Helen Mirren: ‘There Really Should Be an Oscar for Stunt Work’
If they can include two sound categories — Sound Mixing and Sound Editing — surely the Oscars can add one stunt category?
Helen Mirren isn’t the first to bring up the idea, but she’s Dame Helen freakin’ Mirren. Her words carry weight (stylishly, of course).
The 72-year-old actress talked to Total Film (via Female First) about needing her own Oscar before being able to land action movies like “Fast 8.”
“I begged. I put it out there and then I begged. That was one of the wonderful advantages of winning an Oscar. I got to be in action movies! Because they love having Oscar winners in their action movies. They want to bring you down.”
Please. There’s no way to bring down the queen.
Mirren said she loved doing the action sequences, and loved the technology. That’s how she segued into campaigning for stunt Oscars:
“They’re extraordinary, these special effects guys and stunt guys. To watch those craftsmen at work… There really should be an Oscar for stunt work. These guys are incredible and they’re so careful and so professional. And they’re artists. The do amazing things.”
Hear, hear.
As IndieWire noted, “Fast and Furious” stunt coordinator Jack Gill “has unsuccessfully petitioned The Academy to add a category for stunt performers since 1991.” The SAG Awards added stunt ensemble categories for film and TV work, but the Oscars has yet to catch up. In addition to stunts, some have pushed for the Oscars to add a category honoring casting directors.
Then again, do we really want the Oscars ceremony to go even longer than the current four hours?

Timothée Chalamet & Ansel Elgort Had the Cutest High School Reunion at the Oscars
Talk about living in total “Glee”: Timothée Chalamet and Ansel Elgort attended the “Fame” school, New York City’s LaGuardia High School, at the same time.
Both Timmy, 22, and Ansel, 23, were also part of the 2017-2018 awards circuit for their respective films “Call Me By Your Name” and “Baby Driver.”
Timmy got himself an Oscar nomination, while “Baby Driver” picked up three nods for the film.
The high school buddies reunited for a photo during the 2018 Academy Awards:
Armie Hammer, you’re awesome, but you’re 31. You don’t belong in this high school reunion photo.
Check out this photo of Timmy, Ansel, and Will Peltz from back in 2014 at the Toronto International Film Festival:
It’s great to see they still support each other, like in this December 2017 photo after they were both nominated for Golden Globe Awards:
Can you imagine being in the same classes as these two?
During the Golden Globe Awards, MTV News put both actors on the spot to name who was more popular in school. They chose each other, but neither agreed with the reasoning.
“Timothée,” said Ansel, “Timothée was so popular.”
“Ansel had a calendar!” Timothée argued. “Are you kidding me?”
So, who was more popular in high school: @AnselElgort or @RealChalamet? pic.twitter.com/0m6taUR792
— MTV (@MTV) January 9, 2018
Ansel replied to the calendar argument:Hold up! I did not make the calendar myself! The calendar and shoot was organized by student council! To raise money! I’d pay ???? to see a Timmy calendar tho ????
— Ansel Elgort (@AnselElgort) January 9, 2018
Still, Timmy argued that Ansel is the one who got the good roles in school:
“I auditioned for Guys and Dolls, Hairspray — he was the lead! I didn’t get into them. That’s why all those rap videos are online. I was doing the talent show instead of the musicals.”
Now, now. You’re both very pretty and popular. But Timmy may have to take the title at this point for inspiring “Call Me By Your Name” screenwriter James Ivory to wear a shirt with his face on it to the Academy Awards. That’s next level.

Taraji P. Henson Was Actually Supporting, Not Shading, Ryan Seacrest at Oscars
Actress Taraji P. Henson said fans “misconstrued” her comments on the Oscars 2018 red carpet. She wasn’t shading E!’s Ryan Seacrest, she was “absolutely” supporting him.Henson clarified the situation with People. The confusion started on Oscars Sunday when it seemed like many stars might pass up interviews with Seacrest due to the sexual harassment complaints against him by his former personal stylist.
Henson talked to Seacrest on the red carpet, but said this during her interview:
“The universe has a way of taking care of good people. [She touched him on the chin.] “You know what I mean?”
Many fans interpreted that as a shot at Seacrest, especially when her next interview was with Wendi McLendon-Covey on ABC, and she said, “I’m great now that I’m in *your* company.”
Taraji came for Ryan Seacrest’s NECK because of the sexual assault allegations against him. I love this woman so much. pic.twitter.com/pfKwLRIPQc

