    Visionary filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is one of the most popular directors working today!

    He began his career directing classic horror films like ‘Cronos‘ and ‘The Devil’s Backbone‘ before turning to the superhero genre with ‘Blade II‘, ‘Hellboy‘ and ‘Hellboy II: The Golden Army‘.

    Del Toro received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay for his work on ‘Pan’s Labyrinth‘, and would go on to win Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director for ‘The Shape of Water‘, as well as an Oscar for Best Animated Feature for his work on ‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio‘.

    • A ‘Pacific Rim’ prequel series in in development.
    • ‘Arrival’ writer Eric Heisserer is overseeing the new show.

    Prequels are still something studios and TV companies like to explore, even though some fans have trouble finding out fresh details about the characters and concepts they like (see as a prime example the ‘Star Wars’ prequels).

    Still, the lure of finding a new way into existing titles is strong, and Legendary is looking to keep the prequel party going, commissioning an origin story for its ‘Pacific Rim’ movies from writer/producer Eric Heisserer.

    What’s the story of ‘Pacific Rim’?

    In Guillermo del Toro’s original movie, co-written by the director and Travis Beacham, an inter-dimensional rift opens at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, allowing massive monsters to enter our world and begin attacking humanity. In response, humans begin constructing giant fighting robots called Jaegers.

    The movie starred Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba as two of the humans leading the fight against the giant beasties.

    It was a success at the box office, earning $400 million at the worldwide box office and spawned a sequel called ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’ in 2018, directed by Steven S. DeKnight and featuring John Boyega as the son of Elba’s character alongside Cailee Spaeny and Scott Eastwood.

    That one didn’t have quite the same impact, earning a more muted $298 million globally.

    Since then, there has also been two seasons of a spin-off TV series on Netflix called ‘Pacific Rim: The Black’ with two seasons launching in 2021 and 2022.

    What else has Eric Heisserer worked on?

    Heisserer is that rare screenwriter whose name is becoming more known outside of geeky film circles because of his work.

    He notched an Academy Award nomination for best adapted screenplay for the film ‘Arrival’ in 2017.

    His other movie writing credits include the hit Netflix film ‘Bird Box’ as well as ‘Lights Out,’ ‘Hours; (which he also directed), ‘Bloodshot,’ and the 2010 remake of ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street.’

    As a writer/producer, he developed the Netflix series version of ‘Shadow and Bone’ based on the Grishaverse YA novels. It ran for two seasons.

    Here’s what Jason Clodfelter, president of Legendary Television had to say about Heisserer:

    “Eric is a multitalented, prolific creator whose track record of critical and commercial successes speaks for itself. We are thrilled to launch our partnership with Eric, Chronology, and Carmen, with a new entry in the epic, globally popular ‘Pacific Rim’ universe. We are certain their vision will make for an enthralling expansion to Legendary’s beloved franchise.”

    When will the ‘Pacific Rim’ prequel series be on screens?

    It’s far too early to speculate on that front –– the show is in the very early stages of development, with no word on a company picking it up for production and distribution yet. We’d imagine Netflix will at least be interested –– since it carried the spin-off and has worked with Heisserer in the past, but there is no information on that at this time.

  • Beyond Fest Announces Full 2023 Line Up

    Now entering its 11th year, the highest-attended genre film festival in the US, Beyond Fest is back and bigger than ever.

    The event, which has brought first looks at new movies and more to fans for years, is back this month, comprising 55 features, including 5 world premieres, 3 North American Premieres, 7 US premieres, and 18 West Coast Premieres.

    When and where is Beyond Fest 2023 happening?

    This year’s event runs between September 26th – October 10th.

    In partnership with the American Cinematheque and presented exclusively by distributor NEON, Beyond Fest will screen at the Aero Theatre, Los Feliz 3 and Regency Village Theatre.

    “With over 19,000 attendees in 2022, our goal this year was to go bigger while also exposing audiences to new filmmakers who represent the future.     What could I see at the 2023 Beyond Fest?

    Among the offerings at this year’s event are Gareth Edwards’ sci-fi epic ‘The Creator’, which is the opening night movie at the Aero, while Kristoffer Borgli’s comedy-satire sensation, ‘Dream Scenario’, featuring Nicolas Cage, will close things out.

    Paul Mescal stars in two new movies: first, opposite Andrew Scott and alongside Jamie Bell and Claire Foy, in Andrew Haigh’s metaphysical romantic drama ‘All of Us Strangers’, and then he’s opposite Saoirse Ronan in Garth Davis’ psychological drama ‘FOE’.

    We can also expect to see Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or winner ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ and Kitty Green’s slow-burn outback thriller ‘The Royal Hotel’.

    And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Talking of icebergs, James Cameron will also be in attendance: not bringing ‘Titanic’, but instead to introduce and then discuss the Special Edition of 1989’s ‘The Abyss’. You’d think the man would be too busy working on his ‘Avatar’ sequels, but Beyond Fest has him!

    There will also be a celebration of genre legend Roger Corman, including a special tribute screening with brand new 35mm prints of ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll High School’, ‘Piranha’, ‘Grand Theft Auto’ and ‘The Raven’ followed by a panel featuring Corman and longtime collaborators Ron Howard, Jon Davison, Amy Holden Jones, Joe Dante and Allan Arkush.

  • Box Office: ‘Pacific Rim Uprising’ Conquers ‘Black Panther’

    ​​​​LOS ANGELES, March 25, (Variety.com) – After weeks of speculating which film could slow “Black Panther’s” impressive roll, “Pacific Rim Uprising” took the top spot at the domestic box office.

