Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about your first reaction to the screenplay and did the tone and style of the movie read on the page?

Josh Hartnett: We worked a lot on the tone and the style after I read it. It was amazing. I thought the conceit of it was fantastic. The production company that sent it to me wanted me to do all my own stunts. I thought that would be an amazing challenge and opportunity at the age of 45, because you don’t get that. People don’t ask you to do your own stunts at 45 very often. Then finding the right tone was a lot of work for Jim and I. We knew what our references were going to be, what films we really liked and wanted to emulate, but also what films we didn’t want to emulate. We knew that we wanted this to be unique within the marketplace. So, the comedy had to be front-and-center and the action sequences had to be on point and it needed to all blend together in a seamless way and not feel canned. So, we knew that we had to shoot long sequences. We had to see that I was doing it all and it had to be at the same time funny and surprising. So, we added the drug stuff and a lot of the injuries because Jim really wanted to feel my character getting injured repeatedly so that you had this sense of jeopardy with the character the whole time. You didn’t feel like there was an inevitable win at the end of this. Ultimately, he needs other people to help him to win the day. So, it’s just a pure fun piece, but it also is, I think unique. I think audiences hopefully will respond to it.

MF: Finally, what was it like shooting the film’s intense action sequences with director James Madigan?

JH: I mean, we had an amazing stunt team, and I had a great stunt double who helped work out all the scenes while I was off shooting other scenes. So, we basically had time at the beginning, a couple of weeks to rehearse all the sequences, but they weren’t all finished by the time we got to filming. We only had five weeks to shoot it. So, I had to go and shoot, and my stunt guy would work out the scenes with the with stunt choreographers. Then I would come after work and insert myself into it and try to learn them as we had no extra time. There was no room for error, and we got incredibly lucky. We had such amazing people working on it. Jim was able to get everything he needed to put it together like this and I think we achieved a unique tone. I don’t know if we could have done it any other way. If we’d had more time, we might have ruined it. You know what I mean? It was something that came together because necessity is the mother of invention. We had to do a lot of stuff that was very handheld and very old school. Like when the body is ripped up with the chainsaw, that was just a dummy from an old costume factory or something that they pulled apart physically as I was sawing through it and it’s just shooting it at the right angle. We had a great DP. So, it just required an incredible amount of ingenuity. I’m very proud the whole team that put this together. I was very lucky.

  • ‘Barbie’ Becoming WB’s Biggest Hit

Barbie’ might have been knocked down to second place again at the domestic box office this weekend by ‘Gran Turismo’, which managed to take the top spot (yet only for the three-day weekend and only by $200,000, with final figures possibly changing that), but Greta Gerwig’s movie is now on track to surpass yet another record.

As of Monday, the movie had made $1.34 billion, which means it is $1 million from overtaking ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2’, the previous global champ. Of course, all of this has to be qualified with the usual “adjusted for inflation” argument, since ‘Deathly Hallows’ came out in 2011, when tickets prices were cheaper.

    Barbie: the story so far

Directed by Gerwig, the film –– for anyone who has yet to see it –– brings the world of the iconic toy to life as Margot Robbie plays a Barbie living in “Barbie Land”, a place where variants of the character live happily: until she starts to realize she’s just not feeling the same way. Cue a trip to the real world…

‘Barbie’s success is all the more impressive because it has clearly connected beyond the initial rush of memes and jokes around the first couple of trailers. The movie has captured the public imagination, and alongside Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’, has become one of the movie events of the year.

It just keeps on breaking records, including non-holiday weekend earnings and low drops in subsequent weeks.

The film, which also stars Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Ariana Greenblatt, Simu Liu and Will Ferrell, had a budget of roughly $100 million, and while it had an extensive promotional campaign, word of mouth and a clutch of positive reviews have carried it to big money.

Could it hit $2 billion? Anything is possible at this point, though with the state of the theatrical business post-Covid, it’s more unlikely than before the pandemic. Still, it continues to bring in audiences.

Will there be a ‘Barbie’ sequel?