Did…Taraji just shade Ryan, live on air?
Did anyone else catch it? ????????
— Stephanie Yeboah (@NerdAboutTown) March 5, 2018
But Henson told People she wasn’t dragging Seacrest, she was trying to have his back:
“I did it to keep his chin up. It’s an awkward position to be in. He’s been cleared but anyone can say anything.”
(There’s disagreement about the clearing. E! commissioned the investigation against their own star, using outside counsel, and that investigation found insufficient evidence to support the claims of stylist Suzie Hardy. But Hardy told Variety the investigator never contacted four witnesses she had referred him to corroborate her story.)
People asked Henson directly if she was supporting Seacrest, and she replied “absolutely.” It should’ve been clear that she was on his side by the end of her red carpet interview, when she hugged him:

Frances McDormand’s Oscar 2018 Statue Was Stolen; Police Arrest Suspect
Come on, now. If there’s anyone you don’t want to tick off, it’s Frances McDormand. She’d probably do more than put up billboards to shame you. That should be obvious by now.
The 2018 Oscars aired last night, with McDormand picking up her second Academy Award as Best Actress. The “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” star then went to the Governors Ball after the show. That’s when her statue was briefly stolen.

The “Three Billboards” trophy was later recovered, so her “Fargo” Oscar will get to meet its new sibling.
Deadline said police arrested Terry Bryant, 47, for the crime. He had a ticket to the event, police said, but he didn’t have authority to be the new Best Actress winner. He was arrested at 11:50 PT, and he’s facing a charge of felony grand theft. His bail is set at $20,000.
Frances McDormand had an impressive, and interactive, Oscars speech, asking the female nominees in all categories to stand up during the speech. She issued a call to action for inclusion riders, asking actors to include stipulations in their contracts to ensure more diversity.

Emma Watson Shows Off New Time’s Up Tattoo (Which Is Misspelled)
But it’s only temporary anyway. And she still got the message across.
After the 2018 Oscars, “Beauty and the Beast” belle Emma Watson showed off her new tattoo at the Vanity Fair after-party. The black cursive tat isn’t permanent, but it reads “Times Up.”
If she had done the hashtag
#TimesUp or something, fans wouldn’t comment. But since it’s “Times Up” without the apostrophe to make it Time IS Up, social media started giving her crap.Critics mentioned that she studied at Brown University, an Ivy League school, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English literature. And yet…
Emma Watson’s “Time’s Up” tattoo missing the apostrophe pic.twitter.com/0PtHabqyDI
— Kayleigh Leadbetter (@kayleigh_uk) March 5, 2018
We’re all human. We’ve all made spelling errors — sometimes many. Typos need love, too. We don’t all broadcast those errors on the red carpet, but give Hermione a break. She’s trying to do a good thing here.
UPDATE: Emma had a sense of humor about the whole thing, tweeting this reaction:
Fake tattoo proofreading position available. Experience with apostrophes a must.
— Emma Watson (@EmmaWatson) March 5, 2018
The big picture takeaway is that Emma Watson is a very public supporter of the Time’s Up movement. She regularly backs that up with action — donating about $1.4 million to a U.K.-based fund to fight sexual harassment, assault, and discrimination. She’s a UN Women Goodwill ambassador. And she attended the 2018 Golden Globes with Marai Larasi, who heads Imkaan, which fights violence against minority women.
She’s a good egg.

