  • ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’ Sequel Officially Confirmed

‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’ Sequel Officially Confirmed

    Netflix

After winning over millions of fans (including “Stranger Things” star Millie Bobby Brown) earlier this year, devotees of Netflix rom-com “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” have been clamoring for a follow-up to the YA novel adaptation. And now, a sequel has officially been confirmed.

Studio Paramount has just inked a huge new deal with Netflix to produce more original films for the streaming giant, and first on the list is a “To All the Boys” sequel. In an interview with Deadline, Viacom CEO Bob Bakish said that the first flick “is one of the most-viewed films of all time” on Netflix, making greenlighting a follow-up a slam dunk for the company (Viacom is the parent company of Paramount).

While fans would certainly agree, this development wasn’t always a sure thing. As recently as last week, Netflix denied that a sequel was confirmed, and while stars Lana Condor and Noah Centineo said they would absolutely join a follow-up, they’ve also been pretty busy lately lining up other projects.

Thankfully, it looks like the stars are aligning for this delightful soon-to-be-series. Stay tuned for more details as they become available.

  • ‘Gladiator’ Sequel Now in Development, Led by Ridley Scott

‘Gladiator’ Sequel Now in Development, Led by Ridley Scott

    Russell Crowe in Gladiator
    DreamWorks Pictures

Ridley Scott is ready for more “Gladiator.”

The director of the multi-Academy Award-winning film has started developing a sequel, Deadline reports. He is looking to helm “Gladiator 2,” with Peter Craig (“12 Strong”) writing the script.

The original film saw protagonist Maximus (Russell Crowe) meet a tragic end, as Deadline points out, so there will be a new lead character. The sequel will follow Lucius (played by Spencer Treat Clark in the original), who was the young boy Maximus saved during his quest for vengeance. Lucius was the son of the late co-emperor Lucius Verus and Lucilla (Connie Nielsen).

Scott has been talking about a “Gladiator” sequel for years now, and in fact, he previously said it might be possible to involve Crowe. “I know how to bring him back. … There is a way,” he told EW in March 2017.  So far, though, it doesn’t look like Crowe will return.

Paramount is reportedly the studio behind the project, with Universal potentially co-financing. The original film’s distributor, DreamWorks, is not involved. Meanwhile, Scott is producing through his production company, Scott Free, alongside Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher of Red Wagon and Parkes + MacDonald’s Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald.

The film does not yet have a release date.

  • A ‘Clueless’ Remake Is Reportedly in Development, and Fans Aren’t Happy

A ‘Clueless’ Remake Is Reportedly in Development, and Fans Aren’t Happy

Alicia Silverstone and Stacey Dash in Clueless

Yet another movie is reportedly getting remade, and this time, there are some vocal opponents.

Paramount Pictures is working on a “Clueless” remake, according to a Variety report on Thursday, Oct. 25. The studio has apparently lined up “GLOW” writer Marquita Robinson to pen the new script. Yet the news didn’t thrill fans of the 1995 film starring Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, Paul Rudd, and Donald Faison. The reaction on Twitter from die-hard “Clueless” stans was pretty much a resounding, “As if!”

A lot of fans pointed out in their tweets that “Clueless” — a modern-day adaptation of the Jane Austen novel “Emma” — is already perfection. They’re not really interested in seeing a remake when they can just rewatch the original. See for yourself below:

It’s possible that fans might get on board with the plan when they learn more about it, but so far, details are scarce. In the meantime, we recommend a viewing of “Clueless” for anyone worried about the remake — no matter what happens, they can’t take that away from us.

  • Nickelodeon Is Reviving ‘Rugrats’ With Animated Series, Live-Action Movie

    Nickelodeon

A staple of ’90s kids television is poised to make a big comeback, with the “Rugrats” franchise set for a new TV series and movie.

Nickelodeon and Paramount Pictures announced this week that the titular tots — Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil, Susie, and Angelica — are returning to both the small and big screens. Nick has ordered a brand new season of its classic animated series, and production is already underway on its 26 episodes. Original creators Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó, and Paul Germain will all be back to executive produce.

