek: Picard,” the upcoming CBS All-Access series that brings back Patrick Stewart as the venerated leader who once captained the Enterprise on “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”

The teaser is comprised of sun-dappled footage from Picard’s winery, where he has retired after his space-exploring career. But in voiceover, a woman wonders what an “unimaginable” tragedy cost Picard. “Your faith in us? Your faith in yourself?”

Showrunner Alex Kurtzman has described the series as a contemplative character study. “What happens when circumstances have conspired to not give him the happiest of endings?” he told the L.A. Times. “Hopefully, it’s a reinforcement of [“Star Trek” creator Gene] Roddenberry’s vision of optimism. He’s going to have to go through deep valleys to get back to the light.”

“Star Trek: Picard” does not yet have a premiere date.