Oscars 2018: 11 Best (and Worst) Moments From the 90th Academy Awards
The Academy Awards are always among the most memorable Hollywood evenings of the year, and 2018 was no exception. We saw some very deserving movies go home with trophies, chuckle at host Jimmy Kimmel‘s antics, and even shed a tear or two when the “In Memoriam” segment started.
While no one opened the wrong envelope this time, this year’s show had plenty of high and low moments. These are the ones that stood out, for better or worse, at this year’s Oscars.
Best Acceptance Speech
Despite Kimmel encouraging winners to open their hearts and speak about whatever causes were important to them, most winners played it pretty safe. Not Frances McDormand.
The Best Actress winner used her moment in the spotlight to call attention to her fellow female nominees and to remind studios that plenty of women are still struggling to get the opportunities and financing they deserve.
In one of the more inspiring moments of the show, McDormand called on her fellow women to stand up and be noticed. Naturally, Meryl Streep was only too happy to lead the charge.Worst “In Memoriam” Omissions
The “In Memoriam” video montage is always one of the more memorable moments of any Oscar ceremony. It’s certainly the most tear-jerking. But even as the Academy paid tribute to those we lost over the past 12 months, it was hard to ignore the fact that there were a few conspicuously absent names. The absence of Batman himself, Adam West, understandably drew the most outrage online. But the “In Memoriam” segment was missing several deserving names, including singer (and recent Oscar Nominee) Glen Campbell, Oscar-winning actress Dorothy Malone, singer Della Reese, and actors Powers Boothe and Robert Guillaume. What gives?
Best Topical Opening Speech
It’s been a rough few months for Hollywood, with the industry forced to confront its pervasive sexual harassment problem and the need to encourage greater diversity both behind and in front of the camera. It would have been impossible for Kimmel not to acknowledge these topics during his opening speech.Thankfully, he started things off strong with a monologue that was both funny and very mindful of the changes sweeping Hollywood. As he said, “If we can work together to stop sexual harassment in the workplace, women will only have to deal with harassment all the time in every other place they go.”
Worst Viral Stunt
For the most part, Kimmel proves himself to be a very capable host. That said, we’re not keen on the recent trend of hosts bringing the show to a halt in order to perform some sort of pointless viral stunt. This year’s show attempted to replicate last year’s “Gary from Chicago” bit as Kimmel and a random gaggle of nominees crossed the street to hand out food to moviegoers at a nearby screening. The Oscars ceremony is long enough as it is without these pointless tangents.
Best Jimmy Kimmel Banter
Some of this year’s funniest moments came as Kimmel poked fun at famous thespians in the audience. As usual, Meryl Streep was full of good-natured humor and grace as she routinely served as the butt of jokes. But our favorite moments involved actors Timothée Chalamet and Christopher Plummer, among the youngest and oldest actors in attendance, respectively. Kimmel informed the audience that Chalamet was missing “Paw Patrol” to be in attendance, while also quizzing Plummer on how well Lin-Manuel Miranda compares to the actual Alexander Hamilton.
Worst Snubs
It wouldn’t be an Oscars ceremony without at least a couple deserving films being snubbed by Academy voters. This year was no exception. Despite being among the most critically acclaimed films of 2017 and earning several nominations, “Lady Bird” was completely shut out. We’re also disappointed that “War for the Planet of the Apes” didn’t win the Best Visual Effects award. The Academy has never shown much appreciation for the art of motion capture, but we were hoping the final entry in this series would get recognized for its amazing technical accomplishments.
Best Giveaway
One of the more entertaining recurring gags of the evening involved Kimmel offering a jet ski as prize to whichever winner delivered the shortest acceptance speech. The fact that The Price Is Right”-style presenter only made the joke more memorable. We don’t get the impression the jet ski giveaway actually helped much in terms of making winners shorten their speeches. But the gag did have great payoff when Best Costume Design winner Mark Bridges was rolled back on stage at the end atop his shiny new jet ski.
Worst Musical Performance
We doubt many will argue that “Remember Me” didn’t deserve to win Best Original Song. But if the judges were going solely by the quality of the live performances at the Oscars, maybe it would have been a different story. The performance started off on a weak note, thanks to Gael García Bernal‘s questionable vocal delivery. Things didn’t improve much when Miguel and Natalia Lafourcade took the stage, with their awkward choreography frequently clashing with the collage of light and color all around them.
“Remember Me” couldn’t hold up to far more mesmerizing performances like “Mighty River” and “This Is Me” or elegant, stripped-down performances like “Mystery of Love” or Eddie Vedder‘s rendition of Tom Petty’s “Room at the Top.”
Best Presenter Duo
You never know quite what you’re going to get with Oscar presenters. For every lively, hilarious performance, there’s at least one more awkward, poorly rehearsed moment of banter.
By far the most memorable presenters of the evening were Tiffany Haddish and Maya Rudolph, who showed off their hilarious chemistry and continued the show’s trend of blending laughs with a topical awareness. If the two were auditioning to become the new Oscar co-hosts in 2019, then we’re all for it.Worst Video Montage
Oscar video montages can be tricky, as there’s often a fine line between paying loving tribute to Hollywood’s long history and becoming insufferable and self-congratulatory.That problem cropped up with the inexplicable inclusion of a war movie montage. While we appreciate that the Academy is trying to pay its respects to the men and women serving in the armed forces, this montage felt out of place — at best — and tone deaf at worst.
Best “It’s About Time” Awards
There are only so many Oscars to go around in any given year, and that means that some highly deserving actors, writers and filmmakers fail to get the recognition they deserve. As much as we were sad to see women like Greta Gerwig and Agnès Varda go home empty-handed, this year’s ceremony did right at least two very glaring wrongs.
We were thrilled to see Roger Deakins finally go home with a Best Cinematography award for “Blade Runner 2049.” Deakins is widely regarded as one of the finest ever to work in his field, and the fact that it took the Academy this long (14 nominations) to recognize him is a crying shame.
The same goes for “Call Me By Your Name” writer James Ivory, who is now the oldest Oscar winner ever after taking home the award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Margot Robbie Had a Wardrobe Malfunction During the 2018 Oscars
Margot Robbie is a woman of many talents, including some very quick sewing during the 2018 Oscars.
There’s a lot that happens away from the camera’s eye — behind-the-scenes or during commercial breaks. During one of the first commercial breaks, People reported, “I, Tonya” nominee Margot Robbie struggled with a wardrobe malfunction.
Robbie told her soon-to-be-Oscar-winning costar Allison Janney that one of her Chanel dress straps had snapped off and was swinging around loose.
Robbie’s rep rushed over to the rescue with a mini sewing kit, and Robbie threaded the needle herself. “Oh, ain’t got time for that!” she joked to People.
(Side note: Recently, Robbie told Graham Norton there’s a special term Australians use when they just want to get on with something: “We’re not here to f*ck spiders.” Seriously. It’s around the 4-minute mark of this Lara Croft video.)
Before that moment, on the Oscars red carpet, People said Margot Robbie and Jennifer Garner met up to shower each other in compliments and joke about their underwear/undergarments strategy.
And apparently “The Shape of Water” nominee Sally Hawkins (who is DUE an Oscar) ran into Robbie while she was sewing, and said she was dealing with her own wardrobe issue: She was losing shells off her dress.
Stars! They’re just like us — and their clothes don’t always cooperate either.
But really, “Project Runway” should make Margot Robbie a guest judge ASAP. She always looks stunning, and knows how to calmly solve a fashion emergency in seconds.