    Universal and Legendary’s “Pacific Rim Uprising” landed a respectable $28 million opening weekend at 3,708 locations. The monster battle movie has garnered mixed critical response, with a current 46 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Though it opened with a softer debut than Guillermo del Toro‘s predecessor “Pacific Rim,” which saw $37 million in July 2013, the sequel was enough to dethrone “Black Panther” in the superhero tentpole’s sixth weekend.

    Steven S. DeKnight co-wrote and directed “Pacific Rim Uprising” with a reported $150 million budget. The original, which starred Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Charlie Hunnam, and Robert Kazinsky, went on to gross $411 million at the worldwide box office, thanks to a strong international showing, especially in China, where it made $112 million compared to the U.S.’ $101.8 million.

    The sequel is set 10 years after the Battle of the Breach with a new generation of Jaeger pilots ready to combat the evolving Kaiju monsters and prevent humanity’s extinction. John Boyega plays Jake Pentecost, the son of Elba’s character Stacker Pentecost, who sacrificed his life in the first film. Scott Eastwood, Jing Tian, Cailee Spaeny, Kikuchi, Burn Gorman, Adria Arjona, and Day also star.

    Still, in its sixth weekend “Black Panther” continues to be a powerhouse, nabbing the No. 2 spot with $17 million at 3,370 sites. That number lands “Black Panther” one of the seven highest sixth weekends in history. To date, the Marvel film has taken in $631 million, making it the fifth-highest all-time domestic grosses ahead of “The Avengers.”

    “It had to happen at some point, and Universal’s ‘Pacific Rim Uprising’ now holds the distinction of being the film that took over ‘Black Panther’s’ long-standing position as king of the weekend box office mountain,” Paul Dergarabedian, a box office analyst at comScore, said. “The latest Disney superhero film has been an absolute marvel, holding onto the top spot for a whopping five weeks, while sprinting its way up the all-time charts and now stands as the fifth highest grossing film of all-time in North America and ranks twelfth globally after just 38 days in theaters.

    Meanwhile, Roadside Attraction and Lionsgate’s faith-based “I Can Only Imagine” remains a force in its second weekend with $13 million from 2,253 sites. Based on the story behind the best-selling Christian song, “I Can Only Imagine” earned a surprisingly strong $17.1 million at the domestic box office, bringing its total up to $38 million.

    Following “I Can Only Imagine’s” success, biblical drama “Paul, Apostle of Christ” opened in line with estimates with $5 million at 1,473 sites over Palm Sunday weekend. The story follows James Faulkner as Saint Paul in his last days awaiting execution by Emperor Nero in Rome. Directed by Andrew Hyatt, the film also stars Jim Caviezel, Olivier Martinez, Joanne Whalley, and John Lynch.

    Also opening this weekend was Paramount Pictures and MGM’s animated comedy “Sherlock Gnomes,” which saw $10 million at 3,662 locations. That’s significantly lower than initial tracking estimates between $13 million to $18 million. The sequel to 2011’s “Gnomeo & Juliet,” which reeled in $194 million worldwide, sees the petite pair recruiting detective Sherlock Gnomes and his sidekick, Gnome Watson, to investigate the mysterious disappearance of other garden gnomes. Directed by John Stevenson and executive produced by Elton John, it features the voices of James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mary J. Blige, and Johnny Depp.

    The second weekend of Alicia Vikander‘s “Tomb Raider” landed $10 million from 3,854 locations, bringing its grosses up to $41 million, while the second weekend of “Love, Simon” took in $7 million with $23 million to date.

    Two smaller releases — Global Road Entertainment’s “Midnight Sun” and Bleecker Street and Fingerprint Releasing’s “Unsane” — debuted with $4 million and $3.6 million respectively.

    Young adult romantic drama “Midnight Sun” stars Bella Thorne as a teen who has been sheltered at home since childhood due to a life-threatening sensitivity to sunlight. Steven Soderbergh’s psychological thriller “Unsane” sees Claire Foy as a troubled woman stalked by her ex. Joshua Leonard, Jay Pharoah, Juno Temple, Aimee Mullins, and Amy Irving round out the cast.

    Rounding out the weekend, Wes Anderson‘s “Isle of Dogs” opened with $1.5 million in limited release, with a screen average of over $58 thousand in 27 theaters. The stop-motion animated film boasts a star-studded ensemble voice cast that includes Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, Greta Gerwig, Frances McDormand, and Bob Balaban.     John Boyega wants YOU to “join the Jaeger uprising” in “Pacific Rim 2.”

    “Pacific Rim: Uprising,” the sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 “Pacific Rim,” just released a recruitment video at San Diego Comic-Con, encouraging viewers to go to GoJaeger.com and join the uprising.

  • John Boyega Reveals ‘Pacific Rim 2’ Title on ‘First Day’ of Filming

    The sequel to Guillermo del Toro‘s 2013 sci-fi film “Pacific Rim” is now in production. Steven S. DeKnight is directing the second film, “Pacific Rim: Maelstrom,” for a February 2018 release.

    “Star Wars” actor John Boyega confirmed the title and the start date in a new Instagram post:

    Boyega will play the son of Idris Elba’s “Pacific Rim” character Stacker Pentecost, who — spoiler alert! — died in the first movie.

    Del Toro, who is producing the follow-up, said a lot of the original cast would be returning. Scott Eastwood, Levi Meaden, Cailee Spaeny, and Jing Tian have also been announced for the sequel.

    In 2014, Del Toro told Collider the plan for “Pacific Rim 2”:

    “It’s a few years after the first one. It’s not an immediate follow-up. It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after – what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat. It’s quite a jump.”

    “Pacific Rim: Maelstrom” is currently scheduled for release February 23rd, 2018.