While backers/rights holders Mattel have naturally hinted at a whole world of follow-ups and spin-offs, there are no current and official announced plans.

Still Greta Gerwig, despite saying she had no ideas for a sequel, did say this to ‘People’ before the movie hit the billion mark:

“There’s a tone and a humor and a joy, and obviously the world is so beautiful. I want to go back to Barbie Land.”

The other buzzy film of the summer, Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’, is barreling towards the $800 million mark at the worldwide box office after earning $29.1 million from 7,555 screens in 82 territories. Nolan’s film, a biopic of J. Robert Oppenheimer and the creation of the atomic bomb has enjoyed a massive $777 million worldwide gross — an astonishing figure for a somber, R-rated drama. And the money may well keep rolling, in since its debut in China is coming soon.

‘Gran Turismo’ added $11 million to bring its global haul to just over $53 million. The racing film will still need to put the pedal to the metal if it hopes to turn a profit.

Elsewhere in Warner Bros. stable, ‘Meg 2: The Trench’ added $15.2 million from 16,224 screens in 77 offshore markets. That brings its global gross to $352.5 million.

And unlike other Hollywood releases, which have struggled in China lately, the giant shark movie has gotten a big boost from that market, earning $112.9 million

Then there is ‘Blue Beetle.’ The superhero origin story earned an estimated $10 million for the weekend in 71 international markets and on 10,421 screens. Globally, the picture has earned $81.8 million, a disappointing result for a movie that cost more than $100 million to produce.

  • Robert Downey Jr. Eyes ‘Vertigo’ Remake

We have clearly reached an age where no film, no matter its classic status, is safe from a studio deciding to dip into its back catalogue and decide that a new version could work.

The latest title in those particular crosshairs, according to Deadline, is Alfred Hitchcock’s 1958 thriller ‘Vertigo’, which starred James Stewart and Kim Novak.

With the studio –– like several others –– raiding its existing title list for new content, the plan is to have ‘Peaky Blinders’ and ‘See’s Steven Knight (who also just jumped into the ‘Star Wars’ galaxy) write a fresh take on the original story.

What was the original ‘Vertigo’ about?

Directed and produced by Hitchcock, ‘Vertigo’ was based on the 1954 novel ‘D’entre les morts’ (‘From Among the Dead’) by Boileau-Narcejac and adapted by screenwriters Alec Coppel and Samuel A. Taylor.

The film stars Stewart as former police detective John “Scottie” Ferguson, who has retired after an incident in the line of duty caused him to develop acrophobia (an extreme fear of heights) and vertigo, a false sense of rotational movement.

Scottie is hired by an acquaintance, Gavin Elster (Tom Helmore), as a private investigator to follow Gavin’s wife Madeleine (Kim Novak), who is behaving strangely.

Of course, as Scottie digs into the case, he comes to learn there is far more to it than that, and his life could be at risk…

What’s going on with the new version?

It’s still early days, but Robert Downey Jr. has expressed an interested in starring, taking on the Stewart role. He’s also aboard to produce via his Team Downey company, alongside Davis Entertainment’s John Davis and John Fox.

The Hitchcock estate controls the rights to the movie and has granted Paramount the go-ahead to make this new version, but the bigger question might be how it’ll work in the shadow of the original.

Other Hitchcock movies have been remade with varying levels of success, but few if any are regarded as highly as the originals.

And let’s not forget, the last time Robert Downey Jr. starred in and produced a remake, we got ‘Dolittle’. We’re naturally hoping for better things this time around –– assuming the new film goes ahead.

Downey Jr. has taken his foot off the gas on the acting front somewhat since finishing up his tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Besides ‘Dolittle’, he’s only appeared in ‘Sr’, the documentary about his father, Robert Downey Sr. Yet he will be back on our screens this year in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’, due in theaters on July 21st.

Behind the scenes, he’s been much more active, producing all manner of TV shows in particular, including HBO’s ‘Perry Mason’ and ‘Sweet Tooth’ on Netflix.