Fans Want Tiffany Haddish & Maya Rudolph to Host Oscars 2019
The 2018 Oscars gave fans a Tiffany & Maya 2019 test run — and they loved it.
Jimmy Kimmel was a great Oscars host for the past two years, but viewers are already looking ahead to next year.
While Jimmy was treating moviegoers in the theater next door, Tiffany Haddish and Maya Rudolph took to the stage as presenters — and presented the audience with some hilarious banter. They made it look easy (while so many others still make it look awkward).
Could the Oscars be looking at its own Tina and Amy?
Twitter immediately seized on the idea of locking down the duo for a 2019 run:
Me to Tiffany Hadish at the Gov Ball: “People on Twitter are saying you and Maya should host next year.”
Tiffany to me: “Well I agree with those people!” #Oscars— Matthew Belloni (@THRMattBelloni) March 5, 2018

Next time, Tiffany and Maya should host the #Oscars. Or at least give them the #GoldenGlobes
— Karen Tongson (@inlandemperor) March 5, 2018
The Golden Globes is Oscars’ boozy cousin. Usually that’s a more fun show, but the Oscars can be lighthearted and fun, too. And considering the show lasts about four hours, it really should be as fun as possible. What do you think: Tiffany and Maya as the new Oscars dream team? Tiffany is already hosting the 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards in June, so maybe we can consider that her Oscars test run.

Oscars 2018: Jennifer Garner’s Clapping Reaction Shot Goes Viral
Did Jennifer Garner have some kind of mid-clap epiphany during the 2018 Oscars? Until she explains, fans shared their own theories.
The 90th Academy Awards gave us at least two new GIFs to play with — Jennifer Lawrence laughing at Emma Stone, and now Jennifer Garner stopping her own applause to suddenly look bewildered. Shocked, maybe. Confused.
What was she looking at that suddenly stopped her?
Jen Garner isn’t that secretive, so once she realizes she is now a meme, she’ll probably address what prompted this expression. In the meantime, fans filled in the blanks themselves:
