‘The White Lotus’ Season 3 receives 7 out of 10 stars.

Launching on HBO and streaming service Max with its first episode on February 16th, the third season of Mike White’s darkly hued comedy drama series ‘The White Lotus‘ is set at yet another location for the fictional, titular luxury resort chain, this time the lush climes of Thailand.

We’re greeted with a (mostly) new set of characters, all carrying some emotional baggage to complement their fancy suitcases. The question that must be asked, though, is the third time the charm?

“Everyone who comes to Thailand, they’re either hiding from someone or looking for someone…” So says one of the characters early in the season, and so it proves true: whether that means the someone they’re after or hiding from is a faith, a stranger or themselves.

Mike White has the formula down pat for the show now, and the real issue here is that it feels like he’s just putting minor spins on ideas that have been explored before. The characters might be different, but there is the typical clash between the spoiled guests and the staff who must cater to their whims, and while it would be boring if everyone were happy and settled, the crises don’t perhaps always add up to the same level of drama as previous outings.

    Script and Direction

Walton Goggins in 'The White Lotus' Season 3. Photo: Fabio Lovino/HBO.

White, who writes and directs every episode like an extended indie movie (albeit with the hefty budget of a prestige HBO show) brings his usual style and wit to the show, crafting another group of memorable characters.

Yet, as mentioned, they feel like versions of other seasons’ guests –– the younger ones are mostly looking for hedonistic party times, while the elders want to relax and escape their stressful lives.

And there is the standard assortment of people dealing with personal issues, from financial difficulties to a tragic secret from their past that has them simmering with vengeful anger that they’ve not shared with anyone around them, so everyone else thinks they’re just grumpy.

While the exploration of faith and religion as the big theme is new here, it’s not as fresh as it might be given how one young character explored the native traditions of Hawaii back in the first season, and again their wealthy, slightly conservative parents can’t quite understand the appeal or feeling like it’s a failure in upbringing.

Thankfully, the cast help to elevate the material.

    Cast and Performances

Given the show’s award-winning ways, it’s not surprising that an excellent crop of actors has agreed to show up for Season 3 (and the promise of spending some time in a tropical locale, all expenses paid, doesn’t hurt either). You may find yourself, however, wishing they had fresher scripts to work from –– and there are other issues too.

Walton Goggins plays Rick Hatchett, a wealthy sort (one of those who prefers not to discuss in detail how they earned their fortune) who is traveling with younger girlfriend Chelsea (a funny and spirited type brought to life by ‘Sex Education’s Aimee Lou Wood).

Rick’s the aforementioned man on a mission, though he has not disclosed that to anyone, and Goggins plays him with appropriate snark and gruffness, and he makes for an entertaining duo with Wood.

Then we have Michelle Monaghan’s Jaclyn Lemon, a TV actress traveling with two old friends, Carrie Coon’s Laurie and Leslie Bibb’s Kate. Away for a girls’ trip on Jaclyn’s dime, you won’t be shocked when old issues rear their heads between them and the lure of an attractive young man who works at the hotel drives a wedge into a friendship that was already starting to drift apart over the years.

Filling the spot of wealthy-but-troubled family there’s Jason Isaacs as Timothy Ratliff, at the resort with pill-popping wife Victoria (Parker Posey) and their brood, gym bro Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger), who has gone into financial business working for his dad, spiritual Piper (Sarah Catherine Hook) who has her own reasons for the trip and bookish Lochlan (Sam Nivola), who Saxon is looking to draw out of his shell.

While the performances are all solid, the biggest issue for that group is Isaacs attempting a Texan accent, which seems to wander around the States and occasionally sounds Australian. While the actor has done good work in the past, here the accent gets in his way.

Around them are the staff, including solid supporting turns from Tayme Thapthimthong as ambitious security officer Gaitok, who has a thing for resort worker and dancer Mook (Lalisa Manoban), whose stories will become knotted up with the guests.

And Natasha Rothwell makes a welcome return as Belinda from Season 1, who is given a little more depth here.

    Final Thoughts

‘The White Lotus’ knows what it needs to do each season and does it with style. If it perhaps feels a little less fresh these days, there is still enough mystery to keep you hooked and ready to spend time with these people –– no matter how annoying some of them might turn out to be.

HBO gave press the first six episodes of eight, so we can’t tell you whether the show solves its lingering background mystery as well as previous seasons, but it’ll keep you guessing.

The new season of the show brings a fresh group of wealthy characters (and the return of Natasha Rothwell’s spa worker Belinda Lindsey from Season 1’s Maui resort, who is hoping to pick up some tips from the staff) traveling to the lush jungles and beaches of Thailand.

Here, some of the characters are ready to explore faith and mysticism, others are looking for some much needed bonding time and at least one has a dark hidden agenda for their trip that could have a tragic fallout.

    Preview:

    • Jason Isaacs, Parker Posey and Michelle Monaghan have boarded ‘The White Lotus’ for Season 3.
    • Mike White is back to write and direct the series.
    • Season 3 will be set in Thailand.

We’ve had to wait longer than originally thought for our next visit to a White Lotus property –– the fictional luxury resorts that form the backdrop for Mike White’s darkly comic series ‘The White Lotus’, which has, across two seasons, brought to life some grotesque characters and others who interact with them.

With White gearing up to start work on the next season, we know some of the people who will be showing up in the cast.

Who has joined ‘The White Lotus’ Season 3?

According to Variety, the new season will feature the following…

And in a separate report from Jeff Sneider, ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’s Carrie Coon is also in talks for the series, though she is less confirmed.

There are also the rumored names who are even less official at this point: Woody Harrelson, Walton Goggins and Patrick Schwarzenegger are among those who are mooted. We’ll see if any of those become a reality.

The new additions join Natasha Rothwell, who will reprise the role of Belinda from the first season (you might recall her as the kindly, enthusiastic spa worker who strikes up a friendship with Jennifer Coolidge’s Tanya McQuoid).

What’s the story of ‘The White Lotus’ Season 3?

There are no details about the story for this one yet, though we can reliably assume that it’ll follow a group of wealthy, privileged types and the associated hotel staff and hangers-on who orbit them.

Do we think there might be a murder or a mysterious death that is teased early on and explained towards the end? Given the format to date, it’s a fair guess.

Where will the new season of ‘The White Lotus’ take place?

Following stays in Hawaii and then Italy, the third season’s locale has been confirmed as Thailand, where a Four Seasons property will be transformed into the White Lotus brand of hotels.

Here’s what Janet Graham Borba, executive vice president of production for HBO & Max said about the choice:

“We are pleased to partner with the Tourism Authority of Thailand to execute Mike’s creative vision and showcase all that the beautiful country of Thailand has to offer, as the next group of guests check in to the White Lotus.”

You do have to wonder if White is just picking locations from his vacation bucket list, but when the show is as entertaining as this, it’s hard to hold it against him.

When will ‘The White Lotus’ be on screens?

HBO and Max have yet to announce a date for this one, though if completed in time it could be on screens before the end of the year –– though more likely it’ll be 2025.

  • New Trailer for Prime Video’s ‘The Boys’ Spinoff ‘Gen V’

An official teaser trailer for ‘Gen V’ has been released. As a spin-off for the superhero Prime Video series ‘The Boys’, the trailer gives us a look at what we can expect from the upcoming show ahead of its September 29th premiere. The spin-off will follow a group of new students attending Godolkin University – a school named after John Godolkin, where the superpowered can train and learn more about their abilities. Setting the scene, the teaser opens up with familiar faces of A-Train, Queen Maeve, and Homelander, followed by quick flashes of things going terribly wrong.

Just like ‘The Boys,’ the teaser trailer for ‘Gen V’ promises the same amount of blood, gore, and strong language with images of blood, guts, and violent action sequences. While a school welcome announcement calls the university “a safe space to thrive,” the teaser shows just how competitive the students can be. Lead character Marie Moreau who dreams of being the first Black woman in The Seven is told she could be the top-ranking freshman in the history of the school, but given the competitive nature of the school, it will also place a target on her back.

It seems there’ll be more than just a group of highly competitive superpowered students doing the damage in the series, as there’s a line in the trailer alluding to more, “There are dangerous, evil people at that school.” Clancy Brown’s Richard “Rich” Brinkerhoff (also known as Coach Brink) ominous line of “Being a hero is not about glory, it’s about sacrifice,’ hints that not everyone will graduate from Goldolkin University. And from the looks of it, aside from the blood and gore, we’re getting dismembered puppets as well.

The series is set to premiere with three episodes, with subsequent episodes airing weekly.

  • Constance Wu and JD Pardo Talk ‘The Terminal List’

    Js2xsAGL

Premiering on Prime Video beginning July 1st is the new action series ‘The Terminal List,’ which is based on the novel of the same name by Jack Carr and directed by Antoine Fuqua.

The series stars Chris Pratt as Lt. Commander James Reece, a former Navy SEAL officer investigating why his entire platoon was ambushed during a high-stakes covert mission.

In addition to Pratt, the cast also includes Taylor Kitsch, Constance Wu, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Riley Keough, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Arlo Mertz, Jai Courtney, JD Pardo, Tyner Rushing and LaMonica Garrett.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Constance Wu and JD Pardo about their work on ‘The Terminal List.’

JD Pardo and Constance Wu in Prime Video's 'The Terminal List.'
(L to R) JD Pardo and Constance Wu in Prime Video’s ‘The Terminal List.’

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Wu and Pardo, as well as Chris Pratt, Taylor Kitsch, Jeanne Tripplehorn, LaMonica Garrett, author Jack Carr, writer David DiGillio, and director Antonie Fuqua.

Moviefone: To begin with, can you both describe your characters for our audience?