In addition to the show, a live-action “Rugrats” movie is also planned, which will feature CGI versions of the beloved characters. And like any good reboot, both iterations of the new “Rugrats” will “introduce a new world of characters,” according to Nick.

“Rugrats” first hit Nickelodeon back in 1991, and featured the fantastical playroom adventures of a group of babies, led by the fearless Tommy Pickles. It ran for nine seasons, and also spawned two feature films.

Details about casting and premiere dates for the show are being kept under wraps for now, but the movie already has a release date: November 13, 2020. We can’t wait.

  • James Marsden Set to Star in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ Movie: Report

The “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie cas may be starting to come together.

News about the film began rolling in quickly this week. Roughly a day after That Hashtag Show reported on May 29 that Paul Rudd was in the running to star as Tom in the upcoming video game-inspired action flick, the outlet reported that he was, in fact, no longer in consideration for the role, per Paramount. Now, the latest is that James Marsden will star in the film, as sources tell Variety.

The report didn’t specify whether the “Westworld” actor would take the role of Tom. The character is said to be a police officer who works along Sonic the Hedgehog to stop the villain Doctor Robotnik. Whether or not Marsden plays Tom, though, he’ll take a break from cavorting with androids and instead run around with a blue anthropomorphic hedgehog.

The movie is based on the Sega video game series that debuted in 1991. It will blend animation and live-action as Sonic works to bring down his nemesis.

The “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie is slated to open Nov. 15, 2019.

  • It’s Official: ‘Transformers 7’ Has Been Pulled From Release Schedule

    It’s not happening.

Paramount shuffled its release schedule around a bit, and removed “Transformers 7” completely. It was previously set to arrive in theaters on June 28, 2019.

The “Bumblebee” spinoff — considered “Transformers 6” — is still scheduled for this December 21.

This is what can happen when a studio gets too ambitious. Back in 2016, Paramount announced the release dates for “Transformers” 5, 6, and 7 — with 5 released on June 23, 2017 (that was “The Last Knight’”), followed by “Transformers 6” on June 8 (that’s “Bumblebee,” which was moved to December), and then “Transformers 7” on June 28, 2019.

It’s not too shocking to see “Transformers 7” get the boot after the performance of “Transformers: The Last Knight.” It made a decent amount of money overseas, but just $130 million at the domestic box office off a reported $217 million budget. Plus, both critics and fans were unimpressed, with the movie picking up multiple Razzie Nominations and little else.

But the franchise isn’t done, it’s reportedly getting a makeover/reboot following “Bumblebee.” We’ll see.

In other Paramount schedule news, Tiffany Haddish’s comedy “Limited Partners” now has the June 28, 2019 release date. Taron Egerton’s Elton John biopic “Rocketman” got a release date of May 17, 2019, which may be considered counterprogramming to “John Wick: Chapter Three,” which opens the same day. And the Stephen King adaptation “Pet Sematary” got its release date moved up just a bit from April 19, 2019 to April 5, 2019.

  • Alicia Silverstone Remembers ‘Clueless’ Co-Star Brittany Murphy’s ‘Amazing’ Audition

In a world full of chaos, we’ve got “Clueless,” and it never fails to inspire smiles in some way.

With actress Alicia Silverstone appearing in the upcoming “20/20” special “Lights, Camera, Summer!,” she got to talk about the iconic 1995 movie — and better still, we get to listen. ABC released a clip via EW on Monday, and it features a touching moment in which Silverstone discusses her late co-star Brittany Murphy. When asked about Murphy’s audition, Silverstone recalls how “amazing” the actress was and how she was pulling for Murphy even though it wasn’t her call.

“She’s the main person I remember from the auditions because her audition was so amazing,” Silverstone says in the clip. “I don’t think I had a voice in that room, but I was like, ‘We’re going with her right? We’re going with her.’”

Of course, Murphy won over more than her soon-to-be co-star; she landed the part and went on to play Tai Frasier, the new girl whom Cher (Silverstone) takes under her wing and who finds that her buns… they feel nothin’ like steel.

The “20/20” special “Lights, Camera, Summer!” airs May 28.

  • ‘Star Trek 4’ Finds Film Franchise’s First Female Director in S.J. Clarkson: Report

At long last, the Star Trek film franchise has reached a major milestone.

A director for the upcoming movie “Star Trek 4” has reportedly been found. Paramount Pictures has brought on S.J. Clarkson, making her the first woman to ever direct one of the films, according to Variety. The studio has not confirmed the news or commented on the report.

Assuming Clarkson does indeed helm the movie, she’ll direct from a script written by J.D. Payne and Patrick McCay. The film follows three prior installments in the reboot franchise, not to mention 10 other films between the Original Series and the Next Generation. The three most recent films were directed by J.J. Abrams (“Star Trek” and “Star Trek Into Darkness”) and Justin Lin (“Star Trek Beyond”).

Clarkson has plenty of experience behind the camera. In particular, she’s done a lot of TV work, directing episodes of the British series “Mistresses” (which she co-created), NBC’s “Heroes,” HBO’s “Dexter,” Netflix’s “Marvel’s The Defenders,” and more.

Abrams and Lindsey Weber of Bad Robot are set to produce, and Skydance Media’s David Ellison and Dana Goldberg are executive producing.

“Star Trek 4” does not yet have a release date.

  • It’s Official: ‘A Quiet Place’ Sequel Is Happening

Shhhhhhh … it’s around the corner.

John Krasinski‘s horror film “A Quiet Place” is the kind of success story filmmakers — and studios — dream about.

So, yeah, there will be another one. That’s the way of our world — if it works, double it!

Paramount chairman-CEO Jim Gianopulos announced the sequel news at CinemaCon:

“If you told me five years ago that an almost silent film starring the very funny guy Jim from ‘The Office’ would have been a hit at Paramount, I would have said, ‘Well, I should go work at Paramount.’”

Haha. There’s no release date yet, since it’s early days and the first film is still making money at the box office.

“A Quiet Place” only cost about $17 million to make and has earned more than $213 million so far, worldwide. It even beat Dwayne Johnson’s “Rampage” this past week to reclaim the No. 1 spot at the box office.

Horror is huge! It may be the one thing that bridges our many divides. We liked to be scared poopless, and we’ll pay good money to whoever can do it well.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “A Quiet Place” screenwriters Bryan Woods and Scott Beck said they have plenty of material leftover for a sequel. So it’s not like they’ll have to come up with something out of nowhere just because the first film did well. That’s encouraging.

  • ‘First Wives Club’ TV Reboot Lands Series Order at Paramount

It’s official: The “First Wives Club” will be back in session soon.

Paramount Network (the recently-rebranded Spike TV) has given a series order to the long-gestating TV reboot of the hit ’90s comedy, after a different rebooted version at sister station TV Land didn’t make it past the pilot phase. The network apparently didn’t want to let go of the hot property, though, and scooped up the rights, handing over the reins to “Girls Trip” co-writer Tracy Oliver, whose concept won over the network.

“Tracy Oliver is a brilliant writer and the perfect visionary to bring this unforgettable story from the big screen to the small screen in a fresh and contemporary way,” said Keith Cox, president of development and production for Paramount Network, TV Land, and CMT, in a statement.

“‘Girls Trip’ was one of the funniest comedies in recent memory and we know Tracy will breathe new life, and some serious laughs, into these beloved ‘First Wives Club’ characters,” said Amy Powell, president of Paramount TV, in another statement.

There’s no word yet on what will be different this time around, though we imagine the general premise will remain the same. The original 1996 “First Wives Club” centered around three recently reunited college pals — played by Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler, and Diane Keaton — who band together to take revenge on their terrible exes, and discover their own inherent girl power along the way.

The show is set for a 10-episode first season, and production will begin this summer, with an eye toward a debut on Paramount sometime in 2019. We can’t wait to see who will join the cast. (We know Tiffany Haddish is busy doing just about everything, but we think she’d be absolutely perfect for this.)
