Happy Star Wars Day! May the Fourth be with you… Well, if you’re reading this on May 4, at least. But this is not-so-unexpected day that Lucasfilm and Disney+ chose to launch the new trailer for streaming series ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’.

And this latest look at the show features a brief glimpse of possibly the ‘Star Wars’ franchise’s most iconic character: Darth Vader. Yes, the wheezy breathing Sith Lord is here, even if he doesn’t get to do much yet.

The big question, of course, is exactly how he’s being brought to life – Hayden Christensen is back for the new series, so is that him in the suit? Or can we expect to also see him as Anakin Skywalker somehow? And will James Earl Jones lend his trademark tones for Vader’s voice? Surely that’s a given.

Mostly, though, as the title suggests, this is about Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan. The new series is set roughly 10 years after the tragic events of ‘Revenge of the Sith’. His pupil and friend, Skywalker, has turned fully to the Dark Side and now strides around in his cybernetic black suit. Many of his fellow Jedi have been slaughtered, partly by Anakin, at the behest of Emperor Palpatine.

And Obi-Wan himself is on the run, hiding out on the dusty desert planet, where he’s trying to keep a low profile while occasionally checking in on a young Luke Skywalker (Grant Feely), who, along with the boy’s twin sister Leia, Obi-Wan helped find a home for after their mother’s death.

But the Empire is not just going to let Kenobi or any of his remaining fellow Jedi hide out. The Dark Side power has dispatched a Grand Inquisitor (played by Rupert Friend) to hunt them down. With a knack for being imposing and spinning his red lightsaber, he’s sure to be a big threat.

Yet a more direct challenge comes courtesy of Inquisitor Reva (Moses Ingram) who has her own abilities and is seen confronting Owen Lars (Joel Edgerton) on Tatooine. As the baddies suggest, the Jedi’s greatest weakness is that their kindness leaves a mark on people and places – something the Empire can track. And they’ve no quibbles about killing as many people as they need to find their targets.

In addition to reminding us of all of that, the new trailer also finds Obi-Wan talking to Owen, setting up the less-than-warm relationship between the two men. “Leave us alone,” says Lars, no doubt aware of the threat that associating with the Jedi Master represents. “When the time comes, the boy must be trained,” argues Obi-Wan, referring to Luke. “Like you trained his father?” comes the snarky, world-weary reply. Thankfully, Jar-Jar Binks is nowhere to be seen, unable to exclaim at the saltiness of Owen’s attitude.

Kumail Nanjiani, Sung Kang, Benny Safdie, Maya Erskine, and O’Shea Jackson Jr. are all in the cast, with Joby Harold leading the writing side and ‘Mandalorian’ veteran director Deborah Chow calling the shots.

Originally planned for another big ‘Star Wars’ legacy date – May 25, the day the first movie opened back in 1977 – ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ is now set to launch its first two episodes on May 27th.

When we catch back up with Ewan McGregor’s Jedi master Obo-Wan Kenobi in the new Disney+Star Wars’ series named for him, he’s certainly not in the best place. And we don’t just mean Tatooine.

‘Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi’ is set roughly 10 years after the tragic events of ‘Revenge of the Sith’. His pupil and friend, Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) has turned fully to the Dark Side and now strides around in a cybernetic black suit as Darth Vader. Many of his fellow Jedi have been slaughtered, partly by Anakin, at the behest of Emperor Palpatine.

And Obi-Wan himself is on the run, hiding out on the dusty desert planet, where he’s trying to keep a low-profile (check out the all-but deserted cave dwelling) while occasionally checking in on a young Luke Skywalker, who, along with the boy’s twin sister Leia, Obi-Wan helped find a home for after their mother’s death.

But the Empire is not just going to let Kenobi or any of his remaining fellow Jedi hide out. The Dark Side power has dispatched a Grand Inquisitor (played, we think, though there hasn’t been confirmation, by Rupert Friend) to hunt them down.