JD Pardo: That’s an interesting question. My character is an original character created for the series, so I can’t really get into it too much because I think I’ll start spoiling some things. I play Tony Layun, who’s an FBI agent in San Diego, which is a smaller market. When he sees that James Reece is a fugitive and he’s wanted, and that everyone says that he can’t be caught and how dangerous he is, Tony wants to get him. So, that’s where I come in.

Constance Wu: I play Katie Buranek, who is a war correspondent, and has a personal history with journalism that makes journalistic integrity really personally important to her. She gets involved with the story of James Reece and what happened to his team of SEALs. She finds that there are a lot of inconsistencies and mystery around it. As someone who is committed to uncovering the truth and doing it with journalistic integrity, she sets on a mission in the same way James Reece sets on his type of mission. Her mission is to uncover the truth, to do justice to and for these service men and women who are so often overlooked, when they really are our nation’s heroes fighting for us.

MF: Finally, can you both talk about how your character’s react to Reece’s actions in the first episode?

JP: In the beginning, my character, he got into fugitives because he likes things being black and white. He doesn’t want to get into the emotion. He doesn’t want to get into that gray. If you’re bad, you’re bad, you do bad things and I want to catch you. As it starts to unfold, he gets thrown into this gray area and then it becomes a question of morality. What is good? What is bad? What is the truth? How is the truth manipulated? What are we told? Then eventually he has to start looking within himself and what his own heart tells him. It’s really complicated, and at the same time feels completely relatable.

Constance Wu: I think Katie’s relationship with James Reece, Chris Pratt’s character, one of the things I love that it continues to evolve and change. I do think at the beginning, it’s a journalistic scoop. She’s looking for a story, but as she looks at the pieces of the story and finds some mystery and inconsistencies in it, then it becomes about a personal quest to uncover the truth, and Reece is a means to that. He’s also a person who this affected. The tragedy that happens in the beginning, it affected him and his family. So, she cares about it from a human level. The more she utilizes him as a source, the more she gets to know him as a person.

I think that evolution of understanding him and everything he’s going through, and what his goals are and why they are those goals, I think changes her point of view almost from episode to episode. That’s really fun that it’s not static because we’re all humans and we’re way more complex than that. I think that’s a good thing we can all think about.

Moviefone: To begin with, Chris how would you describe the premise of ‘The Terminal List?’

Chris Pratt: Well, it’s based on the bestselling novel by Jack Carr. It follows Lieutenant Commander, James Reece, as his platoon of Navy Seals is killed in a covert mission overseas. We follow him home and realize that his memories of the event are conflicting with reality and that he is in a way, an unreliable narrator to his own story.

As his paranoia starts to mount we question whether or not he’s in the middle of a conspiracy or whether he’s losing his mind. So, it’s a psychological thriller that will really keep you guessing. It’s got incredible action, wonderful performances, it’s truly designed to honor the Navy Seal community, and we did our very best to bring this be bestselling book to screen.

MF: Taylor, did you read Jack Carr’s book before shooting the series?

Taylor Kitsch: I did not. No, I used the script as my Bible, more or less for Ben. Then of course I reached out to Jack Carr, which he couldn’t have been more inviting to talk about Ben. I think the most important part is really him giving me the reign to make it my own. I know this community pretty well, we’ve both played Navy Seals before, and to entrust me with that is very empowering. So, I was very flattered by it.

Taylor Kitsch in Prime Video’s ‘The Terminal List’
Taylor Kitsch in Prime Video’s ‘The Terminal List’

MF: What kind of training did you go through to prepare for ‘The Terminal List?’

CP: I mean, there’s physical training to get yourself in shape, so that you look like somebody who could be a Navy Seal. But granted, the only homogeny amongst this group of men is typically their grit, their fortitude, and their determination. But there are tall ones, short ones, kind of chunky ones, and skinny ones too. Some of them are in incredible shape, they look like they’re CrossFit gods and other guys who just are a little unassuming. So, they really come in all shapes and sizes.

The choice was to give yourself a physicality that would be believable if you were a Navy Seal. But most of the training that you really can’t fake is tactical training. Being able to hold a weapon system, transition between one weapon to another, shoot a gun without blinking your eyes or flinching, knowing how to hold a gun and where to hold your eyes, and how to walk into a room or turn around a corner or those types of things.

So, we both went through extensive training under the guidance of several Navy Seals that we hired as tech advisors and that we surrounded ourselves with so that we could be authentic in our movements. Oftentimes we’d do a take and we’d feel really good about it. They’d say, “you know what? Look at this, let’s try to fix those things and we’ll do it again.” We always gave them the room to be honest with us and critical of us, so that we could present these characters in an authentic way that would pass their sniff test. So, that’s where most of the training was.

MF: Finally, Taylor what was the most challenging scene for you to perform?

TK: I think the tactical part, to be honest. The beauty of this action is its story driven. It’s not violence for the sake of violence. You finally get to see these two guys in a whole different realm, serving each other, and working with each other through these different spots, indoor, outdoor, and even getting shot in the process and what that looks like. So, just figuring that out with the Seals and with Chris and again, keeping it as authentic and grounded as you can.