The biggest challenge here is telling a story that we all know the end of –Kenobi obviously doesn’t die, since he shows up years later again in ‘Star Wars’ and Luke and Lars obviously both survive to that movie. Yet as we’re told time and time again, it’s all about the journey, and this is an unexplored corner of Kenobi’s life.

Plus, who doesn’t want to see Ewan McGregor back as the Jedi warrior, especially given the chance to play a very different side of him even compared to the long-time desert-dweller of ‘Star Wars’? This is a haunted, troubled Obi-Wan, his pain still fresh and his mood defeated.

It also looks like the show doesn’t just stay on Tatooine (one of the criticisms aimed at most of ‘The Book of Boba Fett’), journeying to some other worlds including the graffiti-riddled neon world of the Hong Kong-alike Daiyu.

Thanks to the use of John Williams’ iconic ‘The Phantom Menace’ score snippet ‘Duel of the Fates’, the new teaser certainly offers enough to have you anticipating the new show. Hello there, indeed.

With ‘The Mandalorian’ veteran Deborah Chow directing and Joby Harold writing the scripts, ‘Obi-Wan’ also features Kumail Nanjiani, Benny Safdie, Simon Kessell, Maya Erskine, O’Shea Jackson Jr., and Indira Varma.

The show will kick off on Disney+ on May 25th, which just so happens to be the 45th anniversary of ‘Star Wars’ own theatrical debut.

  • ‘Den of Thieves’ Sequel to Shoot This Year

Gerard Butler fans, prepare to celebrate. Because the sequel to one of his movies is preparing to shoot this spring.

As announced by Deadline, ‘Den of Thieves 2: Pantera’ is on track to start filming in Serbia and France in the late spring, with writer/director Christian Gudegast back behind the camera.

In case you somehow missed the 2018 action thriller, here are the basics: Buter plays Nick O’Brien, the hard-drinking leader of the Regulators, an elite unit of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Ray Merrimen (‘Orange is the new Black’s Pablo Schreiber), meanwhile is the recently paroled leader of the Outlaws, a gang of ex-military men who use their expertise and tactical skills to evade the law. O’Brien, Merrimen and their crews soon find themselves on a direct collision course as the criminals hatch an elaborate plan for a seemingly impossible heist – the city’s Federal Reserve Bank.

The movie also featured O’Shea Jackson Jr. as Donnie Wilson, the ace driver of the thief team, 50 Cent as Enson Levoux, a former Marine who also aids Merriman, while Meadow Williams played Holly, who is in relationship with Merriman.

On the law enforcement side, we have Maurice Compote as Detective Benny “Borracho” Magalon, Brian Van Holt as Detective Murph Connors and Mo McRae as Detective Gus Henderson, who all work on “Big” Nick’s team.

In a twist in the style of ‘The Usual Suspects’, it’s revealed that Donnie is the actual mastermind behind the heist, and he escapes with the loot to Europe where he’s seen working at a bar while planning his next heist.

‘Pantera’ picks up with Big Nick on the hunt in Europe for Donnie, who is embroiled in the dangerous world of diamond thieves and the infamous Panther mafia as they plot a massive heist of the world’s biggest diamond exchange.

O’Shea Jackson Jr. is officially back on board, as is Williams, while ‘After’s Swen Temmel is among the new faces joining for this one. The sequel’s rights are up for grabs at the European Film Market, and while STX distributed the original in the States, other companies are looking to take on the sequel.

According to Deadline, Gudegast has been doing some deep dive research for the story, spending time with both criminals and the investigators who hunt them down. So, if you ever wondered whether the first film was backed up by knowledge, and wasn’t just your average crime thriller, consider yourself up to date!

Given that Gudegast shepherded the original film through roughly 14 years of development, it must be a relief that the sequel is coming together relatively swiftly – even if the pandemic did cause an extra delay.

Before the sequel arrives, though, Butler has several movies awaiting release, including action thriller ‘The Plane’ and ‘Kandahar’, which finds him working again with ‘Angel Has Fallen’ and ‘Greenland’ director Ric Roman Waugh.

  • Ice Cube, Son O’Shea Jackson Jr. Have ‘No Plans’ for L.A. Riots Movie

STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON VIP Screening With Director/ Producer F. Gary Gray, Producer Ice Cube, Executive Producer Will Packer, And Cast Members
Ice Cube and son O’Shea Jackson Jr

Ice Cube and his son O’Shea Jackson Jr are saying reports they have joined a film based on the L.A. riots are straight outta the rumor mill.

The pair insist that they are not participating in the forthcoming drama “April 29, 1992” after some premature announcements began circulating they had signed on to the project, according to a statement to Deadline.

“Ice Cube and O’Shea Jackson Jr. have no plans to commit to this project at this time. Any speculations or rumors that suggest that they are confirmed are simply untrue,” a rep for the actors says.

Deadline adds that a source revealed to the website that they had been approached months ago, but “talks never progressed as the two sides were far apart on money and script.”

Cube and Jackson collaborated on the hit “Straight Outta Compton,” of which Cube served as producer and Jackson portrayed his father onscreen. In the NWA biopic, the 1992 Los Angeles riots was featured.

On April 29, 1992 a six-day riot began in L.A.’s South Central and spread throughout the metropolitan area, causing more than $1 billion in damage after looting, arson and other civil disturbances. The outrage was sparked by the acquittal of police officers in the brutal beating of Rodney King, which was recorded on videotape and highlighted the racial tension between minority communities and the Los Angeles Police Department.

  • Ice Cube’s Son O’Shea Jackson Jr on Police Brutality

In 1986, Ice Cube and his rap group NWA lyrically exposed the abuse of power by police against black men. Nearly 30 years later, it’s a matter of history repeating.

“The same problems that were happening back then are happening now, there’s just a bigger eye on them,” O’Shea Jackson Jr tells Made in Hollywood. The 23-year-old actor highlights the issue of police violence in urban communities while portraying his father, Ice Cube, in “Straight Outta Compton.”

And with the advent of smartphone cameras and social media, the raw reality is undeniable. In the biopic, which follows Cube, Dr. Dre and the original lineup of the gangster rap group, their way of revealing the brutality of their streets was through their music. For Jackson, it’s a lesson that’s relevant today.

“There’s always people that need to be inspired and people who need to a little more courage and a movie like this is a real life movie,” he says. “It speaks on things that us, as humanity, need to be refreshed on again.”

“Straight Outta Compton” hits theaters Friday. Watch the trailer below.

  • How Ice Cube’s Son Worked the Frown to Play His Dad ‘Straight Outta Compton’

As Ice Cube’s son, O’Shea Jackson Jr already had an advantage in portraying him on screen in “Straight Outta Compton,” a biopic about the rise and fall of the 1980s-90s gangster rap group his father founded, NWA.

Still, the 23-year-old was committed to mastering the actor-rapper’s every nuance.

“I’d go around frowning for no reason,” the budding actor tells the Associated Press of how he prepared for his audition.

No doubt his acting ability and nearly-identical looks that he shares with the “21 Jump Street” star helped him land the part. It probably didn’t hurt that the 46-year-old serves as producer on the drama.

“He just owned it,” Cube shares. “I’m just proud of the production. I have never been this happy for any project that I’ve ever done.”

“Straight Outta Compton” follows the true journey of Cube, Dr. Dre (also the film’s producer), and NWA’s original lineup, as they formed the platinum-selling hip hop group that exposed the gritty horror of their South Central Los Angeles streets. Police brutality, gang violence and the objectification of women were subjects of the music that reflected their life experience.

“Straight Outta Compton” hits theaters Aug. 14. Watch the trailer below.
